The Prez Sez
Pres sez......
I'd like to say, thank you for electing me to serve as your president. I know the other elected officers
and directors are as excited about getting some business done as I am. I'm
really glad that Cheryl Hippe came out of retirement to help the club. Thanks!
We have some great programs going on right now. Kids Day (thank you Karen
Rogers) has become a huge success, field trips have been fun (thanks Eric
Lindquist) so plan on joining one of these activities. And to expand on educational
opportunities for the members and public ideas for a “Earth Night” lecture
series (thank you Tricia Caulkins); plans for a rock storage/outdoor class
room (thank you Bunny Riley & Jack Morrato) out in the back yard are just the
beginning. A landscape rock sale is in the works. Ideas are just the beginning.
The energy and commitment of these members and others on these projects and
activities, their dedication to the club is contagious. I hope all our members
catch their passion and help with a project we are doing or have an idea you are
passionate about that fits into our mission statement. I can't express the need for
you, our members and your help to make all this possible. It takes the membership
to build a club, it takes the club to build a museum. I must give a big
THANK YOU to Lynnea, Bunny, DeEtte, the Land family, Laura, Bill and
Cheryl for helping me at the Battle of the Bones this weekend. I could not have
done it without all your help. No Friday meeting in July, we have our annual in
picnic on July see detail on page 3.
Board Meeting Minutes June 6, 2012
Abbreviated minutes. For full transcript visit
www.craterrock.com or come into the museum
during normal business hours.
June 2012 Board meeting
Minutes from the May 30 th work session
were read and accepted.
Pam indicated that the minutes from
last month’s board minutes had Pam
helping Jami on a project but that was
not the case. The minutes were then
accepted with correction.
Next board meeting is July 11 th , 2012
at 7p.
There had been several questions
about the by-laws at the general meeting
in May. The by-laws were checked
to make sure that all of the changes had
been made. There was a question still
about ‘responsible for recommending
all major financial decisions” and what
‘major’ would be. Should it be a percentage
or an amount? Felt that anything
over around $200 would be acceptable.
If approval is needed for
smaller amounts then it could delay
financial decisions until the next general
meeting.
The Rock Chipper
Page 2
Sandy Biggs said that she will take over
as gift shop manager. She will start July
1 st and work 25 hours a week. We would
love to be able to keep Steve but at this
time it isn’t feasible.
Ed Parker wants a business plan and a
financial plan sent to him. The information
that we have will be gathered up and
sent. No one is sure what goes into a business
plan and we will get in touch with
outside help to find out. Maybe Rogue
Federal has someone who could help or the
Small Business Admin. In August we will
get together to find out what we have and
what we need.
The treasurer’s report was next. We
made a profit at the show of $5854. A
budget has been written up and a MOTION
was made to accept the budget. It passed.
The museum cases are getting a reorganization
and a clean-up.
Some of the committee chairs, the gift
shop manager and the work shop manager
need to start giving reports. They will be
told.
The new business dealt with the back
yard design. Money is needed for some
building items, such as rebar, and a lot of
June, 2012 general meeting
Minutes from the Chipper were accepted.
We had 4 new members present. A big
welcome to you all.
The 50/50 drawing was $25. There were
lots of goodies to give out for the door
prize. Thanks to Ken, Harold and Jason
for supplying the items. The membership
drawing had no winner so next time it will
be $20.
The treasurer’s report was next. The
total for the show was $14,524, expenses
were $8670 which left $5854 for a profit.
A big thank-you went out to Tricia as the
show chair and to Jason as the co-chair.
This year was especially trying since the
show had to be held in a brand new loca-
tion. They did a wonderful job. A plaque
was given out to Tricia and a gift certificate
was given to both in appreciation for
their hard work.
The board has hired Sandy Biggs as gift
shop manager. She introduced herself to
those who haven’t been in the gift shop to
see her working.
Bunny Riley and Jack Moratto have been
working on the back yard project. They
need lots of physical help in clearing it
out. They had brought the plan design of
what they would like to see happen back
there.
The sunshine report was next. Shirley
Oswald and Connie Silver both had surgery
and were doing well. Our hope is for
a very speedy recovery.
June 30 th is a field trip to hunt for agates.
Eric Lindquist will lead the group. Meet
at the museum at 9am. You will be traveling
down to the Iron Gate area of Cali-
cleanup is required. The design will be
brought to the general meeting.
Charles Lane and Charles Rogers are
leading a group of volunteer students to do
work at the museum.
There was a suggestion of murals for
some of the walls. If we could get someone
to volunteer to do it then it would be
an option, otherwise no money will go into
it now.
LED lights are to be installed in the cases
but sizes are needed before they can be
purchased.
The funding for the ultraviolet rock and
mineral lab is still in the process. Charles
Rogers hasn’t been able to get into the
website to check it out so he will probably
make a trip to see them.
It would be nice if we could start geology
lectures at the museum that are separate
from the talks and presentations that we
have at the meetings. We could charge a
small fee and maybe make some money.
There were a couple of individuals who
might be willing to come out and talk.
The next Kids day will be for Father’s
Day and they will be working with
shark’s teeth. Kids Day has been a very
popular event. Thank you, Karen.
The changes in the bylaws that were
discussed at the last general meeting had
been made. The new bylaws were presented
to the membership present at the
general meeting. A MOTION was made
to approve the bylaws and 2 nd . It passed.
The back yard project needs to be approved
since the membership now has to
approve any larger expenditures, via the
bylaws. So comments and suggestions
are needed. There is a church group who
would like to do a community project and
will do some of the cleanup. The wood
that is in the back can go to biomass and
Ray Hines will take it. The new backyard
proposal shows an outdoor classroom,
benches, shady areas, storage bins, etc.
Membership Meeting Minutes (cont.)
The first phase of the back would cost $468 for gravel and forms.
A MOTION was made to accept this amount and it passed.
The elections were held. The President is Jami Walkins, VP is
Wade Becker, treasurer is Tricia Caulkins, Secretary is Cheryl
Hippe and Charles Rogers and Ray Hines are board directors.
The July picnic is July 15th. There will be no general meeting. A
-L bring dessert and M-Z bring side dishes. Remember to bring
items to auction off also.
Someone mentioned that we should have logos made to put on our
car. It would be good advertising.
The show table was next with its usual awesome displays.
Central Point has a July 4 th celebration that goes from 1-4p. We
will have a booth but don’t know if we will be in the parade. We
will be attending the Battle of the Bones on June 22 nd thru 24 th .
Chuck Riley gave an excellent presentation on the geological history
of our valley.
A LITTLE STORY
Respectfully submitted,
Cheryl Hippe, Secretary
This is a story about four people, named Someody,
Anybody, Everybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done, and Everybody
was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could
have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s
job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but
Nobody realized that Somebody wouldn’t do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody, when
Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
RAFFLE
We are holding a raffle to make the money to do the back rock
yard. There has been a plan passed, (which is in the museum
office for those interested in seeing it), that will have rock sorting
tables, an outside classroom, organization of the rock pile,
picnic tables and chairs, and a geology, archeology, and paleontology
excavating tables for education.
The Sharps have donated a beautiful azurite druzy necklace to
be raffled off with the drawing to be held at the Picnic, July
15th. Come into the Gift Shop to see the necklace.
Labor Day week-end (Aug. 31 thru Sept 3)
Davis Creek for Obsidian. We plan a Hobo stew
night, potluck night and trip to the Davis Creek
now commercial, we hope we can find a
spot. Also, there is gold sheen, pink and a couple
other spots to explore. Put these dates on
your calendar and hope to see everyone there.
Harold and I will be going early and will try and
hold as any spots as needed in the campground.
September 15 th will be our annual Fun Day at
the museum parking lot. We will do tailgate
sales, rock give away, potluck lunch (Harold & I
will furnish the sandwich fixings) and have a
great time trading and selling to each
other. We will be advertising this as a parking
lot sale, so if you have things other than lapi-
RAGMS Rock Star
Volunteer Spotlight
Jason Bazen
In the Crater Rock Museum and the RAGMS lots of work goes
on behind the scenes. We know it gets done, we just don’t
know who does it. Jason Bazen is one of those unsung, unknown
volunteers who does what needs to get done no matter
what it is or how long it takes. So Jason, YOU are this
month’s Rock Star.
Jason stepped up this year when a Rock Show co-chair was
needed. He made sure that the new venue was ready for
the show and did a thousand other little things to ensure the
show was a success
It seems that he is the go-to guy whenever a door prize is
needed for a meeting and always working the camera to
make sure that the show-and-tell items are seen clearly by
all. He manages the Facebook page on the internet and is
the club picture-taker so we can all reminisce what a great
time we had at club events.
Jason helps Wendy in the workshop keeping the saws up and
running. Many times the task is overwhelming and it’s hard to
keep up. But Jason gives up his Saturdays to make sure everyone
else has a good experience in the workshop.
Let’s not forget Julie, Jason’s wife, either. She has made over
20,000 grab bag bags (5,000 just this year!). And Jason is
there to help Julie with this task, too.
It’s the little things that Jason does that makes the difference
in the club and the museum about which he would never boast
or look for recognition. So Jason, we all thank you for what
you do for the club and the museum. You really ROCK!
Kids Day Events
Crater Rock Museum’s monthly educational series
for children continues to draw plenty of children
and their parents each month, on the second Saturday.
Classes are geared towards elementary school
age children, but all ages are welcome. The classes
are free for children, and parents pay $4.00, for museum
admission.
Classes repeat every hour on the hour, with the last
class starting at 3:00pm. We cover a different topic
each month. Charles Rogers presents a Power
Point presentation about the subject, and Bob and
Barbara Jacobsen set up a display table. Karen
Rogers provides a craft project pertaining to the
month’s topic for the children to take home.
The gift shop can get pretty hectic on Kids Day’s as
we have adults and children swarming around the
books, rocks, which includes breakable items, so
we need extra volunteer help!
Saturday, July 14th from 10am-3pm, is the next
kids day. Learn about Paleontology in our Fossil
Discovery Room. There will be a “Rocks and Minerals”
Scavenger Hunt, with prizes, and the Wheel
of Fortune, with the 1st spin free. And, you never
know if/when Rocky the Rockhound will show up!
Please contact Karen Rogers at
krogers1952@gmail.com, or 541-218-2267 to let her
know you will be willing to help. Even half a day
will help immeasurably.
July Birthstone
Like a perfect red rose, the Ruby's rich color
speaks of love and passion. Called the
"Rajnapura" or King of Gems by ancient Hindus,
July's birthstone is among the most highly prized
of gems throughout history. The Ruby was considered
to have magical powers, and was worn
by royalty as a talisman against evil. It was
thought to grow darker when peril was imminent,
and to return to its original color once danger
was past—provided it was in the hands of its
rightful owner!
Rubies were thought to represent heat and
power. Ancient tribes used the gem as bullets for
blowguns, and it was said that a pot of water
would boil instantly if a Ruby was tossed into it.
Ground to powder and placed on the tongue, this
crystal was used as a cure for indigestion.
The word Ruby comes from the Latin "ruber,"
meaning red. It is a variety of the mineral Corundum,
and is found as crystals within metamorphic
rock. Corundum is the second hardest mineral,
after Diamond. It comes in a variety of colors,
and is considered a Sapphire in any color except
red, which is designated as a Ruby. Rubies range
in hue from an orangey red to a purplish red, but
the tailings is $20. To dig in the pit is $210. To dig in the
the most prized gems are a true red in color. Large
sized Rubies are very rare and valuable.
The history of Ruby mining dates back more than
2,500 years ago. The most beautiful crystals are
thought to be from Burma, but quality Rubies are
also found in India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Kenya,
Tanzania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the United
States.
It has been said that the Ruby's red glow comes
from an internal flame that cannot be extinguished,
making a gift of this stone symbolic of everlasting
love. With its hardness and durability, it is a perfect
engagement gem. And if worn on the left hand, ancient
lore has it that the Ruby will bring good fortune
to its wearer, too!
