established. the director proposed lhat ell ry effort be made to<br />
support community projeCTS and fhat the legislatlJr re-or anize<br />
the MARBe intO an independenr agenc)' \\Iich five members from<br />
each of The staTe S eig}ll cOJ1O"ressional districts. Boch proposals<br />
were adopted by the legislature OI1.L. j 975. Chapter 411 J.<br />
The new Commi ion organized iTself inlO four committees:<br />
Executive, Project Review, Finance and Special £l,t?nrs. The<br />
Project Review Committee was composed of one member from<br />
each conuressional districI and reviewed community initiated<br />
projects for fundil/g. The Finance Corn mittee, also composed of<br />
one member from each of the eight congressiollal districts. was<br />
charged to develop fund raising plan. The Sp cial EvenTS Committee,<br />
" hich was composed ofthe remaining Commission members,<br />
initiated tate\1lide projects. Lieutenant Governor Rudy<br />
Perpich was a ked to serve as the Honorary Chairman to prOVide<br />
visibility and recognition for bice11lennial activities. (See Attachmene<br />
C)<br />
From its first momMy meetillg. it was clear til e the reorganized<br />
MARBC was mainly interested in facilitating communily-initiaeed<br />
projects. Slalewide projects for Commission<br />
sponsorship were proposed by staff. even low-cost scatewide<br />
projeces. and the new Commission for rhe most part turned<br />
thumbs down. The Commission deliberately played a low profile<br />
and served as messengers to their communiries. They spene hours<br />
ill meetin sand QfTended numerous local bicentennial events.<br />
The statewide projects proposed included:<br />
• Milepost Project - The marking (with signs bearing the<br />
Bicentennial logo) of natural. geological. historical, agriculTural.<br />
structural and industrial features along one of<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> s main highways; and the development of a log<br />
thal would identify and offer a world ofexplanation about<br />
the mileposts.<br />
