Communication Center The Communications Section is under the direction of the Support Services Bureau Commander. The dispatch center serves as the focal point for information coordination between various operational units of police department and citizens. One supervisor and nine communications officers provide 24-hour dispatch coverage for the City of Vero Beach. Dispatchers are responsible for answering incoming telephone calls, dispatching police units where needed, receiving, relaying, and recording information to and from field units and contacting other resources which may be needed to provide service. Vero Beach operates one of two enhanced 9-1-1 communications facilities within Indian River County. In 2011, the center received 40,899 calls for service complaints. Volunteer Program Records Management The Records Management section consists of three clerks who annually process thousands of documents. Traffic citations, crime reports, and crash investigations are among the many items archived by the records section personnel. These documents are correlated and disseminated to various agencies and divisions throughout the department, county, state, and country. Also in 2011 the incorporation of two very important web based services, DOC view and Crimereports.com was started. DOC view enables the police department to make crash reports available online to the public, insurance companies, attorneys and other interested parties as Florida statute allows and expedites the manner in which information is made available. Crimereports.com allows the police department to share crime information with the public through a unique web based mapping system. Any citizen who has an interest in knowing where, when, and what type of crimes are occurring in the City of Vero Beach can log on to Crimereports.com at no cost and see information for themselves. Citizens can also provide tips, view the identity and location of sex offenders, and even form neighborhood groups to connect with each other on crime related matters. The generous contribution of volunteer services plays an important role in the overall operation of the Vero Beach Police Department. The volunteer program, established in 1997, relieves the officers of the time intensive responsibilities that they would normally have to perform. In the year 2011, the Community Service Volunteer Program provided over 699 hours of service.
