Tallinn, Estonia
Based on an exceptional site in the
historic city of Tallinn, this concept
masterplan has been defined by creating
a balance between the urban design and
commercial objectives. Combining urban
vitality, waterfront relaxation and private
residential communities, in a careful
balance of public and private spaces, the
aim is to produce a place which is highly
popular and creates strong connections
Shanghai, China
This award-winning masterplan for
Shanghai’s second Central Business
District covers an area of 280 hectares
on a site fronting the Huangpu River and
surrounding the existing Oriental Sports
Centre facilities. The proposal establishes
a sustainable planning approach
integrating modern transport solutions
with a considered mixed-use programme
18
to create a world-leading environment
containing a rich and diverse mix of living,
working and leisure activities.
Using a hierarchical transport network
of roads, tramways, cycle and pedestrian
routes the masterplan establishes a series
of neighbourhoods, each containing a mix
of office, retail, education and hospitality
facilities arranged around open parks and
waterways. The development is anchored
commercially with the inclusion of a
comprehensive media production and
broadcast facility providing Shanghai with
a centralised, modern media hub.
Wanda WenzhOu
Wenzhou China
Wanda Wenzhou is a large retail-led,
mixed-use project developed by China’s
biggest retail developer, Wanda Group.
Since Wanda Group has its own planning
design institute, all masterplans and
building plans were created inhouse
before Chapman Taylor was commissioned
to provide the facade design and continue
the design development.
MIxEd USE
RETAIL
The visually unique design is created out
of a series of three-dimensional vertical
elements intended to create a dynamic
finish. This allows the building to
integrate with lighting and landscape,
creating the idea of movement in the
completed façade.
allee
Budapest, Hungary
Allee is a mixed-use scheme of 47,000m²
comprising retail & leisure, 89 residential
units and 7,000m² office space in
Budapest’s lively 11th district.
A combination of global experience
and local cultural sensitivity was key
in the delivery of this highly contextual
development in the heart of the city
centre. The main focus was on the
wider masterplan and the connectivity
to the surrounding city fabric with new
pedestrianised streets, two new public
squares and a new local park. This
approach of designing from the outside
in, enabled the team to avoid the pitfalls
of the usual ‘box’ type commercial
developments and give the local residents
a new meeting place to own and cherish.
Sustainability was the determining factor
in the choice of building materials and
technologies. The use of durable local
materials, such as limestone, marble and
red brick was combined with high quality
modern materials of metal and glass while
the three-level fully glazed atrium and
malls utilise natural ventilation to minimise
energy use.
The retail centre features shops, gourmet
restaurants, cafes, a fitness club, a
Oil village
Tripoli, Libya
Located to the west of the city centre, this
predominately residential development
contains a self sustaining mix of uses to
support this new community comprising
apartments, hotel, restaurants, schools,
retail, offices, villas, social club and a
mosque. The site topography provides
excellent opportunities for visual links with
the coast line, with the unique features
of the coastal headland and a disused
quarry providing a point of difference in
comparison to the neighbouring areas.
A large part of the development is made
up of residential villas which create a new
contemporary residential zone for the
city. By integrating links to the sea and
stepping up the gradient from the coast,
these will establish a new benchmark for
the city. This linkage to the sea provides a
consistent characteristic of the villa zones,
which combined with the landscaping of
the surroundings, and the links across the
site to the community uses, will create a
harmonious living environment between
the sea and the city. The approach has
been to utilise the coastal environment to
the maximum benefit of the development,
seamlessly making it part of a managed
environment. This includes locating uses
on it where possible, while maintaining
public access and leaving space for a
potential new coast road.
Retail, offices and restaurants form a
spine to the development which, when
combined with the community elements,
help to provide a sense of place. This zone
will provide not only the opportunity to
orientate oneself within the development,
but through open visual links to the
road and headland, will also introduce a
gateway to the development and present
its character to the city.
as the southern terminus of its main line,
which connected London with the East
the arched Barlow train shed was the
largest single-span roof in the world.
In an ongoing regeneration project for St
160
designed the integration of shops, cafes
The shops occupy the undercroft, formerly
a Victorian beer store, opening up the floor
Heathrow Airport is the third busiest
airport in the world in terms of total
passenger traffic, handling more
international passengers than any
other airport around the globe.
Chapman Taylor were appointed
lead architect for the interior retail,
catering and public areas of Heathrow
Airport’s Terminal 5 (T5) complex
in 1999, making us one of the
original fifteen first-tier suppliers
and signatories to the agreement.
164
The vision for the £4.3 billion complex
was to create world-class retail and
catering facilities. At the outset, in addition
to providing expertise in international
retail design and trends, we undertook
extensive research with BAA to identify
the world’s best airport retailing. The
retail space on the landside was moulded
around the needs of the check-in
layout and facilities, while the airside
facilities were designed around the main
operational movement of passengers,
and both are on either side of a 400m
primary north-south circulation flow.
The nature of the use of the departure
gates in the core terminal building,
and the walkway route to satellite
buildings in the southern zone of the
terminal, dictated the merchandising
strategy. The majority of passengers in
the southern zone are on international
flights, while most passengers in
the northern zone are domestic. The
different nature of passenger types
TRANSPORTATION
RETAIL
INTERIORS & GRAPhICS
was therefore reflected in a ‘premium’
area of stores in the southern zone
and a ‘high street’ area to the north.
Our design made full use of the singlespan
column free roof to combine space
and natural light with user-friendly checkin
and departure areas. It also made
full use of the outstanding views of the
runway, aircraft and countryside beyond.
The Connector is a new building at
Brussels Airport designed to link two
existing passenger terminals at the
airport and replace an existing 200m
passenger tunnel.
The building will contain all departure
flow from the airport within a simple
screening area, accommodating
passengers from terminals A and B. This
will provide additional space within which
to increase the retail offer around a world
class environment. The existing baggage
reclaim hall will also be extended within
the new building.
The winning solution is an articulated
buliding with a north-light orientated roof
and a glass façade, solar protected with
transparent perforated metal screens.
166
Bridging the gap between structural
efficiency and an elegant and expressive
finish, the double-height building
encourages passengers to dwell while
the interior design provides a seamless
connection between the two existing
buildings. Strategically planned routes
and spaces are designed to lead the
passengers through the buildings and
enhance their experience with the use of
pleasing and dynamic shapes.
The Connector will procure an additional
30,000m2 and has an estimated cost
of €45 million. Completion is expected
during 2015.
