Welcome to the 12th edition of Hospitality Action’s newsletter re:action.
It is my great pleasure to be able to write this introduction as the Chairman of
the hospitality industry’s benevolent charity.
Having been a trustee for the past 4 years I was delighted to accept the role,
following in the steps of Bob Cotton OBE, who has given the charity such focus
and support in his time as Chairman. He will continue to support us in the role of
President and trustee. There have also been other changes within the charity with
the retirement of Edward Middleton, who has been our honorary treasurer for 16
years keeping HA finances on an even keel. I would like to welcome Richard Ball,
managing director of Calcot Manor, on to our board of trustees. I am sure he will
add great value with his knowledge and experience of the industry.
This edition of re:action updates all the news from the charity both in terms
of fundraising and how we help our beneficiaries but I would like to draw your
attention to one particular item.
Lesley Gardner, secretary to the Chief Executive, has been working with HA
since she left school – an incredible 37 years. In January of this year she was
awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list for her services to the hospitality
industry. Very well deserved congratulations to Lesley for her achievement – see
page 7 for her story.
On closing I would like to remind everyone that during these times of credit
crunch and belt tightening, that your industry charity needs your support more
than ever. Requests for assistance continue to increase year on year from people
in times of real crisis. Only with your continued help can we make these people’s
lives a little easier when they need it most.

Show dinner
raises £6,000
Over 200 leading names in the
hospitality, leisure and tourism
industry attended the Hotel
& Catering Show’s annual
Gourmet Dinner on Tuesday
11th March, which took place
at the Bournemouth Highcliff
Marriott Hotel. The prestigious
event treated guests to a
five-course dining experience
and raised a fantastic £6,198
for Hospitality Action’s
beneficiaries.
Charlotte Hockey –
organiser of the dinner – said:
“We are thrilled that our
event has generated these
much-needed funds and
helps us, the Southern Board,
towards our annual target of
£10,000.”
Golfers brave
the weather
for £5,000
The Annual Caterer & Licensee
Golf Day was once again
held at Canford Magna
Golf Club near Wimbourne
in Dorset, this year taking
place on Monday 7th July.
Despite somewhat inclement
conditions, 60 golfers from
the industry competed in 27
holes of golf whilst raising
over £5,000 for their industry
charity.

Grado waitresses offer delicious tapas
Spanish fundraising fiesta
One hundred hoteliers, restaurateurs
and suppliers raised £10,000 at a
Spanish themed evening of tapas,
sherry and top-notch food at Paul
Heathcote’s Grado restaurant in
Manchester on Monday 16th June. The
event, sponsored by Allied Irish Bank’s
Hotels Sector team in Manchester,
drew esteemed restaurateurs including
Michelin-starred Paul Kitching,

On 3rd June we saw nearly 500 industry
people battle it out in round two of our
exciting Question of Support event at
Wembley Stadium. The night was a
great success, fun was had by all and
a staggering £60,000 was raised for
those in the industry who have fallen on
hard times and need our help. During
the meal guests took part in a quiz
based on the popular TV programme
‘Question of Sport’, using a keypad to

Heathcote, who has helped raise a
remarkable £75,000 for the charity

into the spirit of fun. I am delighted that
the event was such a success and
raised a fantastic amount for the charity”.
Fine Dining with a View
We were thrilled to start 2008 with a spectacular event on the
25th February, held at The Gherkin (left) in the heart of London’s
financial district. Guests were treated to stunning views, a seven
course feast courtesy of Searcy and in return raised a fantastic
£12,000 for the charity.

The hospitality industry’s competitive
spirits commenced battle on Thursday
15th May at our 8th “It’s a Knockout”
competition, raising over £16,000. The
event was held in London’s Holland
Park and attracted lots of attention
from passers-by as giant inflatable
chickens jumped over bails of hay,
foam-soaked bodies emerged from the
“Human Washing Machine” and the
“Dinghy Derby”, brought a whole new
meaning to watersports.

Would you jump out
of a plane for HA?
Supporters of HA have been facing their
fears, leaping out planes at 10,000 feet, free
falling and then gliding through the clouds at
120mph, all in the name of charity! As Alex
Sacker from Carousel Events, who jumped
with two of his colleagues, commented, ‘What
a fantastic morning it was! 30 miles visibility
with a few somersaults on the exit as I asked
him to be as crazy as he wanted! Such fun!’
They raised a fantastic £2,800 which gave
them all the chance to experience a tandem
skydive for free and raise significant funds
for HA. If you are interested in this once in a
lifetime experience and think you can raise the
minimum sponsorship of £395, please call 020

Foam-filled mayhem raises £16,000
The team from Caterer.com was
obviously confident when they picked
their team name – ‘Still Number One’ –
but their confidence paid off as they
scooped the top prize, pipping last
year’s winning team ‘P&G Professional
Fairies’ to the post. Other winners
included Dewberry Redpoint for its 118
118 wig and moustache combos and
Aramark for the team name
“Hospitalised” – and for completing the
games in white coats and stethoscopes!

Growing up
with The Garden
House Hotel
The personal memoirs of DM Reynolds, who
sadly passed away in November 2007, have
inspired a flood of donations to Hospitality
Action in tribute of his life and work. The Garden
House Hotel is part of Cambridge’s history and
as such Michael’s memories of growing up
in his parents’ hotel and then continuing their
good work have proved a fascinating read for
many. In tribute to this, donations have reached
a staggering £1,000.
BHA Luncheon
comes up trumps
again for HA
Nearly £6,000 was once again raised for
Hospitality Action and Springboard, through a
raffle at the annual BHA Luncheon at the
Grosvenor House. The lucky winner of the raffle
has a chance to watch a show in the Nestlé
Foodservice corporate box at the O2 Arena.

Golden Keys raise £7,000
The Society of the Golden Keys of Great Britain and the
Commonwealth has once again raised an incredible £7,000 for
Hospitality Action.
At the society’s annual cocktail reception at The Mandarin
Oriental Hotel, London Paul Still, President of The Society of the
Golden Keys presented Penny Moore, Chief Executive with the
donation.
The society was formed in 1952 after a meeting of Head Hall
Porters of several leading London hotels. Ever since the society
has been promoting friendship and camaraderie amongst its
200+ members across the UK.

to increase both the number of
colleges visited and students
advised on the dangers of alcohol
and substance abuse.

Malmaison & Hotel
du Vin get stuck in!
Award winning, luxury hotel group Malmaison &
Hotel du Vin have named us their Charity of the
Year and are going all out to raise as much
money as possible for their industry charity. The
whole team is on board and they have devised a
rigorous schedule of fundraising. Marathons will
be run, silly costumes donned, events attended
and shaky tins rattled, all in the name of charity.
We’ll keep you posted on how they get on!
Raising awareness
the Bunzl way
Not content with supporting HA purely through
generous donations and attending events,
Bunzl decided to get involved with raising
awareness of HA. By inserting a bespoke
awareness leaflet in each consolidated delivery,
they ensured that the important message that
HA is here to help and how to contact us for
help reached not only those packing the boxes
but also every employee that the 10,000 boxes

Charity of the Year
Having chosen Hospitality Action as their nominated charity of the year, Premier Inn pledged
to raise an incredible £500,000. The whole team has been furiously fundraising and to date
we have received a fantastic £ 75,000. From pyjama parties to mountain climbing, raffles,
quiz nights, cycle rides and bag packing at M&S, they have been very busy! On 26th February,
however, they all took part in one very special activity... Purple Hair Day!

a truly exciting, new initiative to raise money for both charities.
Meal Appeal has been specially designed to encourage and enable the
hospitality industry to ‘give a little back’ and help those less fortunate than ourselves
in a way that is wonderfully simple, and couldn’t be easier to administer.

Last year Hospitality Action spent £460,887 supporting 1,506 people
In 2007 we helped:
● 110 people with a Top-Up grant (regular financial support to people past pension age)
● 63 people with a Crisis Grant (awarded to people of working age to help with general living costs following a crisis resulting
in sudden loss of income e.g. bereavement or illness)
● 437 people with Essential Needs Grants (one-off grants offering assistance towards the cost of an item or to improve
quality of life e.g. medical equipment, heating and clothing)
49% of grants given were in response to poverty and 36% to life changing illness
We also provided vital communication and assistance to our 1,046 Family Members
(retirees of the industry who have grown isolated over the years)
We reached 9,781 students in 203 colleges and universities with the Ark message

Family Members re:action
Family Members Lunches
So far in 2008 we have been able to host Family Members lunches in London and
Taunton and as always they were greatly enjoyed by our Family Members. These lunches
allow us to build a better relationship with our Family Members and for the Family
Members it is an opportunity to be spoilt for a short while. At all of the lunches we were
treated like VIPS and for many it was a rare opportunity to enjoy such an event. Equally it
allows the Family Members to meet new people from their area, giving them a chance to
reminisce and also make new friends.
The Holiday Inn Mayfair has very
kindly hosted 2 lunches so far this
year in March and June and there are
2 more scheduled for September and
December. On 17th March our Family
Members in the London area were
treated to a St Patrick’s Day celebration
including hats!

On 9th June our London Family
Members were able to return to the
Holiday Inn Mayfair to catch up with
friends and enjoy a sumptuous summer
lunch. No hats this time, but this did not
stop them from having a great time!

On the 11th March we headed west to our first Family Members Lunch in
Taunton. The Holiday Inn in Taunton created a great ambiance and laid on
an impressive carvery to suit all tastes.

As we were going to press we were in the midst of organising lunches at Calcot Manor near Tetbury and Beefeater
in Whitstable, Kent for our Family Members in each respective area. We will bring you all the details and photos in

Mrs Wedge - Cook - Aberystwyth
In her own words, Mrs Wedge tells us why our help made the worst time
in her life that little bit more bearable...
Dear Sir/Madam
Paul my husband died April 22nd 2006, only five weeks after having the diagnosis of primary liver cancer.
Paul had worked very hard all of his life, doing thirteen hours a day as a Store Manager in the ‘Ideal Bakery’ for
30 years. He was never ill and hadn’t been to the doctor for 17 years.
Our four children and myself were absolutely devastated when Paul passed away at only 47 years of age,
especially as my sister Dawn had died only three years before from lymphoma cancer at the age of 44. Our
children Simon, Matthew, Lindsey and Selina, ages 22, 21, 16 and 8 were heartbroken to lose their wonderful
Dad, who did so many hobbies with them and was truly fantastic.
When Paul died the only wage of the household also went. Even though he hadn’t been on very good wages,
we just about managed. In Aberystwyth the wages are very poor and we had a mortgage to pay as well. I had
terrible trouble getting Widows Pension and had to wait for months for it to come through so your financial help
has been wonderful.
We have EPG Gas central heating which is very expensive to run and your help made sure that I had the
money to keep the house warm. My two sons have left home but the 16 and 8 year old daughters still needed
to go on school trips. Lindsey went on a geography trip for her A levels and Selina went to Pendine Sands with
Llanfarian Primary school. Both these trips were expensive and your help with the money was a great help.
Thanks to your wonderful help I haven’t had to worry too much about money and that makes things a lot
easier even though emotionally we will never get over the way our Paul had to go and the great loss without
him. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for thinking about us at the worst time of our lives.

Do you enjoy having a chat, sharing a cup of tea?
Our Family Members do but many are lonely or isolated.
All of our Family Members are over pension age
and would have worked in the hospitality industry
for at least 7 years. We have over 1,100 Family
Members across the UK and it is our aim to remain
aware of the personal wellbeing of each one of
them and to provide personal contact in the form
of a visitor for those Family Members who would
welcome it.
We are looking for caring volunteer visitors
to join our valued team, especially people from
Scotland, Nottinghamshire, Northumberland and
Birmingham (but all areas welcome!).
The important qualities needed are warmth,
sense of humour, empathy, patience and listening

skills. In return, you will receive appreciation and
support and the satisfaction of knowing that your
contribution has made a positive difference to
someone’s quality of life.
Your time commitment need only be an hour or
two a month but it will mean so much to our Family
Member.
Visitors need no previous experience. You will
receive training and ongoing support from head
office and expenses will be reimbursed.

The Ark Foundation
Both students and lecturers alike have been keeping themselves busy
in 2008. Here’s what they’ve been up to...
Firstly, thank you to Portsmouth
Highbury College who kindly
donated £500 from their Student
Enrichment Fund towards furthering
the important work of the Ark
Foundation. On a slightly different
note, students from Mid Cheshire
College got stuck into fundraising
with some biscuit selling and leg
waxing (see below)!

As shown in the photo, the leg
waxing was an act of bravery in aid
of the charity but together with the
biscuit selling, it raised £223 so it
was all worth it! Thank you to them
all for their efforts!
Having received regular visits
from Ken Crosland, the students
of City College Brighton’s catering
department decided to hold a raffle
to show their support for the Ark
Foundation.
They raised a fantastic £663
to which Ken commented, “This
money is the lifeblood of the charity
but even more important is the
absolutely amazing commitment
the students have put in to it, and

the direction and support given by
the staff at the college. I come to
City College once a year to deliver
the industry awareness seminar
on alcohol and drugs. The college
is amazingly supportive and the
seminar is always well received
by the students so to have this
kind of support given in return is
superb”.

The original idea for the Ark came from Michael Quinn MBE an acclaimed and respected Chef at the top of his career as
Maitre Chef de Cuisine at The Ritz Hotel, London who through stress, pressure of work and unsociable hours, turned to
alcohol. During his recovery he felt he wanted to put something back into the industry which for many years had provided him
with work. He is currently in Australia, spreading the message of Ark globally. See www.arkglobal.org for more info.
Michael is joined by Peter Kay who is also Chief Executive of Tony Adam’s Sporting Chance charity for footballers. Peter
delivers his heartfelt personal story of near death and recovery to raise awareness of the dangers of alcoholism and addiction
to young people entering the industry. Both Peter and Michael have been recognized for their commitment to the Ark
Foundation through the Special Award Catey in 2007.
Ken Crosland has been a member of the Ark team for over four years. His unique story of misuse began whilst working in a
number of New York’s top restaurants and clubs, and continued in a successful sales management career for a number of
leading media and entertainment companies. He has subsequently been in recovery for almost ten years. Ken specialises in
delivering the Ark message to the corporate world through the Ark for Business (see page 15).
In June 2004, while working at Jamie Oliver’s ‘Fifteen’, Chris Mordue watched Peter Kay deliver an alcohol and drugs seminar.
Here he identified the seriousness of his alcohol and drug addiction, made the important phone call reaching out for help and
has remained sober ever since, passionate about working with young people.
Kevin Burlison has recently joined the Ark team. Having worked with top chefs including Joel Robuchon, Michael Quinn at
Ettingham Park Hotel and under David Miller at The Ritz, Kevin earned recognition and respect within the industry. By 2000 he
had burnt out and was deep in alcoholism. However, through AA, Kevin got his life back on track, has been sober for 17
months and is helping to spread the important Ark message.

Ark for Business re:action
The Ark for Business
In a 2007 survey by Caterer and Hotelkeeper, findings showed that 40% of respondents had witnessed
colleagues taking drugs at work. 1 % had personally taken drugs at work and over 7 in 10 of those
surveyed had seen colleagues misusing drugs or alcohol either during work or immediately prior to work.
The pace and demands of the Hospitality Industry have always made it a
stressful environment. As with other industries alcohol and drug misuse are
rising dramatically in the workplace and it’s likely to be costing businesses far
more than they think.
Since 2005, the Ark Foundation has worked with key hospitality employers
