of a lifetime! First timers are more than welcome and if you raise the
minimum amount of sponsorship you’ll get to jump for free!
You don’t have to jump out of a plane to make a difference. If you like
the idea of doing something out of the ordinary whilst raising £££s for HA
why not take part in an overseas challenge? Cycle London to Paris or
travel further a field by trekking Nepal, Iceland or Costa Rica!

Welcome to the 14th edition of Hospitality Action’s Newsletter
re:action.
Having recently accepted an invitation to join our industry’s
benevolent Charity’s board of trustees it gave me great pleasure to
write this brief introduction.
I have enjoyed working with Penny Moore, our CEO and her
team over the past few years serving as a member of the London
Board and have been very pleased with the success that the team
has had in particular with events such as A Question of Support
and the numerous special evenings at some of our finest dining
establishments.
This success would not have been achieved however without
the very generous support of a reasonably small group of people
and one of our major challenges moving forward, must be to
garner a broader range of support for our fundraising mission.
The truth is that Hospitality Action is a terrific charity that has a very
real benefit to many people’s lives. So if I could ask you to read this
edition and enjoy it’s content but also to reflect on this question:
“Are you doing all that you can to help?”
I am honoured to be able to give something back to an industry
that has so far been very good to me and I am really looking forward
to working with the other trustees in the coming years and doing my
part to ensure that our charity flourishes.

once getting lost! The Calcot
Cycling Team have managed
to raise over £1,000.
3663 Golf Day
teed off nicely
A great day was had by all on
the 23rd September at the
3663 Key Supplier Charity
Golf Day which was held at
the prestigious Moor Park Golf
Club. The event raised a very
impressive £35,000 for the
charity.

HA invited to high
tea at Highgrove
The stunning gardens at Highgrove
On the 1st September HRH The Prince of
Wales very kindly allowed Hospitality Action
an exclusive tour of the gardens at Highgrove
which was preceded by a delicious lunch
at Calcot Manor. This event raised almost
£12,000.
Mosimann’s festive fundraiser
On the 30th November Anton
Mosimann, one of the worlds most
respected and influential chefs, hosted
a festive fundraising dinner for HA.
Guests experienced a carefully crafted
five-course culinary masterpiece with
many of the club’s signature dishes.
Set in a beautifully converted 19th
century church, the magnificent
surroundings enhanced the evening’s
seasonal cheer and goodwill whilst
raising £13,000.

Breakfast Briefing – Protecting our
Industry Against Alcohol And Drug Misuse
Since 2007, the Ark for Business
has worked with a growing number
of companies across the hospitality
sector, helping them to implement
best practice in managing the risks
presented by alcohol and drugs in
the workplace. A breakfast briefing
on 18th November at Rubens at
the Palace Hotel provided senior
industry colleagues an opportunity

The Manchester Hoteliers
Association do it again!
Over 500 people gathered at the
Manchester Hoteliers Association
Ball on the 29th October at the
newly refurbished Ramada Jarvis
Piccadilly Hotel. Each year the MHA
celebrates its people through a high
profile charity Ball. This year the big
hearted hoteliers community dug
deep and over £10,000 was raised
for HA.
Le Manoir raises
funds for HA
£10,000 was recently raised by the
team at Le Manoir, one of the most
illustrious gastronomic and luxury
hotels in Britain and on the 8th
January Raymond Blanc presented
a cheque to Penny Moore outside a
very snowy Le Manoir!

The Hospitality Sparkle Ball
HA pulled out
all the stops
once again
at its annual
Ball on 14th October at the Lancaster,
London. Over £80,000 was raised
making the evening a resounding
success. The Hospitality Ball is one of
our most popular events and we were
overjoyed that even in these difficult
times so many people came out to
support those in need.

HA Week
Between the 18th and 24th May 2009 the industry’s pant-wearing action heroes were
out in force and raised a staggering £100,000 in the process!
With over 50 companies signed up in our first ever fundraising week, the array of
activities were vast and often ingeniously innovative! There were marshmallow eating
competitions, dress-down days, raffles, cake sales, football matches, doughnut eating
competitions, ice cream sales, sponsored trim trails and even a sponsored team
meeting held at the top of Scaffell Pike.

“We held a sponsored team meeting at the top of Scafell Pike
– it’s not quite Kilimanjaro, but was a challenging climb of nearly
1000m. The whole meeting was conducted with pants over
trousers of course and raised a large proportion of the £10,000
target set for our National Accounts team”.

Case study
Annie Giles-Quinn – Manchester – Catering Manager
“Thanks to your support, Annie and her son’s lives
have been made that little bit more bearable”
Annie hasn’t had it easy. A
long standing member of
the hospitality industry Annie
worked in catering for 28
years.
After separating from her
husband it was left to Annie
to financially support her two
children. As a single mother
times were tough but Annie
gained confidence in herself
and the family pulled together.
Then tragedy struck. Annie
was diagnosed with breast
cancer on two separate
occasions. With her children
dependent upon her the
impact on family life was hard.
The endless hospital trips and

constant stress and worry
were only relieved when Annie
went into remission.
But life can be cruel. If
coping with cancer hadn’t
been enough Annie’s sight
began to deteriorate. She was
forced to leave her job and in
2007 was registered blind. Her
self-belief hit an all time low.
Lacking in confidence Annie
was unable to leave her home
without assistance and began
to rely on her sons for nearly
everything.
Depressed, isolated and
lonely she turned to Hospitality
Action for help. We were able
to provide Annie with special

How we can help
How we help re:action
Hospitality Action is the trade charity for the hospitality industry and so we
exist to help people like you. We offer a range of services aimed at past and
present workers from the industry.
Sometimes it just takes a small change in circumstances to turn a
manageable situation into an unmanageable one. For example, the loss
or drop in income caused by illness, redundancy or caring for a loved can
present a series of problems that most of us would struggle to deal with.
Whatever the reason we are here to listen and provide help wherever we can.

Information and Signposting
This service is provided by our experienced
and professional team. We can advise on
a wide range of organisations that offer
financial help and other relevant assistance.
Grants
We offer a range of grants depending
on the applicants’ situation. Such as
one-off help for an essential household
item like a cooker, medical equipment, or
ongoing help during a period of crisis such
as ill health.
Application process
We need to make an assessment of
your financial circumstances and overall
needs before we can offer financial

Family Members Scheme
Our Family Members Scheme is a contact
scheme for people who have worked within
the hospitality industry and are now retired. It
is a free scheme and is open to anyone who is
over pension age and has worked within the
hospitality industry in the UK for at least 7 years.
Family Members lunches

The scheme consists of:
l Informative bi-monthly newsletter
l Birthday and Christmas card and gift
l Befriending visits (where we have volunteers)
l Local Regional lunches (usually around 20
people)
If you know of anyone who would like to become a member, download our application

Family Members lunches allow us to build a better relationship with our Family
Members, all who have dedicated many years to the industry, and they offer the perfect
afternoon out. The lunches give them an opportunity to meet new friends in their area or
catch up with old friends and the perfect place to reminisce about past times.

caring Volunteer Visitors from
across the UK to join our
valued team.
You need no previous
experience and will receive
training and ongoing support
from head office. If you
have a friendly, sensitive
manner and can provide a
listening ear please contact

What’s Required
The minimum commitment is
just 2 visits per year (though
we would be delighted if you
could take on more!) Each
visit lasts about an hour
and can be carried out in
the evening or at weekends
and many of our existing
volunteers fit the visits around
a busy work and home life.
Why Volunteer?
As a volunteer you will not
only be supporting some of
our more isolated industry
retirees but you will also have
a great time.

Margaret & Stuart Ritchie visit in the Edinburgh area. For them
“visiting the Family Members is a pleasure and we are
always warmly welcomed with a cup of tea, hearing
about their grandchildren, families and holidays. I
feel we get more out of these visits than they do,
always coming away happy and realising how little it
takes to do a good turn. Doing this makes you very
humble as there are a lot of lonely and kindly people
out there just waiting for someone to knock at their
door”.

Elizabeth is a Family Member in London. She is visited by
Denise and writes, “I lost my sight 5 years ago. When
Hospitality Action set up the volunteer visitor
scheme I was quick to apply. Very soon I met
Denise and for the past 2 years she has been visiting
me. She is a charming, kind woman and we chat over a
cup of tea. I am most grateful to HA for setting up
this service, which gives me another valuable link to
the hospitality industry.”

The Ark Foundation
Our presenters...
The original idea for the Ark came from Michael Quinn MBE an acclaimed and respected Chef when
at the top of his career as Maitre Chef de Cuisine at The Ritz Hotel, London turned to alcohol. During
his recovery he felt he wanted to put something back into the industry which for many years had
provided him with work.
Shelagh Jansen – Manager and Co-ordinator of The Ark Foundation says: “Our sincerest thanks goes
to all the college students who have helped us with fundraising this year. The Ark Presenters really enjoy
their visits to the Colleges and greatly appreciate the support of the staff and students.”

Michael is joined by Peter Kay who is also Chief Executive of Tony Adam’s Sporting Chance Peter
delivers his heartfelt personal story of near death and recovery to raise awareness of the dangers of
alcoholism and addiction to young people entering the industry. Both Peter and Michael have been
recognized for their commitment to the Ark Foundation through the Special Award Catey in 2007.
Ken Crosland has been a member of the Ark team for over five years. His unique story of misuse
began whilst working in a number of New York’s top restaurants and clubs, and continued in a
successful sales management career for a number of leading media and entertainment companies.
He has subsequently been in recovery for ten years. Ken not only visits the colleges but also
specialises in delivering the Ark message to the corporate world through the Ark for Business.
“I have had feedback from tutors that the students
involved found the session most informative and
thought provoking. The Ark seminars have real, life
changing outcomes in terms of the direction of a
percentage of youngsters in this highly vulnerable
group. We highly value our links with the Ark
Foundation over the past few years and your visits
