<strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> apparel <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

<strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s diverse geography and demographic makeup means that the country has<br />

developed lead<strong>in</strong>g-edge children’s wear, sportswear and active wear.<br />

The apparel sector benefits from hav<strong>in</strong>g a wide range of companies of vary<strong>in</strong>g sizes and<br />

structures produc<strong>in</strong>g a broad range of garments.<br />

Many of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s lead<strong>in</strong>g apparel manufacturers respond to their natural environment<br />

by us<strong>in</strong>g home-grown f<strong>in</strong>e wool or other natural fibres <strong>in</strong> their garments.<br />

The country’s success <strong>in</strong> this sector is help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>form global consumers’ perceptions of <strong>New</strong><br />

<strong>Zealand</strong> as a nation of new ideas and new th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

They <strong>in</strong>clude cut, make and trim operations that produce f<strong>in</strong>ished garments on a contract<br />

basis us<strong>in</strong>g fabrics supplied to them, through to vertically <strong>in</strong>tegrated operations which<br />

produce their own fabric, manufacture their own garments and sell those garments <strong>in</strong> their<br />

own stores.<br />

Global brands such as Icebreaker, Pumpk<strong>in</strong> Patch, Bendon, Macpac, Moontide, Orca, Snowy<br />

Peak/Untouched World and Swanndri are well known and highly sought-after among their<br />

niche markets.<br />

Fast facts<br />

� <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s comb<strong>in</strong>ed fashion and apparel exports were worth $326 million <strong>in</strong> 2007.


� They have grown by over $10 million <strong>in</strong> each of the past three years.<br />

� Over 70 percent of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s apparel exports currently go to Australia. Europe, the United States and North Asia<br />

are strongly emerg<strong>in</strong>g markets.<br />

� <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> companies are renowned for their use of f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> mer<strong>in</strong>o wool and other natural fibres such<br />

as possum, cashmere and silk.<br />

� <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> is recognised as a leader <strong>in</strong> sports and outdoor-wear, and baby and children’s cloth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

� The country cont<strong>in</strong>ues to develop <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly advanced applications of wool as a technical fibre.<br />

International <strong>in</strong>novations<br />

� Launched <strong>in</strong> 1994, Icebreaker was the first company <strong>in</strong> the world to develop a mer<strong>in</strong>o wool layer<strong>in</strong>g system for the<br />

outdoors. It was also the first outdoor apparel company <strong>in</strong> the world to source mer<strong>in</strong>o direct from growers, a system it<br />

began <strong>in</strong> 1997. There are now 10 dist<strong>in</strong>ct pure mer<strong>in</strong>o fabrics <strong>in</strong> the Icebreaker system, cover<strong>in</strong>g underwear, mid<br />

layer, and outerwear. Icebreaker exports to 30 countries and is sold <strong>in</strong> over 2,000 stores.<br />

� Mer<strong>in</strong>o Kids, founded by Amie Nilsson <strong>in</strong> 2003, started out with the vision of creat<strong>in</strong>g 100 percent natural and safe<br />

products that would meet the needs of modern parents. The <strong>bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> is a passionate advocate for mer<strong>in</strong>o wool<br />

which is seen as a wonder fibre, <strong>in</strong> recognition of its softness and its natural properties that help ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> safe and<br />

comfortable temperatures for sleep<strong>in</strong>g children. To this, Amie has brought a dedication to design excellence that has<br />

seen her w<strong>in</strong> Product Design Awards from International Forum Design Hannover (iF) for the Go Go BagTM (2007),<br />

the CocooiTM wrap (2008) and the CocooiTM <strong>New</strong>born Sleepbag (2009).<br />

� Partner/designer Charlotte Devereux established EGG Maternity seven years ago – frustrated at not be<strong>in</strong>g able to f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

the style of clothes she wanted to wear when pregnant. As baby cloth<strong>in</strong>g and personal products for Mum and Baby<br />

were added to the range the brand grew <strong>in</strong>to Egg For All Seasons. There are now eight different ranges of<br />

comfortable, versatile and fashionable cloth<strong>in</strong>g. EGG exports to Australia, Asia, the United States and the United<br />

K<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />

� Technical <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> fabrics and a strong focus on creative design are add<strong>in</strong>g a new twist to the old silk story at<br />

Duned<strong>in</strong>-based company, Silkbody. Run by father and daughter team David and Emily Cooper, Silkbody specialises<br />

<strong>in</strong> lightweight, luxurious f<strong>in</strong>ished silk garments. The company recently received a European OutDoor <strong>Industry</strong> Award


for its <strong>in</strong>novative pure silk soft shell layer SilkFleece. Silkbody exports to Australia, Germany, the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom and<br />

Chile.<br />

� Kia Kaha cloth<strong>in</strong>g has grown from a humble start as a casual apparel mail-order <strong>bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> operated from a garage,<br />

<strong>in</strong>to an <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong>. Emphasis is on Maori designs, and quality fabrics and cuts. Its cloth<strong>in</strong>g and accessories<br />

are now available to wholesale and retail customers <strong>in</strong> Australia, the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom, the United States and Europe.<br />

� Untouched World was the first fashion company to be recognised for susta<strong>in</strong>ability by the United Nations. It is an<br />

ethical lifestyle fashion brand based on the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> lifestyle. Untouched World grew out of a desire to create a<br />

positive, susta<strong>in</strong>able future and is famous worldwide for its use of its signature organic fabrics such as Organic<br />

Mounta<strong>in</strong>silk and cotton.<br />

� Karen Walker is work<strong>in</strong>g with Levis to produce Levi’s Eco jeans from 100 percent cotton, grown without synthetic<br />

fertilisers or pesticides. All external packag<strong>in</strong>g is made from organic fabric or recycled paper and pr<strong>in</strong>ted with soybased<br />

<strong>in</strong>k. The range uses recycled buttons, rivets and zippers. The dye is chemical-free and is made from a process<br />

<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g natural <strong>in</strong>digo, potato starch, mimosa flower and Marseille soap.<br />
