Member Services Manager Report
By Mark Seymour
After discussion with AMIST Super as a sponsor of the industry
they have generously offered to supply a yearly planner to our
members. One is enclosed with this newsletter. We urge you to
place this on your wall or fold it and keep it in your Food Safety Plan.
Use it to list dates of your regulatory requirements i.e. calibrations,
pest control, internal audit, management review dates and more.
We thank AMIST, in particular Melinda Gibson and Royston Bennett
for listening to our request and supplying these to our members.
There has recently been some negligence when following the
Listeria guidelines. Some members have been repackaging or
cryovacing ready-to-eat meats without undergoing the required testing
regime. These members have been placed on intensified audits, which
can be a big cost factor and at this stage of the year can result in the
banning of smallgoods sales through your shop. We have helped
some members with training so if you are unsure of how to follow
the mandatory guidelines for repackaging ready-to-eat meats, or
require further information please don’t hesitate to contact us.
The first aid course mentioned in the October newsletter is now
taking shape with William Angliss providing the venue and a
registered first aid trainer to present the course. This can be offered
as a classroom situation and a two-day course will provide you with
the certificate of qualification if completed successfully. Interest in
the course should be directed to Ivon Shell of William Angliss on 03
9606 2112 or contact AMIC if you would like more information.
I would like to thank all of the participants in the 2011 Sausage King and
Smallgoods Competitions both metropolitan and regionally for providing
us with yet again superb product and outstanding support in 2011. The
TAFE colleges of Victoria that allow us to use their facilities and provide
us with judging panels perform an excellent service to our industry.
As this will be the final newsletter for 2011 I would like to thank
members for their support of AMIC and hope you that have a wonderful
and profitable Christmas trading period. Your AMIC office will be open
and available for contact throughout the Christmas season.
on electricity prices –
at no fee to you.
Brochures were sent out
earlier this year and while the response has been
good (nearly 200 members are now on cheaper
rates), many members have not responded.
Unfortunately, shopping centres tend to
manage electricity pricing for the whole
centre and this may restrict your
opportunities. However, why not give your
shopping centre management the brochure?
There are a number of people making “cold calls”
offering deals, which can be annoying and of
some concern as to their integrity, so by
registering your interest with Make It Cheaper via
AMIC, you will know who you are dealing with
and they will call you at a time convenient to
you. Don’t forget, you can ask for prices for your
home and even your staff can use the service.
If you wish to see if Make It Cheaper can help
you, simply ring the AMIC office or call your
Member Services Manager or Officer and we
will send you a form to complete and return.
A Word from the Auditor
By John Buchanan
SGS, the appointed auditor for almost all
Victorian AMIC ILB members, has a timely
reminder to take note of the change of
season and modify your shop accordingly.
Spring is in the air and the silly season
is almost upon us! It is now a good time
to do a ‘Spring Clean’ and prepare for
the busy months ahead.
Go through your shop and check things like
dry goods/flavours/marinades and ensure
that they are all still within their use by
date. If there is a product you haven’t used
for years, it is very likely that you never
will use it so get rid of it! If anything else
is lying around that you won’t use again,
clean up the clutter as it will make it easier
to maintain the hygiene of your shop.
It is also a good time to check that your
fridges and displays are ready for the
warmer months.
• Are they due for a service?
• If you changed the temperature setting
for winter, lower it now for summer.
• Talk to your staff about being
conscious of the warmer weather and
how much they should bring out of the
chiller at a time to prep.
• Inspect the stacking of product in the
display – if it is too high it won’t keep cold
• Make sure after preparation, product is
chilled down in the coolroom before being
put on display as if it is warm when it
goes in it will not come down in
temperature sufficiently. (Displays are
designed to hold temperature, not chill
down.) This will avoid shelf life issues and
other potential issues at an audit or an
unannounced inspection from PrimeSafe.
When you carry out the next scheduled
calibrations, be diligent with the fridges
as this will give you the first indication if
they are starting to drop temperature
control and need re-gassing.
If you have any further queries about
these issues please contact your auditor
or AMIC representative.
I’d like to wish all members a Happy
Christmas and a Prosperous New year.
