New law degrees offered at BU
Business Law, Entertainment Law and Sports Law
Every legal discipline has
its own demands and suits
different kinds of people.
Some graduates will choose
to work in private practice,
for a government body or
within a legal department of a
commercial organisation.
However, for most students,
choosing an area in which to
specialise when deciding to study
Law is probably one step too far!
So our new qualifying pathways
in Sports Law, Entertainment
Law and Business Law
(complementing our established
LLB (Hons) Law and Taxation
Law) all enable students to make
their choice in Year 2.
With only one UCAS code and a
common first year, our students
will have time to reflect on their
abilities and career aims, take
advice from our Careers Service
and undertake a placement
year in a related industry before
embarking on their careers.
Students starting their first stage
of legal training with an LLB
degree at BU from September
2008 will be the first to benefit
from the new choice of named
awards.
Five go to Canada!
Five students on the BA (Hons) TV
Production course at BU participated in
a four-month exchange with Ryerson
University in Toronto, Canada this year.
They went out in January 2007 and got
to experience the snow, the big food and
a whole new learning environment.
They told us about some of the highlights of
their visit:
“Coming to understand another country’s
television industry actually gave me a better
understanding (and appreciation) of our own as I
now have something to compare it to”
Helen Cunnane
“I was able to travel to the US cheaply, visit
Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and New York.
I met some really cool lecturers. I worked on real
films and learned more about the Canadian TV
industry, and therefore appreciated the UK’s TV
industry more.”
Survey shows early advice on HE is crucial
The results of the 2007 Freshers’ Survey
show that students are considering their
HE options sooner than ever before.
We received nearly 2,000 responses to the survey,
which was emailed to students at the beginning of
September. Among the questions asked were how
long ago students started considering coming to
university, and what situation they were in when
they started looking at their options.
“It’s like being on holiday but instead of putting
suncream on you have to work (which has been
so beneficial and fun). There were also such
great opportunities to travel. I’ve been to New
York twice, backpacked in Mexico and been
to the Grand Canyon and the world’s biggest
broadcasting conference in Las Vegas where I met
many useful industry contacts.”
The findings illustrate that a third of respondents
made their decisions while they were in Year 11
or even earlier – and this figure remained the
same even after students who deferred coming
to BU were removed from the results. The figure
has risen significantly since 2006 and the trend of
students seeking advice early looks set to continue.
But the results also revealed that 60% of those
surveyed didn’t have a firm idea of what they
wanted to study at university. The input of careers
advisors and teachers is therefore crucial so that
students are prepared when they come to apply for
university places.
We are here to help you support your students
through this time. Encouraging them to attend
open days, look through prospectuses and think
‘outside the box’ will enable them to make the
right decisions at the right times about their future
careers.
Please use our new website facility, or contact us
direct, if you would like more advice or guidance.
