cited by 54% <strong>of</strong> all <strong>blog</strong>gers interviewed <strong>as</strong> playing a role in their <strong>blog</strong>s, with<br />
other are<strong>as</strong> lagging signific<strong>an</strong>tly behind (see figure 2.11). While the majority<br />
<strong>of</strong> particip<strong>an</strong>ts named a number <strong>of</strong> topics covered (five being the average) the<br />
domin<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> “personal” over other categories is notable.<br />

B<strong>as</strong>ed on these findings, it is possible to postulate a b<strong>as</strong>ic dichotomy between<br />
private <strong>blog</strong>s concerned with “life <strong>an</strong>d experiences” <strong>of</strong> the <strong>blog</strong>ger, <strong>an</strong>d those<br />
concerned with <strong>an</strong>y other topic. While <strong>blog</strong>s concerned with entertainment,<br />
business or religion are sure to differer in m<strong>an</strong>y regards, they all center on<br />
something external to the <strong>blog</strong>ger: a topic, issue or news item he may report,<br />
discuss, criticize or praise, but that is not identical with his life, experience<br />
<strong>an</strong>d reflections. I will use this dichotomy extensively in this chapter <strong>an</strong>d refer<br />
to these two approaches to <strong>blog</strong>-writing <strong>as</strong> ego <strong>blog</strong>ging <strong>an</strong>d topic <strong>blog</strong>ging (see<br />
sections 2.13 <strong>an</strong>d 2.14 for a detailed description <strong>an</strong>d examples that support this<br />
categorization).<br />
