Svět knihy, Ltd. - Company of the Association of Czech Booksellers
and Publishers (ACBP) - has been an active participant
in the Czech book market for the past six years and is currently
preparing the 10th international book fair in Prague.
In the year 1995 Prague hosted two parallel book fairs - the one
organised by the re-established Association of Czech Booksellers
and Publishers attracted numerous visitors, earning the
new BookWorld book fair a deserved place on the Czech book
scene.
The year 1996 was dedicated to Austrian writers, and the French
Institute organised a valuable exposition of the F.X. Šalda
translation support programme, set in a Cyrano de Bergerac
stage design. While still experiencing some growing pains,
the visitors’ response to the book fair was encouraging.
Book World ‘97 featured Finland as its guest of honour, supported
by a rich and varied accompanying programme. It had attracted
over 700 companies and the qualitative jump in its organisation
still makes it one of BookWorld’s most successful years to date.
In that same year ACBP founded Svět knihy, Ltd., which
became its „commercial“ tool in the field of promoting Czech
publishers and literature.
In 1998 BookWorld’s guest of honour had been Israel. The book
fair played host to a large number of writers and its accompanying
programme spread to several Prague venues. Having
attracted permanent awareness of both Czech and foreign
professional public, it started to appear in international book
event calendars.
In 1999 the book fair’s guest was France; the year 2000 had
welcomed Wallonie-Bruxelles. Focusing on literature in the
French language, both these years offered a wide range of pro-
grammes and the interest in books in French had exceeded all
expectations. BookWorld 2000 was listed as part of the Prague
– European City of Culture Project, having presented expositions
of the 9 cities boasting that title.
In 2001 the focus had been on Switzerland and Prague played
host to the Literature Across Frontiers conference, attended
by distinguished guests from both Europe and the USA.
As the emphasis was placed on literature in minority
languages, Switzerland served as a prime example of linguistic
„tolerance“.
In 2002 the central exposition had been devoted to a collective
presentation of the Visegrad states – Poland, Hungary, Slovakia
and the Czech Republic, with the main topic being programmes
for the support of translations.
The entire continent of Africa became the main topic of the
recently ended BookWorld 2003. Attractive programme, great
guests, enthusiastic visitors. This show of African literature
resulted in the biggest number of new translations of works
from the guest territory into Czech in the entire history of the
book fair.
None of this would be possible without co-operation from
numerous Czech and foreign institutions, partner organisations,
support from exhibitors, the ministry of culture, ministry
of foreign affairs, city of Prague, media partners.
The organising ACBP and the BookWorld team would like
to express their gratitude to all its partners and look forward
to meeting their friends and business partners at the 10th
Prague BookWorld 2004 on 6 – 9 May 2004.
Many successes to you all.
Henry Bogdan: The History of the Hapsburgs
Seven Centuries of the House of Hapsburgs
For almost seven centuries the Hapsburgs were among the ruling houses of Europe.
Author of the book - a renowned French historian - presents a colourful portrayal of the lives
of various members of the Hapsburg family, while at the same time conjuring up a clear picture
of European history in the centuries when, to a significant extent, it bore the Hapsburg influence.
Having provided the necessary context for the events and personalities featured in the book,
the author plays these individual acts against the historical background, offering its readers
a very vivid picture, complete with numerous interesting details added for fun and enjoyment.
Tomáš Koutek: Bohemian Town Gates
Historic Reminiscences
If we were to imagine a medieval town, its silhouette would no doubt include a church tower,
the tall and narrow gables of Gothic and early Renaissance houses and also the town’s
fortification, of which town gates formed an integral part. In the town’s fortification system the
point of entry always represented the weakest point and was subject to a very careful design.
As a result, the passage through any town gate was protected by a highly intricate system
of moats and bastions. In its time each gate adopted a highly individual form,
used by the town to boast its significance and wealth. The author of this unique book
will guide the readers through eighty of Czech history’s most remarkable town gates.
Book Production
In 2002, as in previous years, the book production in the Czech
Republic manifested great dynamics despite the disastrous
floods that have hit the state’s capital, which also boasts the
dominant position in the country in terms of books. The number
of published titles was very close to that of the year
before, when it had reached a record height. In the year 2002,
the National Library of the Czech Republic has registered,
based on the number of submitted deposit copies, a total
of 14 278 titles of non-periodical publications, consisting
of 11 915 books and 2363 brochures, i.e. publications of up to
42 pages. 12 625 of these were first editions (10 412 books and
2213 brochures), the rest were re-editions. These data copy
the trends of the year 2001.
Absolute numbers regarding the number of book titles published
in the year 2002 still prove that dropping average
impressions are compensated for on the part of Czech publishers
by publishing a large number of titles, in order to maintain
the existing levels of financial turnover (see TABLE I).
By 31 December 2002 the number of publishers or entities
authorised to produce non-periodic publications in the Czech
Republic was 3267 (see TABLE II), while 1259 publishing houses
have participated on last year’s total book production in
the Czech Republic by publishing at least one book title. Compared
with the previous year this represents a 5% increase,
which could mean some publishing houses have renewed
their activity, but is more likely the result of the activities of
newly registered entities.
The publishing of books in the Czech Republic clearly involves
a greater number of publishing entities than is the case in
countries that have enjoyed uninterrupted natural development,
resulting in a more profiled and concentrated group of book
producers. Nonetheless, despite these numbers seemingly
undermining the claim that similar development is taking
place here - i.e. that the Czech publishing sector is increasingly
concentrated, as indicated by the statistics from previous
years (in 2000, for example, the number had reached 1300,
with less than 1150 a year later) - the decisive share of Czech
book production still lay in the hands of only several dozen
publishers of non-periodical publications. In 2002 only 35 entities
produced more than 100 titles, including university and
state institution publishers, without which the number would
further narrow down to about 20. Last year these leading
twenty publishers were responsible for approximately one
quarter of the total Czech book production. Their share is
even higher in terms of book impressions.
TABLE III lists the main producers on the territory of the
Czech Republic according to the number of published book
titles in the year 2002. While this somewhat mechanical criterion
does offer us some valuable and interesting insight and
enables us to get at least an approximate picture of the companies’
turnover, at the same time it tells us nothing about the
quality and level of excellence of these books. Unfortunately,
this type of data also fails to deliver other important information,
such as the total book impressions or profits made by the
companies in question, which would provide for a more accurate
assessment of the publishers’ real position and share of
the Czech book market. Such complex data, however, are still
unavailable.
Given the specific nature of university and state institution
publishers (usually characterised by a large number of highly
thematic titles at relatively low impressions), these entities
are featured in a separate table (TABLE IV). The annual number
of published titles, decisive for the publishers’ position in
both these tables, does not include reprints, and only features
titles with new ISBN .
Structure of Book Production
The structure of the Czech book production has not changed
to any significant degree in the past several years. Books in
Czech have once again been dominant in Czech Republic’s
book production - amounting to almost 90% (12 826 titles in
absolute numbers). Another 468 titles published in 2002 were
in Czech combined with another language; 172 titles were
multilingual. In the foreign-language production of Czech
publishers, English clearly dominated once again: 466 titles
were published in English, 148 titles in German, 24 in French.
Compared with the year 2001, the National Library of the
Czech Republic has registered a significant increase in the
number of titles in Slovak (108 titles compared with 43 in the
previous year) and a decline in the Polish language production
(9 titles compared with 23 the year before). Among other
languages registered last year were e.g. 4 books in Dutch,
2 in Japanese and Esperanto, one title in Chinese, Classical
Greek, Old Slavonic and Ukrainian. The range of untraditional
languages has narrowed compared with previous years,
while at the same time registering a decrease in quantity.
The share of fiction in last year’s total book production in the
Czech Republic has amounted to 25 % (3605 titles) - a slight
drop compared with the year before. In children’s literature,
on the other hand, the continuous increase in the number of
published titles has been maintained. This increase has
become especially visible in the structure of the Czech book
production within the past several years. In absolute figures
the amount of 586 titles has been reached (with 575 children’s
titles published in 2001). The share of children’s literature
on the total book production has remained practically
unchanged. Once again it amounted to approximately 4%.
The share of school and university textbooks has slightly
exceeded 11% (1578 titles); in comparison with the year
before it is a small decrease both share-wise and in
absolute numbers (12% or 1750 titles in the year 2001). The
comparison of these data in the past five years is shown in
Translations
In 2002 translations constituted approximately a third of the
total Czech book production, which still makes the Czech
Republic, alongside e.g. the Baltic states or Hungary, count
among the highest-producing countries in the world (to compare
the “incomparable”: in Great Britain the share of translations
on the total book production has amounted to about
2-3% in recent years). Very little has changed in terms of
quantity. A total of 4342 translated titles has been published,
331 of which were translations of multilingual publications
(compared with 4352 / 429 the year before). Last year Czech
publishers have offered the readers translations from a total
of 44 languages.
The three most often translated languages have remained
the same since 1990. English is still dominant, with more
than half of all published translations originating in English
(close to 54%). Despite a long-term drop, translations from
German have more or less retained the position from the
previous year. French has once again registered third at
some distance.
A dynamic growth in the quantity of translated titles has
occurred in Slovak (having grown almost fourfold). Also the
number of translations from Russian has practically doubled.
Polish too has scored among the most often translated
Slavonic languages in the Czech Republic last year. Translations
from other Slavonic languages, on the other hand,
remain quite infrequent in the long term, with the total
amount having changed very little, usually reaching about
20 titles each year. In 2002 4 works have been translated
from Slovene and Serbian, 3 from Croatian, 2 from Bulgarian
and 1 from Ukrainian.
Languages of other major cultural regions, translations from
which were the most numerous on Czech book shelves in
the year 2002, included Italian (59 published titles) and Spanish
(32 published titles). It can be said that the situation was
very similar to that of the previous year, with 64 translations
from Italian and 38 from Spanish. Works translated from the
Dutch (27 titles) and Scandinavian languages (Swedish:
10 titles, Norwegian: 8 titles, Danish and Finnish: each with
6 titles) have also scored relatively strongly in last year’s
Czech book production. Compared with the year 2001 there
has been a steep decline in the number of translations from
classical languages such as Latin (4 titles compared with 18)
and Classical Greek (2 titles compared with 13). TABLE VI
shows a quantification of translations from selected languages
in the course of the past five years.
Summary
Available information concerning publishing activities in the
Czech Republic in the past year confirm that books - despite
objective problems and obstacles (floods, small book market)
and subjective complaints and lamentations of most of
the Czech book market’s top players - still count among
important cultural activities in the Czech Republic. This fact
is supported by international statistics, which place the
Czech Republic among the top 15 countries in the world
regarding the number of published titles, with a place in the
elite 10 where the number of published titles per 10 000
inhabitants is concerned.
