the interactions among multiple neurotransmitters; mechanisms of<br />

hypothermic neuroprotection; and the role of oxygen radical mechanisms<br />

and nitric oxide in brain injury. To be eligible for this award, you must<br />

submit an abstract to the International Stroke Conference.<br />

Stroke Care in Emergency Medicine Award<br />

The <strong>American</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Association</strong>/<strong>American</strong> Stroke <strong>Association</strong> is pleased<br />

to present the Stroke Care in Emergency Medicine Award. This award is<br />

open to investigators at all levels who are an AHA/ASA member and<br />

submit an abstract in the Emergency Medicine category to the International<br />

Stroke Conference.<br />

David G Sherman Lecture<br />

This award was established in honor of David G Sherman, MD, a prominent<br />

stroke physician and an internationally recognized leader and researcher<br />

in stroke prevention and treatment. This award supports the history and<br />

continuity between the first generation of stroke neuroscientists who<br />

attended the early years of the International Joint Conference on Stroke and<br />

Cerebral Circulation and the future of the ever increasing new generation<br />

of stroke neurologists who attend the International Stroke Conference. The<br />

award recognizes lifetime contributions to the investigation, management,<br />

mentorship and community service in the stroke field.<br />

Willis Lecture<br />

This award was established in honor of Thomas Willis, a prominent<br />

physician credited with providing the first detailed description of the brain<br />

stem, the cerebellum and the ventricles, with extensive hypotheses about<br />

the functions of these brain parts. The award recognizes contributions to the<br />

investigation and management of stroke – basic science.<br />

Nominations for ISC 2013 Awards<br />

ISC staff will begin accepting nominations for the named ISC awards<br />

on Wednesday, February 1, <strong>2012</strong>. The deadline to submit nominations<br />

for the Feinberg, Sherman and Willis Awards is Wednesday, July 11,<br />

<strong>2012</strong>. Please go to the strokeconference.org, ISC Awards and Lectures<br />

page for more information about each of these awards.<br />

Please note that you must be a FAHA to be eligible for these awards.<br />

Applications for the abstract-based awards will occur during the<br />

abstract submission process, May 23 – August 14, <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

FAHA Application Submission and Deadlines<br />

The Stroke Council considers applications for AHA Fellowship during<br />

the spring and fall of each year. Applications must be received through<br />

the Council Awards Application System by 5:00 pm Central Time on<br />

December 1 for the spring review cycle and by 5:00 pm Central Time<br />

on June 1 for the fall review cycle. Applications received after the<br />

deadline dates will be held until the next review cycle. New FAHA are<br />

notified after they are elected at the annual business meeting.
