Symposium Description<br />

The State-of-the-Art Stroke Nursing Symposium is a forum designed to<br />

provide current information for nursing and other healthcare professionals<br />

who treat patients and families in all phases of stroke treatment from the<br />

emergency department through rehabilitation. The symposium will update<br />

and inform the audience about nursing issues along the continuum of<br />

stroke care (ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke management, rehabilitation<br />

and program development.) The goal of the program is to share innovative<br />

best clinical practices that have been developed to optimize patient<br />

outcomes throughout the stroke continuum of care. A plenary program<br />

and break-out sessions are planned to meet educational needs for nurses<br />

and healthcare professionals at various levels of skill.<br />

Nursing Symposium <strong>2012</strong> Learning Objectives<br />

1. Explain how to meet the growing needs of a community comprehensive<br />

stroke center<br />

2. Assess a successful outpatient follow-up initiative<br />

3. Restate a long-term survivor’s experience of integration back into life<br />

4. Define advanced stroke concepts including:<br />

a. Clinical decision and stroke management utilizing imaging<br />

b. Nursing treatment and management through case study<br />

c. In-hospital stroke<br />

5. Articulate the essentials of standard clinical practice and stroke center<br />

development including:<br />

a. Developing a stroke system of care in rural Illinois<br />

b. Stroke nurse navigation<br />

c. Improving patient care through standardization and evidencebased<br />

medicine<br />

6. Explain stroke rehabilitation and recovery including:<br />

a. DSC stroke certification<br />

b. Stroke rehab certification<br />

7. Apply professional development including:<br />

a. Navigating the AHA<br />

b. Submission of an abstract<br />

c. Pursuing the latest science<br />

d. Sharing science (acute care)<br />

8. Describe dysphagia including:<br />

a. Defining issues in dysphagia<br />

b. Reviewing the current science of dysphagia screening<br />

Continuing Education Accreditation – Nurses<br />

The <strong>American</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Association</strong> is accredited as a provider of continuing<br />

nursing education by the <strong>American</strong> Nurses Credentialing Center’s<br />

Commission on Accreditation. The maximum number of hours awarded<br />

for this CE activity is 6.00 contact hours.<br />
