Program Overview<br />

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in<br />

<strong>Visual</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> provides a critical bridge between<br />

talent and skill. This exciting curriculum<br />

provides the rigorous studio practice and<br />

conceptual/art-historical framework<br />

necessary to develop a portfolio <strong>of</strong> work for<br />

application to graduate programs in fine art.<br />

Our program <strong>of</strong>fers a solid, <strong>Berkeley</strong>-quality<br />

education in the visual arts that can be completed<br />

on a part-time or full-time basis.<br />

Program Structure and Requirement s<br />

The curriculum consists <strong>of</strong> 24 semester units, including required visual art theory/critique seminars<br />

(6 units) designed to develop creative and conceptual thinking, visual art history/theory courses<br />

(6 units) that function to integrate issues <strong>of</strong> contemporary art within a historical context, and visual<br />

arts electives (12 units) chosen from a wide array <strong>of</strong> studio courses in painting, drawing, printmaking,<br />

sculpture, photography, and film/video media. The range <strong>of</strong> electives available <strong>of</strong>fers the opportunity<br />

to focus on a specific concentration or span disciplines, and to develop the technical and perceptual<br />

skills needed to grow artistically and create an independent body <strong>of</strong> work.<br />

explore the dynamics <strong>of</strong> aesthetic expression, perception, and<br />

process through an interdisciplinary study. Learn the essential<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> visual design and composition, narrative, and conceptual<br />

intent that inform and enrich your artistic practice. course topics<br />

investigate form and content issues, problem-solving methods, and<br />

strategies for developing a cohesive body <strong>of</strong> work.<br />

Modern Art: History and Theory X441<br />

the european and American modernist revolution that began in the<br />

late 19th century and continued into the 20th subverted traditional<br />

art and laid the groundwork for contemporary art. through illustrated<br />

lectures and class discussions you examine important artworks from<br />

the romantic period through the pop art era. You also explore the<br />

cultural conditions that produced these works—including the lives<br />

<strong>of</strong> the artists—and investigate the critical and theoretical writing that<br />

shaped the aesthetic discourse and subsequent art history.<br />

engage in a critical dialogue regarding issues <strong>of</strong> meaning and<br />

content, as well as technical and formal resolution, in your body <strong>of</strong><br />

work. You present original art to the instructor and your peers for<br />

review and receive in-depth feedback and guidance on the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> your portfolio. You also explore relevant topics in visual art<br />

and culture through weekly discussions, providing you with an<br />

contemporary art’s succession <strong>of</strong> contending and <strong>of</strong>ten conflicting ideas and styles challenges those who<br />

view art as a mode <strong>of</strong> self-expression that nevertheless manages to be generally accessible. examine the<br />

radical vision that drove disparate contemporary movements such as pop, minimalism, and conceptualism.<br />

explore how forms such as performance, body, and land art expanded the concept <strong>of</strong> what it means to<br />

create fine art. You ultimately gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> the impulses, interests, and innovations that have<br />

driven the art world from the middle <strong>of</strong> the 20th century to today.<br />

Students completing the Post-Baccalaureate certificate in <strong>Visual</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> are expected to have produced<br />

a cohesive body <strong>of</strong> work and be capable <strong>of</strong> discussing their art in formal philosophical and historical<br />

terms. the review is conducted by program faculty to determine your readiness for graduate study<br />

and provide feedback on your portfolio. Students must successfully pass the <strong>Visual</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> Portfolio<br />

review to complete the program and receive a certificate.<br />

Instructors<br />

Tom Andrae, Ph.d., has taught at Uc <strong>Berkeley</strong><br />

and San Francisco State <strong>University</strong>. He is the<br />

c<strong>of</strong>ounder <strong>of</strong> Discourse: Journal for Theoretical<br />

Studies in Media and Culture and the author <strong>of</strong><br />

numerous books and articles in sociology and<br />

cultural studies.<br />

Dominic Angerame, m.F.A., director <strong>of</strong><br />

canyon cinema, is an independent filmmaker<br />

whose more than 20 films have won awards at<br />

the San Francisco international, chicago international,<br />

and cork film festivals. He has been<br />

honored with a retrospective at the museum <strong>of</strong><br />

modern Art in new York.<br />

Marisa Aragona, m.F.A., has had her work<br />

exhibited in new York, San Francisco, Washington,<br />

d.c., and Seattle at venues such as<br />

new Langton <strong>Arts</strong>, Pond Gallery, Photographic<br />

center northwest, and the diego rivera Gallery.<br />

Sarah Barsness, m.F.A., has taught at the<br />

San Francisco Art institute, diablo Valley college,<br />

and the Academy <strong>of</strong> Art <strong>University</strong>. She<br />

exhibits her installations, sculptures, prints, and<br />

drawings in the Bay Area and nationally.<br />

Amy Berk, m.F.A., is an artist, writer, and<br />

educator. She is coeditor and c<strong>of</strong>ounder <strong>of</strong> the<br />

art and culture Web journal Stretcher; runs the<br />

meridian interns Program, an innovative art<br />

education program for at-risk youth; and has<br />

exhibited nationally and internationally.<br />

Suzanne Biaggi, m.A., is a site-specific<br />

sculptor who has taught at San Francisco State<br />

<strong>University</strong> and the college <strong>of</strong> marin. Her work<br />

has been exhibited at the oakland Art museum<br />

and Southern exposure Gallery.<br />

Eva Bovenzi, m.F.A., has taught at Uc<br />

<strong>Berkeley</strong>, the San Francisco Art institute, california<br />

college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong>, and San Francisco<br />

State <strong>University</strong>. She has exhibited nationally<br />

and internationally and is represented in San<br />

Francisco by the toomey-tourell Gallery.<br />

Donald Bradford, m.F.A., has taught drawing<br />

and painting at Uc Santa Barbara and at the<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Art <strong>University</strong>. He has exhibited<br />

throughout the Bay Area and nationally, including<br />

a solo exhibit at Laguna Beach Art museum.<br />

David L. Brown, m.A., has produced, written,<br />

and directed documentaries since 1971<br />

and taught video and filmmaking since 1986.<br />

His eight broadcast documentaries include<br />

Surfing for Life, Seniors for Peace, Bound by<br />

the Wind, and A Question <strong>of</strong> Power.<br />

Julie Charles, m.A., associate curator <strong>of</strong><br />

education at the San Francisco museum <strong>of</strong><br />

modern Art, has lectured and taught art history<br />

at SFmomA; the Fine <strong>Arts</strong> museums <strong>of</strong><br />

San Francisco; the American <strong>University</strong>,<br />

Washington, d.c.; and the Academy <strong>of</strong> Art<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

DeWitt Cheng, m.F.A., is an artist, art writer,<br />

and curator who has written for Artweek,<br />

ARTnews, art ltd., Coagula, Contemporary<br />

Impressions, and The <strong>California</strong> Printmaker.<br />

Ireneusz (Irek) Ciesiolkiewicz, m.Arch.,<br />

is an artist and freelance designer. He has<br />

lectured on drawing, painting, and design at<br />

universities in europe and the United States<br />

since 1988. He has exhibited his work in the<br />

Bay Area, mexico, and england, and received<br />

several national and international awards.<br />

Terri Cohn, m.A., is a writer, curator, and<br />

art historian. She is a contributing editor to<br />

Artweek and has taught at San Francisco<br />

State <strong>University</strong>, Santa clara <strong>University</strong>,<br />

San Francisco Art institute, and california<br />

college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong>.<br />

Beth Dungan, Ph.d., has taught modern<br />

and contemporary art history at Uc <strong>Berkeley</strong>,<br />

Stanford <strong>University</strong>, mills college, and california<br />

college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong>.<br />

Christian Fagerlund, m.F.A., has taught<br />

painting and drawing at the UFt teacher center<br />

in new York. His work has been included in<br />

exhibitions in new York, california, and the<br />

French West indies. He is represented by 5+5<br />

Gallery in new York.<br />

Santiago Gervasi, m.F.A., has taught at<br />

california State <strong>University</strong>, east Bay and the<br />

richmond Art center. His work is represented<br />

by cervini Hass Gallery in Scottsdale, Ariz., and<br />

Sheila Ghidini, m.F.A., has taught at california<br />

college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong>, San Francisco State<br />

<strong>University</strong>, and Uc <strong>Berkeley</strong>. She has exhibited<br />

her work throughout the United States and<br />

produced a public art commission for the city<br />

<strong>of</strong> emeryville.<br />

Glenn Hirsch, m.F.A., has taught at the San<br />

Francisco Art institute community education<br />

Program and John F. Kennedy <strong>University</strong>. He<br />

has exhibited in the United States and mexico,<br />

with reviews appearing in the Los Angeles<br />

Times and Artweek.<br />

Cynthia Ona Innis, m.F.A., has taught at<br />

Uc <strong>Berkeley</strong>, the San Francisco Art institute,<br />

San Francisco State <strong>University</strong>, and Boise State<br />

<strong>University</strong>. Her work is included in the permanent<br />

collections <strong>of</strong> the San Jose museum <strong>of</strong><br />

Art and the <strong>Berkeley</strong> Art museum, and is represented<br />

locally by the Braunstein/Quay Gallery.<br />

Debra Koppman, Ph.d., has taught<br />

contemporary art history and theory at<br />

John F. Kennedy <strong>University</strong>. She is an editor<br />

for Artweek and author <strong>of</strong> Reclaiming the<br />

Spiritual in Art: Contemporary Cross Cultural<br />

Perspectives, and has exhibited her work<br />

nationally and internationally.<br />

Pamela Lanza, m.F.A., has taught at new<br />

mexico State <strong>University</strong> in Las cruces, the San<br />

Francisco School <strong>of</strong> Art, ASUc <strong>Berkeley</strong> Art<br />

Studio, and San Francisco Art institute extension.<br />

Her work has been exhibited in galleries<br />

and universities nationwide.<br />

Sean McFarland, m.F.A., has taught photography<br />

at california college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong> and is<br />

the recipient <strong>of</strong> a Phelan Art Award in Photography.<br />

His work has been exhibited nationally<br />

and internationally.<br />

David Papas is a commercial and fine art<br />

photographer with a client list that includes HP,<br />

Ford motor company, and t-mobile.<br />

Larry Robinson, m.F.A., has taught painting,<br />

drawing, and color theory in the Bay Area<br />

since 1979. He is owner and director <strong>of</strong> oakdale<br />

Painting Studio in San Francisco. His work<br />

has been exhibited at the Phoenix museum <strong>of</strong><br />

Art and throughout the Bay Area, including the<br />

dana reich Gallery in San Francisco and the<br />

claudia chapline Gallery in Stinson Beach.<br />

Josine Smits, Ph.d., has taught at california<br />

college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong> and Stanford <strong>University</strong>.<br />

She received a master’s degree from the<br />

Sorbonne and a Ph.d. from Stanford for a dissertation<br />

on the landscapes <strong>of</strong> corot. She also<br />

studied the influence <strong>of</strong> Japanese art on the<br />

impressionists, at tokyo <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Michael Starkman, m.F.A., has been assistant<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> art at Southeastern Louisiana<br />

<strong>University</strong> and edinboro <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania.<br />

His work is held in public and private<br />

collections including the Georgia museum, the<br />

Kennedy museum <strong>of</strong> Art, the Harry ransom<br />

Humanities research center, and the Hollar<br />

Gallery in Prague.<br />

Heather Wilcoxon, m.F.A., has taught at<br />

the San Francisco Art institute and california<br />

college <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong>. She exhibits nationally and<br />

is the recipient <strong>of</strong> awards by the Pollock-drasner<br />

Fellowship and marin <strong>Arts</strong> council, and a<br />

djerassi Artist-in-residence Fellowship.<br />

Jan Wurm, m.A., has taught and lectured at<br />

art institutions throughout california, and has<br />

exhibited her drawings and paintings nationally<br />

and internationally, including Los Angeles<br />

municipal Art Gallery; Southern exposure<br />

Gallery, San Francisco; and the royal college<br />

<strong>of</strong> Art, London.<br />

How to Apply<br />

To apply for program candidacy, please complete<br />

and submit an application form online at<br />

www.unex.berkeley.edu/cert/visualarts.html or print<br />

out and complete the application form available at<br />

www.unex.berkeley.edu/info/cert.php. Mail or fax it<br />

as the form indicates and include the application fee.<br />

Applications cannot be taken by phone.<br />

Completing t he Cer tificate<br />

you are expected to complete the course requirements<br />

for the certificate within five years <strong>of</strong> taking<br />

the first course. notify us in writing when you have<br />

received the final grade report for your last course.<br />

After verifying successful completion <strong>of</strong> all coursework<br />

and requirements, extension awards your<br />

certificate.<br />

Grading Policy<br />

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. A grade<br />

point average <strong>of</strong> 2.0 is required in order to earn the<br />

certificate, and each course must be completed with<br />

a grade <strong>of</strong> c or better.


Substitution <strong>of</strong> Courses<br />

students may substitute up to eight<br />

semester units in the curriculum. A<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> 16 <strong>of</strong> the required 24 units<br />

must be completed at Uc berkeley<br />

extension. Any substitution must be<br />

approved in writing by Uc berkeley<br />

extension. substitution requests must<br />

be submitted with <strong>of</strong>ficial academic<br />

transcripts and course descriptions from<br />

an accredited university or college. To be<br />

eligible for transfer, the course(s) must<br />

have been completed within the past 10<br />

years with a grade <strong>of</strong> b or better, be <strong>of</strong> an<br />

equivalent unit value, and substantially<br />

resemble in content the course that is<br />

being substituted.<br />

courses may also be waived based on<br />

a portfolio review, but students must<br />

complete an additional elective course<br />

<strong>of</strong> equivalent value in lieu <strong>of</strong> each course<br />

waived, in order that the total units required<br />

for the certificate program are met.<br />

to the substitution requirements may<br />

visual <strong>Arts</strong> program is housed in Uc<br />

berkeley extension’s south <strong>of</strong> Market<br />

(soMA) center in san francisco, 95 Third<br />

street, located near the san francisco<br />

Museum <strong>of</strong> Modern Art; MoAD, the Museum<br />

<strong>of</strong> the African Diaspora; and the center for<br />

the <strong>Arts</strong> at yerba buena gardens.<br />

The soMA center includes studio and<br />

lecture classrooms, an Art and Design<br />

library, and gallery/exhibition spaces.<br />
