Performance associated with Grade B, representing high achievement.
Work sample summary
Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or
semester based on the rank order of
students. Grades should not be allocated
to individual assessments.
Assessment type: Theory and composition
This is an example of a Western Art theory task completed under test conditions. Students were required to
complete questions based on the recognition and writing of key signatures, intervals, triads, chords and scales. In
addition, there were three transposition questions to complete, two of which were instrument based questions.
In this work sample most questions were answered competently demonstrating a mostly accurate application of
music theory skills, but there were some inconsistencies evident. There were several errors across questions
involving the use of accidentals and key signatures, particularly when writing minor scales and two of the
transposition questions were incorrectly written.
Stage 1
Grades are allocated at the end of a unit or
semester based on the rank order of
students. Grades should not be allocated
to individual assessments.
The student has
provided the correct
notes and key
signature, but the
melody is written at the
wrong octave, needing
to be an octave higher
than indicated.
The student has
confused the direction
the melody is to be
transposed, writing it
up a Major 2nd instead
of transposing it down
a Major 2nd into
concert or sounding
pitch.
Correctly transposes
the example up a Major
6th, providing the
correct key signature.
Correctly identifies all
major and minor key
signatures.
Identifies two triads
incorrectly, omitting the
Cb in the Ab minor
triad and the double B
flat in the final triad.
Correctly identifies all
but one interval.
Stage 1
Provides the correct
notes and accidentals
for all intervals.
Writes only two chords
correctly, providing
incorrect or no
accidentals, indicating
inconsistent knowledge
of key signatures and
chord structure.
Provides the correct
notes and key
signature, but omits the
raised 7ths and
consequently
incorrectly identifies the
semitones.
