Its sounding-rocket activity enabled ESRO <strong>to</strong> demonstrate the European capability <strong>to</strong> put space science <strong>and</strong><br />

applications experiments in<strong>to</strong> space <strong>and</strong> get results back on the ground.<br />

<strong>The</strong> European companies <strong>and</strong>/or their successors such as BAe, SNIAS/Sud Aviation/Aerospatiale, Dornier/<br />

EADS, CASA, Air Italia/Alenia, Saab, etc., which were involved in early sounding-rocket payload <strong>and</strong><br />

rocket-subsystem development <strong>and</strong> integration activities, are still major European space players <strong>to</strong>day. <strong>The</strong><br />

same is the case for the prominent space-science institutes (see Table 5.6 below), key scientists <strong>and</strong> their<br />

successors.<br />

5.1 Some ESRO sounding-rocket programme statistics (1964-72)<br />

<strong>The</strong> fi rst two sounding-rocket payloads for an ESRO programme were selected in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1963 <strong>and</strong> were<br />

provided by the following labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

- Institute d’Astrophysique de Liège (Dr. Rosen)<br />

- Max Planck Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik, Munich-Garching (Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lüst).<br />

<strong>The</strong> two experiments had the objective <strong>of</strong> releasing substances such as ammonia <strong>and</strong> barium in<strong>to</strong> the ionosphere<br />

<strong>and</strong> studying pho<strong>to</strong>-decomposition, diffusion characteristics <strong>and</strong> wind velocities in the ionosphere<br />

from the ground. <strong>The</strong> fi rst launch campaign <strong>to</strong>ok place in late June/early July 1964 from the Italian military<br />

Sal<strong>to</strong> di Quirra rocket range in Sardinia, where an existing launch <strong>to</strong>wer had been modifi ed <strong>to</strong> accommodate<br />

Skylark rockets using Cuckoo boosters.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second ESRO launch campaign <strong>to</strong>ok place in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1964 from the French rocket-launching base on<br />

Ile de Levant in the south <strong>of</strong> France, using a Centaure rocket, which for the fi rst time in Europe carried a<br />

telemetry system.<br />

Under the ESRO programme, 184 sounding rockets were launched in the period 1964-72. <strong>The</strong> ESRO programme<br />

employed eight different types <strong>of</strong> rockets, with the British Skylark <strong>and</strong> French Centaure rockets<br />

being the most frequently used (see Table 5-1):<br />
