CoAmiy: TITLoE MAURITANIA NEW ACTIVITY regetable Production WMfElI682-0204 Sahel Development Program Goal: To promote the Aevelopment and welfare of the rura'l population in Mauritania by increasing small farmer food productivity and nutrition levels, and by contributing to family food security. Purpose: Develop Improved vegetable production, aeed preservation and vegetable food preparation techniques among sedentary inhabitants of the third, fifth, and sixth regions in Mauritania, and generate the data required to launch an expanded program in vegetable production. Background: Historically, vegetables have occupied a relatively unimportant place in the Hauritanian diet, the population has depended and cereals heavily as on their meat, staple milk foods. products In 1974, the Goverment of Mauritania, with A.I.D. and World Bank assistance,launched a vegetable production project In several regions of the country as one of the measures taken to help the population recover from the drought. Results were encouraging in terms of the quantity of vegetables produced of and legumes general in acceptance the diet. The project showed, however, further that actions had to be taken before vegetable production would become a self-sustaining activity for farmers.
