Letter from the President 

Dear Alumnae and Friends, 

Rosati-Kain High School has a blessed history, and 2008-2009 was no 

exception. In this annual report you will read of success and celebration. You will also be 

reminded that our school is touched by loss. The successes of the class of 2009 reflect their 

lifetime of learning, growing and maturing. Four years of that lifetime has been spent at R-K 

and shared with the classes that preceded them and those that will follow. We are very proud of 

them and pray that they will continue to grow in wisdom, age, and grace as they bring their own 

experience of Jesus Christ to the world they meet. 

2008-2009 saw the implementation of the president/principal model of school leadership at 

Rosati-Kain. Judy Peteraf Mohan, R-K class of 1975, returned to Rosati-Kain to assume the 

academic leadership of our school. Mrs. Mohan came to R-K after a long and successful career 

as an English teacher in an all-girl high school. Her classroom experience, faculty leadership 

and recent academic preparation in St. Louis University’s Catholic School Leadership Program 

were all utilized as she ably navigated through her freshman year as a high school Principal. 

Rosati’s students and academic program are in capable, compassionate, and courageous care. 

The Rosati-Kain High School centennial, which we will celebrate in 2011-2012, seems to 

be right around the corner will bring special blessings and opportunities. The many alumnae, 

friends, advocates and benefactors of R-K will be called upon to celebrate our history 

and enhance our future so that the mission of Catholic education, lived out uniquely at 

Rosati-Kain, will thrive for generations to come. 

Thank you for your loyal support of Rosati-Kain through your prayers, your moral support, 

and your treasure. May God continue to bless this holy endeavor for many years to come.

The 2008-2009 school year brought both blessings and challenges to Rosati-Kain High 

School. As a community, we had the opportunity to live our mission in times of happiness and 

thanksgiving, and in times of loss. From the unexpected death of a teacher, to welcoming a new 

archbishop and making preparations for the 100th Anniversary, R-K’s students, staff, alumnae and 

administrators experienced a year of transition and hope. 

In December, a few days before Christmas, R-K lost a teacher and supporter when Mrs. Marsha 

Korte passed away suddenly. At a memorial service in January, Sr. Joan told the students, staff, and 

former faculty that had gathered that “Right now, it feels like things will never return to normal. 

But they will – it will just be a new normal.” In memory of Mrs. Korte’s 31 years of service to R-K, 

her former classroom has been named in her honor and a scholarship has been established in her 

name. While her death was a great loss for Rosati-Kain, her legacy of service and dedication to our 

community will always be remembered with gratitude. 

Rosati-Kain made numerous improvements to the campus and communication structure this year, 

including a full website redesign and installing a Giving Garden at the Lindell Blvd. entrance. Our 

web site, www.rosati-kain.org underwent a full evaluation and redesign in the spring semester, and 

now features an interactive calendar, an expanded alumnae section and our current recruitment 

video. After summer break began, a Giving Garden was added to the landscaping at the front of the 

building, featuring engraved paving bricks and a granite center stone with the Rosati-Kain High 

School crest. Individual bricks are inscribed with the names of members of the Caritas Society, 

those who have chosen to remember R-K in their wills and estate planning. 

Early in March the R-K Alumnae Association met to celebrate a happy occasion: the 95th birthday 

of Mrs. Ann Meyer, a long time member of the Alumnae Board and benefactor of Rosati-Kain 

High School. Ann graduated in 1932, and has worked in various positions with the Alumnae 

Association, including as manager of the Association’s scholarships. Ann’s dedication to the school 

is an inspiration to her fellow alumnae, and continues to serve as an example of R-K’s lifelong 

impact on its students. To continue honoring Ann Meyer’s work at Rosati-Kain, room 9 (the 

“Alumnae Room”) has been named in her honor. 

On a chilly April morning, it was announced that the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson would 

become the Archbishop of St. Louis – and that R-K was his first visit! Around 9:00 a.m. he arrived 

at school to address the students and staff at an assembly and prayer service. “I know that each of 

you has many gifts, and I look forward to being your Archbishop for many years,” Carlson said. 

“Hopefully we can share those gifts and talents together, moving forward in the body of Christ as 

we make sure that Rosati-Kain is around for a long, long time.” In June, R-K hosted several events 

connected to the installation, including a luncheon for bishops and two receptions. 

As Rosati-Kain looks forward to the 100th Anniversary celebration in 2011-2012, we remain 

committed to our mission of educating young women by supporting them in their faith and 

challenging them in the classroom. Your support of the R-K annual fund is an investment in 

the entire R-K community, which is today a diverse group of students, staff, former faculty and 

alumnae that are living and working throughout the world

The Rosati-Kain Centennial School Song 

In August of 2008, music teacher Luanne Murphy and English teacher Laura 

Govero-Yann (‘69) worked together to write a new R-K school song in preparation 

for the Centennial Celebration in 2011-2012. R-K has had several versions of the 

school song over the years, and the most recent one draws on ideas and themes from 

the Rosati-Kain prayer. A version of the new song, as sung by R-K students at the 

Spring Concert can be found on our website at www.rosati-kain.org.

Tuition Assistance at Rosati-Kain High School 

At R-K, the tuition charged was $7,150 in 2008-2009, which is well below the actual cost 

of educating an individual student. In spite of our low tuition rate, some families still have 

difficulty making complete payments. To help support these families, Rosati-Kain offers several 

tuition assistance options. This year, our program was supported by several special gifts. 

In the 2008-2009 school year, the Vassia Family Charitable Foundation awarded Rosati-Kain 

High School $30,000 grant to be used for tuition assistance. Thanks to the grant, R-K was able 

to assist eighteen families with immediate tuition assistance needs. The Vassia Family Charitable 

Foundation was founded at the bequest of Mary and Lucille Vassia, sisters and lifetime residents 

of St. Louis. The foundation assists young people living in St. Louis City, particularly those in 

the Cathedral Basilica area of the Central West End. 

Special thanks also go to the Coughlin family for their gift in honor of their mother, Laura Byrne 

Coughlin, class of 1946. Their tuition assistance gift continues to grant assistance to several of 

our current families, and honors Laura’s lifelong commitment to Rosati-Kain High School. 

Another generous friend of Rosati-Kain contributed $15,000 after being inspired by the parent 

of an alumna, and many donors to our Annual Fund designated their gift to go toward our 

tuition assistance program. 

Whether tuition at R-K was $60, $160 or $6,000, R-K alumnae remember their own 

experience as a student. As they recall the sacrifices made by parents and grandparents 

throughout the history of the school, their contributions pay the gift forward to future 

generations of R-K women.
