Hunter-Reay’s “Never Give Up” Mentality 

The searing, edge-of-your-seat, teeth-rattling 500-mile season finale was a microcosm of Ryan Hunter- 

Reay’s 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season. 

Nothing risked; nothing gained. 

“Really, it’s a lot like my career,” Hunter-Reay adds two hours after snuggling up to the Astor Cup by 

earning his first series title in most astonishing fashion. 

Hunter-Reay – albeit in the throes of surprise championship celebration syndrome – is reflective as the 

final TV lights of his long day are turned off. More interviews, more blinding lights are forthcoming in 

New York during the Champion’s Tour, including a guest spot on “The Late Show with David 

Letterman” on Sept. 20. 

Hunter-Reay, 31, extols that “never give up” message through his active support of Racing For Cancer 

and LIVESTRONG, which he adopted as his credo when finding an avenue back into Indy car racing 

after the 2005 Champ Car season. 

“Never give up is a big part of what I believe in in so many ways, and definitely fits the cancer side of it,” 

said Hunter-Reay, whose mother, Lydia, died of colon cancer in November 2009. “This year, we had to 

come back numerous times. We had some unlucky breaks early in the season. To bounce back from being 

seventh in the points to leading the championship, losing that lead and then gaining it back is massive.” 

Hunter-Reay, who signed a two-year contract extension with Andretti Autosport on Sept. 14, wrapped up 

the series title by three points with a fourth-place finish in the MAVTV 500 INDYCAR World 

Championships at Auto Club Speedway after Team Penske’s Will Power crashed on Lap 55 of the 250lap 

test of stamina and will. 

It was the seventh consecutive year that the championship was decided in the season finale, and the 

margin was the closest since 2006 (when Sam Hornish Jr. won on a tiebreaker). 

“I always believed that if I got the right opportunity and worked hard enough that I could be in this 

position or I could be in the position to win races,” Hunter-Reay said. “But then you go from winning 

races to competing for a championship, and that comes with another level of consistency. 

“That comes from the continuity and a team that believes in you, and a group like we have in the (No.) 28 

car where things are working. You build on that year after year. That's why we're in this position now. 

So just never give up. It's really nice to have this now to make that all come to fruition.” 

In 2006, it didn’t appear likely that the Floridian would be wearing a red champion’s cap. Contemplating 

his future following losing his third ride in three years, “I definitely grazed the bottom, I think.”

He raced sports cars and was a test driver for the Hendrick’s stock car program – anything to keep his 

name at the forefront of prospective employers. That call came from Bobby Rahal in July 2007, and 

Hunter-Reay’s return to Indy car racing came at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course a few weeks later. 

Despite running a limited schedule for then-Rahal Letterman Racing, Hunter-Reay received the Rookie of 

the Year award (four top-10 finishes in six races). In ’08, he finished sixth in his first Indianapolis 500 

and won at Watkins Glen International. 

“I kept at it, made sure I was at the racetrack putting a good face on and telling everybody that would 

listen that I'm ready to go if you want to drop me in the seat,” he said. “I talked to Bobby Rahal early in 

'06 and early in '07 and told him if you ever need somebody last minute to jump in and go, go, go, I'm 

there for you. 

“And I got the call middle of the way through the '07 season, and I really credit Bobby for that. He 

brought me back into Indy car racing.” 

Added Rahal: “Ninety percent of being successful in racing is having the fortitude, commitment and drive 

to keep going, no matter what.” 

But just when momentum appeared to be on his side, sponsorship evaporated with the Rahal team. Tony 

George’s Vision Racing team offered Hunter-Reay a six-race lifeline to start the 2009 season, and he then 

moved to A.J. Foyt Racing to fill out the season after Vitor Meira suffered fractured vertebrae in the Indy 

500. After the October finale, Hunter-Reay again was looking for a long-term commitment. 

Andretti Autosport offered Hunter-Reay one of its cars alongside Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick. A 

victory on the streets of Long Beach spurred full-season sponsorship from IZOD, and he’s been a 

versatile performer in the intervening events. 

Now he’s also the champion – the first American Indy car title-holder since Hornish. 

“This is just amazing,” he said as the TV crew packs up. “This is what racing is about, what sports are 

about. I've always looked up to the American drivers when I first started this whole deal as a fan of the 

IndyCar Series. Before I raced go-karts I followed the American greats. That really appealed to me. 

“Now here I am on the other side, and I see these kids that are looking up to us drivers. It's so cool being 

on the other side of it all. I feel like I'm up against the best in the world. It's just amazing to get it done.” 

Hunter-Reay will make his 50th Indy car start with Andretti Autosport in the 2013 season opener and an 

immediate goal is an Indianapolis 500 triumph. 

“Indy is the big one for sure,” he says. “A championship is big, but Indianapolis is massive. That’s what 

we’re gunning for and hopefully we’ll be fighting right up there on the front row like this year and win 

it.”

What They Said About The 

2012 IZOD IndyCar Series Championship 

Ryan Hunter-Reay opened the IndyCar season determined to take his career to another level. 

He had a chance to race for the season-opening win at St. Pete, where a victory would have given him a 

nice little bump to start things. But when fuel became an issue, and his crew implored him to save gas 

over the closing laps, he backed off and settled for a third-place finish. 

It's not easy to ask a driver, especially one who opened the season with all of three IndyCar victories, not 

to chase the checkered flag. Hunter-Reay willingly did it, though, because he'd changed his thinking and 

made the big picture - collecting every point possible - his focus. 

It paid off Saturday night when Hunter-Reay capped a career year with his first championship at a major 

racing level. In finishing fourth, he beat Will Power by three points for the IndyCar title, the first for an 

American since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

But attention was firmly riveted on the battle between Power and Hunter-Reay, which was the seventh 

consecutive IndyCar Series championship clash to go absolutely down to the wire. 

No other racing series consistently delivers the same kind of drama, and does it without the benefit of an 

artificial playoff system. 

"You can't beat Indy car racing," said victorious team owner Michael Andretti. "I'm telling you, it's the 

best in the world." 

And now it has a new American champion -- the first since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006, and the first in a 

unified Indy car series since Al Unser Jr. way back in 1994. 

Not many put Hunter-Reay on their short list of championship contenders at the start of the season. But 

by earning a series-high four race wins with a series of gritty performances, the 31-year-old Floridian 

genuinely established himself as a top Indy car driver.

The reality of Ryan Hunter-Reay's championship can be measured by blinks of an eye. One less blink, 

and he would have been hit by Will Power's spinning car. 

As it turned out, he got an extra blink, missed Power's car by inches and survived 194 more laps of 

searing drama Saturday to win the Izod IndyCar Series championship by finishing fourth in the MAVTV 

500 at Auto Club Speedway.

Of all the things he's been called over the past 31 years, hearing his name followed by "IZOD IndyCar 

Series Champion" for the first time registered with a mix of surreal and sublime for the American. 

After almost a decade of digging and clawing to get to where he stood posing with the Astor Cup 

Saturday night in Fontana, the southern California boy sat at the podium and shared his emotions with the 

assembled press. 

"I can't put it into words the feeling," he said. "How hard I had to fight. How we had to fight tonight. How 

we had to fight at Baltimore. Just this whole thing has not set in yet. I'm still in almost fight mode. We 

just came back. We really earned this one."

What we saw Saturday night was Indy car racing at its jaw-dropping best – a wild west show with 30 lead 

changes, non-stop passing, one game-changing accident, a spirited charge to the title, an impressive 

victory for a little guy and the kind of drama that can’t be scripted. 

If you didn’t like the MAVTV 500, then you probably need to find another sport to watch. 

It was Ryan Hunter-Reay delivering under the kind of pressure that defines a champion and it was Will 

Power gutted by another mistake and denied No. 1 for a third straight year.

On this night, in the series finale, there was a nerve-wracking finish after points leader Will Power of 

Australia crushed his car on the wall early in the race, leaving the championship to American Ryan 

Hunter-Reay – if he could only finish in fifth place. 

Fifth, you say? How about fourth for Hunter-Reay, while fellow American Ed Carpenter took the 

checkered flag. 

All in all, an exciting show, and never mind big crowd-little crowd dynamic. It would be a simple shame 

if the IndyCar Series doesn’t find its way back here, sooner rather than later.

Say what you will about the troubled state of IndyCar racing — and there's no shortage of problems to 

discuss — but the series still can put on a compelling show. 

That was evident on a hot Saturday night at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, where the IZOD IndyCar 

Series returned for the first time in seven years. 

The MAVTV 500 was the series' season finale, with drivers Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay locked in 

a close championship battle. 

So there was a race within the race, with 26 drivers trying not only to win the event but Power and 

Hunter-Reay trying to finish high enough to capture the title. 

Hunter-Reay, 17 points behind Power when the green flag fell, prevailed after Power suffered a stunning 

setback by crashing early. 

But even with Power's accident, it wasn't known until the last lap of the 250-lap race whether Hunter- 

Reay would gain enough points to overtake Power for the title. 

The result was a tense, thrilling race that saw Hunter-Reay — who needed to finish fifth to become 

champion — hang on to finish fourth and capture his first title by only three points over Power.

To anyone who has followed the last couple of IndyCar seasons, half of the story is familiar: it's the final 

race, and Will Power is in a position to win his first championship. 

The twist is that in the past, it has been the red Target colours and saltire-emblazoned helmet of Dario 

Franchitti that has loomed large in the Australian's thoughts during the long nights leading up to the 

finale. The Scot is out of the equation this time, and instead it's the bright yellow car of Andretti's Ryan 

Hunter-Reay that will be working to deny Power his glory once again. 

One way or another, a first-time champion will be crowned at Fontana on Saturday evening.

Ryan Hunter-Reay now has an IndyCar championship before any of the Team Penske drivers. The former 

vagabond who was always the American earmarked with so much potential is now in rarified air. 

Put simply, the last two races for him and the Andretti Autosport team have been the definition of clutch. 

Backs up against the wall after Sonoma, RHR and crew adopted a “nothing to lose, we're not out of it” 

attitude and thrived. Team principal Michael Andretti made the inspired call to stay on slicks at 

Baltimore, netting RHR the key track position, and his second-to-last restart jumping Ryan Briscoe was a 

well-timed move. 

In Fontana, despite fighting an ill-handling car throughout the week, and after already crashing in testing 

on Wednesday, the team stuck to the “never give up” mantra and with a revised race setup, hung on in the 

early stages before the track got dark. Hunter-Reay again came to life on the second-to-last restart, 

passing cars once he was in a position to secure the championship. 

Either champion would have been worthy, but Hunter-Reay's title is well deserved. Will Power's class, 

too, was as impressive as Hunter-Reay's drive. The sportsmanship he displayed in defeat was a fitting end 

to a great race.

Will Power called Ryan Hunter-Reay a deserving IndyCar champion. The words were as true as they 

were sincere. 

Hunter-Reay capped a dramatic comeback Saturday night by finishing fourth at Auto Club Speedway in 

the season's final race. It was a drive worthy of a championship. 

Hunter-Reay crashed his ill-handling car during a Friday practice, then nearly got lapped early in 

Saturday's 500-mile race by JR Hildebrand. Hunter-Reay even needed the help he got from an unlikely 

opponent to have a chance at his first series title.

A new IndyCar Champion was crowned this weekend, and the 2012 season has officially come to a 

conclusion. It was an incredible ending to a fantastic season that was filled with many changes. For the 

Championship to be decided by just three points on the final lap of a 500-mile race is something you 

would only see on a movie screen or in a book. 

For Hunter-Reay, it truly has been a roller coaster ride. After bouncing around from team to team, he has 

finally found a home at Andretti Autosport. They now have another Championship-winning driver that 

still has a fantastic future ahead of him.

2012 IZOD IndyCar Series Race Recaps 

Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg – Sunday, March 25 at Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. 

Helio Castroneves ended a winless drought of more than a year by winning the Honda Grand Prix 

of St. Petersburg for the third time on March 25. 

Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Shell V-Power/Pennzoil Ultra Team Penske Chevrolet, passed 

Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon for second place with a pass on the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 

73 and went on to score the 26th win of his Indy car career. 

Dixon finished second in his Honda-powered car, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti 

Autosport in a Chevrolet-powered car. James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe rounded out the top-five. 

It was an emotional day for Castroneves, who dedicated his win to the late Dan Wheldon. 

After taking the checkered flag, Castroneves stopped his car at Turn 10 and honored Wheldon, 

who called St. Petersburg home, by climbing the fence and patting the "Dan Wheldon Way" sign located 

there. 

Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama – Sunday, April 1 at Barber Motorsports Park 

Will Power held off Scott Dixon on a restart with 16 laps left to win the Honda Indy Grand Prix 

of Alabama for the second year in a row. 

Dixon, who was 3.3709 seconds behind in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, has the 

distinction of being the race runner-up all three years (twice to Power and in the inaugural race to Helio 

Castroneves). He broke a tie with teammate Dario Franchitti with 27 second-place finishes on the all-time 

list and is one behind Castroneves. 

Castroneves, the pole sitter, finished third to maintain the points lead in the young season and 

continue his resurgence after a disappointing 2011 season. He held off Graham Rahal in the No. 38 

Service Chip Ganassi Racing car by 0.2245 of a second. 

Simon Pagenaud finished fifth and James Hinchcliffe was sixth after starting on the front row for 

the first time in his IZOD IndyCar Series career. Mike Conway, who provided A.J. Foyt Racing its best 

non-oval starting position (fourth) since 2007, finished seventh. 

Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach – Sunday, April 15 at Streets of Long Beach, Calif. 

Will Power, who started the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in Row 6 because of a 

penalty assessed on all 11 Chevrolet-powered cars for unapproved engine changes, overcame the deficit 

by stretching 18.5 gallons of E85 the last 21 laps on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit, all the while 

being chased down by Simon Pagenaud. 

It was Team Penske's first Indy car victory at Long Beach since 2001 (Helio Castroneves), while 

Power won the Champ Car finale on the course in 2008 with KV Racing Technology. 

Pagenaud, who pitted the No. 77 Honda-powered car for the final time on Lap 70 of 85, finished 

0.8675 of a second back. Over the final three laps, he ran lap times 1.5-2 seconds quicker than Power 

(1:10.4941 to 1:12.0333 for instance on Lap 84). 

Pagenaud, who led laps for the first time since 2007 in Belgium, also gave Schmidt Hamilton HP 

Motorsports its highest finish since Jaques Lazier at Nashville in 2001 (as Sam Schmidt Motorsports). 

Seven different teams were represented in the top 10. 

James Hinchcliffe, driving the No. 27 GoDaddy.com car for Andretti Autosport, finished third as 

teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay incurred a 30-second penalty on the final lap for avoidable contact with the 

No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing car. It was his first podium finish in his IZOD IndyCar Series 

career. Sato, seeking his first IZOD IndyCar Series podium, finished eighth. Hunter-Reay checked in 

sixth. 

Tony Kanaan, who started 19th, finished a season-best fourth and JR Hildebrand was fifth -- his 

best since placing fourth at Iowa last June.

Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle – Sunday, April 29 at Streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil 

Will Power hopes a shower of April victories can lead to a quart of milk in May. 

The Team Penske driver won the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle to score his 

third consecutive victory of the season and the third in a row at the Anhembi circuit. 

Power, driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, held off Hunter-Reay on a Lap 71 restart 

and won by 0.9045 of a second. Takuma Sato, who started 25th because of an unapproved Honda engine 

change and overcame a Lap 12 pit lane speed violation penalty, earned his first IZOD IndyCar Series 

podium finish. 

Power is the first driver since Scott Dixon in 2007 to win three consecutive races (Watkins Glen, 

Nashville, Mid-Ohio). 

Power inherited the point when Dixon pitted under caution on Lap 64, held off Hunter-Reay on 

the Lap 67 restart, which quickly turned into a Turn 1 parking lot that collected, among others, Dixon. 

Recognizing possibly his final opportunity to overtake Power, Hunter-Reay moved to the outside in Turn 

1 of the Lap 71 green flag. 

Helio Castroneves overtook front-row starter Dario Franchitti on that restart to finish fourth. 

Franchitti's No. 10 Lexar Media car for Target Chip Ganassi Racing was bumped from behind on a Lap 

26 restart in Turn 1 to drop to 22nd. 

James Hinchcliffe, JR Hildebrand and Charlie Kimball -- rookies in 2011 -- finished ahead of E.J. 

Viso in ninth and Barrichello in 10th. 

96 th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race – Sunday, May 27 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway 

Reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti became the 10th driver with three or 

more Indianapolis 500 wins, holding off charges from Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott 

Dixon, Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan over the final five laps to win the 96 th Indianapolis 500. 

Franchitti won under caution as Sato's No. 15 Rahal Letterman Racing car made slight contact 

with the left side Franchitti's No. 50 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car while running side-by-side for the 

lead on the white flag lap. The contact shot Sato's car up the track and into the Turn 1 SAFER Barrier, 

bringing out the yellow flag. 

Franchitti led teammate Scott Dixon and Kanaan under the twin checkered flags to cap a wild 

race featuring the new car-engine package. There were a record 34 lead changes among 10 drivers. 

A few minutes later, in Victory Circle, Franchitti looked to the sky as a salute to Dan Wheldon. 

A few minutes afterward, he and wife Ashley Judd were joined on the victory lap by Susie 

Wheldon, who earlier in the weekend accepted the Champion of Champions ring and "Baby Borg" trophy 

on behalf of her husband. 

Kanaan, seeking his first victory in his 11th 500 Mile Race and driving the No. 11 car ("my 

favorite number") for KV Racing Technology, had taken the lead on a Lap 184 restart. 

Oriol Servia jumped from the 27th starting spot to finish fourth and pole sitter Ryan Briscoe was 

fifth. James Hinchcliffe, who started from the middle of the front row, finished sixth and Justin Wilson 

also had an Indy-best seventh-place finish. Charlie Kimball overcame a practice crash a week earlier to 

finish eighth, and Townsend Bell was ninth. Three-time winner Helio Castroneves was 10th and Rubens 

Barrichello was the highest finishing rookie in 11th.

Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix – Sunday, June 3 at Raceway at Belle Isle Park 

Scott Dixon, the pole sitter, led all 60 laps in the race shortened from 90 laps because of a twohour 

red flag for crews to repair three sections of patched asphalt and concrete on the 14-turn course. 

Dixon earned his 28th Indy car victory, passing Johnny Rutherford for 11th on the all-time list. Rick 

Mears (29) is next up. 

Dixon, who held on to finish 1.9628 seconds ahead of Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate 

Dario Franchitti, also was joined on the stage by Simon Pagenaud as Honda swept the top three in 

Chevy's home race. 

IZOD IndyCar Series points leader Will Power finished fourth and Oriol Servia advanced 12 

positions relative to his starting spot to finish fifth. Dixon supplanted Helio Castroneves and James 

Hinchcliffe in second in the championship standings, closing to 26 of Power with the Firestone 550 at 

Texas Motor Speedway on tap on June 9 (NBC Sports Network at 8 p.m. ET). 

The red flag was displayed at 4:53 p.m. (ET) -- about 68 minutes after the start of the race -- as 

IZOD IndyCar Series Race Director Beaux Barfield called the cars onto pit lane following the first fullcourse 

yellow flag of the race on Lap 40 when James Hinchcliffe's No. 27 Team GoDaddy.com car struck 

a slice of asphalt that sent him into the tire barrier in Turn 7. Almost simultaneously, the No. 15 Rahal 

Letterman Lanigan Racing car of Takuma Sato slid into the Turn 12 wall. 

Firestone 550 – Saturday, June 9 at Texas Motor Speedway 

Justin Wilson charged from 17th on the starting grid to overtake Graham Rahal's mishandling car 

on Lap 226 of 228 to win the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway. 

It was the first IZOD IndyCar Series oval victory for Wilson, who led Rahal across the startfinish 

line by 3.9202 seconds. Ryan Briscoe finished third and James Hinchcliffe was fourth. All four led 

multiple laps in the fast and furious race. 

"It's just fantastic," said Wilson, driver of the No. 18 Sonny's BBQ whose previous best IZOD 

IndyCar Series oval finish was seventh. "(Team owner) Dale (Coyne) has put so much into making us 

competitive, so this one is for him and the team. I just can't believe we managed to pull this off. The car 

was fantastic, and on the long runs, it just got better and better." 

Rahal appeared to be on his way to his first oval victory, but the No. 38 Service Central Chip 

Ganassi Racing car brushed the Turn 4 wall as he was fighting understeer. 

Milwaukee IndyFest – Saturday, June 16 at The Milwaukee Mile 

Ryan Hunter-Reay passed Helio Castroneves for the lead with 84 laps to go and held on to win 

the Milwaukee IndyFest at the famed Milwaukee Mile. 

Hunter-Reay, who started second, led Tony Kanaan across the start-finish line by 5.1029 seconds. 

James Hinchcliffe was third and Oriol Servia jumped from the 20th starting position to finish fourth. E.J. 

Viso, who led his first laps since June 2011 at Texas, finished fifth (his first top five since Iowa in 2010). 

After the race, INDYCAR officials acknowledged an error led to a drive through penalty against 

Scott Dixon, who had moved from 21st position into the top-10 before the call. 

"Due to a glitch in technology, there was a discrepancy between the official race clock and the 

clock on the replay machine," INDYCAR President of Competition and IZOD IndyCar Series race 

director Beaux Barfield said. "Therefore the review of the jumped start was one lap off, leading Race 

Control to make the call on the wrong lap. We have informed the Ganassi team of this error and Race 

Control is taking every step necessary to address it going forward. The Race Control team will be meeting 

first thing Monday morning to review the issue and explore remedies in advance of the race at Iowa." 

Will Power, who finished 12th, retained the IZOD IndyCar Series championship lead. Hinchcliffe 

moved into second (31 points back). Chevrolet-powered cars swept the podium.

Iowa Corn Indy 250 – Saturday, June 23 at Iowa Speedway 

Ryan Hunter-Reay's second consecutive short track victory was reason enough to celebrate. 

Closing to three points of IZOD IndyCar Series championship front-runner Will Power was a bonus. 

Hunter-Reay, who prevailed at the Milwaukee Mile a week earlier following a 90-minute rain 

delay, won the Iowa Corn Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway under caution. The start was delayed 40 minutes 

because of a thunderstorm. 

Hunter-Reay, driving the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda car, led Andretti Autosport 

teammate Marco Andretti by 1.2223 seconds on Lap 247 of 250 when the yellow flag flew the next lap 

for the No. 6 car driven by Katherine Legge making contact with the SAFER Barrier exiting Turn 2. 

Andretti, the 2011 race winner, earned his first podium finish of the season. Tony Kanaan 

followed his runner-up finish to Hunter-Reay at Milwaukee with a third place and Scott Dixon was 

fourth. Simon Pagenaud, who started last in the 25-car field, climbed to fifth in his fourth oval race. 

Honda Indy Toronto – Sunday, July 8 at Streets of Toronto’s Exhibition Place 

Following his final service stop with 30 laps remaining in the Honda Indy Toronto, Ryan Hunter- 

Reay was enjoying a Sunday drive on the Exhibition Place street circuit. 

Hunter-Reay, in the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda Chevrolet, inherited the lead on 

Lap 57 when JR Hildebrand pitted and upped his margin over Tony Kanaan from .6040 of a second to 

4.0794 seconds in the matter of five laps on the 1.75-mile, 11-turn course. 

Though Charlie Kimball replaced Kanaan as the protagonist on Lap 72, the challenger didn't 

matter. Hunter-Reay pulled away by 7.6 seconds with 10 laps left and -- staying ahead of restart pileups in 

Turns 1 and 3 with three laps left -- went on to his third consecutive victory. 

Hunter-Reay crossed the start-finish line under caution, with Kimball securing a career-best 

runner-up finish and Mike Conway coming from the 11th starting spot to place a season-high third (the 

first podium for A.J. Foyt Racing since Brazil in 2010). Tony Kanaan finished fourth and Oriol Servia 

was fifth. 

Hunter-Reay, who entered the race three points behind front-runner Will Power in the IZOD 

IndyCar Series championship standings, heads to the Edmonton Indy with a 34-point lead as Power's No. 

12 Verizon Team Penske car finished 15th (contact with the car driven by Josef Newgarden on Lap 56). 

Helio Castroneves, who finished sixth, overtook Scott Dixon (out early with an engine issue) for third (46 

points back). 

Ten different teams were represented in the top 10 of the standings. 

Edmonton Indy – Sunday, July 22 at Edmonton City Centre Airport 

Helio Castroneves earned a bit of redemption at Edmonton's City Centre Airport. 

The Team Penske driver held off Takuma Sato by .8367 of a second to win the caution-free 

Edmonton Indy on the 13-turn, 2.224-mile temporary airport circuit. 

Will Power, who started 17th because of a 10-grid spot penalty for an unapproved engine change, 

charged to third and Graham Rahal tied his road/street course best finish of the season in fourth. Alex 

Tagliani, who led a field-high 49 laps after starting fourth, finished fifth. 

Castroneves had been the runner-up in three of the past four Edmonton races, and was leading 

late in the 2010 contest when he incurred a penalty for blocking. Scott Dixon went on to win the race and 

Castroneves was credited with 10th place. 

The last Indy car street/road course caution-free race was Portland in 2007 under Champ Car 

sanction. The last caution-free oval race was 2011 at Texas Motor Speedway. 

Castroneves, who was celebrated with his usual exuberant fence climb, gained one position in 

the championship standings with his 27th Indy car victory (second of the season) -- 23 points behind 

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who finished seventh.

Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio –Sunday, Aug. 5 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course 

Scott Dixon saved fuel when he needed, kept the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car out of 

harm's way and took advantage of every opportunity. And his pit crew performed admirably, too. 

All told, it led to Dixon winning the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio for the fourth time in the past 

six years. His 29th victory tied Rick Mears for 10th all time. 

In the series’ second consecutive caution-free road race – a feat that had not been accomplished 

since 1987 (Laguna Seca, won by Bobby Rahal; Miami-Tamiami Park, won by Michael Andretti), pit 

stops were key. 

Dixon, starting fourth, beat race leader and pole sitter Will Power off pit lane on Lap 57 (their 

second and final service stop) and went on to lead the driver of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car 

across the start-finish line by 3.4619 seconds. 

Power, who picked up three bonus points for winning the pole and leading the most laps, regained 

the points lead heading into the GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 26 as front-runner Ryan 

Hunter-Reay was running sixth but started to fall through the field midway through the quick race with an 

engine issue and finished 24th. 

Simon Pagenaud, driving the No. 77 Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports car, posted his fifth topfive 

finish in his rookie IZOD IndyCar Series season. Sebastien Bourdais was a season-high fourth in the 

No. 7 TrueCar Dragon Racing car and James Hinchcliffe, who started 15th, came in fifth. 

GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma – Sunday, Aug. 26 at the raceway at Sonoma 

Ryan Briscoe had finished second, third and fourth at Sonoma in the past four years. Needless to 

say, he was due to visit Wine Country Winners Circle at the raceway at Sonoma. 

Briscoe, who started next to Team Penske teammate and pole sitter Will Power, held off Power 

on a pair of late restarts and won the GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma by 0.4408 of a second for his first 

victory since Texas in 2010. He became the seventh different winner in 13 IZOD IndyCar Series races 

this season. 

Briscoe gained the lead on a pit stop sequence on Lap 65 when he hit the blend line ahead of 

Power, who had pitted a lap earlier but was caught behind traffic during the first full-course caution in 

more than 2½ races. 

Power, who clinched the Mario Andretti Road Course Trophy for the third consecutive year, 

increased his championship points lead from five to 36 over Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport 

with two races remaining. 

Hunter-Reay was running third behind the Team Penske duo when the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun 

Drop Citrus Soda car was bumped from behind by the No. 98 Barracuda Racing car driven by Alex 

Tagliani in Turn 7 on Lap 75 and stalled. The turn of events dropped Hunter-Reay to an 18th-place finish. 

Dario Franchitti finished third and Rubens Barrichello posted a season-high fourth place after 

starting 11th. Graham Rahal placed fifth and Helio Castroneves was sixth. Simon Pagenaud clinched the 

Sunoco Rookie of the Year award with a seventh-place finish.

Grand Prix of Baltimore – Sunday, Sept. 2 at Streets of Baltimore 

For the seventh consecutive year, the IZOD IndyCar Series championship will be decided in the 

final race of the season. Ryan Hunter-Reay made sure of that with a stirring victory in the second Grand 

Prix of Baltimore. 

Hunter-Reay started 10th and overtook leader Ryan Briscoe on the front straight of a Lap 70 

restart. A full-course caution on the same lap for a four-car pileup in Turn 4 gave Briscoe, who won a 

week earlier at Sonoma, another shot. But Hunter-Reay used the last of his 90 seconds of push to pass on 

the Lap 73 restart and went on to a 1.4391-second win over Briscoe. 

Hunter-Reay made up 20 points on front-runner Will Power, who finished sixth in the 75-lap race 

on the 2.04-mile, 13-turn temporary street circuit and takes a 17-point lead into the finale Sept. 15 on the 

2-mile Auto Club Speedway oval. 

Simon Pagenaud, who a week earlier clinched the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award, finished 

third for the two time in the past three races and Scott Dixon was fourth in his 200th Indy car start. 

Rubens Barrichello overtook Power on the final restart to claim fifth. 

MAVTV 500 – Saturday, Sept. 15 at Auto Club Speedway 

The IZOD IndyCar Series championship was Will Power's to lose entering the MAVTV 500 

INDYCAR World Championships at Auto Club Speedway. After Lap 55, it became Ryan Hunter-Reay's 

to win. 

For the third consecutive year, contact in the season finale altered the title aspirations of the 

Aussie. The No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car "caught a seam" in Turn 2 of the 2-mile oval, spun and 

made contact with the SAFER Barrier while running 12th -- a few car lengths ahead of Hunter-Reay's No. 

28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda car. 

Andretti Autosport owner Michael Andretti relayed to a surprised Hunter-Reay, who 18 hours 

before had signed a two-year contract extension, that he had to finish sixth to claim his first series 

championship by one point. 

But wait. In this season of surprises, ultra-tight competition and high drama, all three collectively 

focused on the Team Penske garage as the crew converged to repair the Dallara chassis and collect 11 

more laps to finish 24th and ahead of the retired car of E.J. Viso. 

That's exactly what transpired, forcing Hunter-Reay to finish at least fifth. Crews from rival 

teams cheered as the No. 12 entry was wheeled onto pit lane. 

That went by the wayside as Alex Tagliani's engine expired with 20 laps left and then Tony 

Kanaan's car made contact with the Turn 4 SAFER Barrier on Lap 241, creating a red flag with the restart 

on Lap 244. 

Ed Carpenter earned his second IZOD IndyCar Series victory for the second consecutive year in 

the finale and with Dario Franchitti as the runner-up. Scott Dixon finished third and Helio Castroneves 

was fifth. 

Hunter-Reay was running third on the restart and lost two positions, but the 31-year-old Floridian 

regained one spot when Takuma Sato's car crashed on the final lap. The points difference, in over 15 

events on the most diverse set of racetracks in motorsports, was three points over Power. 

Hunter-Reay also clinched the A.J. Foyt Trophy for most points scored on ovals. He entered the 

race tied with Kanaan.
