The 2002 Bethlehem Central graduate moved to Los Angeles six months ago for a change of pace after playing bass in the Boston-based band “The Pulse of Boston” for four years. “I know a few people who live out here and my brother lives here, so it seemed like I’d have more opportunities,” said the 27-year-old. When Jacob’s brother asked him if he would be interested in fi lling in one time as bass player for a friend’s band, he was excited for the opportunity to connect with new musicians. Bartfield soon received a text asking if he could send them back a picture right away. He took the picture with his phone and texted it back. “They told me when and where to show up and right away I called my brother asking what I was doing,” said Barfi eld, whose brother knew the saxophone player. “Then he told me, ‘Oh, you’re going to be on “Glee.”’ I When it’s time to stop thinking about the house and the worry of living alone . . . The shoot with his scenes took place over three days, but fi rst he had to learn the music. According to Bartfi eld, all of the show’s music is prerecorded, so he really didn’t have to play anything. His role was to know the music well enough to make it look like he was playing correctly during his scenes. “It’s still important to learn the music as close to note for note as we can, and look like we’re having a good time,” he said. “For one song I played electric bass, and the cord was plugged in but nothing was happening. Number available upon request. even know if it was real. Bartfield started his music career playing the piano and cello in elementary school. He then began playing the bass at 12 years old and later learned a little guitar. The former Slingerlands resident eventually attended the Berklee College of Music as a performance major. “I’ve always loved music and knew that’s what I wanted to do,” he said. Bartfield was told to wear jeans and a plain shirt to shooting each day. Some days, wardrobe would change what the band was wearing to make them match or compliment each other. He also got his hair and makeup done each day. This concept, along with her attention to patient comfort is echoed in her practice’s goal: “An escape from the ordinary.” She said her smaller practice (it’s just her and a receptionist) is able to offer something other than an expected dental experience, which can be overwhelming for some patients. Many orthodontists’ offi ces may have a larger staff and while Burlingame feels that her offi ce will likely grow in the future, she doesn’t plan for it to get too big. Being able to provide constant one-on-one care is important to her. When it comes to relating to children and adults who need braces, Burlingame’s own experience and focus on patient connection comes in handy. With challenges of maintaining good oral hygiene and having appliances put in place, the empathy she has helps to take some of that anxiety that can sometimes surround dental visits, away. Burlingame also she advocates dental health throughout the community in many schools, is a member of the local Rotary Club, and is a provider for “Smiles Change Lives” (SCL). She also goes into local schools, visiting mostly second grade students and occasionally kindergarten classes to bring some ‘hands on’ opportunities for the kids to participate in. According to Andrea Umbreit, director of marketing and communications for SCL, the program served 750 patients in need of orthodontic care in 2011. “Our goal for this year is 900 patients,” she said. “Nationwide we have 600 orthodontists, we reach out to them through trade shows and state or regional associations…Also, if there is a patient in need of services and there isn’t a provider in their area, we’ll contact an orthodontist in that area. We’ve been pretty successful with that as well,” said Umbreit. SCL was founded in 1998 by Virgina Brown, who as a child did not receive orthodontic care when she needed it. Instead, her sister received care fi st and Brown had to wait until she was in high school to be treated. As a result, she dealt with teasing during her childhood and vowed to help children in need one day if she could. According to Umbreit, SCL is funded through corporate sponsors, and private donations. “We also have the parents (or caregivers) pay $500 (or some other portion) of the cost. This gives them a vested interest in the care,” she said. Burlingame said technology has come a long way in recent years, which makes a big difference when dealing with kids. “The wires that we use in modern orthodontics exert very light continuous forces on the teeth. That together with modern bracket design makes orthodontic treatment a much different experience than it may have been in the past.” Dr. Burlingame treats children and adults. By that time, said Barnett, the child has had the opportunity to be using language as communication in different situations. A teacher may look for a child who has been developing normally, talks fi ne at home, but may not talk at all in school – or is very selective about who he or she does talk to in school. Barnett has been in practice for over 40 years. In that time he said he’s seen approximately 35 children with selective mutism. He also said teachers and professionals should not jump on such a diagnosis too soon. This is one of the reasons that it isn’t labeled such until a child has been in school and other social situations. Criteria for the diagnosis include situational refusal, (where a child may talk with only certain family members, for instance, and refuse to talk with others) and normal speech or language in the absence of another disorder. He gave information on intervention plans to help children with the disorder and many techniques for treatment. Dr. Alan J. Barnett, a psychologist from Clifton Park, presented a workshop on selective mutism on February 7 for the Saratoga Springs City School district. Julie Cushine-Rigg/Spotlight A recent survey conducted by the SSCSD’s Office of Pupil Services revealed a positive view of the department’s work. This was a statemandated survey of parents of students with disabilities and according to Pupil Services Director Deborah Balcanoff, 700 surveys were sent out, with 132 being completed and returned. As far as surveys go, that was a better than expected return rate. “We were pleased by the response…we’re always trying to do a good job and realize that parents want to do what is best for their children,” said Balcanoff. The district also participates in Child Find, a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify and refer as early as possible all young children with disabilities and their families who are in need of Early Intervention Program or Preschool Special Education services of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
