It looks like a plastic Tupperware container,” said DeAngelo of the device that was left for air tests in the reading room. The inspector, who conducted the air tests in recent weeks when temperatures outside hovered in the high 40s, was Kevin Michaels of Hudson Valley Properties, which is headquartered in Saugerties. “We tested the area using an air cartridge that sucks in 15 liters of air for five minutes. The air in the area must be moving at the time of the test, and it was when we conducted them,” said Michaels. As the investigation continues, the library and town will work together in an effort to fi nd the exact cause of the odor. “We have somebody coming in for a second opinion, because second opinions are good. We’ll have the walls, floors and air checked,” said DeAngelo. The children’s library, which is housed on the second floor of the building, had a portion of its roof surface resurfaced last year due to leaks. That problem was remedied and is a separate issue than that of the odor detected downstairs. DOMIN dominj@spotlightnews.com hen Michele Merges Martens thought Wabout what she wanted to do for a February show at Strolling Village Artisans in Ballston Spa, she fi gured it should pay some kind of homage to love and Valentine’s Day. But Martens didn’t want to get bogged down in hearts and fl owers. That stuff’s all over the stores. She wanted something a little outside the box. So Martens decided to build a show around the color red. It’s not her favorite -- “I’m very much a blue, aqua, teal, purple type of person,” she said -- but she liked the challenge of working with a color that she typically wouldn’t. So she got busy creating pieces that incorporated red, or maybe pink or orange, and Vignettes on RED was born. “I decided to just play and explore and see what I could come up with,” she said, calling the pieces “sketches.” “They’re quicker, not quite as developed as they could be,” she said. One piece is called “Doll’s Memory” and features a doll wearing a pink dress. Alongside it is a big, glass jar full of doll pieces, clothing and other accessories. It’s more than just eye catching; to Martens, it speaks of a simpler time. She remembers playing with dolls as a little girl, dressing them up and pretending to be their mother. “This keeps the memory of playing like that,” she said. “It’s so different from how kids play today.” “Mother’s Apron” features an apron that Martens hand-dyed red and decorated with hearts. Entertainment in the Spotlight “My mom was a wonderful person,” she said. “She took good care of us. She would bake for us.” Martens knows that other people who see the piece won’t think of her mom, but she likes that the apron can evoke their own memories of their mothers or spending time in the kitchen. “The point is to have your own thoughts, your own memories,” she said. “You’re probably going to look at it and come up with something.” Martens’ mom taught her to sew when she was in fourth grade, and she’s always felt a pull to create things. She made her own scarves and sweaters throughout high school and college. Her school schedule didn’t leave time for art classes, although Martens acknowledges she’s not much of a painter or sketcher anyway. Then Martens learned about art quilts. “They’re not to put on beds,” she said. “They can tell stories. It’s a totally different way of creating.” Early on, Martens used to build her quilts around poems. Personal stories also found their way into her pieces. She had a quilt that once belonged to her grandmother that she used to take camping, and when she used pieces of it in an art quilt, she stitched an abstract picture of a forest to include. Martens is far from a perfectionist. She thinks there’s beauty in uneven edges and dangling threads. Her focus is on “serendipity,” the way things fi t together. That said, Martens acknowledges that her own taste can change. She’ll pull out pieces she did a decade ago and cringe. That’s one of the nice things about working with fi ber; she can simply redo a piece. Michele Merges Martens used a vintage commercial quilt remnant, beads, buttons, doilies and sequins to create this cherry quilt remnant that is part of her Vignettes on RED show. “I can always cut it up and re-dye it,” she said. Martens has talked to other quilters and done a lot of reading to brush up on the art. She has high praise for her fellow artists at Strolling Village Artisans, which bills itself as an “eclectic artists’ cooperative.” The shop features a new show every month, showcasing a wide variety of media and styles. Hand-knit triangles form the basis for “Triangles,” which also incorporates foil, plastic, buttons, beads and vintage rhinestones. “Vignettes on RED” will be displayed through March 3.
