Evaluation
This is your diabetes risk
Please note that individuals with a low risk of diabetes
may also develop this disease. On the other hand, high-risk
individuals may remain healthy.
0-29 points
Your diabetes risk is low.
Less than 1 of 100 individuals with answers similar to yours will
develop diabetes within the next 5 years.
30-39 points
Your diabetes risk is still low.
Approximately 2 of 100 individuals with answers similar to yours
will develop diabetes within the next 5 years.
40-49 points
Your diabetes risk is elevated.
Approximately 5 of 100 individuals with answers similar to yours
will develop diabetes within the next 5 years.
In order to determine your diabetes risk accurately, you should
take a blood sugar test at your pharmacy. You can also consult your
doctor to have your risk assessed.
50-59 points
Your diabetes risk is high.
Approximately 10 of 100 individuals with answers similar to yours
will develop diabetes within the next 5 years.
You should take a blood sugar test at your pharmacy or be
examined by your doctor. You may possibly already have diabetes.
more than 59 points
Your diabetes risk is very high.
You should definitely consult your doctor. It is possible that you
already have diabetes.
Here’s how to lower your diabetes risk
You can change some of the factors mentioned in the test
by changing your behaviour:
Overweight (waistline)
A large waist circumference is linked to a higher risk of type 2
diabetes. You should try to reduce or at least maintain your waist
size. Studies have shown that an even moderate weight reduction
can reduce your diabetes risk considerably. In general, the best way
to lose weight is to change permanently to a balanced, nutritious
diet. Individuals over 65 should consult their doctor before losing
weight.
Physical activity
Physical activity at least 5 hours a week will help maintain a lower
weight and a smaller waist size. This also improves your body‘s
insulin efficacy and regulation of blood sugar levels.
Whole-grain products
Try to give preference to grain products such as bread, bakery
products, pasta and cereal products with a high whole-grain
content. Many studies have shown that daily consumption of
whole-grain foods lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Meat
When eating meat, don‘t forget that the less beef, pork, veal and
lamb you eat, the lower your risk of type 2 diabetes.
Comments on coffee, alcohol
and cigarette consumption:
Coffee
Many studies have found a relation between regular coffee
consumption and a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes. The reason for
this is not known. If you like to drink coffee and tolerate it well,
there is at present no reason why you should not drink coffee in
moderate amounts.
Alcohol
Studies have shown that a moderate consumption of alcoholic
beverages is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. However, it is
not recommended to increase your alcohol consumption to lower
your risk of type 2 diabetes. Individuals with excessive alcohol consumption
have a higher diabetes risk. Alcohol can also cause addiction,
liver damage and cancer.
Smoking
GERMAN
DIABETES
RISK SCORE
The study, which this test is based on, did not show a statistically
increase of diabetes risk among moderate smokers. Thus, the test
assigns the same risk to moderate smoking as to non-smoking.
However, not only heavy smokers but also moderate smokers
should quit smoking because smoking increases your risk of
cancer, heart, and circulatory diseases.
