ENERGY STAR®
In 2010 the U.S. ENERGY STAR qualication criteria for a door system changed.
The new criteria eliminates the four climate zone maps that have been used
to determine the system qualication performance. Climate zones have
been replaced with a nationwide product performance criteria for opaque,
less than or equal to 1/2 lite and greater than 1/2 lite qualication criteria.
Masonite doors and sidelites use premium polyurethane insulation and multipane
insulated glass which creates superior insulating properties and lowers
heating and cooling bills. Our NFRC certied assembled door units may
qualify for ENERGY STAR. Other criteria exists for eligibility in the various programs
but use the below charts as a general guideline for which Masonite
products qualify. ENERGY STAR criteria is based on the system’s performance
as measured by the U-Value and the SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefcient).

1 U-Factor: Measures the rate of
heat transfer through a product. It
considers all elements of an assembly
including conductivity, air ow, and
glass emissivity. A lower U-Factor
indicates a better insulating product.
2 SHGC: (Solar Heat Gain Coefcient)
Measures the amount of energy that
passes through glass from the sun,
creating additional heat. The lower the
SHGC, the better it blocks solar heat.

ENERGY STAR is a government backed program to
help consumers identify energy efcient products.
It is a voluntary program administered by Natural
Resource Canada. Products that do qualify
should be labeled with an ENERGY STAR label.
Canada is broken out into different zones, so the
level of performance required differs based on where
you live. This map shows the Canadian Zones.
In order to be ENERGY STAR qualied, performance
of the system must meet U-factor and the
SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefcient) criteria.
1 U-Factor: Measures the rate of heat transfer through
a product. It considers all elements of an assembly
including conductivity, air ow, and glass emissivity. A
lower U-Factor indicates a better insulating product.

the amount
of energy that passes through glass from the
sun. For most homes, a higher SHGC value
will help offset your overall energy costs.
Although entry systems are manufactured as one unit,
doors and sidelites carry individual performance levels
and thus are labeled separately. A fully ENERGY STAR
certied system has labels on all sections of the unit.
The chart below will help you identify if your Masonite
Entry System can qualify for ENERGY STAR in your area.
