News v Ivory Coast’s Government Offers Compensation to Toxic Waste Victims ABIDJAN | Ivory Coast’s government has offered to distribute millions of dollars in compensation to thousands of people who were exposed to toxic waste last year. The scandal had generated headlines around the world when it became clear that residues from gasoline and caustic washings belonging to the Dutch oil trader Trafigura had been dumped all around the West African country’s economic capital Abidjan. Trafigura agreed to pay the government US$ 198 million earlier this year, but stressed that a local company was responsible for the illegal open-air disposal. The lion’s share of the settlement sum, about US$ 140.3 million, is to reimburse the government for the cost of cleaning up the pollution and will also be used to upgrade Abidjan’s hospitals and build a domestic refuse processing centre. Additionally, families of the 16 people who died after inhaling fumes from the waste were each offered US$ 200,000, while up to 101,000 people who received medical care for vomiting, diarrhoea and breathing difficulties were to receive US$ 408. Most victims’ groups have rejected the offer as cynical. They are also disappointed that they were not consulted about the pay scheme. In the company ranking, computer manufacturer Apple moves up as a result of Steve Jobs’s “Greener Apple” pledge to phase out PVC and other chemicals from the products. Nokia is on top because the Finnish mobile phone giant has already phased out PVC, and met or exceeded a wide set of benchmarks Greenpeace had laid down to reduce the amount and toxicity of electronic waste piling up in Asia and Africa. Dell and Lenovo, computer companies from the USA and China, come in just behind Nokia.
