Want to Earn CME
Credit for Your
Study Group?
Have you considered developing a Study Group at
your facility? There are different types of SDMS CME
Activities; one of the most popular is the Study Group.
Study Groups can meet at lunch, before or after work.
Study Groups are an inexpensive way to earn credits
on a limited budget.
What is a Study Group?
A study group is an organization or group comprised of
individuals from a single or multiple institutions and/
or multiple geographic areas (e.g., hospital, medical/
imaging center, clinic or physician’s office, urgent care
center, etc., or satellite facilities owned by the provider
and in the same geographic area) whose purpose is to
a) Provide planned continuing education programs.
b) Encourage active participation in the profession
through dissemination of information on important
professional issues to those who are directly
involved in the practice of sonography. This
includes local or regional societies.
What Activities are Eligible?
• Sonography-related CME programs presented at the
study group or local and regional societies up to 2
hours per day (2.0 CME credits).
What Activities are NOT Eligible?
• Meetings specific to the policies and procedures of
an employer or institution
• System optimization training
• Routine department or staff meetings
• Educational programs not relevant to the
sonographer’s professional responsibilities
• Educational programs over 2 hours per day (2.0
CME credits) – any educational program greater
than 2 SDMS CME credit hours is considered
a conference/seminar and requires a separate
application and application fee.
Study Group Activity Directors
Each study group must have a designated CME Activity
Director. The CME Activity Director is responsible for
SDMS News Wave July 2010 2
ensuring all study group CME activities comply with
the SDMS CME Policies and Procedures. If the CME
Activity Director responsibilities are transferred to
someone else, the study group must notify the SDMS
within thirty (30) calendar days or approval as a study
group could be withdrawn by SDMS. Study group
educational programs (sessions) must be reported
to SDMS (using the online SDMS CME Management
System) at least fifteen (15) calendar days PRIOR to
conducting the CME activity.
CME participant rosters must be submitted within
thirty (30) calendar days of the study group’s approved
CME activity. A unique CME approval number is
required for each session conducted by the study
group. Study groups may not re-use CME approval
numbers on other activities.
Study Group Levels
A study group may choose two levels of activity:
• Level 1 (1 to 12 CME credits per year)
• Level 2 (13 to 24 CME credits per year)
Study Group Fees
Level 1 (12 credits) One Year
SDMS Member: $100 / Non Member: $300
Level 1 (12 credits) Two Year
SDMS Member: $175 / Non Member: N/A
Level 1 (12 credits) Three Year
SDMS Member: $250 / Non Member: N/A
Level 2 (24 credits) One Year
SDMS Member: $200 / Non Member: $300

Level 2 (24 credits) Two Year
SDMS Member: $350 / Non Member: N/A
Level 2 (24 credits) Three Year
SDMS Member: $500 / Non Member: N/A
If a study group chooses Level 1, they can later
‘upgrade’ to the Level 2 by paying the additional
processing fee. Study groups may not move from Level
2 to Level 1 and processing fees are non-refundable. If
the SDMS determines that a study group’s application
or educational activity does not comply with the
SDMS CME Policies and Procedures, the CME Activity
Director will be notified and corrective action will be
taken. If a study group has three (3) violations in one
year, the study group’s approval will be withdrawn and
the study group will not be allowed to submit CME
credit applications until such time as the Study Group
SDMS News Wave July 2010 3
can provide adequate assurance that all SDMS CME
policies and procedures will be met in the future.
Revocation of CME Study Group Provider Status
A study group’s status as a CME provider may be
revoked for:
1. Issuing more SDMS CME credits than approved
during the approval period.
2. Failure to submit the required meeting
documentation at least fifteen (15) days prior to the
CME activity.
3. Failure to submit participant rosters within thirty
(30) calendar days.
4. Failure to comply with SDMS CME Policies and
Procedures.
Current Hot Topic in the
SDMS Discussion Forums:
Friends and Family in the Exam Room
“We are working on a policy to help with some difficult
situations that occur with the ultrasound exam
because of increased number of family and friends in
room. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Any
policy in force? Any specific criteria or limitations?
Thanks for your help”.
Here’s just a couple of the responses so far.
“...We do not allow any of the entourage into
the scan room until we have finished the test...
that’s what it is, a medical test, not a circus side
show. We politely explain that we will bring the
family in when we show the mother... We don’t
have a separate viewing screen for the mom...
only the monitor on the machine and if I turn it
so she can see it, then I can’t see it very well, so
at the end of the exam, I turn the screen for the
mom, bring in anyone who wants of come and do
the entertainment part of the exam and then I can
enjoy that part as well…”
“If you behave as a professional and answer all the
questions appropriately, the general public would
know why it’s important that a skilled credentialed
sonographer holds the transducer. Those that say
they can’t discuss anything appear to be button
pushers.”
“I understand why a young sonographer with not
many years experience would appreciate no family;
but this is a situation that asks the physician to
allow family in for delivery/ exam rooms. It’s a
family situation...one to be shared. I have found
that with malformations the family is even more
important. Everyone needs to be allowed to
have the questions and concerns answered. The
physician allows family in for the delivery we should
also”.
Item #: 8591
Technically, abdominal vascular
sonography is the most challenging
of the vascular applications. The
vessels are deeper than those of
the neck and extremities and, except for the aorta,
rather small. They often travel at awkward angles to
the transducer, making it difficult to place a sample
SDMS News Wave July 2010 10
volume and obtain reasonably accurate velocity
measurements. These and other factors make
abdominal vascular sonography highly operator- and
volume-dependent and therefore more successful in
some hands than others.
Current position:
Clinical Assistant
Professor and Program
Director of Diagnostic
Medical Sonography at
New York University
Year awarded fellow
status: 2001
What inspired you to make a career in
sonography?
One of my mentors in my X-ray program at
Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J. suggested
that I go into diagnostic medical sonography. I
respected his opinion and decided to go to school to
learn sonography.
I worked as a sonographer for 10 years in a city
hospital in the Bronx. I enjoyed the challenges of
working in such a dynamic department and being
a clinical instructor. Since I had not attended a
sonography program in New York, I became involved
in the local Sonography Society as a way to meet
other local sonographers. This participation led me
to become involved in the NYU Medical Center’s
sonography program. When the position as clinical
education coordinator became available, I applied
and eventually became program director, the
position I have held since 1993. NYU has decided
to discontinue the program. The last graduating
class at NYU will be 2012. While I am sad to see
the program end at NYU, I am very excited about
moving the program and starting it at another
institution in New York.
Did you have a memorable role model/teacher?
Who was it?
I went to the Maryland Institute of Ultrasound and
was in Dr. Roger Saunders’ second graduating
class. The early mentors in my career include Dr.
Saunders, Roy Soares and Russell Clark, who not
SDMS News Wave July 2010 11
This is a continuing series of interviews of
our distinguished SDMS Fellow members.
only taught me sonography but also taught me about
professionalism. Sonography is not just taking
‘pretty pictures.’ They taught me to never consider
a scan to be finished until you’re able to document
as much information as possible. I still follow and
teach this philosophy and I also try to instill a level
of professionalism in my students. This carries over
to the way they communicate with their teacher and
supervisors, their behavior in class and clinic, and
the way they dress, which hopefully all contributes to
their being treated as professionals.
What was the most significant advance in the
technology that you directly experienced?
I think the most significant advance has been the
size of machines– they’ve become more technically
complex, yet smaller and more portable. On the
other hand, the future uses of 3D, 4D and contrast
media are still unknown. I don’t know if it’s an
advancement in the technology but learning about
ergonomics has become much more important. I’ve
learned not to fear the changes in technology, but to
embrace them.
Were there any memorable developments,
cases or events that changed the way you
practiced sonography?
Some years ago I began to have problems with
my shoulder and my arms, which was one of the
reasons I went into education. I was feeling the
effects of scanning all day, every day.
What changes do you predict in the immediate
future?
I think we’re going to see more musculoskeletal
sonography performed, and I also believe that
sometime in the near future we’ll start using more
contrast media as they do now in Europe and other
countries. Also, as the equipment gets smaller, it has
become more portable and sonograms are being
performed in more places. Right now, I’m part of a
volunteer program that sent me last month to rural
Bangladesh to help teach obstetrical sonography to
paramedics so that they can provide better medical
care to the people here.

What advice would you give to students/ future
sonographers?
My advice is to pursue this profession if you have
a passion for it. You’ll spend many hours working
with people, with patients, with colleagues, and,
besides working hard, you need to enjoy yourself.
I find the sonography community to be very caring
and sharing. I have made many, many friends in
the community, and, if you’re passionate about
something, you will find other people who are
passionate about it, too.
Lindsay Hamilton
is a cardiac
sonography student
in her final year at
Merced College in
Merced, CA. She
grew up in Coeur
d’Alene, ID and has
lived in the Pacific
Northwest for most
of her life. In 2004,
Lindsay received a
Bachelor’s Degree
in Biology from
the University of
Puget Sound.
Afterwards, she spent several years traveling
before making the leap into sonography. Much
of Lindsay’s free time is spent in the outdoors;
although she also enjoys reading books,
cooking, and sewing. Obtaining an education
in sonography from an accredited institution is
of utmost importance to Lindsay which is the
reason she moved to California’s central valley
to attend the Merced College’s program.
When asked what inspired Lindsay to choose
sonography as a career, she replied “I really
like the exploratory aspect of sonography.
SDMS News Wave July 2010 12
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is the opportunities that
being in education has given me. I am active in
my professional organizations and get to work with
groups of intelligent, hard working and sharing
colleagues. As an educator, it’s very fulfilling to see
students grow both professionally and personally. I
often have students who are shy and timid and it’s a
pleasure to watch them mature and gain confidence.
Later, some of them become clinical instructors and
adjunct faculty.
Answering a physician’s question about a
patient requires me to investigate anatomy
and draw upon my knowledge. I enjoy being
challenged and like that sonography allows
me to think critically and get creative.”
Additionally, Lindsay enjoys working
with people and appreciates that as a
sonographer she will spend her day doing
something beneficial for someone else.
Lindsay also likes that sonography offers
countless opportunities for career growth.
She is inspired to become credentialed in as
many specialties as possible and believes
there is always more to learn as technology
advances.
We asked Lindsay why she joined SDMS.
She said SDMS gives her access to an
incredible amount of information about
the field of sonography. She is able to
supplement topics in class with archived
CME presentations on the website and
also utilize discussions from the SDMS
Discussion Forum to gain insight from current
sonographers. The Journal of Diagnostic
Medical Sonography has proven invaluable
for class research papers, and keeps her
informed with advancements in the field. The
SDMS Sound News and News Wave gives
her a sense of connection to the sonography
community. Lindsay ended the conversation
with, “Seeing faces and reading about
accomplishments makes me proud to be part
of a supportive and encouraging group.”
Lindsay, welcome to the SDMS!
