The order covers <strong>the</strong> provision of<br />
120 large-bore diesel eng<strong>in</strong>es and<br />
generators, which toge<strong>the</strong>r will<br />
form <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>the</strong> six projects.<br />
The value of <strong>the</strong> order to <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
is estimated at around Euro 300<br />
million. Grupo Bert<strong>in</strong> is also <strong>MAN</strong><br />
Lat<strong>in</strong> America’s largest truck customer,<br />
this be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>MAN</strong> Group’s<br />

<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> will supply gensets,<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r power-plant components.<br />
The six projects will generate<br />
a total of over 1,000 MW of<br />
electricity, form<strong>in</strong>g a considerable<br />
contribution to <strong>the</strong> national grid,<br />
and will be built close to <strong>the</strong> city of<br />
Salvador <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>astern state<br />
of Bahia. The power plant is due to<br />

DSME Signs Up for<br />

At a ceremony <strong>in</strong> Copenhagen <strong>in</strong><br />
February 2010, <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> signed<br />
a development agreement, effective<br />
immediately, with Korea’s Daewoo<br />
Shipbuild<strong>in</strong>g & Mar<strong>in</strong>e Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Co., Ltd. (DSME).<br />
The two companies have agreed<br />
to jo<strong>in</strong>tly develop and exploit <strong>the</strong><br />
adaptation of DSME’s high-pressure<br />
cryogenic gas-supply system<br />
for <strong>in</strong>stallation with <strong>MAN</strong> B&W ME-<br />
GI eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
The ME-GI eng<strong>in</strong>e is a gas-<strong>in</strong>jection,<br />
dual-fuel, low-speed diesel<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e that, when act<strong>in</strong>g as ma<strong>in</strong><br />
propulsion <strong>in</strong> LNG carriers or any<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r type of merchant mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
vessel, can burn any ratio of fueloil<br />
and gas, depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> energy<br />
source available on board and<br />
dictated by relative cost and owner<br />
preference.<br />
While LNG carriers carry a gas<br />
cargo, <strong>the</strong> potential for carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />
gas aboard o<strong>the</strong>r vessel types is<br />

currently subject to a parallel development,<br />
for which a cryogenic<br />
gas fuel-supply system can be<br />
used.<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> has decided to<br />
make a full-scale demonstration<br />
and performance verification<br />
test of <strong>the</strong> GI pr<strong>in</strong>ciple for all<br />
k<strong>in</strong>ds of mar<strong>in</strong>e applications on its<br />
4T50ME-X R&D test eng<strong>in</strong>e, which<br />
will be rebuilt as a 4T50ME-GI eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
ready to operate on natural<br />
gas by end-2010.<br />
The agreement covers <strong>the</strong> terms<br />
for jo<strong>in</strong>tly decid<strong>in</strong>g a time schedule<br />
for develop<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
DSME’s cryogenic, high-pressure<br />
gas-supply system on <strong>the</strong> test eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
at <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s test facility<br />
<strong>in</strong> Copenhagen. The gas-supply<br />
system will subsequently be developed<br />
for general use on <strong>MAN</strong> B&W<br />
ME-GI eng<strong>in</strong>es, and will ultimately<br />
be adopted as an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of<br />

A significant step<br />
At <strong>the</strong> ceremony, Grøne said: “This<br />
is a significant step <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development<br />
of <strong>the</strong> ME-GI eng<strong>in</strong>e and perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
systems, which I expect to<br />
have a major impact on <strong>the</strong> market<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. Indeed, <strong>the</strong>re is already<br />
huge <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> this<br />
k<strong>in</strong>d of technology as operators<br />
look to control costs and emissions.<br />
We see many new opportunities<br />
for <strong>the</strong> ME-GI’s <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
flexibility and greater control with<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> LNG sector but also, and not<br />
least, generally with<strong>in</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
transportation.”<br />
YoungMan Lee added: “The ME-<br />
GI eng<strong>in</strong>e comb<strong>in</strong>ed with DSME’s<br />
high-pressure gas system will be a<br />
milestone <strong>in</strong> ship-propulsion systems.<br />
In apply<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ME-GI eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
and our supply system, operators<br />
will achieve significant<br />
economic benefits while simultaneously<br />
benefitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> environment.<br />
For <strong>in</strong>stance, apply<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
ME-GI eng<strong>in</strong>e and DSME system<br />
to a 14,000-TEU conta<strong>in</strong>er ship<br />
could potentially reduce annual<br />
operation costs by USD 12 million<br />
or greater, based on current gas<br />
and oil prices. Moreover, SO x , NO x<br />
with EGR or DeNox and CO 2 emissions<br />
would also be reduced at <strong>the</strong><br />
same time.”<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> employment situation<br />
at our Augsburg plant. Our longterm<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> modernisation<br />
of our production network is<br />
now pay<strong>in</strong>g off.”<br />
Besides <strong>the</strong> bonus of ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
a high capacity utilisation at<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s production <strong>in</strong> Augsburg,<br />
<strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g bid also opens<br />
up <strong>the</strong> possibility for follow-up<br />
power-plant orders from Grupo<br />
Bert<strong>in</strong> where <strong>the</strong> possibility of fitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> plant with <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Turbo</strong><br />
steam turb<strong>in</strong>es is also be<strong>in</strong>g considered.<br />
These can be run on eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
waste-heat, significantly<br />
boost<strong>in</strong>g overall efficiency and<br />
would represent a project where<br />
<strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t skills of <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>MAN</strong><br />
<strong>Diesel</strong> & <strong>Turbo</strong> company could<br />
dovetail <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g diesel comb<strong>in</strong>ed-cycle<br />
power plants.<br />

H. Cegielski – Poznan S.A. (HCP) has<br />
ordered two <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> TCS-PTG18<br />
Power Turb<strong>in</strong>e systems from <strong>MAN</strong><br />
<strong>Diesel</strong>’s <strong>Turbo</strong>charger Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit.<br />
The TCS-PTGs will boost <strong>the</strong> efficiency<br />
of two environmentally friendly,<br />
diesel power plants to be constructed<br />
by Land & Mar<strong>in</strong>e for renewable<br />
energy company Blue-NG <strong>in</strong> London.<br />
A H. Cegielski-built <strong>MAN</strong> B&W<br />
7K60MC-S eng<strong>in</strong>e produc<strong>in</strong>g 13.9<br />
MW lies at <strong>the</strong> heart of each plant.<br />
Blue-NG is committed to be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
best <strong>in</strong> class at build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most<br />
efficient power plants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world,<br />
and is spar<strong>in</strong>g no effort to optimally<br />
use <strong>the</strong> energy created by <strong>the</strong> two<br />
Comb<strong>in</strong>ed Heat and <strong>in</strong>telligent<br />
Power (CHiP) sites. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly,<br />
no less than 5 generators <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />
<strong>in</strong> 5 cycles will accumulate a total<br />
of 18.3 MW (electrical power) at<br />
each plant.<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s latest, high-efficiency<br />
TCA turbochargers make<br />
it possible to divert more exhaust<br />
gas to power turb<strong>in</strong>e-based, energy-recovery<br />
systems. In such applications,<br />
<strong>the</strong> power turb<strong>in</strong>e is <strong>in</strong>serted<br />
<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> exhaust-gas system<br />
parallel to <strong>the</strong> turbocharger. Here,<br />
it drives an electrical generator via<br />
a reduction gearbox and receives<br />
up to 13% of <strong>the</strong> exhaust-gas flow,<br />
diverted from <strong>the</strong> power of <strong>the</strong><br />
ma<strong>in</strong>-eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
A TCS-PTG18 will be employed<br />
at each of <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g plants,<br />
based on <strong>the</strong> newly developed,<br />
high-efficiency turb<strong>in</strong>e of a TCR18<br />
turbocharger. A high-efficiency,<br />
high-speed gearbox will reduce<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>e speed to generator speed,<br />
with <strong>the</strong> generator and gearbox<br />
connected to each o<strong>the</strong>r by a highly<br />
flexible coupl<strong>in</strong>g. The TCS-PTG<br />
will supply up to 570 kW to <strong>the</strong> grid<br />
and <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> power plant’s<br />
overall efficiency by some 3%. At<br />
lower eng<strong>in</strong>e loads, <strong>the</strong> TCS-PTG<br />
will be shut down. Control valves<br />
and fast-act<strong>in</strong>g emergency valves<br />
for emergency shutdown are <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exhaust system to<br />
ensure reliable, safe operation.<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> holds more than 30<br />
years’ expertise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development,<br />
production and servic<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
power-turb<strong>in</strong>e applications, and<br />
can boast of some 50 reference<br />
plants, mostly <strong>in</strong>stalled aboard<br />
ships. The London order sets<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r milestone as it is <strong>the</strong> first<br />
order for <strong>the</strong> newly developed generation<br />
of power turb<strong>in</strong>es based on<br />
<strong>the</strong> new TCR turbocharger series.<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> sees good potential<br />
for fur<strong>the</strong>r applications of TCS-<br />
PTG waste-heat recovery systems<br />
<strong>in</strong> diesel power plants and mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
applications. “The dramatic <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
<strong>in</strong> fuel prices <strong>in</strong> 2008 has<br />
revived <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> systems that<br />
maximise overall system efficiency,”<br />
says Dr. Antonio Fernandez, Vice<br />
President Sales and Promotion at<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> <strong>Turbo</strong>charger. “The<br />
ongo<strong>in</strong>g CO 2 -debate, and <strong>the</strong> fact<br />
that more and more companies<br />
are consider<strong>in</strong>g environmental issues<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir newbuild<strong>in</strong>g projects,<br />
will make <strong>the</strong> waste-heat recovery<br />
system an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g option.”<br />

PrimeServ Retrofits First SCR System<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> establishes NO x reduction milestone<br />
In a significant step, <strong>the</strong> Augsburg<br />
branch of PrimeServ, <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s<br />
after-sales group, has successfully<br />
retrofitted an SCR (Selective Catalytic<br />
Reduction) system aboard a<br />
Norwegian tanker.<br />
This represents <strong>the</strong> first time that<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> PrimeServ alone has<br />
project-managed, sold and put<br />
such a system <strong>in</strong>to commission on<br />
a mar<strong>in</strong>e, medium-speed eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
The project also marks an important<br />
step <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> exhaust-gas after-treatment<br />
market as well as this<br />
particular retrofit segment.<br />
Norwegian legislation<br />
Governmental authorities, especially<br />
<strong>in</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avian countries,<br />
provide <strong>in</strong>centives to mar<strong>in</strong>e operators<br />
that implement emissionreduction<br />
technologies. One example<br />
of this is <strong>the</strong> Norwegian NO x<br />
fund that subsidises <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong><br />
NO x -reduction measures on vessels<br />
sail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Norwegian waters.<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ally approached <strong>MAN</strong><br />
<strong>Diesel</strong> PrimeServ, Augsburg <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

NO x emissions aboard its product<br />

SCR system ma<strong>in</strong> components<br />
An SCR system’s ma<strong>in</strong> components<br />
comprise a reactor conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
ceramic catalyst elements, a<br />
urea system that covers storage,<br />
supply, dos<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>jection, as<br />
well as a control system.<br />

Bohai Ferry Co., Ltd. has ordered four <strong>MAN</strong> 16V32/40 propulsion plants to power two passenger vessels to supplement<br />
its fleet.<br />
The four-stroke eng<strong>in</strong>es will be built at <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s production centre <strong>in</strong> Augsburg, Germany, and will operate at 750<br />
rpm, provid<strong>in</strong>g a total of 16 MW of <strong>in</strong>stalled power for <strong>the</strong> 2300P/2500LM RoPax vessels.<br />
The ferries will be built at Huanghai Shipbuild<strong>in</strong>g Co. Ltd., <strong>in</strong> RongCheng City, Shandong Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, and <strong>the</strong> order <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
an option for two o<strong>the</strong>r vessels.<br />
Bohai Ferry Co., Ltd. has also ordered tw<strong>in</strong>-screw, controllable pitch propeller (CPP) propulsion systems from Alpha,<br />
suitable for ice class B. The <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> scope of supply <strong>in</strong>cludes two s<strong>in</strong>gle-stage reduction gearboxes from Renk for<br />
each vessel. Delivery of <strong>the</strong> propulsion systems is expected to take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half of 2011.<br />
Bohai Ferry Co., Ltd is a major passenger-l<strong>in</strong>er transportation enterprise <strong>in</strong> Bohai Bay, Nor<strong>the</strong>astern Ch<strong>in</strong>a. It deals<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ly with passenger transportation on <strong>the</strong> Yantai-Dalian and Penglai-Dalian sea routes where <strong>the</strong> company already<br />
operates several, large passenger l<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

The new eng<strong>in</strong>es will be delivered<br />
to Petrobras and Vale, who toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
draw on Brazil’s long-stand<strong>in</strong>g tradition<br />
<strong>in</strong> shipp<strong>in</strong>g, shipbuild<strong>in</strong>g, hydrocarbon<br />
exploration and m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, as<br />
well as its general status as a BRIC<br />
country characterised by a rapidly<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g economy.<br />
Petrobras, Brazil’s mult<strong>in</strong>ational<br />
energy company, has ordered 10<br />
× 6S70ME-C eng<strong>in</strong>es to power a<br />
new generation of Suezmax tankers<br />
as part of a massive fleet-renewal<br />
programme. The Petrobras<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es will be constructed by<br />
Doosan Eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Korea with <strong>the</strong><br />
ships be<strong>in</strong>g built at <strong>the</strong> new Estaleiro<br />
Atlântico Sul (EAS) shipyard.<br />
Located <strong>in</strong> Pernambuco <strong>State</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast of <strong>the</strong> country, EAS<br />

The Brazilian energy company’s<br />
new vessels will jo<strong>in</strong> a substantial,<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g fleet that also <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
chartered shuttle tankers powered<br />
by S70ME-C eng<strong>in</strong>es. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore,<br />
several Panamax, Aframax<br />
and Suezmax tankers, with <strong>the</strong> latter<br />
operat<strong>in</strong>g as shuttle tankers, a<br />
segment <strong>in</strong> which <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> has<br />
vast experience and expertise, are<br />

to serve Brazil’s off-shore oil fields.<br />
M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g logistics<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> has also received<br />
an order from Seamar for 4 ×<br />
7S80ME-C8 eng<strong>in</strong>es to power<br />
vessels to be put <strong>in</strong>to service for<br />
Vale S.A., <strong>the</strong> second-largest m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
company <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world and one<br />
of <strong>the</strong> largest logistics operators<br />
<strong>in</strong> Brazil. These will be <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />
aboard 4 × 400,000 dwt bulk carriers<br />
to be built at DSME Shipyard <strong>in</strong><br />
Korea. Vale will eventually build ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
four such giant ships <strong>in</strong> Brazil.<br />
Additionally, STX Shipyard <strong>in</strong> Korea<br />
will build 4 + 4 × 400,000 dwt<br />
bulk carriers for its own shipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
company, Pan Ocean for long-term<br />
charter to Vale. These will be powered<br />
by <strong>MAN</strong> B&W 7S80ME-C eng<strong>in</strong>es,<br />
built by STX Eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Each of <strong>the</strong>se mega-size bulk carriers<br />
will be employed to move<br />
iron-ore shipments from Brazil’s<br />
vast reserves through its nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
load<strong>in</strong>g port, near São Luis, and<br />
Tubarão to <strong>the</strong> south, to satisfy <strong>the</strong><br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g appetite for raw materials,<br />
primarily <strong>in</strong> East Asia.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ally, Vale has also placed ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
order <strong>in</strong> Korea for four Capesize<br />
bulk carriers from Sundong<br />
Shipyard. These two ships will be<br />
driven by <strong>MAN</strong> B&W 6S70ME-C<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es, built by Hyundai.<br />
The Vale newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs will jo<strong>in</strong><br />
an already sizable fleet that has recently<br />

purchase of several, secondhand<br />

The team leader<br />
Michael Eckart is one of <strong>the</strong> few<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> employees who can<br />
genu<strong>in</strong>ely claim to be a native son<br />
of Augsburg, Bavaria, <strong>the</strong> city that<br />
is so central to <strong>the</strong> development of<br />
<strong>the</strong> diesel eng<strong>in</strong>e. Born just a couple<br />
of hundred metres from <strong>the</strong> famous<br />
factory where Rudolf <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
developed his design, it was diesel<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es that brought him back<br />
home after years study<strong>in</strong>g mechanical<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Wuerzburg<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r assignments around<br />
Lake Constance.<br />
He says: “Hav<strong>in</strong>g personally witnessed<br />
<strong>the</strong> demise of Augsburg’s<br />
500 year old textile <strong>in</strong>dustry and<br />
<strong>the</strong> loss of tens of thousands of<br />
workplaces, I always look to <strong>the</strong><br />
future and never forget that only<br />
change and growth will keep our<br />
company’s proud, 250-year-old<br />
tradition alive.”<br />
Eckart also believes that: “Not<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess segment. Once aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

sales. Michael Eckart says:<br />
“Whenever a customer urgently<br />
needs parts, <strong>the</strong>y can get <strong>the</strong>m<br />
promptly from us because of our<br />
prime location. We coord<strong>in</strong>ate all<br />
<strong>the</strong> logistics from here.”<br />
High-speed<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> has <strong>in</strong>cluded highspeed<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> its portfolio s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
<strong>the</strong> turn of <strong>the</strong> year when <strong>MAN</strong><br />
Truck & Bus transferred that part<br />
of its bus<strong>in</strong>ess to <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> and<br />
created <strong>the</strong> High-Speed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Unit. The new entity offers diesel<br />

mar<strong>in</strong>as and harbours act as a<br />
magnet for smaller vessels, such<br />
as motorboats and yachts, represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a potentially lucrative<br />
market for PrimeServ and <strong>the</strong> highspeed<br />

Manager. Ano<strong>the</strong>r native German,<br />
Herbst studied political economics<br />
<strong>in</strong> Augsburg and jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>re while still a student. Upon<br />
graduation, she jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> company<br />
full-time and subsequently took<br />
an opportunity to come to Florida.<br />
Herbst’s tasks ma<strong>in</strong>ly cover <strong>the</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial side of th<strong>in</strong>gs – <strong>in</strong>vestments,<br />
budget<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>voic<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
bill<strong>in</strong>g. “I also look <strong>in</strong>to bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
process flows to see if <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g well and try to f<strong>in</strong>d better<br />
solutions if <strong>the</strong>y are not. These<br />
processes give me a good overview<br />
of what’s go<strong>in</strong>g on at this facility<br />
and throughout <strong>the</strong> company,”<br />
she says.

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy<br />
In recent years, PrimeServ Ft.<br />
Lauderdale has worked with<br />
customers on develop<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
contracts, <strong>the</strong> prime example<br />
of which is its EMC (Eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Management Concept) agreement<br />
with Norwegian <strong>Cruise</strong> L<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Herbst says: “This is someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that is convenient for <strong>the</strong> customer<br />
and that is also good for us. Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
contracts is one of <strong>the</strong> areas<br />
that we are currently focus<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on and, thus far, <strong>the</strong> customer is<br />
really happy with our service. It’s a<br />
fleet of 10 ships and we perform<br />
all k<strong>in</strong>ds of ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, from eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
to turbochargers, all <strong>the</strong> way<br />
to electronics.<br />
The EMC agreement with Norwegian<br />
is <strong>the</strong> first PrimeServ ever<br />
established worldwide, but Ft.<br />
Lauderdale also handles ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
agreements with Alaska<br />
Tankers, Bell Co and Aqua Electra<br />
(Curacao) for Augsburg and carries<br />
out <strong>the</strong> service work on its<br />
behalf. Herbst says: “This is one of<br />
our most important strategies and<br />
so far it’s go<strong>in</strong>g well. We are cont<strong>in</strong>uously<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g for o<strong>the</strong>r, suitable<br />
customers to sign EMC agreements<br />
with and are currently talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to a number of <strong>in</strong>terested cruise<br />
l<strong>in</strong>es. We can use <strong>the</strong> example of<br />
Norwegian to attract <strong>the</strong>m. That’s<br />
been runn<strong>in</strong>g successfully for over<br />
two years now.”<br />
Future prospects<br />
Michael Eckart says: “The market<br />
has grown a lot s<strong>in</strong>ce we started<br />
but <strong>the</strong> segments – <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />
work we offer – haven’t really<br />
changed. We are still ma<strong>in</strong>ly focussed<br />
on four-stroke and turbochargers,<br />
but <strong>the</strong> volume of work<br />
has grown a lot.” Eckart th<strong>in</strong>ks that<br />
<strong>the</strong> market is difficult at <strong>the</strong> moment.<br />
But this has not affected<br />
his after-sales bus<strong>in</strong>ess too much.<br />
Even dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> crisis, many ships<br />
have to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir it<strong>in</strong>eraries<br />
and people need electricity from<br />
power stations.<br />
Eckart also sees <strong>the</strong> cruise market<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United <strong>State</strong>s as be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
one of <strong>the</strong> fastest grow<strong>in</strong>g markets<br />
<strong>in</strong> general and th<strong>in</strong>ks this trend will<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue because of its convenience<br />
as a way to holiday.<br />
Andrea Herbst agrees: “It’s easy<br />
to just go aboard a ship and have<br />
a nice vacation. Despite <strong>the</strong> difficult<br />
economic situation right now,<br />
cruise l<strong>in</strong>ers still have <strong>the</strong>ir customers<br />
so I th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> market will cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
to grow. Ten years ago, go<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on a cruise was ma<strong>in</strong>ly for people<br />
of high-<strong>in</strong>come but, <strong>the</strong>se days,<br />
anybody can afford to go so I still<br />
see a lot of potential <strong>the</strong>re.”<br />
Epilogue<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> celebrated <strong>the</strong> official<br />
open<strong>in</strong>g of PrimeServ Ft. Lauderdale<br />
<strong>in</strong> December 2009 <strong>in</strong> front of<br />
more than 250 customers, suppliers,<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess partners along with<br />
local dignitaries.<br />
In his speech to <strong>the</strong> assembled<br />
guests, Michael Eckart said: “This<br />
facility cont<strong>in</strong>ues to demonstrate<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> PrimeServ’s dedication<br />
to enhanced customer service<br />
for North America, and <strong>the</strong> cruise<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> particular. In addition,<br />

Propeller Efficiency by Impressive 12%<br />
Retrofit propeller solution delivers significant fuel sav<strong>in</strong>gs to passenger ferry<br />
An optimised propeller from <strong>MAN</strong><br />
<strong>Diesel</strong> has helped <strong>the</strong> Scandl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
passenger ferry, <strong>the</strong> M/V “Sassnitz”,<br />
achieve <strong>in</strong>creased efficiency of 12%<br />
on its daily sail between Trelleborg,<br />
Sweden and Sassnitz, Germany.<br />
Scandl<strong>in</strong>es is one of Europe’s<br />
largest ferry companies, a result<br />
of <strong>the</strong> fusion between <strong>the</strong> largest,<br />
national ferry l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> Denmark<br />
and Germany. Bus<strong>in</strong>ess is based<br />
on <strong>the</strong> swift and reliable transport<br />
of both passengers and cargo on<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational routes with<strong>in</strong> Danish,<br />
Fitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new propeller blades<br />
German and Swedish waters, as<br />
well as fur<strong>the</strong>r afield to <strong>the</strong> Baltic<br />
states and F<strong>in</strong>land.<br />
Scandl<strong>in</strong>es operates 17 ferries<br />
on 8 routes between 11 harbours<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baltic Sea. Last year, <strong>the</strong><br />
shipp<strong>in</strong>g company transported<br />
more than 17.3 million passengers,<br />
4 million cars, 1 million lorries,<br />
84,000 goods wagons, and<br />
68,000 busses.<br />

project eng<strong>in</strong>eer says: “We started<br />
to look at propeller retrofit solutions<br />
as a direct consequence of<br />

show an even better result.”<br />
He adds: “The ship reverses a<br />
lot <strong>in</strong>-harbour and <strong>the</strong>refore it’s<br />
vital for us to atta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> optimal<br />
propeller blade design. As such,<br />
<strong>the</strong> propeller set-up has been optimised<br />
to best fit this particular operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
profile without compromis<strong>in</strong>g<br />
overall efficiency.”<br />
In order to optimise <strong>the</strong> process,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Sassnitz’s operat<strong>in</strong>g profile<br />
was thoroughly analysed by<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s propeller design department.<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> PrimeServ<br />
participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation of<br />
<strong>the</strong> new propeller blades on <strong>the</strong><br />
Sassnitz, which is powered by four<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> L40/54 eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
“<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> and Scandl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
have cooperated with each o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
for over 20 years on controllable<br />
pitch propellers,” says Brian Grusgaard,<br />
Manager of Upgrad<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
Retrofit Support at <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
Propulsion After-Sales. “Scandl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
is a front runner with<strong>in</strong> retrofit<br />
propeller optimisation and <strong>the</strong> M/V<br />
Sassnitz’s fuel consumption has<br />
now been reduced, which is also<br />
an environmentally friendly solution.<br />
We expect many such retrofits<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future, and are currently<br />
<strong>in</strong> contact with a good number of<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r shipowners who are <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

Hazardous Substance Declaration<br />
to Lead to Cleaner Products<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative pre-empts IMO ship recycl<strong>in</strong>g regulations for newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
For reasons of cost, <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al scrapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of ships and <strong>the</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g of materials<br />
have gravitated to develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
countries and attract considerable<br />
criticism regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g conditions<br />
of <strong>the</strong> personnel <strong>in</strong>volved and<br />
<strong>the</strong> disposal of potentially harmful<br />
residues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ships.<br />
In particular, given lifespans of<br />
merchant ships <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region of<br />
30 years, <strong>the</strong> scrapped hulls can<br />
conta<strong>in</strong> substances which have<br />
long been identified as hazardous<br />
and outlawed <strong>in</strong> many parts of <strong>the</strong><br />
works. Examples are asbestos<br />
and lead which were widely used<br />
as <strong>in</strong>sulation for pipes and <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
respectively, before <strong>the</strong>ir risks<br />
were recognised.<br />
To counter this situation, <strong>the</strong> International<br />
Maritime Organisation<br />
has developed <strong>the</strong> IMO Convention<br />
on Safe and Environmentally<br />
Sound Recycl<strong>in</strong>g of Ships, a set<br />
of regulations controll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> use<br />
of hazardous substances <strong>in</strong> newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
The legislation started<br />
ratification <strong>in</strong> 2009 and affects<br />
newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs with keels laid <strong>in</strong><br />
about 2013. Sensibly, <strong>the</strong> legislation<br />
applies to all <strong>the</strong> components<br />
of <strong>the</strong> ship and places <strong>the</strong> onus on<br />
<strong>the</strong> manufacturer to m<strong>in</strong>imise or,<br />
where possible, completely elim<strong>in</strong>ate<br />
harmful substances from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
products. Any unavoidable residual<br />
substances must be entered <strong>in</strong><br />
an Inventory of Hazardous Materials<br />
(IHM) issued by <strong>the</strong> shipyard<br />
and based on <strong>the</strong> declarations<br />
from its suppliers.<br />
As an eng<strong>in</strong>e, turbocharger, gear<br />
and propeller supplier, <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>’s<br />
products are categorised as<br />
“Structure and Equipment” under<br />
<strong>the</strong> IMO Convention. <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> is<br />
obliged to issue declarations under<br />
Table A Materials, which is mandatory<br />
for new and exist<strong>in</strong>g ships,<br />
and Table B Materials, which is<br />
mandatory for new ships and voluntary<br />
for exist<strong>in</strong>g ships. “These <strong>in</strong>volve<br />
a Materials Declaration for all<br />
our products conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g materials<br />
identified by IMO as hazardous, as<br />
well as a Declaration of Conformity<br />
which confirms that we have <strong>the</strong><br />
quality processes and procedures<br />
we need to ensure <strong>the</strong> correctness<br />
of our Materials Declarations,”<br />
note Dr. Holger Gehr<strong>in</strong>g and Harald<br />
Krekel, who implemented <strong>the</strong><br />
process for compliance with this<br />
convention <strong>in</strong> <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g accompanied <strong>the</strong> development<br />
of <strong>the</strong> new IMO legislation<br />
closely through all its stages, <strong>MAN</strong><br />
<strong>Diesel</strong> has prepared its response<br />
to <strong>the</strong> changes well <strong>in</strong> advance<br />
and already has its solution <strong>in</strong><br />
place. “Materials Declarations are<br />
already available for all <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
Products”, Gehr<strong>in</strong>g confirms.<br />
“In this way, as with our early avail-<br />
ability of eng<strong>in</strong>es comply<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
emissions legislation, we aim to<br />
give our customers clear future<br />
perspectives,” Gehr<strong>in</strong>g states. “In<br />
fact, due to strict safety at work<br />
regulations <strong>in</strong> Europe, our eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
conta<strong>in</strong> only m<strong>in</strong>or proportions of<br />
<strong>the</strong> hazardous substances listed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> IMO convention,” Gehr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
states. “And <strong>in</strong> any case, similar<br />
declarations are already requested<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> “Green Passport” schemes<br />
that is run by <strong>the</strong> Classification Societies,”<br />
he adds.<br />
Essentially, <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> has<br />
adopted a delegated approach<br />
which obliges its suppliers to make<br />
parallel declarations. The obligation<br />
to declare potentially hazardous<br />
substances is now firmly enshr<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>in</strong> our contracts with our<br />
suppliers and our Conditions of<br />
Purchase. To ensure compliance,<br />
we have contacted our suppliers<br />
and ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed what substances<br />

<strong>the</strong>y use. The materials identified<br />
are, as stated, <strong>in</strong> very small<br />
amounts – lead <strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs, lead<br />
oxide <strong>in</strong> gaskets and mercury <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>rmometers. Under our revised<br />
conditions and our quality guidel<strong>in</strong>es,<br />
suppliers issue <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
with <strong>the</strong>ir own Material Declarations,<br />
and are obliged to <strong>in</strong>form us<br />
immediately of proposed changes<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir manufactur<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />
Parallel to identification and documentation<br />
of hazardous substances,<br />
we have <strong>in</strong>vestigated how<br />
to reduce or even elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong>se<br />
substances from our products. As<br />
a start, lead-oxide-free gaskets<br />
have been <strong>in</strong>tensively tested. Most<br />
of <strong>the</strong> gaskets so far conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
lead oxides have been substituted<br />
with lead-free components with<br />
<strong>the</strong> same or even better performance.<br />
The rema<strong>in</strong>der will follow<br />
shortly, when performance test<strong>in</strong>g<br />
is f<strong>in</strong>ally concluded.<br />
Ship recycl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past has not effectively dealt with hazardous materials from ships. IMO legislation places <strong>the</strong> onus on ship builders and suppliers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>e builders and designers, <strong>in</strong> demand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that all ship components m<strong>in</strong>imise or, where possible, completely elim<strong>in</strong>ate harmful substances. <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> has already <strong>in</strong>troduced material declarations to comply with this legislation

Solid Foundation for African Venture<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> plays central role <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g 35-MW cogeneration plant<br />
With <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> as ma<strong>in</strong> supplier,<br />
Ingemas, <strong>the</strong> Spanish eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
company and a member of <strong>the</strong> TSK<br />
Group, has developed a turnkey power-plant<br />
project for <strong>the</strong> “Les Ciments<br />
du Sahel S.A.” (CDS) cement plant,<br />
an <strong>in</strong>vestment of EURO 29,500,000.<br />
CDS has been located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Kiréne region of Senegal, Western<br />
Africa s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000. The plant<br />
lies some 70 km to <strong>the</strong> south of<br />
<strong>the</strong> capital, Dakar, and has an<br />
output of 35 MW from four <strong>MAN</strong><br />
18V32/40 eng<strong>in</strong>es (each 9 MW m or<br />
8.75 MW e ) at 750 rpm. The HFO<br />
-burn<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>es will cover <strong>the</strong> current<br />
and future power demands of<br />
<strong>the</strong> cement plant. Additionally, <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>stallation of four boilers for ex-<br />
haust-gas heat recovery will cover<br />
<strong>the</strong> steam requirements for both<br />
<strong>the</strong> power plant and <strong>the</strong> cementproduction<br />
process.<br />
The cement plant orig<strong>in</strong>ally began<br />
production <strong>in</strong> 2002 and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />
of <strong>the</strong> <strong>MAN</strong> four-stroke<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es ties <strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />
of a second production l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
at <strong>the</strong> CDS plant, due to start up<br />
this year. This will facilitate an <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
<strong>in</strong> cement production from<br />
600,000 to 3,000,000 tonnes per<br />
year. The four <strong>MAN</strong> four-stroke<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es replace 16 non-<strong>MAN</strong><br />
gensets and will cut 55% off exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
electricity tariffs. The fourth<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e will be delivered for prelim<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g over dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> second<br />
quarter of 2010.<br />

Founded <strong>in</strong> 1979, Ingemas is an<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and project-management<br />
company with <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> a<br />
broad range of segments offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrated technical services<br />
from consultancy and design to<br />
<strong>the</strong> construction and start-up of<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustrial plants.<br />
The power plant<br />
The power plant is designed to work<br />
24/7 without <strong>in</strong>terruption. The plant<br />
is <strong>the</strong> cement plant’s sole power<br />
source and cont<strong>in</strong>uous power and<br />
availability are accord<strong>in</strong>gly paramount.<br />
The power plant works <strong>in</strong><br />
island mode, both <strong>in</strong> isochronous<br />
and drop modes as well as through<br />
power control.<br />
The 4th Shipdex Conference took<br />
place at <strong>the</strong> <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> PrimeServ<br />
Academy <strong>in</strong> Augsburg, Germany on<br />
16 February, where <strong>the</strong> Shipdex protocol<br />
was declared ready and available<br />
for use.<br />
Shipdex (Ship Data Exchange) is<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess rules-based<br />
and fully compliant with S1000D,<br />
developed to standardise <strong>the</strong> exchange<br />

“jet assist” devices are fitted externally<br />

The purpose of <strong>the</strong> Augsburg<br />

new power-plant’s control and<br />
monitor<strong>in</strong>g system with <strong>the</strong> aid of<br />
Kuhse, <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g manufacturer<br />
of process controls for comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
heat and power plants and emergency<br />

The system works by means of<br />
network peripherals placed about<br />

This is passed on to five PLCs<br />

genesis and logistics of <strong>the</strong> High-<br />
Speed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit, <strong>the</strong> benefits it<br />
will br<strong>in</strong>g about for <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> and<br />
what it hopes to achieve <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> immediate<br />

How did <strong>the</strong> idea of launch<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a High-Speed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit at<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> come about?<br />
Arnd Löttgen (AL): A downward<br />
expansion of <strong>the</strong> <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
portfolio has been under consideration<br />
for some time now. Given<br />
<strong>the</strong> high market share <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
product programme – that<br />
is for low- and medium-speed<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es – we can assume <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will be fur<strong>the</strong>r growth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> highspeed<br />
sector <strong>in</strong> particular. Based<br />
on <strong>the</strong> strategic correspondence<br />
and expected synergies, this <strong>MAN</strong><br />
Nutzfahrzeuge bus<strong>in</strong>ess has been<br />
transferred to <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>.<br />
Which market segments does<br />
<strong>the</strong> High-Speed BU cover?<br />
AL: In future, diesel and gas eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
from <strong>the</strong> High-Speed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Unit will be power<strong>in</strong>g yachts,<br />
small work boats, locomotives and<br />
decentralised power supply plants.<br />
The output range lies between 70<br />
and 1,400 kW. So we are under<br />
way <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e and <strong>the</strong><br />
power sector.<br />
How many employees will be<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your bus<strong>in</strong>ess unit?<br />
AL: Just under 100 employees<br />
have been transferred from <strong>MAN</strong><br />
Nutzfahrzeuge Development and<br />
Sales to <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong>. They did<br />
not f<strong>in</strong>d it a big change, because<br />
high-speed product development<br />
and <strong>the</strong> central sales and service<br />

locations is already work<strong>in</strong>g well.<br />
The eng<strong>in</strong>es which were orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />
developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> commercial vehicles<br />
sector are still produced <strong>in</strong> Nuremberg<br />
as a <strong>MAN</strong> Nutzfahrzeuge<br />
service. There will be no transfer of<br />
staff <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production area.<br />
What are <strong>the</strong> advantages of rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Nuremberg?<br />
AL: Nuremberg will be operated<br />
jo<strong>in</strong>tly by <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> and <strong>MAN</strong><br />
Nutzfahrzeuge. The High-Speed<br />
Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit may be located at<br />
Nuremberg, but it is an <strong>in</strong>tegral<br />
part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> operational<br />
organisation, so functions are also<br />
located <strong>in</strong> Augsburg. Besides, Nuremberg<br />
is also <strong>the</strong> central location<br />
for development and production of<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es for <strong>MAN</strong> Nutzfahrzeuge <strong>in</strong><br />
this output area. Decades of experi-<br />
dex as additional proof of <strong>the</strong> positive<br />
moves <strong>the</strong> shipp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
is mak<strong>in</strong>g towards self-regulation<br />
and improved governance. Inter-<br />
Manager is <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> discuss<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> project fur<strong>the</strong>r and check<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest of its members <strong>in</strong><br />
such a standardisation <strong>in</strong>itiative.”<br />

What about customer care?<br />
AL: To ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> good care of<br />
high-speed customers <strong>in</strong> worldwide<br />
sales and service, <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
will be tak<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> cooperation<br />
with <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g sales and<br />
service partners and expand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
it fur<strong>the</strong>r with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework of<br />
<strong>the</strong> PrimeServ strategy. In this way<br />
we can develop extra growth potential<br />
by conceptually and operatively<br />
comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>MAN</strong><br />
<strong>Diesel</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
high-speed activities, for example,<br />

What positive effects do you expect<br />
to see at <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> from<br />

AL: When <strong>the</strong> High-Speed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Unit moves <strong>in</strong>to <strong>MAN</strong> Die-<br />

focal po<strong>in</strong>ts of know-how on turbochargers,<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>es very well with <strong>the</strong> Nuremberg<br />
experience <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
high-speed and low-emission<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es and produc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m costeffectively<br />
<strong>in</strong> large numbers. S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
<strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t projects started <strong>in</strong> 2009,<br />
we have already seen that <strong>the</strong><br />
exchange of exist<strong>in</strong>g knowledge<br />
works well, and that <strong>the</strong> company<br />
cultures at Nuremberg and Augsburg<br />
are well-matched too.<br />

How is <strong>the</strong> economic crisis affect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> high-speed bus<strong>in</strong>ess?<br />
AL: Of course, <strong>the</strong> high-speed<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e bus<strong>in</strong>ess has also been affected<br />
by <strong>the</strong> crisis. Our customers’<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial situation is stra<strong>in</strong>ed. It is<br />
particularly important <strong>the</strong>refore to<br />
ensure that orders are f<strong>in</strong>anced.<br />
Close contact with both customers<br />
and suppliers is essential.<br />
What goals will you be pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g year?<br />
AL: Launch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> High-Speed<br />
Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit is a major strategic<br />
decision. However, it also comes<br />
at <strong>the</strong> same time as <strong>the</strong> most extensive<br />
economic crisis <strong>in</strong> decades.<br />
Because of this, <strong>the</strong> work <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> High-Speed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit <strong>in</strong><br />
2010 will not only be characterised<br />
by design for <strong>the</strong> future and expand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> high-speed bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />
but also by operative management<br />
of <strong>the</strong> crisis-related problems our<br />
customers, suppliers and our own<br />
organisation are experienc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Arnd Löttgen is <strong>in</strong> charge of <strong>the</strong><br />
transfer of high-speed bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
from <strong>MAN</strong> Nutzfahrzeuge to<br />
<strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> & <strong>Turbo</strong>, and will<br />
also head <strong>the</strong> new bus<strong>in</strong>ess unit.<br />
He has worked for <strong>MAN</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
1980. In 2002 he took <strong>the</strong> leadership<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>es Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Nuremberg, and was responsible<br />

In <strong>the</strong> hour of need, <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong><br />
PrimeServ sprang <strong>in</strong>to action. Over<br />
Christmas and <strong>the</strong> first few weeks<br />
of <strong>the</strong> new year, PrimeServ swiftly<br />
carried out a repair job <strong>in</strong> Denmark<br />
to put Dutch conta<strong>in</strong>er feeder-vessel<br />
M/V “Pride of Sneek” back <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
on its regular route between <strong>the</strong><br />
Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands and <strong>the</strong> UK.<br />
The story started <strong>in</strong> December<br />
when <strong>the</strong> 11-year old conta<strong>in</strong>er<br />
vessel suffered major damage to<br />
its <strong>MAN</strong> <strong>Diesel</strong> 12V28/32A ma<strong>in</strong><br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e. The break-down happened<br />
off Imm<strong>in</strong>gham, which<br />
forms one po<strong>in</strong>t of <strong>the</strong> vessel’s triangle-service<br />
between <strong>the</strong> Dutch<br />
<strong>in</strong>land waterways and <strong>the</strong> English<br />
west-coast harbours of Imm<strong>in</strong>gham<br />
and Blyth.<br />
Close <strong>in</strong>vestigation revealed <strong>the</strong><br />
extent of <strong>the</strong> necessary repairs to<br />
owner, Douwe Visser, and his <strong>in</strong>surance<br />
company who accord<strong>in</strong>gly<br />
rang <strong>the</strong> PrimeServ service hotl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
An immediate exchange of facts<br />
and photos led to PrimeServ issu<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a quick quotation and specification<br />
to <strong>the</strong> owner. After evaluation<br />
of <strong>the</strong> repair options available<br />
and <strong>the</strong> different time-scales on<br />
offer, <strong>the</strong> Pride of Sneek chose<br />

<strong>the</strong> vessel already on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Monday. With that, it has to be<br />
noted that my eng<strong>in</strong>e crew had<br />
done some dismantl<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
towage to Frederikshavn. And now<br />
we could leave 5½ weeks after,<br />
and earlier than orig<strong>in</strong>ally promised<br />
<strong>in</strong> spite of co<strong>in</strong>cid<strong>in</strong>g with Christmas<br />
and New Year celebrations”.<br />
