one to another that creates something.”
MESSAGES FROM THE PRESIDENT & DIRECTOR
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Throughout the Junior League of Baltimore’s 95 year history,
our organization has changed the lives of the women who
have been our members, enhanced the lives of the recipients
of our community programs, and elevated the communities
in which we volunteer.
This year, in particular, our organization has embraced the
opportunity to change. We established new fundraisers and
through our strategic planning process created a new framework
for our future fundraising efforts.
In our community we launched the new School Parental
Engagement Program and transitioned our Women’s Mentoring
Program into an internship at our Wise Penny thrift store. In the
area of technology we researched and contracted our new
website and database. This change will allow the organization
to communicate more effectively to both prospective and
current active and sustaining members, and to build capacity
for future needs.
Finally, we broke ground and started construction on our
Building Opportunities Project which encompasses the renovation
of our Wise Penny Thrift Store and addition of a second
floor Headquarters and Community space. This new building will
create further potential for change by expanding our capacity
for membership, leadership development, and programming.
Looking back, 2007-2008 was a time of transition, and the
decisions we made during the time will move the League
forward to meet our strategic vision of “a group of dedicated
and invested women headquartered in Govans who are recognized
and respected for collectively making a positive impact
in Baltimore through volunteerism and civic leadership.”
Thank you to all of our members, community partners, and
donors for helping us achieve our vision and make it a reality!
Best,
Megan Tahboub, President, 2007-2008
DIRECTOR’S LETTER
This past year, the Junior League of Baltimore reflected upon
and celebrated our long and proud history of service to Baltimore.
While honoring our past, we challenge ourselves to
strike a balance between preserving tradition and adjusting
to our ever-changing world to reach our fullest potential.
Our members give this organization its power to serve our
communities. It is through their leadership and development
that we continue to grow our impact to the community. By
investing in each member, we are creating civic leaders for
Baltimore, both in and out of our organization. But this work
cannot be done alone. To continue to strengthen our impact,
we need to not only invest within our membership, but to
continue to build strong collaborations outside of it. This
past year marked many new and strengthened partnerships.
We continued our work with the Allstate Foundation in
support of our Women’s Mentoring Program / Wise Penny
Internship. We welcomed new partners for our Kids in the
Kitchen Program, including Kaiser Permanente, Trader Joe’s
and the Ravens Foundation, while continuing our partnership
with Port Discovery. Our Health Fair was augmented by
the support of sponsor MedStar Health and Union Memorial
Hospital. Our Boutique Warehouse Sale has generated tens
of new partners in local boutique owners for this growing
fundraiser and to support our Wise Penny Store year-round.
Lastly, the overwhelming support that the Junior League of
Baltimore has received for our Building Opportunities Project
enables us to secure our future with a facility to continue to
train new civic leaders and proudly serve our community and
to reach our potential through change.
Thank you for your support,
SCHOOL PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM
In an effort to address the critical issue of low parental
engagement in the Baltimore City Public School System,
the Junior League of Baltimore launched the School
Parental Engagement Program at Govans Elementary
School in the Fall of 2007.
Over the course of the year, the Junior League of Baltimore
worked directly with parents and teachers to strengthen the
parent teacher organization (pto), elect its first officers, and
lead pto meetings. Working with Verizon, we hosted a uniform
and school supplies drive, collecting more than 40 uniforms
and 30 knapsacks.
The Junior League of Baltimore held a teacher appreciation
week that engaged teachers in our efforts at the start
of the school year, knowing that the teachers are the
strongest advocates for parental engagement. The outreach
was well-received, with several teachers remarking on how
valued they felt. Throughout the school year, the committee
led workshops for children on Safety, including visits from
the local firehouse, Health and Hygiene, through a visit from
a local dental hygienist, and Financial Literacy, through Port
Discovery’s traveling Money Game Road Show. Along with
each workshop, students were given takeaway materials to
apply their knowledge in the home and introduce the School
Parental Engagement Program to parents.
MENTORING AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS
The Junior League of Baltimore’s Women’s Mentoring
Program was proud to graduate 10 participants this past
year, all of whom were enrolled in services at Waverly
Family Support Center. Each participant successfully
completed our intense, 9-month mentoring program,
attending two sessions a month focused in job readiness
and life skills. Through mentoring and support, and hard
work, six passed their Graduate Equivalency Diploma (ged)
and six secured jobs! These women’s lives have been
transformed through their participation in this program,
directly due to the generosity of the Allstate Foundation.
Last year, the Junior League of Baltimore also dedicated
much time to the development and implementation of the
Wise Penny Internship Program, a new component of the
Women’s Mentoring program. Many of the women who are
participants in our program have never been employed. The
creation of a 12-week Internship at the Junior League of
NEARLY ONE-THIRD OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN
NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA WILL BE OVERWEIGHT BY 2010.
THE INTERNATIONAL OBESITY TASK FORCE
KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
The Junior League of Baltimore held our 3rd annual Kids in
the Kitchen event at Port Discovery in March of 2008. Kids
in the Kitchen is part of an International initiative led by the
Association of Junior Leagues International (ajli). The goal
of the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative is to
empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help
reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated
health issues. Over 255 Leagues in Canada, Mexico, the
United Kingdom and the United States conducted the Junior
Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen program in their communities
in 2007. The Junior League of Baltimore’s local event
in 2007 reached approximately 1,700 attendees of Port
Discovery, including the children that the Junior League
of Baltimore brought from our program and partner sites,
Govans Elementary School, the Hampden Family Center
and Hampden Elementary School.
Baltimore’s Wise Penny Thrift Store provides these women
with transferable retail experience, coaching in appropriate
work behaviors, and a professional reference to strengthen
their position for future employment. Additionally the Junior
League of Baltimore volunteer mentor assigned to each
Intern will continue to provide assistance and resources for
resume writing, interviewing, and job searches.
This year, we developed the program’s application process,
including submission of a resume, essay, and interview,
assisted five women in completing the process, and selected
two women for the first 12-week Internship, which began in
the summer of 2008. Two additional Internships will be
available in the fall of 2008 and again in the spring of 2009.
This program is made possible to the generous support
from the Allstate Foundation.
The day imparted a lot of information to participants
and was even more fun! Trader Joe’s led children in
making “fruit sushi” and “creative crepes”. Coach Tom
from the Ravens Youth Program, along with Ravens
running back, Musa Smith, ran football drills with children.
Students from the Goucher College Dance program
led children in interpretative dance and the Baltimore
Blast led soccer drills on Port Discovery’s mini soccer
field. Event lead sponsor Kaiser Permanente, offered an
interactive computer game station, entitled the Amazing
Food Detective.
Together, we set a wonderful example of how to have
healthy and active lives and work together to combat
childhood obesity.

THE LARKS
The Junior League of Baltimore’s longest running community
program, the Larks, continued to bring the gift of song to
residents in adult care facilities in Baltimore, reaching more
than 1,000 people. Also, this year, the Larks were featured on
WJZ’s Manic Monday, performing the song “Manic Monday” in
the heart of Fells Point at 6 am! The Junior League of Baltimore
believes strongly in the power of music to promote health
and well-being. This year, a daughter of a Larks audience
member called the Larks the evening of the performance to
share that her mother, suffering from depression, called to
share that she “was happier than she has heard her in two
years – almost joyful” and that the “caroling was beautiful
and made her feel so ‘Christmasy’”.
“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and
HEALTH FAIR AND HOLIDAY PARTY
This year our new member class was assigned with our
programming at the Hampden Family Center, including our
annual Health Fair and Holiday Party. The Junior League
of Baltimore has been proud to support this center for over
13 years, beginning as a founding organization in 1995.
The Holiday Party provided more than 150 children with
a fun-filled afternoon, including delicious food, caroling by
our very own Larks, a jolly Santa, and arts and crafts. Children
made gingerbread houses, stockings, and read stories
with the Ravens’ cheerleaders. This event also provides gifts
to the families of Hampden who are in need.
1 2
The Health Fair brings access to basic health services
and screenings to this community on an annual basis. With
MedStar Health as our lead sponsor, Union Memorial
Hospital led health stations on blood pressure, cholesterol,
and diabetes, among many more. Other complementary
health stations included governmental programs and local
nonprofits. While adults participated in health stations,
children were treated to interactive nutrition and fitness
stations, and a puppet show discussing healthy lifestyles.
THE POTENTIAL OF WOMEN
TRAINING WOMEN TO CHANGE THE COMMUNITY
Throughout each year, members are given training opportunities
to develop their personal potential as leaders, along with
service-learning opportunities within their committee placement.
In addition to trainings offered to members within our
organization, this year the Junior League of Baltimore was able
to send three of our members to an ajli sponsored Organizational
Development Institute (odi) in Louisville, Kentucky. This
series of meetings are held four times a year hosted by ajli
and are designed to provide League Leaders with fundamental
Mission-based training in the areas of Community
Impact, Leadership Development, and Organizational
Capacity Building development. We were also able to send
five members to the ajli sponsored Mid-Atlantic conference
in Annapolis which focuses on issues relating to the MidAtalntic
Junior Leagues. Additionally, our President and President
Elect participated in four conferences in Boston, St. Paul,
San Antonio and San Diego, where they learned critical
leadership skills to govern the Junior League of Baltimore.
ANNUAL DINNER
The service that our members provide to our community and
their leadership development is recognized each May at our
Annual Dinner. This event provides the organization with the
opportunity to recognize our members and community partners
who have done outstanding work in our shared communities.
Highlights from some of the awards are listed below:
The Mary Goodwillie Award, which goes to an active
member providing outstanding leadership and service, went
to Board member Ginger Mihalik. Ginger led her Projects,
Advocacy, and Research committee in the research and
WOMEN & LEADERSHIP
3 4
creation of a multi-year financial plan for the organization.
She also volunteered to assist with the Boutique Warehouse
Sale, an event she helped to create the previous year.
Ginger is an effortless leader that inspires others to eagerly
follow and be the best that they can be.
The Annapolis Bowl Award, which goes to an active member
demonstrating community service outside the Junior League
of Baltimore, went to Elizabeth Aneckstein. Elizabeth’s volunteer
work for the Govanstowne Business Association, Women
Entrepreneurs of Baltimore, Baltimore City Downtown Partnership,
and the dearest to her heart, the Enoch Pratt Free
Library, makes us all wonder how many hours she has in
her day!
Past Presidents Anne Johnson and Carol Goodman were
given the Sustainer Spirit Award for their continued leadership
in our organization. Anne volunteered to Chair our Celebrate
95 Gala the year after her Presidency to continue building the
bridges to our sustainers, past members, and donors. As part
of her continued work Co-Chairing our Building Opportunities
Project, Carol Goodman led efforts in Annapolis this past year,
lobbying for a State Bond Bill (we were successful once again!).
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNER
As part of our mission of promoting voluntarism, the Junior
League of Baltimore annual awards a high school senior who
has provided outstanding community service with a $1,000
scholarship. This year’s awardee was Elisabet K. Tassis, who
will be entering Johns Hopkins University in the fall of 2008.
In Elisabet’s words, “It is an honor to be recngnized for my
hard work by such a respectful and successful organization…it
is a motivating factor for me to continue to help
others in need and strive for excellence.”
FUNDRAISING
T H E P OT E N T I A L O F C H A N G E
A key accomplishment of the Junior League of Baltimore’s
Projects, Advocacy, and Research (par) Committee was the
research and development of a comprehensive funding plan
for the Junior League of Baltimore. The plan moves away
from gala or event-based fundraising and lays the roadmap
towards a more diversified portfolio of funding, including
allocating increased resources to our Wise Penny Thrift Store
and related special sales, including our semi-annual Boutique
Warehouse Sale. The Wise Penny, our social enterprise for
over 50 years, has in its history netted $2.3 million for Junior
League of Baltimore programs and initiatives.
BOUTIQUE WAREHOUSE SALES
During 2006-2007, the Junior League of Baltimore introduced
a new fundraiser, the semi-annual Boutique Warehouse
sale. The approach was simple – persuade area
boutiques to lend us their end of season or clearance
merchandise, we would sell it for them in a 2-day special
sale, and we would share the proceeds. The first year, the
two sales resulting in gross sales of almost $60,000 and
attracted a large following, with boutiques and shoppers
clamoring for information on the next sale and how they
could participate.
This past fiscal year the Boutique Warehouse Sales grew
in size and in profit, with the fall 2007 sale generating a
gross of over $50,000 and spring sale generating a gross of
over $75,000. Not only does this excellent fundraiser secure
revenue for our operating budget, it also raises awareness
and interest in the community for both our Wise Penny Thrift
Store and the Junior League of Baltimore.
Finally, the Boutique Warehouse Sales offer a wonderful
training opportunity to the committee members in areas
including solicitations, public relations, marketing, event
planning and volunteer management.
CELEBRATE 95
Our Celebrate 95 Gala was a huge success, bringing
together members, partners, and supporters to raise close
to $75,000 for current programs and initiatives of the
Junior League of Baltimore. We were proud to honor the
civic leadership and community impact our organization
has made over the past 95 years, with special recognition
for our Honorees, Sally Michel, Barbara J. Bonnell, and
Mary DeKuyper. The event featured video vignettes with
each honoree, sharing thoughts on their League experiences
and the power of voluntarism. Their legacy was
perhaps best stated by Sally Michel, who said “… what we
keep, we lose and only what we give remains our own.”
Celebrate 95 gave us the opportunity to rekindle our
spirit, reconnect with our past, and reflect on 95 years of
service to the Baltimore Community.
BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES
FUNDRAISING & GROWTH
“One change makes way
for the next, giving us the opportunity to grow.”
VIVIAN BUCHEN
This fiscal year the Building Opportunities project broke
ground on construction! This project will provide necessary
renovations to the Wise Penny Thrift Store and a second
story addition to house offices, volunteer training and
community projects. Past Presidents and project Co-Chairs
Maria Johnson and Carol Goodman continued weekly work
with the construction team, representing the organization,
along with the Junior League of Baltimore President, to
track progress against goals and the budget. Completion of
the project and occupancy is expected in winter of 2008.
To support this project, the Headquarters Committee
1
3
continued fundraising efforts toward the $1.3 million
campaign goal. Members successfully lobbied in Annapolis
for a second Bond Bill, resulting in $100,000 for the
project. Addional monies were raised through membership,
private foundations and local community grants!
Preparing for occupancy of our new space, the par
Committee also spent time exploring ways to increase
our community impact and build visibility, leveraging our
soon to be completed headquarters space. Early research
has pointed toward using this space as a training facility
for area community organizations.
