DEEP SEA FISHING 2010

DEEP-SEA FISHING 2010 - Pg 2
WELCOME
Norway. What other sea fishing destination
offers the sport fisherman such an outstanding
chance to catch a personal best cod or halibut? The
Norwegian rod caught cod record has recently been
broken with a fish of 41kgs (approx 90lbs)! You’ll have
to be lucky and skillful to beat this but many specimens
in excess of 50 lbs are caught each season. Halibut are
common in the 10 to 50 lbs class with the 200 to 400lbs
heavyweights usually appearing in the late summer
and into autumn. Big coalfish arrive inshore all along
the rugged coastline from Trondheim to Tromsø in
late summer too. Add in pollack, hake, monkfish,
ling, mackerel, redfish, wolf fish, tusk and some shark
species and you have fishing from both boat and shore
that is absolutely world class.
Unlike most of the world’s fishing grounds Norwegian
waters receive relatively little commercial pressure and
with favourable conditions provided by the Gulf Stream
stocks of many species are actually on the increase.
Sea fishing can be enjoyed all year round. During
balmy summers inside the Arctic Circle the sun never
dips below the horizon. This is the famous Midnight
Sun and it offers a unique fishing experience as
plankton rise to the surface attracting huge shoals of
baitfish and then the inevitable predators. Even in the
far north it’s possible to enjoy some of the best sport
in winter because the sea never freezes due to the
influence of the Gulf Stream.
As every experienced fisherman knows there’s
no substitute for local knowledge. Fortunately,
Norwegians have fishing in their blood and wherever
you go you’ll find guides who can call on generations
of watercraft and experience, as well as the most
modern technology, to put you on the fish! You
can contact many of them as well as arrange
accommodation and boat hire or book charters using
the information provided in this leaflet.
The climate along the Norwegian coast is heavily influenced
by the Gulf Stream, resulting in mild winters, though at times
thermals are essential. Conditions at sea can change quickly
so come prepared for everything! Many operators do provide
specialist fishing suits but do check before travelling. The
average temperature in Oslo in July is 19.3 degrees, but
the mercury often rises to above 25 degrees even in North
Norway. The midnight sun occurs from the end of May to the
beginning of August within the Arctic Circle and even in the
south of Norway it doesn’t really get dark in the summer.
TROMSØ
HAMMERFEST
Fishing
Deep-sea fishing does not require a permit. An individual
is allowed to take 15 kg of sea fish that they have caught
themselves out of Norway. Certain fish, including cod,
haddock and coley, caught and kept by anglers have to
comply with minimum dimensions. These dimensions
can be found at lovdata.no or can be supplied by your tour
operator. Garages and supermarkets generally sell pirks
and other essential items of tackle. Some fishing centres
also have small tackle shops. Charter operators can
generally provide all necessary tackle if you prefer not to
bring your own.
Money and Credit Cards
The Norwegian Currency is the Krone. Exchange rate at
the time of printing is £1 =9.4 NOK. Norwegian and foreign
currency to a value of NOK 25,000 may be brought into
Norway. Traveller’s cheques are unlimited. Credit cards are
accepted in most places. Most ATMs allow the withdrawal
of money with bank and credit cards.
Driving in Norway
In Norway, you have to drive with dipped headlights
permanently on. The speed limit is 80 km/h on country
roads and 50 km/h in built-up areas. The drink drive limit
is 0.2% alcohol. Many fishing centres provide the option of
private transfers from the nearest airport.
Duty-Free Allowances
Two litres of beer, one litre of spirits (maximum 60%) and
1½ litres wine (maximum 22%) or 5 litres of beer. You may
import 200 cigarettes or 250g tobacco and 200 cigarette
papers. Age limit for importing spirits is 20, whilst you have
to be 18 years old to import wine, beer and tobacco.
