COUNCIL BUDGET 2010/2011 This year’s budget focuses on improving community safety, renewing community infrastructure assets and reducing inherited debt. The revenue collected through rates goes directly into improving services and community infrastructure across the City of Maribyrnong. 6 Yarraville Community Centre was redeveloped as part of Council’s 2009/2010 Budget. BUDGET SNAPSHOT: • Council’s total Budget for 2010/2011 is $93.126 million, of which $61.024 million is funded through residential, industrial and commercial rates. • Pensioner rebate of $69 - one of few councils to off er it. • 2010/2011 rates increase: 5.9 per cent (3.9 per cent CPI and external impacts, 2 per cent Sustainability and Community Infrastructure Fund). • The total amount spent on improving community assets and infrastructure in this year’s budget is $19.525m – with 83.74 per cent of this funded through rates. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2010/2011 BUDGET $19.525m for improving community assets and infrastructure, including: ■ $720,000 for work on Braybrook’s Community and Sports Hub. ■ $4 million for the improvement of roads across the City. ■ $960,000 for the repair of footpaths across the City, including DDA compliance. ■ $400,000 for the ongoing repair and maintenance of drains across the City. ■ $100,000 for the improvement of laneways across the City. ■ $320,000 for the Cross Street off-road shared pathway. ■ $35,000 for sports ground turf renewal. Social, environmental and economic services, including ■ $75,000 to begin work on the Geelong Road Avenue of Honour restoration and relocation. ■ Completing the integrated child care hub at Clare Court. ■ $1.1 million for increased security measures in Footscray’s CBD, including CCTV cameras. ■ $68,000 to implement actions from Council’s public drinking strategy. ■ An increase in the pensioner rates rebate by 5.9 per cent to $69 – Maribyrnong is only one of fi ve councils that offer this rebate, in addition to the State Government rebate. ■ Reduce inherited debt by $4.152 million to under $10 million. ■ $50,000 increase for Arts and Culture programs. ■ $112,000 for graffi ti removal. ■ $63,000 for a breastfeeding service for new mums. ■ An additional $25,000 for community grants funding. ■ $150,000 in resources for festivals in the City. The Sustainability and Community Infrastructure Fund is funded through 2 per cent of the rates increase, and will help fund: ■ $44,000 for the upgrade of the Angliss senior citizens centre. ■ $60,000 to improve on and off-road bike paths. ■ $100,000 for the Edgewater playground. ■ $178,000 to improve the playground and building at the Norfolk St Child Care Centre. ■ $70,000 to upgrade and renew the playground in Cranwell Reserve. ■ $60,000 for the upgrade of six free public tennis courts across the City. ■ $100,000 for increased pruning and maintenance of trees in City parks. ■ $265,000 for the refurbishment of Yarraville pavilion . ■ $250,000 for improvements to Footscray Park.
