Judy Duffy Has Died

Issue 303 - Our Own News - October 2008
This is s tragic loss of an exceptional person. She has been
fighting the pain of cancer for a long time but in the end it beat
her, despite her determination to overcome this vile disease. For
the past 17 years her life and home and that of her partner,
Cody, had revolved around the well being of more than 700
orphans. If anyone had run over or found dead on the road a
kangaroo, wallaby and there was a baby within the pouch, this
orphan was taken to Judy. She had pouches and nappies and the
latest arrival was carried around in its pouch as she went about
her daily chores. The house and yard are surrounded by a fence
so the recovering animals wandered round comfortably with
their two dogs. All were reassured by the tranquility that
pervades.
Cody goes out to work as they are not funded by any
organisation. Judy raised funds by giving talks on caring for native
animals – at Landcare, schools, workshops and took a joey to the
recent Blessing of the Animals.
Judy was born in Tasmania in 1943 but when 7 was placed in an
orphanage with two siblings, though when old enough she left to
start her own life in Sydney. She was briefly married and then
divorced having had two children. Later she had a daughter to
whom she was the perfect mother and grandmother. It was with
her, the son from a previous earlier marriage and Cody that she
spent the last weeks of her life before the final visit to the
hospital. In 1991 Judy discovered Wollombi and all those within
it. Amoung her many talents Judy was extraordinarily proficient
at crochet work. Judy and three kangaroos were used in a
billboard poster to advertise the Sydney Olympics and likewise
Ansett once featured her. She was Aussie through and through
with a heart of gold, a wicked wit and was a wonderful friend.
Judy will be sadly missed by all who knew her and our thoughts,
love and sympathy go out to her family.
