SE NON E VERO, E MOLTO BEN TROVATO Issue 317 - December 2009
And the rain came tumbling down...
but, the spirit remained! On Sunday
everyone got wet (a few times), and
flooded, but what fun we had over the 2
days of the farmers market, stalls and Fair.
The markets on Saturday and Sunday were a great success and an opportunity for
Wollombi Valley locals to display their wares in a wonderful atmosphere. There
was an excellent variety of stalls with food, wine, wood artifacts, fresh produce,
books, handicrafts, and lots of other interesting little ‘knick knacks’.
Few were walking around the Village on Saturday and not carrying a big bunch of
Maggie Brown’s lovely fresh garlic. Those who bought the Curve Cookbook from
Allison Plummer at her stall will put the garlic to good use.
Wollombi Valley Wine Trail vineyards all had stalls, and it was good to see three
other local vineyards also showing their wines. Justine Lemecier’s Wattagan Estate
Wines, Tony Royle’s Yanco Creek Wines, and Murray Smythe’s Finches Lane Wines
are now well appreciated by the Valley locals and the wider market.
It was also nice for our historic churches, St Johns and St Michaels, to be involved
in the Fair. Both had stalls in their grounds, with a book launch and organ recital at
St Johns on Sunday.
Although we were all a little less busy on Sunday, it was fascinating to hear the
sounds of Ian Sternbeck’s chainsaw slicing through timber at the Museum,
competing for attention with the beautiful organ recital. I think the chainsaw
finished on top. These were certainly different to sounds on Saturday from the
beautiful bagpipes of Michael Young and his merry band of pipers.
The markets were a great learning experience for all participants, and the Fair
organizing committee already have many ideas for a bigger and better Fair in 2010.
A special thank you to all those on the organising committee made up of people
from many of the numerous interest groups in the Valley. And also the Tennis Club
for allowing the markets to operate on the grass area adjacent to the club; a great
venue.
I think its ‘fair’ to say that the two day Fair with the markets, woodchop, lantern
parade, Museum open day, and many smaller activities was a wonderful community
event.
SCULPTURE IN THE VINEYARDS: Nov – Jan 31
What a wonderful start! The Lantern Parade was a
marvellous celebration to declare 2009 Sculpture exhibition
open.
Thanks to all teachers, parents, the community and of course the
children for embracing this idea. Thanks to Phil and Felicity for
bringing it to fruition through a grant as part of the Sculpture in
the Vineyards. And thankyou to Paul Budde and Virginia Mitchell
as our official speakers. Photos: Peter Firminger and John Harrison
Sponsored by the local vineyards, this is the
7th annual exhibition and is again curated by Tara Morelos.
The artists are always so enthusiastic about displaying their
amazing collection of work in the Wollombi Valley where, to
quote Col Henry, “this is a terrific spot, the settings and
opportunities are fantastic! And love the vibes!”
Over 60 large-scale pieces are on display at Undercliff, Noyce
Bros, Village Vineyard, Wollombi Wines and Stonehurst Cedar
Creek until the end of Jan. It’s really worthwhile visiting the
Vineyards – interesting and fun for young and old, a lovely
reason for a great day out!
Issue 317 - Our Own News - December 2009
MUSEUM OPEN DAY 2009
This year the Museum Open Day was a major participant in
the Wollombi Valley Country Fair and contributed to the
Sunday 8 November 2009 activities.
Wollombi fencing contractors Ian Sternbeck, Denis
Sternbeck and Steve Marsh (pictured right), during a wet
weather break, showed us how they construct a two panel
hardwood post and rail fence. Please go and view this fence
section in the Wolombi Museum grounds as the
workmanship is truly unbelievable. The water trough and
old square post events were cancelled due to the wet
weather but Ian Sternbeck has agreed to come back next
year and show his axe skills then.
With the weather closing in Steve Spreckley (pictured on
cover) commenced his slab sawing demonstration with his
very long chainsaw and so we had an eventful hour and a half with the fence going up and slabs falling off a close grained ironbark
tree log section. The colour of the woodgrain is deep crimson red and the slabs were so accurately cut they will form an excellent
table and benches setting which we will be very proud to have as part of our timber display. The picnic table and benches will be
set behind the post and rail fence and will be completed before Christmas.
At the same time Albert Kraan, our local stonemason, was constructing out of local sandstone a three foot high bird bath. We have
one in our garden and it was a very worthwhile investment. Please contact Albert if you wish to see the finished sandstone
birdbath.
We thank these skilled local craftsmen for showing us how constructing fences, slabs and stonework is undertaken today. The same
fences, slabs and stonework have been made for many decades but in the very early days the work was harder and the hand tools
more basic.
Thank you Ian, Denis, Steve, Steve and Albert for donating your time, showing us your skills and making our Museum Open Day
successful. Lindsay Self, Wollombi Museum Convener
In last month’s OON we were strongly critical of Council’s
‘Wall of Silence’, as we termed it, in not answering our
long-outstanding questions in relation to the draft Cessnock
LEP 2009.
We have now received the answers we sought, but more
importantly, at the third community meeting convened by
Council on 12 November at Wollombi, Council staff
responded fully to all questions raised, and did so in a
manner which allowed for good two-way communication.
We left the meeting reassured of the merits of the public
exhibition process.
LEP Meeting 12 November Cessnock – Kurri Greens
Draft LEP Information Session
Cunneen’s Bridge, Paynes Crossing and & Grange Update
I realise that there is significant concern within
the community of Wollombi that works have
not yet commenced on both the replacement
of the Cunneens Bridge and the upgrading of
the road at Paynes Crossing. I would like to
assure you that this project remains the
highest priority project within the 2009/2010
capital works program for Council and my
staff are spending considerable time ensuring
that the relevant designs and studies are
completed in accordance with statutory
requirements to enable the works to proceed
as soon as access to the associated private
properties is obtain. I would like to confirm
that Council in February 2009 and again in
June 2009 confirmed that it believes that the
downstream option remains the most
appropriate location for this bridge and that
both Federal Government's Auslink and
Council's moneys are confirmed to fund these
works when they commence. I have also
reviewed the numerous studies that have been
provided and have personally been in
discussions with all three land owners affected
by works at the bridge and confirm that these
studies and discussions indicate that this
option (ie the downstream option) remains
the most appropriate location for the bridge.
CUNNEENS BRIDGE Section 87 and
Section 90 Permits from National Parks and
Wildlife (NPWS) - Council has received the
approved Section 87 permit and the Section
90 permit from the NPWS which has
provided conditions to be complied with
during the project. No other approval is
required from this Department Section 139 -
Excavation Permit Exception - Heritage
Branch - department of Planning - Council has
received the approved permit from the
Heritage Branch. No other approval is
required from this Department Roads Act
1993, Section 76 approval - Roads and Traffic
Authority (RTA)- RTA has issued an approval
regarding the construction of the bridge.
There were no objections from the RTA to
the proposed downstream bridge replacement
option Registration of Acquisition Plans -
NSW Government Land Property Information
(LPI) - Land Titles are still processing the
acquisition plans. It is my understanding that
the officers of LPI have been seeking advise
from the Lands Office regarding the current
location of the road boundary and it is
hopeful that they will make a determination
on this matter shortly. My staff and our legal
advises have been inconstant discussion with
the officers at the LPI to ensure that they have
all of the relevant information to allow the
definition of the existing boundaries to be
confirmed. It should be noted that the issue
doesn't involve the proposed boundary
however until the existing boundary is
confirmed Council cannot determine the
exact amount of private land that it will need
to acquire from all land owners. Acquisition
of Land Outside Road Reserves and
Agreements to Enter for Construction - This
process involves 3 property owners and
arrangements are in place with two of them
over the area required for acquisition and
agreements to enter their properties to begin
construction work are in place. Discussions on
agreements to enter and acquisition are
continuing with the remaining owner as we
endeavour to come to an agreement to
construct the road and bridge. Current
negotiations are independent of the
determination of the acquisition plan indicated
in 4 (above) as Council's current offers to all
land owners are not based on the exact
location of the current road boundary. Energy
Australia - Power Pole Relocation - Energy
Australia have advised that they can
commence pole replacement as soon as LPI
register the Acquisition Plan. Telstra - Cable
Replacement - Telstra have advised that they
can commence pole removal and cable cut
over to new mains laid last month as soon as
LPI register the Acquisition Plan. Bridge
Design - The final design for the bridge has
been received and final documentation tender
documents are expected within the next two
weeks This now enables the final review of
Environmental factors to be completed. Road
Design - Road design plans have now been
finalised. Final Environmental Review -
Council has completed a review of
Environmental Factors in accordance with the
Cessnock Greens Councillors
James Ryan and Chris Parker
will present information on the Draft LEP
including the E3 and RU2 Zones.
EP&Act. However this was carried out some
time ago and was focused on determining the
most appropriate option. To enable works to
proceed a review under Part 5 of the EP&A
Act is required now that all design works and
studies on the downstream alignment has
been completed. This review will be carried
out by an independent consultant and these
consultants are currently submitting proposals
to Council to complete the review. This
review when completed is the last approval
process that is required prior to council
calling tenders for the bridge works and to
allow road works to commence. Tenders for
Bridge Design. It is my intention that tenders
for the bridge construction will be called
before the end of the year to enable Council
to consider the tender submissions at it first
meeting in January 2010. The determination
of stockpile site and boundary fencing details
are being finalised and works will be issued as
soon as these are completed to enable fencing
work on those properties were agreement
has been reached to commence.
'THE GRANGE' Acquisition of Land
Outside Road Reserves and Agreements to
Enter for Construction - This process involves
2 property owners and arrangements are in
place with one of them over acquisition and
agreements to enter. Discussions on
agreements to enter and acquisition will
continue with the remaining owner are
ongoing. Registration of Acquisition Plans -
Land Property Information (LPI) -Land Titles
are still processing the acquisition plans.
Tender documentation for Bulk Earthworks -
Council is finalising the documentation for the
widening of the narrow section of Paynes
Crossing Road. Quotes will be called in the
near future. The determination of stockpile
site and boundary fencing details are being
finalised and works will be issued as soon as
these are completed to enable fencing work
on those properties were agreement has been
reached to commence
Review of Ugly Duckling
W.C. Fields said “never work with children or animals” Another
of his personally attributed quotes about children was that that
they should neither be seen nor heard from…ever again.
I’m so glad that director Cordelia Howell ignored his churlish
advice. I believe that children are our future. Teach them well
and let them lead the way. And what a future these children
have! It may not have been a picnic by any means, directing 12
children in Valley Artists’ latest production, but perhaps Cordelia
had an enjoyable time of it because children are still readily in
contact with their imaginations. That and having a wonderful
backstage crew!
I had the advantage of seeing The Ugly Duckling in the company
of small children. My “advantage”, may have been interpreted by
other audience participants as a “disadvantage”: “Where are the
ducks?” one accompanying three year old whined. However, this
Ugly Duckling, a comedy by A. A. Milne, had nothing to do with
the Hans Christian Andersen story. “When are they getting
married? I want to see the wedding.” one of the four year olds
bleated when the lights came up on the fait accompli. “Can I go
home now?” another mercifully young child cried out. Ahem.
Together, we were charmed by the performances of Hannah
Udodzik, Lauren Boxall, Harmony Forest, Ziggy Russ Hartland
and Reanna Ede in A.A.Milne’s verse-fable King Hilary and the
Beggarman. These budding actors - bursting with enthusiasm,
enjoying them selves immensely and providing Valley Artists with
a bright future – comprised a combination of new-comers to
the stage and those returning to the stage for the first time
since Valley Artists’ Wind In The Willows. As the last line of the
poem said, “Whatever fortune brings, don’t be afraid of doing
things.” Well done girls.
Proving that Valley Artists provides a creative outlet for
performers at all levels, we were crooned to by the enormously
entertaining Barbershop Boys: Tony Palfreeman; Peter McCloy;
Graham Jackson and Ray Smith. While not quite the usual 4 part
harmony expected with quartets of that nature, they were not
exactly singing in unison either. Oh, come on boys, you can take
it! I loved it.
After intermission, we were treated to an enjoyable
performance of The Ugly Duckling. I was delighted by the story
every bit as much as I was by the performers. The King (Adi
Ringma, with his wonderful comic timing and somewhat
mesmerizing grace) and the Queen (Sally Jackson, a fitting ruler
of the stage) had a hard time trying to marry off their “ugly”
daughter, Princess Camilla (not at all ugly and utterly enchanting
Rene Butterworth). Her beauty eluded all, including the ever
tactful Chancellor (delightful Alysha Noon). To meet the next
suitor, the Princess Camilla disguised herself as her maid
Dulcibella (an ideal Edna Panarotto), while Dulcibella pretended
to be Princess Camilla. Meanwhile, Prince Simon (Sam Williams,
with beguiling charisma) masqueraded himself as his servant
Carlo, and dressed Carlo (regal and charming Max Kamatsos) as
the prince. Fun ensued.
Combined with Giles tester’s creative set design and
construction, Neville Newman’s illuminating technical design and
installation, Linda Marsh’s top drawer Wardrobe design, and
countless hours put in by other backstage crew, Cordelia,
Well done Cordelia, well done children, well done barbershop
Dispatch from Laguna Public School
Things are really happening at Laguna in this very busy but
very exciting time of year.
Our students have spent time making candle-lit lanterns at
school in order to participate in the magical and atmospheric
lantern parade, conducted as part of the Wollombi Country
Fair. It was terrific to see so many parents and children on the
Saturday night, especially since it was also the closing night for
The Ugly Duckling, in which our students Sam Williams, Max
Kamatsos, Lauren Boxall, Hannah Udodzik and Harmony
Forrest performed. We are very proud of them for seeing
through their commitment in enhancing the artistic
endeavours of our community!
Presentation Night 2009 looms ever closer – it is THE
event of our school calendar. We will be farewelling our Year 6
students – Sophie Bailey, Lauren Boxall, EJ Tietie, Fergus
Pengelly, Sam Williams and Max Kamatsos – as well as awarding
prizes for outstanding achievements over the year and
providing a level of entertainment not seen since Presentation
Night 2008. It is our chance to proudly present our school to
the community, and all school families and community
members are invited to join us from 6.00pm Tuesday, 8th
December at Laguna Hall.
As sad as it to farewell our Year 6 students, we also look
forward to a new batch of Kindergarten students in 2010. We
have held 5 orientation days during the year to date, with our
final day on Friday 11th December. Students and staff alike
look forward to Katelyn, Max, Oliver, Sam, Clio, Ben, Jessica and
Lochee beginning life at Laguna PS in 2010!
We have many more events ahead on the calendar. Students
will undertake a week of swimming lessons at Kurri pool in
conjunction with Wollombi and Congewai schools. A big thank
you to Simone Smith for organising this, along with the Bike
and Tag Football days earlier this term. Our students will be
singing Christmas carols at St Marks, Laguna on the afternoon
of Tuesday 15th December, always a fun event.
At this point in the year it is appropriate to reflect on the
amazing contributions of so many people who help to make
Laguna PS the excellent school that it is. Staff, parents,
community members teach students, fund-raise, provide
specialist learning, maintain grounds and buildings, share skills
and experiences, provide support for camps and excursions,
produce newsletters and much, much more. A massive thankyou
to everyone for your efforts in 2009. Craig Howe
November Garden Group
Community news for Wollombi and surrounding districts
Issue 317 - Our Own News - December 2009
There are fairies at the bottom of Glen and Jenny Rozynski’s sixacre
property at Millfield – fairy Roses I mean, and these as well
as shrub, standard, carpet and climbing Roses, all in flower make
an absolutely stunning display. These are flowering in Lavender
hedged garden rooms, cascading over arbours, lining paths leading
to the creek, and in informal areas where Salvia, Camellias,
Foxgloves and eastern Daisies abound.
We were absolutely ‘gob-smacked’ when we crossed the rustic
bridge and were greeted by Glen and Jenny with a sumptuous
afternoon tea under a canopy of golden Robinia trees providing
welcome shade on this hot November evening.
This garden is full of trees all planted by Glen and Jenny. There
are crab Apples, Eucalypts, Oleanders, Willows and the very
beautiful acacia (Baileyana Purpurea), a quick growing purpletipped
Wattle. Two orchards are full of citrus and stone fruit.
They even have a Cherry tree. The exotic garden rooms are
interspersed with large plantings of native shrubs under which
the bowerbirds have built their nests and flashes of blue treasure
can be seen. The birds are attracted to this beautiful garden, and
while we were there Corollas, Galahs, Firetails and Finches
entertained us with their antics.
It was delightful strolling the grassy creek bank admiring the
trees, the view to the distant hills, Glen’s handmade outdoor
furniture and the colour of the flowering plants. We were always
mindful of the imagination, dedication and hard work these two
wonderful people have put into making this garden such a delight
to visit – it is certainly a ‘showpiece’ and one we hope we will be
invited to visit again. Thank you Glen and Jenny for sharing your
special place with us.
December 7 is our Christmas. We will be meeting at John and
Pam Venn’s place at 84 Sweetmans Creek Road at 5 pm. Please
bring a plate of food to share, a chair, cutlery and plates, and if
you wish a $10 unwrapped child’s gift for the Salvation Army. It
will be a great night as always – see you there. Maggie Brown
Wollombi Valley Pony Club
It was a wild & windy couple of days for our School Holidays Camp
but we all coped well with the first day only being held up for a
short time. The Endurance Ride in small groups on Day 2 proved to
be very popular & we will be developing this in the future. All riders
successfully completed the Derby & were awarded a Medallion for
their efforts with Bronte, Bailey & Clio winning the team event &
Bronte, Emma, Louisa, Summer & Molly receiving an additional prize
for placing in each individual event.
During the last month some of our riders attended the Zone 25
Camp for 6 days at Gloucester. Bronte Annis-Brown, Chloe Green,
Renee Butterworth, Summer Bolton, Molly Callaghan & Scarlett
Bolton were on their horses at 8.30am every morning & didn’t
dismount for the evening until 5.00pm every night. They did a range
of activities from Camp Drafting, Team Penning, Sporting, Jumping to
Dressage & Flat Work. A load of feisty cattle were trucked in for
the Camp Drafting & Team Penning & definitely gave the riders a
run for their money & a fun experience.
The Wollombi Support Team with our fearless leader Simone with
the help of Kerri, Di Butterworth, Di Hardin & Tanya helped saved
the day when on arrival it was acknowledged that the organisation
of instructors for Camp was less than desirable, in fact nonexistent.
In the end the riders were none the wiser & everyone
involved had a fantastic time. Of course it will take months for the
Support Team to recover (probably just in time for next year).
Molly Callaghan & Summer
Bolton competed in the
Mount Sugarloaf Show
Jumping Competition during
the month with both riders
succeeding in placing in a
number of events. A special
congratulations to Molly for
doing so well in her first D
Grade competition.
Lastly, Molly Callaghan & Bronte
Annis-Brown attended the
Central Coast Grammar
Interschool Dressage Day competing against some very high-class
combinations. As usual both girls did our Club proud, placing well &
both receiving very respectable ribbons.
Congratulations to all of the riders that went out to compete on
Wollombi Valley Chamber of Commerce News
This months’ meeting of Wollombi Chamber of Commerce was
held at Wollombi Wines. Attendance was a bit lower than
average with several regulars unable to make it but the meeting
went smoothly and most stayed after the meeting to enjoy a
chat, a bite to eat and of course a few glasses of wine.
Thank-you to Allyson and Peter Hoft for looking after us at your
lovely vineyard.
Present at the meeting was the Chamber’s newest member,
Tony ‘Told Me’ who lives in Wollombi and has recently started a
tour and transport business servicing the Wollombi Valley and
vineyards. Reports so far indicate the business is going very well
and everyone seems very pleased about the new service which
should be a great benefit to our visitors to the Valley. Welcome
Tony, we wish you great success with your new venture. Details
of Tony’s business are on his website: www.tonytoldme.com.au
Many of our members were involved in the recent Wollombi
Valley Country Fair either as an organiser or in running a stall.
Everyone agreed this first fair was a great success despite the
weather being a bit variable and would like to see the event
being held every year. Anecdotal evidence suggests that locals
and visitors alike felt it was a refreshing change to come to a fair
operated almost entirely by locals and selling our local, produce,
wine and handicrafts. The atmosphere was terrific having that
unique Wollombi Valley friendly ambience and though visitor
numbers were not large, a good weekend was had by all. The
Chamber would like to congratulate all those involved,
particularly Michael Noyce who headed the ‘steering committee’
and co-ordinated this very successful weekend.
The idea of the Country Fair first came about by a suggestion
from one of our members to ‘make a day of it’ whilst celebrating
the opening of the annual ‘Sculpture in the Vineyards’ event. A
few people thought perhaps ‘Sculpture’ had been a bit
overshadowed by the other events of the weekend so I would
like to remind everyone Sculpture in the Vineyards is now in it’s
Community news for Wollombi and surrounding districts
Issue 317 - Our Own News - December 2009
seventh year and has been very successful in bringing visitors to
the valley. Of course there are some in the community who do
not want visitors but the Chamber’s view is a moderate level of
tourism is essential to the viability of a small community like
ours as most of us are involved directly or indirectly in touristrelated
businesses to earn a living. Anyway, this year the
opening of Sculpture in the Vineyards’ was marked by a
wonderful lantern parade involving many of the local school
children and led by a very enthusiastic piper (well done Michael
Young). Credit to the organizers, the kids and their parents for
a fantastic opening ceremony.
Finally an update on other Chamber business:
We are still working on producing a short promotional video
for the Wollombi Valley using funds supplied in a state
government grant. Hopefully this will be completed in the next
couple of months.
A marketing committee meeting will be held Thursday 26th
November to reassess our marketing plan and set an agenda for
next year. All members welcome to attend.
Wollombi Valley Chamber is hosting the next Cessnock Council
Busnet Breakfast at Lavender Gate Café on Wednesday 25th
November. Guest speaker Michael Noyce will give a talk on
Wollombi, before, now and the future. This is a great
networking opportunity so please contact me or Cessnock
Council if you’d like to attend.
Next month’s meeting on Monday 14th December will be the
Chamber’s Christmas party. (Venue etc TBA). The business will
be kept to a minimum so anyone who’d like to come and join in
for a fun evening please contact me. Visitors most welcome.
Cheers for now,
Wollombi Public School wishes to send out a huge thank you to the Tidy
Towns Committee for the prize we received for our efforts in this year’s
scarecrow competition. The prize, an experience for four in the Westpac
Rescue Helicopter Service’s helicopter simulator, was an absolute thrill. We
were guided around the base and introduced to some of our local heroes,
those daring helicopter pilots. The students revelled in the opportunity to
climb in and explore the facets of a rescue helicopter and were completely
blown away by the experience of flying a simulated helicopter over the Hunter
Valley. Alessandro even managed to fly a helicopter under the Harbour Bridge,
a feat even by experienced pilots’ standards!
Again we thank the people of the Tidy Towns as well as the Rescue Helicopter
Service for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The recent Lantern Parade was a wonderful opportunity for the school to showcase its
strengths in promoting art in the classroom. The students showed enthusiasm and flair in
bringing their concept of “education into the future” to life, and showed lots of problem-solving
ability as well as creativity. Ours was truly a community effort and we thank Kes Harper, Karen
Doust, Kylie Westwood , Evelyn Bloom and Donna Gargarno for their time and efforts in
assisting the students to produce their amazing rocket. Our procession with friends and families
of the school, with the accompanying bag-pipes, down the main street of Wollombi was a
moment I will personally hold dear for a long time to come. “To Education and Beyond” indeed!
As is always the case, term 4 is buzzing along and along with our many activities and
celebrations, our young people have also been faced with all sorts of assessments to evaluate
their learning throughout the year. I am thrilled to see the growth in all of the students as
reflected in their test results. So as to avoid any sort of bias this year, the students were tested
by an independent assessor and have shone in their results, right across the curriculum. I am very
proud of them and their efforts throughout 2009.
Cricket at Laguna - Double Header Weekend
You are all invited to a big weekend of cricket on
21/22 November at the Laguna Cricket Ground.
There will be our regular 40 over competition game on Saturday
(21st) against Greta/Branxton then on Sunday (22nd) there will be
two T20 games against the Lords Taverners featuring ex Australia Test
player Bob Holland.
The Lords Taverners were originally formed by a group of artists and
cricket lovers at the Lords Tavern in London. Their charter is to
promote the game of cricket through coaching clinics, charity
matches and other fundraising activities.
Cessnock District Cricket
Round 5: Laguna vs. Railway Hotel
On a day where temperament not skill was to be tested the Laguna
Village People held their nerve to defeat the Railway Hotel by 6
wickets in a feisty encounter at the Laguna Cricket Ground.
November 7th saw the previously undefeated Railway Hotel come to
the Canley Vale Railway Station (Laguna) full of expectations. The
Railway had scored 270 in a recent game against the Wentworth
Hotel saw themselves as favourites. What they didn’t count on was
quietly confident Laguna looking to maintain it’s own unbeaten
record.
On a gloomy day with rain threatening, Tim Williams won the toss
and sent the Railway in to bat. What followed could only be
described as, a superb display of fielding and bowling by Laguna.
Opening bowlers Kirt Relly (2/19 off 7) and Jack Bailey (0/18 off 5)
kept things tight which brought about the vital breakthrough of
centurion D. Read(4)in the 4th over. This brought Simons (24)
another Railway run maker to the crease, his partnership with
opener Livingstone steadied the train for Railway before making the
mistake of taking on Darren Philips arm. The run out proved the
turning point of the game at 2/34 the Railway were very much still in
it, but they had yet to see the bowling of captain and man of the
match Tim Williams (5/17 off 8.4). Tim Williams and Steve Sullivan
(2/15 off 6) took apart what proved to be a long tail, conceding only
35 runs for the last 8 wickets.
Laguna’s batsmen hardly raised a sweat in chasing down the 70 runs
needed for victory with openers Dennis Jackson (22) Wojt Kowaluk
(18) and Steve Sullivan (24) getting the bulk of the runs. Laguna
ended up 4/82 with Greg Kelso (7) and Jack Bailey (3) the not out
batsmen.
Game Times
21st November game starts 1pm
22nd November Game 1 starts 10.30am, Game 2 starts 2pm.
Please join us for fun weekend of cricket, our thanks as always to
Spiritual Diary
Community news for Wollombi and surrounding districts
Issue 317 - Our Own News - December 2009
I had, in my preparations for this entry, designed an article that gave a full serve to Kevin ’07 for his amazingly brutal and inhumane
treatment of refugees that has come out of a policy that mirrors, almost exactly, the brutality forced upon human beings by the
Howard Conservative Tory Government. It still amazes me that the remaining Tories, including Howard, still think that Rudd is not
tough enough (May God preserve us from petty Dictators!). I will give this serve to Kevin ’07, but it needs, perhaps, to wait until all
the combinations and permutations have worked their evil out.
In the meantime I have been overwhelmed by the generosity, good will, and positive prayers, thoughts and meditations of the whole
community regarding two major issues facing my life and that of my wife, Kerry.
The first!! Hopefully, everyone now knows that Kerry has been the victim of Breast Cancer. Also, hopefully, everyone now knows
that she has undergone surgery and the prognosis looks extremely positive. We still have a long way to go. But all I want to do is to
say “Allelujah”. Well, not all!!!! I am also aware of other local women who have Breast Cancer for whom the prognosis is not as
good. My heart goes out to you and to your partners. What I want is that we should all join together, believers and non-believers, in
such an overwhelming statement of positive and prayerful opposition to this evil, that its power and influence may be reduced and
that we may be in power and control. However it is not only Breast Cancer. It is all forms of Cancer. There are many who are
suffering; men, women and children. Is it life-style? Is it genetic? Is it hormonal? Is it an influence far beyond our understanding at
this stage in history?
The second!! As a result of my appearance in the Valley Artists Play, as part of the “Barbershop Quartet”, I have had a revelation. My
wife says that I am a Ham. So be it! However, to be a grey-haired Ham in the presence of such a distinguished company of young,
accomplished actors is a privilege indeed. This is my first appearance as a Valley Artists Artiste. I hope that it is not the last.
However it has been my incredible privilege to be a part of a hoary old crew who carries extreme respect for, and receives the
respect from, such a young and talented crew of performers.
Valley Artists, may you ever seek to encourage young talent into your midst. May you ever seek to encourage the old and hoary as
artists and as mentors to the young.
Well Done, Valley Artists!
WOLLOMBI. December 1843
District Council.-The first meeting of this body took place at
the Governor Gipps inn on Tuesday, the 5th instant, when a
series of resolutions relative to their own internal management
were passed, and applications for the various offices under the
council were received and read; after which, the consideration
of these applications, the examination into the respective
merits of the applicants, and the amount of salaries to be
annexed to each office, were very properly ordered to stand
over till the next quarterly meeting. At that time repetition of
this order is devoutly to be wished for, and we hope that the
council will exercise with caution that power which, in direct
violation of the municipal rights of the people, has been placed
in their hands, and in deference to the feelings of the
inhabitants who, have no voice in the matter will pause before
voting away their hard enrnings to salaried officers.
8th December, 1843.
A Studious Thief.-On Friday last a man named Flanagan was
placed before the bench to answer a charge of book-stealing
laid against him by Mr. J. M. Townshend. It appeared in
evidence that the prisoner on a certain day called on Mr.
Townshend, and agreed to commence reaping for him the next
morning. In the interim he requested his employer to lend him
the History of England for the night, that he might, as he said,
examine into the line of conduct pursued by Wellington during
his administration. Mr. Townshend, willing to gratify the man's
political taste, lent him the desired volume, with which he
decamped in the night, and was subsequently captured in the
vicinity of the Macdonald River by constable Daniels. When
called upon for his defence he assumed the most insolent
demeanour, and in a trumpet voice, accompanied by strong
gesticulations, addressed the bench in a strain of disjointed
bombast, well intermixed with "words of learned length and
thundering sound," without much regard to their proper
application, and in a pedantic manner strongly denounced the
charge of theft; with outstretched arms showing with the
forefinger of his right hand on the palm of the other how he
would write a statement of his case for insertion in the
newspapers. He was committed to take his trial at the quarter
sessions, and was led from the bar bellowing threats against
the magistrate.
Kilometers 4 kids
On November 16th, Atticus was practicing riding his bike when
30 or so bicycle ridrs rode quietly into Wollombi. The riders,
who rested briefly in the grounds of the Wollombi Museum, were
on a mission. Covering 450 kilometers over three days, under the
banner of "kilometers 4 kids" the riders were on a quest to raise
over $150,000 for the John Maclean Foundation which provides
financial assistance to young Australians who use wheelchairs.
They were not seeking extra funding for this event, having
obtained some corporate funding. However, they were so nice
and encouraging to Atticus in his attempts to master his bike,
that I thought it wouldn't help to mention their cause -
Cessnock LGA Cleans Up in Tidy Towns Awards
Community news for Wollombi and surrounding districts
Issue 317 - Our Own News - December 2009
The NSW Annual Tidy Towns Awards Presentation was held in Tamworth over the weekend 30/10 – 1/11/09. The Cessnock Local
Government Area (LGA) was represented by 17 proud Tidy Towns Committee representatives from Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Greta
and Wollombi Tidy Town Committees.
The Tidy Town Awards is the Keep Australia Beautiful (KABC) flagship program which has come a long way since its inception in
1981. These iconic awards encourage, motivate and celebrate the environmental achievements of rural and regional communities
across Australia. The tagline “Sustainable Communities” was adopted to the program in 2007 to better convey the current issues
and concerns facing regional towns throughout NSW.
The Cessnock LGA was successful, receiving seven (7) awards.
These fantastic results reflect the community spirit and interest in their local community that exists across the LGA, and the
support given by Council. All Tidy Town Committees are to be congratulated for the tireless work and commitment they volunteer
to the local area.
Keep Australia Beautiful Media Release - 4 November 09
Hunter Still on Top at Tidy Towns Awards but Water Conservation is the Winner
The above extract from a Keep Australia Beautiful media release underlines the delight felt when the win for Laguna, Wollombi
Valley, was announced at the recent Tamworth Awards in the Water Conservation category.
The detailed submission to KAB on behalf of the Laguna community and the Wollombi Valley Progress Association was facilitated by
Wollombi Tidy Valleys after discussion with the scheme manager, Carl Hoipo and assistant Phil Dale.
The Progress Association had been successful in receiving a substantial Australian Government Community Water Grant, with a
detailed Project Plan submitted for the collection of rain water from the large roof catchment of the Laguna Hall, to be accessed
most importantly, by the Bush Fire Brigade with letters of support forwarded from Cessnock Council, the Brigade and the
community. It was emphasised that neither Laguna nor Wollombi were connected to a town water supply.
In March 2009, after many months of work, and
tenaciously overcoming delays caused by wet
conditions, the construction team announced the
completion of the Scheme. Laguna Hall has 5 large
water tanks, installed with plumbing and ingenuity,
below the steep hillside behind, providing increased
storage capacity of over 200,000 litres .
The completed project is now managed by the Laguna
Bush Fire Brigade. Water is available for fire trucks, to
the users of the Community Hall and if required, to
Laguna School, saving time and money previously
outlaid in trucking water from outside sources. In
addition the scheme provides the security of
immediate access to water.
The following is an extract from the report forwarded
to the KAB assessing panel by their delightful,
enthusiastic representative, Heather Ranclaud, who
met with the “Tidy Valleys” team, visiting both
Wollombi and Laguna, (with the water tanks full.)
“The Laguna Hall Water Conservation Project has
achieved the outcome the community had envisaged.
That is, to enable the Rural Fire Service to be self
sufficient by collecting rainfall runoff from the large
roof of the Hall required during times of drought or
fire…
A highlight was the unique and outstanding Laguna Hall, designed by local architect Stuart Gibson. This building is a sympathetic
design for the site on the edge of a steep, timbered hillside, and complements the surrounding and local buildings. The large dry
stone wall adds to the appeal of the setting.”
Also noted was“the spirit of co-operation between the communities at Wollombi and Laguna with excellent facilities used by both
villages.”
A total of $2000 in prize money is on offer to local Aboriginal artists entering the 2010 NPWS Aboriginal Art Competition.
Aboriginal people are invited to submit original artworks to the competition which will provide an opportunity for local artists
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Regional Manager Tom Bagnat said that the art competition was an exciting new
program which would highlight the talent of local Aboriginal artists.
“We are looking forward to receiving a vibrant and diverse range of entries that address the theme of “Connection to Country –
Central Coast / Hunter”.
“It’s clear that local Aboriginal people have a connection to the landscape. We hope that this art competition will encourage artists
to express this connection and allow them to share their stories,” said Mr Bagnat.
Open 1st Prize $1,000
