K2 is known as the Savage Mountain, for every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. Harold and Taylor, 

two Australian professionals embark on a journey of self-discovery and physical challenge to reach the summit. After an accident 

leaves one of the men with a severely broken leg, the pair are stranded on a ledge at 27,000 feet. 

If you saw the show you know a few tortured artisans are a screw loose to have even attempted it! To nurture an alien environment 

like K2 as concept and convert it into a fully fleshed reality for it's characters and audience requires a seriously sophisticated blend of 

production & stage values and techniques. Summit reached!! ...and the flag at the top of this mountain has the smiley faces of the 

super talented, half loony cast and crew! 

Dain Southwell portraying Taylor, a young determined Prosecutor, freakishly managed to set the intention and dire situation 

effortlessly from curtain to last minute. Taylor embodied the underlying theme of loyalty and mateship, torn between an emotional 

roller coaster of realisations, fears, set backs and quiet accomplishments. A physically demanding performance, Dain scaled the set 

like Spiderman, a few classy stunts composed, he had the audience covering their eyes in suspense. 

Serendipity saw the Director, Wojt Kowaluk, one of two cast members short in the humble beginnings of production. Fate would 

suggest the role Harold was to be his from the start. Wojt brings a sense of wisdom and composure to his character and grave 

situation. Wojt selflessly portrays Harold in a respectful, thought provoking double-edged sword, an Atomic Physicist whose poetic, 

intelligent notions allow for both science and faith. His battle to sustain life seemed to haunt the existence of our own mortality. His 

demise was heart wrenching yet beautiful in acceptance of circumstance 'cause & effect', ' It's too precious, it's too phenomenal a gift 

to claw and beg to stay'. 

Combined, these two characters are the things Anzac Day war stories and legends are made of. A smart fusion of patriotic values, 

valuable dialogue, good old-fashioned blokey comradery anchored in one hell of a miserable setting. K2 echoes the Aussie spirit with 

all the added trimmings of grubby lady tales and dirty... (shudder) dirty jokes. 

The direction, objective and unbiased, fed the cast freedom for interpretation, exterior motive and intention. An eclectic mix of 

directional support from Bob Philippe, Alan Glover, Janine Oliver and Lynda Marsh offered much depth and perspective to this 

emotionally complex narrative. 

Taylor and Harold's love-hate relationship to the environment reflects the craftsmanship of the set concept and construction. This very 

intimate affair cemented the foundations for the complete immersion experienced, coupled by Peter Firminger’s engaging audio and 

visual effects. Giles Tester with set crew achieved once again the suitable believable backdrop with solid artistic merit. 

If you didn't see this production, you missed out big time! Sucks to be you. The most thought provoking, personally confronting theatre 

I have seen for some time.

HELP WANTED 

This year the Salvos will be conducting their appeal in Cessnock 

and surrounding towns. The new Salvos Captain is a delightful young 

woman whose name is Jacoba Czoban. See story. 

Jac is only new to the area and needs all the help in the world. Especially for the 

Red Sheild Appeal which helps so many people. 

It is planned that there will be 2 collection points in Wollombi. 

One at Greys Inn and the other at the Wollombi Tavern.

Salvos New Cessnock Leader : Jacoba Czoban 

When Lieutenant Jacoba Czoban went to Africa on a mission trip ten years ago, she knew her life would never be 

the same. Now, freshly graduated from The Salvation Army’s School for Officer Training, she’s en-route to her new 

mission field - Cessnock. 

Jacoba says the Salvation Army has always been a central part of her life since a young child. With her 

grandparents, mother and siblings involved in the organisation; she says The Salvation Army is her blood. 

“The friendships I have built in The Salvation Army as well as the mentoring I have received has really shaped and 

impacted my life, as well as helping me build my relationship with God,” she says. 

Jacoba has a real passion for young people and before entering the School for Officer Training in 2010, she studied 

and worked as a youth worker, specifically working alongside young people with disabilities. 

She says the skills she has developed will benefit her immensely as a Salvo officer: “The people skills, interacting 

and relating with people as well as the management skills I gained have really prepared me for the challenges 

ahead.” 

Jacoba says can’t wait to get started in her new position as Salvation Army Officer in Cessnock and says people 

will find her an open, enthusiastic persion who’s willing to give anything a go and loves being creative. 

“I am excited and waiting with eager expectation to find creative ways to build relationships with the people in the 

Cessnock community.”

OLD WOLLOMBI. 

THE WEATHER, &C.-The want of rain begins to be severely felt. On many farms the plough stands idle, owing to the 

impenetrable state of the ground, and the parched appearance of the face of the country presents all the features of a 

premature winter. We had a slight shower on Tuesday night, followed for a time by appearance that gave hopes of a 

further supply, which in the end were not realised. 

A notice signed by the Warden has this day appeared in front of the police office, calling a meeting on Tuesday next, for 

the purpose of placing members in nomination to serve as District Councillors, in the room of J.T. Walker and William 

Wilks Esqrs. It is the general opinion that very few gentlemen in the district really possess the required qualification. 

The state of the road and bridges between the township and Maitland is to the last degree execrable. They are 

disgraceful to the district, and dangerous to the public. If the District Council wishes to win golden opinions, or to make 

themselves decidedly popular, here an opportunity presents itself, of which we trust that body will promptly take 

advantage, by taking this villainous road into their earliest consideration, and ordering the much wanted repairs.

WOLLOMBI.-On Tuesday last was per- formed, for the third and last time, the annual farce of an attempt to elect District 

Councillors. The Warden stated the object of the meeting, and said that he was ready to hear proposed any candidate 

for the situation. There was an awful pause-no voice was heard until the Warden declared the meeting adjourned sine 

die; and thus has become defunct the District Council of Wollombi and Macdonald River.

HOME GROWN ART - A SPIRIT OF PLACE

This exhibition juxtaposes the paintings of local artists whose work distils something special from our valley environment. 

Although different in style and technique, the exhibition, as a whole, manifests a unique quality. 

A quality that we all experience in our landscape ... a strong sense of spirit of this place.

Although their approach and artwork are vastly different, Sydney artists Barbie Hooper and Julianne 

Ross Allcorn have developed a very easy and fun filled working relationship and somehow, through 

years of collaboration, their artwork is complementary both creatively and visually. 

Their first duo exhibition together, From our Collection includes painting, mixed media and drawing. 

Juli and Barbie are delighted to have the opportunity to present their work to the local people and visitors to 

Wollombi. 

Works available are wider in scope than a usual themed exhibition and sizes from very small to very large. 

Gallery hours: Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm. Closes Monday 11th, 10am-2 pm.

Dear Editor, 


I am accumulating some colourful pamphlets published by the Progress Association that repeatedly predict threats to land values as 

a consequence of the introduction of the new Cessnock template LEP. 

There is no evidence to support these assertions. I have obtained valuations of Wollombi properties by respected registered valuers 

during the period in which the Plans have been on exhibition and none support the claims published in OON or the Progress 

pamphlets. 

The Department of Planning rejected aspects of the LEP relating to Wollombi and Mulbring because the resolution by CCC 

Councillors to abandon the environmental overlays was never exhibited and therefore did not comply with planning law. Those 

overlays largely incorporate existing laws relating to soil, water and vegetation. So as not to delay the rest of the LEP the 

Department adopted its normal practice of deferring these matters. Council will have to re-exhibit. I suggest that anybody who has 

concerns arising from the delay consult a registered and insured Australian Legal Practitioner, preferably a specialist in planning law 

accredited by the NSW Law Society, rather than rely on what Progress thinks a lawyer will say. Such expertise is available locally. 

Generally, the law in NSW protects existing uses (and changes to existing uses) regardless of changes to zoning. In the past 

Progress has supported scenic protection zoning for areas around Wollombi without any of the wild claims or controversy whipped 

up over E3 (the old scenic protection). Gloucester Council is relying on existing E3 zoning that applies to their scenic landscape to 

oppose the proposed open cut coal mine adjacent to their town. 

Informed readers probably know that the Lower Hunter Regional Plan identifies the Wollombi Valley as rural and resource land. The 

Strategic Regional Landuse Plan currently on exhibition identifies the Valley as highly prospective for gas and coal but the DoP has 

no plans to quarantine Wollombi from mining, unlike the vineyards or horse studs. In my opinion, Progress would better serve local 

land owners by looking at the bigger picture and toning down its scare campaign.

NSW CAMELLIA SOCIETY 

On SATURDAY 14th and SUNDAY 

15th July, 2012, the NSW CAMELLIA SOCIETY will be 

holding their 43rd Annual CAMELLIA SHOW in the Auditorium 

at Ravenswood School for Girls, Henry St, Gordon. 

The Show will be open to the public from 1.30 to 5pm on 

Saturday, and 11am to 4pm on Sunday. Admission is $5, 

afternoon tea and lunch are available, and plants will be for 

sale at special show prices. 

Members of the NSW Camellia Research Society will be on 

hand to help with information about camellias and their 

culture, so if you would like your camellia flowers identified 

this would be a good opportunity. 

The venue of the show has changed over time, but for the last 

few years has been held at Ravenswood School,. Their 

auditorium complex makes a beautiful venue, and there is 

w h e e l c h a i r a c c e s s . 

Many members say their interest in camellias began after 

visiting one of our Camellia Shows where there are over a 

thousand beautiful blooms on display. There is also a Sogetsu

THE GALLIPOLI ART PRIZE 2012

The $20,000 annual Gallipoli Art Prize is awarded to the artist who best depicts the spirit of the Gallipoli Campaign as 

expressed in the Gallipoli Memorial Club's 'creed' - namely the values of loyalty, respect, courage, comradeship, peace and 

freedom. Artists interpret these values as they relate to any armed conflict in which Australia has been involved. 

The Gallipoli Club creed is "We believe that within the community there exists an obligation for all to preserve the special 

qualities of loyalty, respect, love of country, courage and comradeship which were personified by the heroes of the Gallipoli 

Campaign and bequeathed to all humanity as a foundation of perpetual peace and universal freedom." 

Now in its 7 th year, the prize attracts a broad range of high profile, professional and amateur artists. This year’s competition 

received a record 140 entries with judges noting more professional artists are submitting works each year. Finalists in this 

year’s competition include celebrated artists Paul Ryan and Craig Waddell (both 2012 Archibald finalists), Peter Gardiner, 

Peter Smeeth, Robyn Sweaney and Kerrie Lester as well as many emerging and amateur artists including students from 

Sydney's John Colet Primary School. Each entry tells a unique and often personal story as it relates to the spirit of the 

Gallipoli Campaign. 

“The emotions are involved with the Gallipoli Art Prize in a way that is not true for a competition that deals solely with 

landscapes or portraits. The experience of war is almost unimaginable to members of younger generations: it is art that does 

our remembering for us,” says John McDonald, one of the prize’s esteemed panel of judges. 

The Gallipoli Art Prize commenced in 2006 and will be conducted annually inclusive of the Centenary Year in 2015. The 

acquisitive Gallipoli Art Prize is open to Australian, New Zealand and Turkish artists and aims to create a significant 

collection to commemorate the spirit of the Gallipoli campaign and all those who have served during the following century. 

The Club sponsors a parallel version of the competition in Turkey, honouring the friendship between former adversaries. 

This year’s judging panel includes John McDonald (writer and arts critic for The Sydney Morning Herald), Jane Watters 

(Director, S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney), Barry Pearce (former Head Curator of Australian Art, AGNSW) and Craig Hickey 

(Gallipoli Club Director). 

The 2012 Gallipoli Art Prize finalist works will be open to public exhibition from (10am-5pm) Tuesday, 24 April to 

Friday 11 May, 2012 (except for Anzac Day) at the Gallipoli Memorial Club, 12 Loftus St, Circular Quay SYDNEY. 



Sometimes I am left scratching my head. I have no problem with the sincerity either of Believers who believe or of Non- 

Believers who don’t believe. There is enough complexity in the worlds of religion, science, spirituality and theology to 

make it quite possible that any one thinking person could come up with either position. 

What puzzles me, however, is the generalised stance that all of it; either religion, science, spirituality or theology has to 

be either all correct or all incorrect. All of these fields are explorations into the truth, a search for truth if you will. 

Wouldn’t it be possible then, that each of these fields, or any other field for that matter, may hold to some true 

statements and some untrue statements; some true beliefs and some untrue beliefs? 

Should there not be a recognition that Science, and scientific method in particular, have provided humanity with a 

startling tool for examining some of the claims for belief from all realms? The puzzle is, however, that so few people 

understand what Scientific Method actually is. Ask yourself if you can explain it, even to your own satisfaction. 

There is often a tendency among all of us to take one piece of disproven evidence and to then take the next illogical but 

absolute step of saying that therefore it is all fallacy. That is neither scientific method, nor is it logical thinking. If 

anything, it is faulty analysis based on the fallacy that stands behind commercialised advertising, that a tiny part of the 

truth is absolute proof of what are often very dubious claims. 

There is also the sad tendency for all of us to assume that a belief is a truth rather than a search for truth. 

There is also that other sad tendency to assume that if there is no scientific evidence for a particular phenomenon then 

that phenomenon cannot exist. 

Scientific theory from the area of Psychology is researching, among other things, the phenomenon of closed minds and 

open minds. 

The Closed mind will say that there is an absolute truth and we must believe it. 

The Open Mind is still scratching its head.

HEALING FOR A BROKEN WORLD 

You may not have noticed, but there are some very painful situations in our World and in our own Valley. 

We call these situations many things, but the word “broken” occurs over and over again: broken bodies, broken 

relationships, broken world and so on. 

Generally, what we see from the outside are the results of pain and suffering in others. However those who are going 

through the brokenness suffer the actual pain. 

The Church has a responsibility, first to mend the pain that the Church itself has caused and secondly to provide the 

means of Healing for the Broken World. 

So the Anglicans are having a Healing Service.

It was an impressive entrance to an impressive garden when we visited Lindsay and Cherie’s property in Ellalong. Before 

moving here, Lindsay and Cherie lived on the side of a steep hill, so the flat plains here make for a different type of garden. 

After seven and a half years, Lindsay and Cherie have turned this ten-acre property into a park full of meandering paths, water 

features and plants. Thousands of tubestock have been planted and now Native shrubs of Grevillia, Bottlebrush, Westringia 

etc, are mixed with exotics such as Duranta, Tecoma, Polygala and Hibiscus. Cosmos, Gazanias, Rose, Dahlias and Cannas 

provide bright spots of colour. The tall spotted Gums, Angophera and Ironbarks shade the extensive lawns that lead to dams 

and rock and timber edged watercourses. 

A beautiful Wisteria called Cascade is being encouraged to 

grow up and along branches to cascade like a waterfall to 

the ground. A two-level, two-toned Duranta hedge lines 

the front of the house, with more Dahlias, yellow Daisies 

and Gazanias for colour. Here ‘en masse’ planting of 

Agapanthus, Duranta and selected natives is particularly 

effective, giving the garden a real park like feel. There are 

many outdoor rooms with comfortable seats where one can 

sit and admire this beautiful place. We walked, we looked 

and we came away with some great ideas. This garden 

certainly is fulfilling Cherie’s dream of a ‘vision splendid of 

the acreage extending’ – until she says ‘stop’. Thank you 

Lindsay and Cherie for sharing your garden with us. We 

had a wonderful afternoon.
