KEHILATH ISRAEL’S
Vol. 48, Issue 6/7 June-July, 2012 Sivan-Tammuz-Av 5772
This will be my last column as senior rabbi
of Kehilath Israel Synagogue. It is hard for
me to believe that 35 years have passed since
my first column which I wrote in Montreal,
Canada and mailed to K.I. so that it would
appear just as I was arriving in Kansas City.
Just to give you an idea of the span of years, I
had to mail the hard copy of that first message to you because
there were no computers, no faxes and no speedy way of
getting anything to anyone other than by mail. That is really
perhaps one of the easiest ways to convey the length of time
I have shared my life with you.
As you are receiving this Focal Point we will be celebrating
my special weekend with K.I. I know many of you will be in
attendance and I greatly appreciate the tribute the synagogue
has offered me by these three wonderful events on the weekend
of June 1-3.
I would like to thank the many individuals who spent
countless hours planning what I am sure will be an elegant
weekend. I would like to thank the overall chairs: Rochelle
Kanter, Felicia Weiner and Sam Devinki. They have been
supported in major roles by other individuals who are named
in Steve’s column. But I also want to thank not only the overall
and subcommittee chairs but also so many of you who have
given your time to honor me in this way. I deeply appreciate
it. Much thanks to Allegra Shanberg and Elizabeth Peden
for so many extra hours to be recognized. Thank you also to
Steve Osman and Jordan Gershon of Digital Lagoon. I am
not aware of many of the details as they have been intentionally
kept from me to be a surprise. However, from what I do
know it is going to be one outstanding weekend for not only
myself and my family but for the congregation and community
as well.
I was humbled by the incredible coverage that the Kansas
City Jewish Chronicle gave to my retirement several weeks
ago. Those of you who know me personally are aware that I
shy away from these kinds of publicity events. It did however
give an opportunity to survey many of the goals and objectives
I have tried to fulfill through the years I have shared with you.
A leader is only as good as the team that supports him. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the many individuals
both paid staff and lay leaders who have worked with
me through these many years. Without all of your help and
cooperation I could never have accomplished anything that
we have done successfully on an ongoing basis.
continued on page 3
The weekend of June 1-3 we celebrate the
retirement of Rabbi Mandl at a glorious series
of events. It is one that I approach with a sense
of melancholy because of the mixed emotions
being felt. We are collectively watching a bittersweet
ending of an era for Kehilath Israel.
The excitement of new beginnings must be
balanced by the retirement of an individual who has been our
friend and protector.
Rabbi Mandl has dedicated nearly his entire professional
and adult life to Kehilath Israel Synagogue. This weekend of
programming is designed to provide each individual an opportunity
to participate in some activity in order to say “thank
you” to him. Irrespective of the two evening events, every
congregant should help fill the sanctuary Saturday June 2 to
reflect your appreciation.
During the last few years that I have been more active in
the administration of the congregation, I have marveled at
the incredible intellectual skill he possesses. To take a topic
on a weekly basis and spin it into a presentation that captures
the emotional character of the subject while maintaining the
rapture of an audience is a unique talent not available to many.
When you attend a life cycle event, that talent becomes even
more pronounced as he weaves a story that represents the essence
of the individual in a way that is a vivid characterization.
Listen to him speak and you know you are not listening to a
string of clichés borrowed from the common mainstream of
communication.
If there is a word that could personify him in his role of
senior rabbi, it is “encyclopedia.” It’s not a big stretch to say
that Rabbi Mandl has more knowledge about our congregation,
traditions, practices, and even the “dirty linen”
not publically shared, than anyone still inhabiting our
globe. Fortunately, that compendium of knowledge will
still reside close by and be available for quick searches
in his “database.” When Rabbi Yanklowitz assumes his
role there will be a storehouse of knowledge, advice and
support available when needed.
Leaving one’s turf is not easy and it can be somewhat
typical for the retiring rabbi to reflect an attitude not entirely
receptive to the change. To the credit of both these people,
they have worked together on a collegial and warm transition
that is devoid of the more common components: jealousy, turf
protection and pettiness. K.I. will be the obvious beneficiary
*NO LATER THAN THESE TIMES
In Pirkei Avot, Ethics of our Fathers, R’ Yehoshua Ben Perachia says the famous line, “aseh lecha rav”
– “Make for yourself a teacher.” This saying forms a strong part of Jewish life, as each Jewish individual
is required to seek out and accept the guidance of a particular rav/rabbi. In doing this, the individual connects
himself to the long line of Torah going back to Moshe himself.
What exactly does it mean to make a teacher for yourself? The mishna does not say “ask a rabbi to be
your guide,” but says, “make for yourself a rabbi.” In other words, choose a rabbi and make him your
rabbi, because this is the person whose knowledge and approach to life you respect and admire. Therefore,
choosing a rabbi is no easy task and should never be taken lightly. For sure, he should be a person of honesty,
integrity and modesty, and should be someone who is respected in the community as well as someone who shows respect for
others, and if you are in need of guidance, he is the one who you will turn to and accept his advice and/or halachic decisions.
This is very difficult for most American Jews because our independence has limited our respect for authority, and giving
a rabbi authority in our lives conflicts with Western society cultural traits. That’s our first problem to overcome. We must
actually respect someone that we believe, due to Torah influence and study, has wisdom and insight exceeding our own.
Respect doesn’t mean we’ll consider his wise thoughts. Respect means we recognize he’s the expert, and we’re going to
take his advice over our own. Unfortunately, what usually takes place is when a rabbi gives us a ruling that we do not agree
with, we look for another rabbi who will concur with our viewpoint.
Our shul has certainly followed the advice of R’ Yehoshua in choosing a rabbi to guide and teach the congregation. Rabbi
Mandl has been only the third rabbi of Kehilath Israel Synagogue in the last seventy-eight years. This speaks well for the
congregation and for its rabbis. Rabbi Mandl has guided our shul with integrity, honesty and loyalty to the traditions of our
Torah, even when it meant making unpopular decisions. He has gained the respect of the community, and his knowledge
and reputation is widely known.
For the past fifteen years, I have learned a great deal from Rabbi Mandl. He has been the role model of how to be a religious
and spiritual leader of a congregation, how to integrate modernity with Torah learning and how to be a mensch. I know that
Rabbi Yanklowitz is extremely capable and comes to our kehilah with much enthusiasm, but he will certainly have some
large shoes to fill.
Hedy and I wish both Herb and Barbara much happiness and fulfillment as they enter a new phase in their lives.
Rabbi Mandl’s....continued from page 1
I obviously have reserved most of my more serious
comments about the years I have been with you
for the various addresses and speeches over the June
1-3 weekend. For those of you who cannot be with us,
and I know a number of you are traveling at that time,
I just want to thank all of you for your support and help
throughout those years.
I do hope to write columns from time to time for the Focal
Point at the request and discretion of our new senior rabbi,
Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz. I will continue my columns in
the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle and since, at least initially,
we will not be leaving the community, I hope to see all of you
on a regular and on-going basis.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Herbert J. Mandl, PhD

President’s article....continued from page 1
and so will Rabbi Yanklowitz because of the nurturing environment
being created.
How Rabbi Mandl would prefer to be remembered best
would be for the following of a strict moral compass when
it came to the ritual practice of Judaism. Great pride in the
daily minyan, a known constant in our community not enjoyed
by other congregations, is his most visible achievement. For
those honoring their parents or loved ones, participating in the
therapeutic effect of companionship during a trying period,
K.I. is their comforting home. Creating such traditions here
such as the community Shavuos All Night program, typically
attended by nearly 500 participants, are a part of his legacy.
Those watching him in action on a daily basis will know
that K.I. follows traditional practices that are well grounded
in Jewish law and custom. This strict approach, providing a
religious center to our congregation, has helped us stem the
erosion which has rendered many other synagogues nationally
to less meaningful status in the fabric of their community.
Raising money has never been a role that many embrace
with excitement. Most rabbis recognize the need but do
not want to engage in the practice. The financial vision
of our future, led by the efforts of both Arnie Caviar and
Sam Devinki, to create an endowment cushioning the fiscal
demands of operating our facility, has been made more
successful by Rabbi Mandl. Being able to get some of the
major benefactors of the congregation to recognize and then
donate generation-changing amounts has helped ensure our
future. This is what Rabbi Mandl has done that will survive
and benefit our successors long after the only memory of any
of us may just be a picture adorning one of the walls.
K.I. has continued to survive when others have become
distant memories or are experiencing significant fundamental
problems. We are primed to grow because of the
tireless dedication of Rabbi Mandl over the past 35 years in
maintaining a strong base. Words are but a shallow means
of conveying the impact. We will feel it every time we walk
into this magnificent facility he helped shepherd through the
design, construction and moving process. But it is so much
more than bricks and mortar.
Anyone with even a semblance of knowledge of the daily
grind experienced in representing the interests of thousands
of members over the years understands the emotional and
physical drain of the position. As dedicated as he has been
to the spiritual and halachic needs of the congregation, Rabbi
Mandl must be ready for a change in direction as he enters a
new productive phase of his life. We wish him well.
The entire weekend has been in planning for over a year.
The overall chairs are Rochelle Kanter, Felicia Weiner and
Sam Devinki. They have been supported in major roles by
other individual areas headed by Jennifer Kanter Fletcher,
Marsha and Seymour Krinsky, Karen Gortenburg, Staci
Parelman, Mary Covitz, Alan Organ, Ed Blend, Linda
Goldstein, Lois Winston, Marlene Krakow, Ellen Portnoy,
Kerry Cosner, Cindy Singer, Abbott and Madeline Zolotor,
Susan Osman, Debbie Garon, Bonnie Rosen, Fran
Kanter, Sonny Singer, Barbara Steinberg, and Jessica
Kalender-Rich. Much thanks, too, for so many extra hours
to be recognized of Allegra Shanberg and Elizabeth Peden.
You will also see a number of graphic design and printed
items that were contributed through the generosity of Jordan
Gershon and me at Digital Lagoon.
Over the remaining two months that Rabbi Mandl will
continue to occupy the pulpit, take a moment to tell him how
much he meant to you or your family. I know it will be appreciated.
I look forward to being with you all soon.
SUNDAY, JULY 8
Shacharit.............................9:00 a.m.
Mincha and Maariv.............7:00 p.m.
The fast will conclude at......9:25 p.m.
The historical mourning period for the destruction of the
Temple begins with the 17th of Tammuz, when the wall to
Jerusalem was broken through, and ends with the capture of
the city and the razing of the Temple on Tisha B’Av, the 9th
of Av, three weeks later July 29. The fast begins at 4:20 a.m.
TISHA B’AV
SATURDAY, JULY 28
Mincha................................7:40 p.m.
The fast begins at................8:32 p.m.
Readings from the Book of Lamentations
SUNDAY, JULY 29
Shacharit...............................9:00 a.m.
including selections of Kinot
Mincha................................8:10 p.m.
(Tallit and T’fillin are worn)
The fast will conclude at.....9:09 p.m.
Tisha B’Av (the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av) is
a day of mourning during which Jews fast and bewail the
destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. Along with Yom
Kippur, it is the only full day fast on our calendar. This fact
alone should impress upon us the importance that is placed
on the observance of this day for all Jews. The preceding
period, known as the “three weeks” that began with the Fast of
Tammuz on Sunday, July 8, is considered to be the saddest time
in the Jewish calendar when all evidence of joy disappears
until the conclusion of Tisha B’Av.
Since World War II, many Jews have chosen Tisha B’Av as
the day to commemorate the (Yahrzeit) loss of those family
members who were killed by the Nazis and their associates on
dates that are unknown. The Talmud states that G-d decreed
this particular day as a day of woe and misfortune in the very
beginning of Jewish history. According to this interpretation,
the ninth of Av was the day when the Jews in the desert of Sinai
bewailed their lot when the spies brought back bad tidings
from Canaan (Parshat Shelach). So G-d declared: “You cried
without cause; I will, therefore, make this an eternal day
of mourning for you.” And it was then that the decree was
ordered for the destruction of the Temple, and the scattering
of the Jews amongst the peoples of the earth.
The congregation expresses sincere wishes for a speedy
recovery to Isabelle Gallas, Lyuba Kapustin, Marcus
Levitch, and to all other members of the congregation and
community who have been ill or hospitalized.
We listened to you and have made the Donor Advised Fund more accessible than ever!
You can now open a Donor Advised Fund by making a tax deductible contribution
of $5,000 or more in cash or stock ($2,500 if you're 35 or younger)
You can use your Fund to make gifts to any of your favorite charities now or use it as a
"savings account" for future gifts
Your Fund is professionally invested for tax-free growth
Your charitable giving is handled through one source, thus reducing paperwork and
eliminating the administrative burden of saving individual receipts
And now, for a limited time, you can MEET YOUR "MATCH!" The Foundation will
match one gift to Kehilath Israel Synagogue, in an amount equal to 10% of the initial
contribution you made to open your Fund, with a maximum match of $1,000.
For more information on how to enhance your giving with a Donor Advised
Fund, visit www.jcfkc.org or contact Diane Azorsky at 913.327.8121
or dianeaz@jewishkc.org.
At the May Board of Directors meeting, K.I. received a Bushman Community Endowment grant check for reaching endowment goals.
From left: Diane Azorsky, Assistant Executive Director and Director of Community Endowments, Jewish Community Foundation
of Greater KC; Stan Bushman, funder of Bushman Endowment Program; Rabbi Herbert J. Mandl, Senior Rabbi, K.I.; Steve Osman,
