KEHILATH ISRAEL’S
Vol. 46, Issue 3 March 2010 adar - NisaN 5770
This weekend Saturday, February 27 and
Sunday, February 28 will be Purim. Purim
this year will be very different for us.
It will be the first time in a third of a century
that I have not spent Purim in Kansas
City with the congregation. We will
be having a little of a treat in that we will
be in New York City with our son Seth and his family and
instead of my reading the Megillah as I usually do on Purim,
I will hear Seth reading the Megillah in New York.
This Sabbatical experience has been very interesting for us
and has enabled us to do something we wanted to do for a
very long time, and that is spending some quality time with
our grandchildren.
As we have travelled to a number of communities now
Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles and now New York,
we see the same issues facing every Jewish community regardless
of its size: intermarriage, assimilation, anti-Semitism.
These are all issues that we face in Kansas City and
worldwide.
There is an interesting tradition that is explained in the
Talmud, and as a matter of fact, I have written about this
for The Chronicle as well. The Talmud tells us that at the
end of days when the Messiah comes and all Jewish holidays
and laws will be cancelled, the festival of Purim will
still remain. I assume that the reason behind that strange
comment is because of the very important message of the
Jewish people surviving the threats of anti-Semitism which
was expressed so strongly in Iran under the leadership of Haman
and continues in Iran to this very day.
We continue to watch the developments in Iran as far as
its nuclear program and threat, particularly to Israel which
creates tremendous fear and concern. We continue to support
AIPAC in their effort to encourage the United States
For my column this month, I have chosen
excerpts from an article written by David
Suissa, founder of OLAM magazine. I believe
the questions that Mr. Suissa poses and
answers are relevant to our congregation.
“What’s wrong with Judaism? Why do so
many Jews disconnect from their faith? Why is it so hard to
get them to go to shul? If Judaism is now a choice, why do
so few Jews choose it?
I thought I would end the year by ruminating on some of
these questions, which I hear time and time again from concerned
Jews.
What got me thinking about all this is the re cent emphasis
in the Jewish community on the issue of ethics. I can’t tell
you how many arti cles I’ve read or sermons I’ve heard that
have touched on this. Ethics is now the subject of many conferences
and debates. It’s the Jewish topic du jour.
Now, at first glance, it’s impossible to criticize a message
of morality. I mean, how can anyone argue with Thou Shall
Not Steal? How can you be against a ser mon or conference
that reminds us of the importance of following the laws of the
land and being impeccably honest?
I guess, though, that that’s precisely my problem: this stuff
is too easy. It does n’t really challenge us. It admonishes the
guilty and reminds the innocent, but it doesn’t seduce us into
exploring our Ju daism.
In fact, I think if there’s anything stopping Judaism from
thriving today, it’s the fact that it’s being hijacked by the
moral ists. Do good. Be good. Speak good. The message is
so obvious and true and important that rarely does anyone
look at it and say, “Is that all there is?”
Imagine yourself as a bright Jewish college student who
doesn’t see or feel a need to connect to Judaism. Zionism
is not your thing. So what will entice you to connect to your
faith? A pitch on the goodness of Jewish values, or the goodness
of peoplehood, or the goodness of tradition or tikkun
olam or doing mitzvot?
What if goodness is not really a hot button for you — either
because you al ready see yourself as a good person who does
good deeds or because you feel you can get this goodness
message from other places?
Well, then, Judaism won’t have much to offer you, which is
sadly true for mil lions of Jews today.
ICHA D’AMREI - SOME SAY!
Dear Congregational Family,
Halakhic Judaism, through its requirement of observing
law, teaches us sensitivity to life. Over the centuries, the
Sages of the Talmud and later authorities created vehicles
that enabled the Jewish practitioner to express emotions by
taking an ordinary activity and sanctifying it. To this end,
when we eat or drink we recite a blessing before and after;
when we see a sunset we recite a blessing, when we purchase new
clothes we recite a blessing, all for the purpose of thanking G-d for
our bounty.
Our Sages of blessed memory were wise beyond their time and instituted
a blessing even at the time of great adversity in our lives. Upon hearing of
the death of an individual, they prescribed the blessing Barukh Dayan Ha-
Emet, Blessed is the Judge of Truth. Its recitation helps to realize that no
one is singled out by fate. It helps us to develop a perspective that allows
the good to shine through the darkness.
Mourners find it difficult to recite this blessing, to acknowledge that their
loved one has been taken from their midst, no longer able
to enjoy their company. This is difficult to do, especially when
one is still suffering from the shock of loss. However, in the spirit
of our tradition, we must remind ourselves to look for, and to
find elements of good, that can serve as inspiration for the future.
Judaism is a religious tradition that ultimately looks towards a bright,
better tomorrow. As Annie said on Broadway many years ago, “The sun
will come out tomorrow,” or as the Psalmist wrote, “In the evening one lies
down weeping, but with dawn, a cry of joy!” (Psalm 30) There is so much
good in the world we live in that our tradition is imbued with support to help
us overcome the difficult moments by offering gratitude to G-d for the good
in our lives. Blessings are one way that we can affirm the goodness of the
world. And so I conclude with my favorite blessing, Blessed are You Lord
our G-d King of the universe, the One who is Good and causes Goodness.
CANTOR’S CORNER
On Friday night, March 12 at 6:00 p.m., we will be joining
together for a Rock Balayla service followed by a Shabbat
dinner, as K.I. together with the K.I. Men’s Club, will
be honoring Trent Daniels as our Minyannaire of the Year.
Trent is one of the individuals who has committed his time
and energy to attending almost every morning and evening
service. He also has taken over as senior gabbai and has become
an extremely active member of our shul. I urge you all to make your
reservations for dinner to help us bestow upon Trent this well deserved
honor. There is no charge for Men’s Club members.
We at K.I. have been very fortunate over the years to be able to provide
our shul members, as well as members of the larger Jewish community, a
consistent reliable daily morning and evening minyan. This feat has been
accomplished due to the many dedicated shul members who have made
a commitment to attend and insure we have a minyan (quorum) at each
service to enable people to say kaddish for a loved one. We have certain individuals
who regularly attend every day morning and night, and we have
individuals who regularly attend one service a week and everything in between.
It has been very interesting to watch newcomers to the rotation as they
integrate into the mix. We have had people with very little knowledge of
the weekday services, people who could hardly read Hebrew and people
who initially couldn’t follow what was going on. However, as time went
on, all of these people became comfortable attending, following, participating
and sometimes even leading the weekday services.
We have all types of personalities attending that leads us to some entertaining
moments, but those who attend regularly become one big family.
Some very close friendships and even some marriages have resulted from
attending services. Also, some of our regulars have become quite active at
K.I. So as you see, our daily minyan has had a huge impact on the lives of
our members, and in my opinion, the people who attend the daily minyan
get back in kind what they put in.
We are getting to the point where many of the senior members of our
daily minyan are no longer able to attend on a regular basis. It’s time for
the younger members of our congregation to step up to the plate and fill
in where needed. What better way to start off or finish your day than by
getting together with fellow Jews in friendship and offer thanks to G-d for
everything that is good in your lives, to help our fellow Jew to express his
emotions and/or grief for a loved one who has died and to address your
own spiritual and emotional needs. This is why we were placed on this
earth.
All I ask is that you commit to attend one weekday service per week,
either morning or evening. Please contact me and let me know your availability
and I will place you into the rotation so we can keep our minyan
strong for the next 100 years.
MINYANNAIRE OF THE YEAR
A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Trent Daniels grew up
at Congregation Ohev Sholom. The family moved to Prairie
Village in the early 60's where Trent graduated from Shawnee
Mission East in 1969. During this time, and the years to
come, Trent apprenticed with Marcus Levitch in the electrical
industry. Trent opened his own company in late 1971.
Trent has remained in the electrical industry through the years
and now serves as president and CEO of TD Electric, Inc.
After an extended absence from regular minyan attendance,
Trent became active at Ohev Sholom studying under
Rabbi Daniel Horwitz. Trent helped lead services during
Rabbi Horwitz’s tenure. During Ohev's rabbinic search,
along with Rachel Quinn Macek, Bill Nowack, and Dori
Quinn, Trent became part of the lay leadership providing
the congregation with Torah and Haftorah readers,
and acting occasionally as Shaliach Tzibor, and Gabbai.
Trent joined Kehilath Israel in 2007 where he has continued
to expand his knowledge of Judaism by leading services
and studying with Cantor Shron and Rabbi Bauman.
Under the guidance of Morty Lewkowsky and Rabbi
Mandl, Trent has recently been named senior Gabbai.
Partners in life and business, Trent and his wife, Laura,
have been married for 22 years and are still speaking to each
other. They have three children: Adam, Michael and Alanna,
and two grandsons, Landon and Logan. Anyone visiting their
home or office is familiar with their constant companions,
Sasha and Walter. Trent's parents, Maury and Bernice Daniels
live in Overland Park and are members of Beth Torah.
President cont’d from page 1...........
Of course, Judaism has plenty to offer — it’s one long buffet
full of wonderful de lights: morality, prayer and Torah, yes,
but also centuries of history, philosophy, poetry, music, literature,
theater, mysti cism and humor, among other things.
The problem is that individual groups or movements have
attached themselves to one section of the buffet, ignored the
others, and said, “Here! This is Judaism!” Torah-observant
Jews might ignore his tory and literature. Cultural Jews
might ignore Torah and prayer. Spiritual Jews and tikkun
olam Jews might ignore both, and so on. Yet each one will
claim, “This is Judaism!”
Rarely will any group present the whole buffet or cross
outside of their comfort zones (Limmud being a notable exception).
I’ve spent twenty years in Or thodox shuls, for example,
and I think I can count on one hand the classes or
ser mons that have dealt with Jewish poetry or literature,
By the same token, many of my friends who are “cultural
Jews” have written off Torah study as being outdated and
irrele vant.
My point is this: Jews would be a lot more interested in exploring
their Ju daism if they saw it as a buffet full of dif ferent
delights, rather than a restaurant with one or two items on
the menu — es pecially if those items are predictable servings
of morality.
We focus so much on the obvious virtues — honesty, faith,
compassion, integrity, humility, generosity, etc. — that we
seem to forget the one virtue that makes us feel the most
alive: curiosity.
Yet curiosity is the virtue that not only can entice disconnected
Jews to explore their Judaism, it’s also the virtue that
can bring Jews closer together. What is real love if not the
desire or curiosity to get to know — rather than judge — the
Other?
Ironically, for Judaism to thrive in the next century, we will
need to violate the first rule of marketing: finding your niche
and promoting the hell out of it. We’re niching ourselves to
death. Whichever niche you’re in, whichever section of the
buffet you’re promoting, it would be hoove all movements
of Judaism to mix it up and add a few more items to their
menus.
Think about it. If you see a beautiful spread with an array
of choices, you might criticize one of the choices, but
chances are you won’t criticize the whole buffet. Judaism
deserves nothing less.”
government to bring pressure to bear to stop that program.
Purim comes annually to remind us that as a religious and
ethnic minority, we as Jews continue to be threatened and
must always be aware wherever we live of the fragility of
our status and survival.
Somehow miraculously in every age and generation the
Jewish people survive the threats that it faces including the
most serious one of the Holocaust just a generation ago. We
seem to always bounce back and become even stronger and
thrive in whatever environment we live.
Because of all these factors it is especially important that
we strengthen our commitment to our faith, remain loyal
and active within our Jewish communities, and continue the
important message the Jewish people have been given to
bring to the world for years to come.
MEN’S CLUB
By the time you read this we will have had our second
pasta dinner. By the way, the reservations are coming in we
should have a good attendance. Jacob Schulzinger and
Abbott Zolotor worked real hard to make it enjoyable.
I want to waiver a bit from my usual format. I want to
get the Men’s Club involved in the Golf Tournament.
This is a major fundraiser and we need everyone's help. If
you would like to play, sponsor a hole or cart, or provide
us with items that we can raffle off ($50 value or higher),
please let me know. If you can't do any of the above, maybe
you know someone that would be willing to help. Just
give me a call at 816.363.0336 and I will take it from there.
This month plan to attend the breakfast as we will have a
very interesting speaker.
I will end this with my favorite request, PLEASE TRY TO
ATTEND JUST ONE MEETING.
YOM HASHOAH/HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL SERVICE
The community is invited to the 2010 Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Memorial Service on Sunday, April 11, 1:30 p.m. at the Jewish
Community Campus, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the end of the World War II and the liberation of the camps. This annual
observance honors the memory of those who were murdered during the Holocaust and the lives of those who survived. Cindy Foss,
daughter of survivors Lilly Segelstein and the late Boris Segelstein, is the Chair of the 2009 service.
The program will include the first public screening of Witnesses to the Holocaust: Liberation produced by Midwest Center for Holocaust
Education. It combines excerpts from MCHE's videotaped interviews with local Holocaust survivors as well as personal and
archival photos and maps to describe the end of the war, the liberation of the camps, life in the displaced persons camps, and how the
survivors got to and fared in the US and Kansas City.
A very moving candle lighting ceremony will include Holocaust survivors, Children of Survivors, Grandchildren of Survivors, Jewish
War Veterans, March of the Living participants, and a representative of the Jewish Community. Six candles will be lit in memory of
the six million Jews who perished.
Coordinated by the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee and Midwest
Center for Holocaust Education. Local Jewish organizations are co-sponsors. The entire community is invited to attend at no charge.
JFS joins forces with Yachad Kosher Pantry to help families celebrate Passover-you can help, too
Once again, Jewish Family Services is stepping in to help individuals and families in need as Passover approaches. The economic
downturn has increased the numbers of those in need by more than 50 percent; in response to this increased need JFS is augmenting its
Passover Food Project. With the help of a generous donation from the Avrum and Clara Feinstein Memorial Mazon Fund, JFS’ goal is
to meet the needs of the Jewish families for Passover by providing enough kosher meat, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and other Kosherfor-Passover
foods to last the eight nights of Pesach. You can help us achieve this goal by donating money and/or kosher-for-Passover
foods. Donations may be dropped off at the JFS office at the Jewish Community Campus. Items needed include matzah, matzah ball
soup mix, gefilte fish and Shabbat candles. Monetary donations may be made by sending a check to Jewish Family Services Holiday
Project, 5801 West 115th Street, Overland Park KS 66211, by calling 913.327.8250 and using your credit card or by logging into the
K.I. KINDERGARTENER, EITAN JACOBSON, TEACHES US
GEMILUT CHASADIM AND TZEDAKAH
As an educator, I tend to get overly excited when a teaching moment presents itself. So, when my five
year old son, Eitan, said to me, “Mommy, I don’t think I raised enough money.” I first had to catch my
breath, and then reply “Honey, $20.00 is a lot of money.” I never thought that his little ears were listening,
and his little brain comprehending, all the fundraising discussions that filled the past six months.
My 14 month old nephew, Menashe Koppel Cohn, Koppie, passed away on June 24. It was then that my
family was introduced to an incredible organization, Chai Lifeline. We knew we wanted to give back to
them for all the support they showed to us during such a difficult time. My sister, Becca Wexler, and her
extraordinary organization skills put into motion Team Koppie. A group of what would soon become 20
people choosing to raise money and participate in the Miami Marathon on behalf of Chai Lifeline.
So, Eitan was witness to his Aunt Becca, Bubbie (Linda Cohn), and me waking up early to exercise.
We explained that we had to train in order to prepare for this really long walk. Now he wanted to be the
fundraiser.
He asked if he could sell lemonade at school. Now, that was an idea!
The next day I stalked the lower school principal. I explained how important it was to take advantage of
this opportunity. Mrs. Gray agreed and suggested a money drive. Eitan could bring a decorated jar into his classroom and send a note
home to parents. Excellent! To a five year old, a handful of change is better than a handful of bills or checks.
Eitan loved the idea. He ran to his art supplies, pulled out paper and markers and started coloring and writing. “Mommy, I will tell
you what to write and you write my words.” In seconds, he was explaining who he was, what he was doing and why.
The word spread around school. It wasn’t just kindergarten anymore. Teachers also gave generously. Eitan also wanted to match
his collection. We discussed different amounts of money and he chose to donate $50 of his own.
With so many generous contributions, Eitan collected over $1,000.00 in memory of his cousin, Koppie. In just one short week, he
learned so many valuable lessons. He learned the mitzvot gemilut chasadim and tzedakah, bestowing kindness and caring to others.
When I asked him if he collected enough this time, he smiled and said, “No. I want to raise more next year!”
