“TV-newsfilm got the
short end of the stick
until we got
.
into the act..
99
An Open Letter to the TV News Industry
from Ed DiGiulio, President of
Cinema Products Corporation.
When the TV news market first explodcd on the scene in the eiirly SO’S, manufacturers of
professional motion picture equipment could not, or would not, respond to the special needs and
requirements ofthe new medium. It’s almost as if they wished it would just go away and disappear.
Arid so, b r the two decades, this extremely importiint and large segment of the market for
professional film cameras was served almost exclusively by “conversions” and
“
garage-shop” specials - usually incorporating used components.
Certainly TV-newsfilm got the short end of the stick until we got into the act in 1972!
Our CP-16’s are the first truly professional 16mm sound canieras designedspecifically to meet the
demanding requirements of TV-newsfilm operations. We pioneered the crystal drive system,
the plug-in battery, the built-in Crystasound amplifier, the fast-acting plastic magazine, and a
host of other innovative features.
Ofcourse you can buy cheaper equipment than ours. But, when you budget for new equipment,
keep in mind what it will cost you in the long run.
Remember the quality built into our cameras, and the worldwide network of factory trained
dealer/service organizations we have established for after-sales service.
Note that with every CP-16 you buy, you get a film clip and a test report. Thefilm clip
is a double-exposure steady test. The test report indicates that composite wow-and-flutter
does not exceed .4% r. m.s.; frame line registration is accilrate to within 2.002 inches;
lens flange depth is accurate to within & .000S inches; and your camera, when pulling film,
does not-exceed 32 dR when measured 3 ft. from the front ofan Angenieux 12-120mm zoom lens
(on the weighted “A” scale).
That’s what you deserve to know as a professional user. And that’s what we give as the top
professional supplier. No one else does!
Remember. There are some 1500 CP-16’s out in the field. This represents unprecedented user
acceptance in little more than two years!
Key network freeluncers such as Ron Eveslage, Skip Brown, Bob Peterson, Patrick O’Dell,
Larry Travis, Jim Klebau, and many others, have all bought CP-16’s and have alreidytraded up to
the newly introduced CP-16 refix.
Remember. These are cameramen whose livelihood depends on the eyuipmc
own. If they can afford to pay the price for ’ quality, cun you afford to do less?
When it comes to flatbeds,
Because nobody else in the world knows your film cutting needs like Moviola.
That's why our new six-plate, four-plate and two-plate flatbed editors can save
you time and money in a way nobody else can match.
They're simple, fast, flexible and precise. With solid, practical features you
won't find all together anywhere else. Like picture/sound interlock at ten times
sound speed. Electronically controlled picture/sound inching and single-
frame viewing-Immediate stop on a precise frame at sound speed with no
spillage or tension loss- Frame/footage or second/minute display. Clear
and sharp 8Y2" x 11 1/2" viewer that provides full viewer brightness with no
film damage-Integrated circuit audio system. And more.
Remember, we've been a basic, everyday part of the American motion pic-
ture industry for more than fifty years. And that kind of on-the-job experience
is the reason why our new flatbeds will outperform anything put up against
them. Why take a chance on anything else, when you can get a Moviola?
A course in Photographic Chemistry dealing
with the chemistry and photographic proper-
ties of photographic emulsions and developer
solutions will be held evenings at the Roches-
ter Institute of Technology beginning in Sep-
tember, it was announced by Prof. Ronald
Francis, Chairman, Photographic Science and
Instrumentation Div., Rochester Institute of
Technology. Rochester, NY 14623. Topics to
be covered include formation and growth of
silver halide crystals, chemical and spectral
sensitization, addenda and coating, latent
image theory, theory and application of con-
ventional and diffusion transfer processing.
and comparisons of silver halide and non-sil-
ver photographic systems. The course is in-
tended to be at the upper undergraduate or
first year graduate level. The laboratory work
of the course will supplement the lectures and
will deal with the relation of emulsion and de-
veloper composition to their properties, emul-
sion and process solution control, photograph-
conventional processing and materials.
Sci/Com ‘74, a science communication sym-
posium sponsored jointly by the Canadian and
American Scientific Film Associations was
held 21-24 May in Rochester, N.Y. The
speakers included producers of popular televi-
sion science shows as well as producers of
highly technical motion pictures of laboratory
research techniques. Thirty-four papers were
presented. The Luncheon Speaker was Wes-
ley T. Hanson, Jr., Vice-president and Direc-
tor of Reasearch of Eastman Kodak Co. He
said that Eastman Kodak Co. fully expects
that 20% of film manufactured in the future
could use emulsions made of non-silver mate-
rials with even a higher percentage of photo-
graphic paper using no silver. He noted that
Kodak’s “research and development erforts
are in the broad field of electrophotography.”
Hc emphasized, however, that there was no
cxpectation of the obsolescence of silver in the
photographic process.
in 1973, a 2.4% increase over 1972. The infor-
mation contained in the Survey was gathered
from more than 200 audio-visual producers.
The single largest percentage gain shown in
the survey was made by multi-media print-
oriented kits containing some audio-visual
components - sales were increased by 31%
over 1972 sales. Audio-visual-oriented kits in-
creased sales by 9%. The single largest dollar
gain was made by filmstrips with cassettes
which increased sales by $6 million over 1972.
For the first time, sales of sound filmstrips
(record and cassette) exceeded sales of 16mm
color films, rising by 12% to $49.4 million.
Cassettes accounted for 88.5% of all prere-
w w
In their constant battles for higher ratings, the television networks have
come to recognize that network news gets higher ratings when backed by
strong local news coverage. One of the major TV networks has even loaned
out their research director to several affiliate stations to advise them on how
to improve their local news operation. As far as the network is concerned, the
local news operation is key!
Indeed, as many of the smaller independent stations
and local affiliates have come to realize, on
their own, ratin s are generally up when TV sta-
tions present in- 8 epth local news coverage, backed
by mini-documentaries and public service reports
that are geared to the needs, concerns and interests
of the viewers in that local area.
Making it in the ratings.
Certainly television news is one area where being
big or small doesn't count for much. Making it in the
ratings really depends on a dedicated staff with
sharp TV-journalistic perce tions, and a determination
to make ambitious an B imaginative use of the
best available equipment. Within the limits of the
usual budget restrictions.
And the best equipment on the market today, at
competitive prices, is Cinema Products' line of
CP-16 reflex and non-reflex sound cameras. Ideally
suited for small crews andlor one-man-band operation!
Imaginative use of equipment.
Whatever your particular production needs - reflex
or non-reflex, or both - the CP-16 and CP-16R
are so versatile they lend themselves to the most
daring and creative use your news cameramen can
think of. You get all the freedom of movement you
need . . . silent, dependable, no-nonsense "workhorse''
kind of performance . . . plus all the features
you would ex ect on 16mm cameras costing many
thousands of fi ollars more. Without compromising
quality.
The price is right!
So, whatever your budget, and whatever local news
operation you have - network-owned, affiliate, or
independent - Cinema Products gives you the
choice of the most outstanding TV-newsfilm/
documentary sound cameras. Reflex and non-
reflex. And the price is right!
WQAD-TV, sewing the Quad Cities (including Moline, Illinois), is typical of local
affiliate stations, whose 'serious and imaginative treatment of local news
has been rewarded by appreciably higher ratings.
At a recent semi-annual Illinois News Broadcasters Association convention,
WQADTV picked up five Associated Press flrst place awards for
TV-newsfilm coverage, all shot with the CP-I6/A. Included in WQADs award
sweep was the Feature Photography award. On two other award
categories there was an added notation: "Judges were moved to comment
on excellent cinematography."
Also shot with the CP-16/A is WQADs special on open heart surgery facilities
in the Quad Cities - a documentary currently up for a National Heart
Association award. Management at WQAD-TV is so pleased with the
capabilities of the CP-l6/A camera that it is planning to buy another one.
The new Pathe Electronic Duolight camera,
measuring 9 by 3 % by 6’/4 in a diecast hydral-
lium body. weighing 6 Ib, has been announced
by Karl Heitz. 979 Third Ave., New York,
NY 10022. The camera is available as a dou-
ble super-8 or 16mm (DS8 and 16 Duolight).
Both models have a rotating C-mount turret
for a wide choice of zoom lenses plus hun-
dreds of other interchangeable lenses and at-
tachments ranging from 360° circular-image
ultra-wide-angle up to IOOOmm super-tele-
photo.
The behind-the-lens CdS cell lightmeter
measures overall illumination from either film
or shutter surface with the camera running or
not; it provides electronically compensated
readings for any lens at any distance with any
lens accessory. A detachable micro servo
motor couples to popular zoom or other C-
mount lenses for automatic exposure control.
Thc CdS cell and reflex system are protected
against stray light by an integral cover when
not in use or when filming without viewing.
The electronic meter system has no me-
chanical linkages; it is designed to provide in-
stant and accurate readings up to 1/10 of an
flstop. Two light-emitting diodes give a large
rcd signal on the upper left to indicate overex-
posure and a small red signal on the upper
right to indicate underexposure. Both signals
are visible even under very poor light condi-
tions and, with automatic diaphragm control,
indicate unsuitable filming conditions. With
manual control, the diaphragm can be turned
until both LED signals disappear when the
exposure will be correct. A shockproof.
transistorized solid-state electronic circuit
board and goldplated contacts are incorporat-
ed to withstand the most rugged use and to
692 August 1974 Journal of the SMPTE Volume 83
eliminate most meter repairs. The meter sys-
tem is activated by a 12-V dc battery.
Film ratings can be selected from 10 to 400
ASA with intermediate settings and speeds
ranging from 18 to 64 and, with a 15-V bat-
tery, 80 frames/s for ultra-slow motion. Con-
tinuously variable shutter openings with click
stops from 0 to 1 (180’ angle) are adjustable
while filming. Computer dials enable the op-
erator to combine any ASA ratings, speeds
and shutter openings for electronically-con-
trolled, automatic or manual exposure set-
tings.
The optical system, with glass pellicle, of-
fers a parallax-free reflex image without flick-
er while filming. An etched ground glass with
crosshair reticle and TV title safe-action
frame line is used to provide accurate compo-
sition, focusing and depth-of-field control.
The picture is magnified 20 times for opti-
mum brightness with open or closed shutter.
A large light-shielding, soft-rubber cup ro-
tates for left or right eye use. The ocular is ad-
justable from +2 to -2 diopters for individual
eyesight.
A one-to-one shaft permits attachment of
any accessory motor for time-lapse studies,
animation, etc. An internal, brushless. 12-V
dc electric motor with Hall-effect generator is
electronically governed for speed accuracy. A
power backwind for the entire film length of
100 or 400 ft permits double exposures, dis-
solves and other special effects.
A motorized 400-ft magazine with footage
counter permits uninterrupted film runs of 11
min with 16mm, or 40 min with double super-
8 film.
The camera has a detachable pistolgrip
with thumb release, shoulder belt and optional
shoulder support, holding a 0.5 Ah battery.
The pistolgrip is angled for easy portability
and right-hand or left-hand filming. The
mounting surface of the camera is large and
flat for optimum stability on a tripod.
Price range of the Pathe Duolight, depend-
ing on lenses and other options, is from $1.495
to $2,995.
Kodak type C Ektachrome 160 movie film, a
super-8 film designed for use in a wide variety
of lighting situations without filtration, has
been announced by Eastman Kodak Co., 343
State St.. Rochester, NY 14650. The film can
be used in any camera having the capability of
exposing ASA 160 film. Development of the
film was prompted by studies showing that
the most common ser error was that of forget-
ting to use the camera’s built-in filter under

daylight conditions, resulting in movies with a
bluish cast. With the new film, movies in any
light can be made by switching the daylight
filter out of the light path and setting the ex-
posure control to ASA 160.
The new film is specially sensitized to re-
duce shifts in color balance caused by differ-
ences in the color quality of illuminants allow-
ing movies to be made without a filter in any
type of illumination including daylight, fluo-
rescent lamps, household light bulbs, stage
and sports lighting. color TV and firelight. A
50-ft cartridge of Kodak type G Ektachrome
160 is priced at $4.20.
tems, has been announced by K and H Prod-
ucts, Ltd., Main St., North Bennington, VT
05257. The device has a cantilevered support
arm which allows the camera to be placed di-
rectly in front of the eye. When not in use the
camera may be swung aside but it can be in-
stantly returned to the shooting position. The
cantilcvcred support allows hands-free opera-
tion. The camera support arm pivots on a
high-strength aluminum alloy which carries
the VTR deck. The design of the frame allows
the weight of the deck and the camera to be
sharcd by the shoulders and hips. The deck
may be quickly mounted and demounted from
the frame. Price of the Porta-Brace is % I 50.
A simplified method of making large aspheri-
cal lenses has been developed at Mullard Re-
search Laboratories in Redhill, England. The
lenses, used for TV projectors, aircraft and
space cameras, etc., are made by a molding
proccss in which a glass base is used to carry a
thin, hard and durable plastic coating; the
surface of the plastic is aspherically profiled.
The new method is simpler and less expensive
than the conventional method which requires
technically difficult grinding and polishing
operations; it is also reported to make possible
a more consistently accurate profile providing
an improved optical performance.
The Mullard Laboratories are part of the
Philips (Eindhoven, Netherlands) Group of
Companies. Announcement of the new lens-
making method was made by Mullard Ltd.,
Mullard House, Torrington PI., London, WC
I E 7HD, England.
