Welcome to our new 2012 Holiday Brochure 

Thank you to all of you for your support this year and as always we have added some new 

destinations in 2012. They are all marked as ‘NEW TOUR’ in the brochure but here is a selection. 

In England, we have finally secured a holiday to the Isles of Scilly (p2) which is sure to sell out early. Our popular Single Rooms Only 

holiday visits Cornwall for the first time as well (p5). For the young, or young at heart, we visit Pontins in the Summer Holidays (p9). 

We stay in Cromer for the first time on a Norfolk & Sandringham Holiday (p16). One of our popular Optional Walk Holidays visits the 

Peak District staying in a great hotel (p17) and finally two new holidays to the North West, Last Drop Village & Lancashire Hills (p24) 

and Petals & Porcelain (p27). We have also increased the number of Warners’s Holidays this year due to extra demand for them, see 

page 26 or the enclosed flyer. 

In Wales we have added a Heart of Wales holiday (p32) and the popularity of Scotland continues so we have 4 new holidays there. Summer in 

Scotland (p34), Glorious Gardens of Dumfries & Galloway (p34), Scottish Railway Adventure (p36) & Highlands from the Beach (p38). 

There is a fabulous holiday to the Channel Isles (p43) where you get to stay on Jersey & Guernsey with days out included. In Ireland, four of 

our six tours are either new or have amended itineraries so please have a look between pages 45 and 47. 

Finally into Europe and we have new holidays to Luxembourg and Belgium (p49), Switzerland & Italy (p54) and Italy including Venice (p55). 

You will see that some of these are to be operated in conjunction with Woods Travel of Bognor Regis. The tours that we have operated with 

them have been a great success in 2011. Our thanks again from everybody at Barnes.

SEATING PLANS 

We use airline style numbering and this runs 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 2A etc. A and B are door side seats and C and D being driver side seats. 1 is the 

front row through to 13 being the rear row. Please ask any member of the office staff to explain if you have any more questions. 

EXTRAS 

Our holiday prices include all coach travel during the holiday. The itinerary for each holiday will make it clear if any entrances are included or not. 

DRIVERS AND COACHES 

Our drivers are renowned for their care and professionalism whilst driving and their helpful attitude, which all contribute to the enjoyment 

of your holiday. All coaches are extremely modern, comfortable, air conditioned and will be fitted with a toilet plus a fridge. All coaches are 

non-smoking. 

HOTELS 

An important part of the holiday, so we are very careful about the hotels used. All are to a good standard with en suite rooms with 

televisions and are described individually under each holiday. Many hotels offer entertainment in the evenings. Any requests should be made 

on the booking forms. 

SINGLE TRAVELLERS 

A large number of our passengers are single travellers and we of course welcome you aboard all of our tours. On some holidays, 

unfortunately, hotels will charge a supplement for single rooms, this is shown under each individual holiday. Where there is

no mention of a supplement it means that we have some single rooms available without a supplement, these rooms tend to 

get booked up extremely quickly and any further rooms may attract a supplement from the hotel. To help you find holidays 

without a single supplement, look for this logo. 

WHEELCHAIRS AND MOTORISED SCOOTERS 

We are happy to carry conventional wheelchairs, however, motorised scooters do create a series of practical difficulties and unfortunately 

we are now unable to carry them on holidays that are to more than one hotel. If you do wish to bring a wheelchair or a motorised scooter 

then we do request that you inform us at the time of booking so that we can check that there is space and that the scooter is a type that we 

are able to carry.

Government and operated by the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK. If we should cease trading you are guaranteed repayment of

Isles of Scilly 

St Mary’s 

After many years of waiting we have finally got an 

hotel on the Isles of Scilly. The Isles of Scilly are an 

archipelago of five inhabited islands and numerous 

other small rocky islets 28 miles off Lands End. With 

a total population of just over two thousand, an 

exceptionally mild climate, and countless golden 

sandy beaches, Scilly is a beautiful haven of peace 

and tranquility. Our base is St Mary’s where you can 

chill out watching the tide change, the flowers open 

and the sun shine. There is also plenty to do such as 

nature trails, bird and wildlife trips, local pottery, 

craft shops etc. 

Sunday We make a leisurely journey to Cornwall and spend the 

night at the Cliffdene Hotel in Newquay. 

Monday Following an early breakfast we make our way to Penzance 

to catch the 0915 Scillonian ferry for our 2hr 40 minute sailing to St 

Mary’s, the island where our hotel is based. 

Days whilst at resort 

A A full day guided walking tour of the island of St Mary’s. 

B To the island of Tresco and a full day guided walking tour 

including a visit to the world famous Abbey Gardens (boat fee 

and gardens included). 

C A day at leisure on St Mary’s or maybe catch a boat to one of the 

other islands (not included) 

Friday We depart St Mary’s at 1630 for the boat journey back to 

Penzance. Here we will be met by coach for the journey home. Back 

to the Swindon area approx. midnight.

climate, St Ives is perfect in all seasons. A stone’s 

throw from the harbour is the old part of the town

First Day We travel to Cornwall.

First Day We travel along the Atlantic Highway via Bude to call at 

Padstow with its lovely harbour and crooked streets.

Mawes, a yachting resort, before moving on to Mevagissey, a 

fishing village much loved by artists. 

Last Day Leaving St Agnes we call at Boscastle, with its dramatic 

harbour and setting, before heading home. 

Day 1 We stop in Bideford for lunch and then follow the Atlantic 

Highway along the north coast of Cornwall to St Agnes. 


A We view St Michael’s Mount on the way to Lands End and from 

here we take the dramatic coast road to St Ives where we make a

B We travel to Newquay then make the scenic coastal drive to

Devon Coast 

& Dartmoor 

Paignton 

Paignton is a lovely seaside resort with a level 

esplanade leading to a small harbour, and there are 

fine views over Torbay with its vivid blue sea and sky. 

Beside the beautiful coastline, our tours will show us 

much of Devon’s enchanting countryside. 

First Day Heading for Paignton we call at Exeter, one of Britain’s 

most historic cities with a grand cathedral. 

Tours at resort 

A A scenic circular tour today. Firstly to Totnes, a charming old town 

above the River Dart. We then travel to Dartmouth via the 

wonderful coastal route via Kingsbridge and Torcross. After 

enjoying Dartmouth in its beautiful setting between steep hills 

and the picturesque harbour, we complete the circular tour by 

crossing the river Dart and returning to Paignton. 

B A scenic tour of Dartmoor with its rugged, desolate beauty calling 

at Princetown, the highest village on Dartmoor, and Tavistock. 

Last Day We return home, travelling via the coastal through

An great tour to a great hotel that combines a 

relaxing cruise along the Great Western Canal with a 

railway journey to the Somerset coast. Operated for 

the first time in 2011 and was a great success. 

Monday We take the scenic route to Devon with a lunchtime stop in 

Cheddar Gorge. 


A A morning free in Tiverton before a gentle cruise along the Great 

Western Canal by horse-drawn barge. During the journey you will 

hear some tales about the canal. A Devon Cream Tea will also be 

served during the 2.5 hour journey. 

B We join the West Somerset Railway, Britain’s longest steam 

railway, at Bishops Lydeard for a scenic ride through the Quantock 

Hills to the resort of Minehead. We continue along the coast with 

a stop in Lynmouth before returning over Exmoor to our hotel. 

C We travel to the south Devon coast and make stops in the seaside 

towns of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton.

reason. Almost half is designated an area of outstanding

First Day To Southampton for the interesting cruise across the

Day 4 We head to Biddenden vineyard in time for a lunch before a

Nostalgic Railways

We visit 3 railways in this lovely corner of England. 

The Bluebell Railway was one of the first to be 

rescued from oblivion after “Beeching” and is still 

among the best for recreating the feeling of the 

railway heyday. The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch 

Railway runs along the Kent coast with very 

different scenery and still provides a valuable service 

for locals. Finally, the Kent & East Sussex Railway is - 

the country’s finest example of a rural light railway. 

Monday Towards Kent with a lunchtime stop in Royal Tunbridge 

Wells. We continue through pretty Kent villages including Pluckley, 

the setting for the filming of the Darling Buds of May. 

Tuesday We travel through tranquil Ashdown Forest, which AA 

Milne used to imagine the scenes for his Winnie the Pooh books. We 

take a ride on the Bluebell Railway, with time to enjoy the lovely 

restored stations. We return to the hotel with a short stop in the 

resort of Eastbourne. 

Wednesday Free time in the pretty town of Rye, with its typical 

clapperboard clad houses. We then travel on the Kent & East Sussex 

Railway for a return journey through 10 miles of the unspoilt Rother 

Valley between Tenterden & Bodiam. 

Thursday To New Romney for a coastal ride along the Romney, 

Hythe & Dymchurch Railway to Hythe. We then continue to 

Canterbury with many ancient buildings, shops and of course the 

Norman Cathedral.

fun session with our Antiques Host where small items that the group 

have brought are discussed. 

Saturday We enjoy the best that Kent has to offer with stops in Rye 

and Tenterden. Tenterden is a charming town with traditional 

shopping and Rye has enchanting cobbled streets and beautifully 

preserved historic houses from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times. 

Sunday We visit the nearby Detling Antiques and Collectors Fair 

where we can try and find the best bargain (or at least something 

interesting!). In the afternoon we visit Canterbury with its stunning 

architecture and world famous buildings. In the evening our Antique 

Host declares whether our bargains are treasure or trash! There will 

be a prize for the day’s most interesting purchase.

Cliftonville 

The orchards, hop fields and vineyards give Kent its 

reputation as the Garden of England. Kent has a rich 

sense of history and tradition, and is dotted with 

picturesque villages, imposing castles and stately

long promenade and cliff top walks. 

Monday To North Kent via a lunchtime stop in Royal Tunbridge 

Wells. 


A We visit Deal where an endless pageant of ships is visible from 

the seafront. We return along the coast with a stop in Ramsgate 

with its wonderful blend of maritime history, architectural finery 

and cosmopolitan pizzazz, and Broadstairs. We complete our day 

with a drive along the coast through Broadstairs. 

B To Canterbury, a city which has preserved some medieval 

character. Long stretches of the town’s Norman walls survive, 

built on Roman foundations and watched over by the Cathedral. 

On our return we make a short stop in Herne Bay with its 

traditional seaside magic. 

C A choice today; spend your time in Rochester, where England’s 

second oldest Cathedral sits next to the Castle or visit the 

Historic Dockyard at Chatham (entry not included). Or if you 

would prefer you can split your day between the two.

On this tour we explore the countryside that 

inspired two of the nation’s finest painters, John 

Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. We have 

included entry to Flatford Cottage, Framlingham

Friday We call at Saffron Walden, an unspoilt town full of superb 

buildings. We then continue to Colchester via the much 

photographed village of Finchingfield. 

Saturday Today we visit the beautiful Christchurch Mansion, near 

Ipswich, where there is the largest collection of Gainsborough and 

Constable paintings outside of London. Following a lunchtime stop in 

the pretty coastal town of Aldeburgh we continue to the town of 

Framlingham and visit the 12th Century castle that dominates the 

town. Mary Tudor mustered her supporters here before being 

crowned Queen. 

Sunday We venture into the heart of Constable Country and visit 

Flatford Mill. Here we will find a 16th Century thatched cottage that 

the artist regularly painted and an exhibition on his life and work. We 

then embark on a circular tour of the Suffolk countryside viewing 

Sudbury and Long Melford before making a stop in Lavenham, ‘the 

finest medieval town in England’. 

Monday We return home with a final stop in Suffolk at Bury St 

Edmunds, one of Britain’s best loved market towns.

Based in the historical city of Norwich, this tour 

shows you all the best that Norfolk has to offer 

including the Bure Valley Railway, the North Norfolk 

Railway and 2 cruises on the Broads. This tour sold 

out on two dates last year so book early! 

Monday Towards Norfolk with some free time in Cambridge. 

Tuesday Free time in the morning to explore Norwich. In the 

afternoon we join a cruise boat for a 2 hour cruise on the Norfolk 

Broads which includes a Cream Tea. 

Wednesday We travel towards the coast and enjoy a ride on the 

North Norfolk Railway between Holt and Sheringham through a 

delightful area designated as being of outstanding beauty. There is 

then free time in the traditional fishing village of Sheringham. 

Thursday We travel to Aylsham where we board the Bure Valley 

Railway for a journey through unspoilt countryside to Wroxham. 

After disembarking the train, we catch a boat from Wroxham Bridge 

and enjoy a picturesque cruise along the Wroxham Broads. Following 

some free time in Wroxham we also visit Wroxham Barns, a collection 

of beautifully restored 18th Century Barns where you can browse in 

the craft and gift shops watching traditional craftsmen at work.

Peak District

Following the success of our two walking holidays in 

2011, join this holiday to the Peak District. Each day 

you can choose to do a walk, where you are dropped 

off and picked up by the coach, or stay on the coach 

for a conventional day out. We have also included

House. On this tour the walks will be led. No need to 

decide until the day which option you would like to do. 

Monday We head north with a lunchtime stop in the picturesque, 

small market town of Ashbourne, situated at the southern tip of the 

Peak District. 

Day A 

Option A We travel across the Peak Districe to Buxton, travelling via 

Castleton. You have all day to enjoy Buxton, the Cultural Capital of the Peak 

District and a Spa Town with stunning scenery, magnificent architecture and a 

wealth of shops. 

Option B To the Castleton area where we enjoy a 5 mile walk via Rushup 

Edge and Mam Tor that finishes in Castleton. Following a lunch time stop in 

Castleton we travel to Buxton where we spend the remainder of the day.

Option A We travel via Miller’s Dale, with great Peak District scenery, to 

Bakewell, a beautiful old market town with the River Wye meandering gently 

through the centre. In the afternoon we visit Chatsworth House where we

Option B To Miller’s Dale where we enjoy a 5 mile walk along the Monsal 

Trail towards Bakewell. The coach will take you the remaining 4 miles into

Day C 

Option A Following a scenic drive via Winster we arrive in the tourist resort

Where There’s Brass 

A wonderfully evocative and varied tour blending 

Yorkshire’s fascinating folk history with stirring brass 

band music, the lovely scenery of the Peak District 

and a chance to have a go at making the perfect

Friday We travel to Yorkshire via a stop in Chesterfield, famous for 

its crooked spire, where today is market day. In the evening there is a 

speaker with a light-hearted talk about the area with plenty of 

anecdotes. 

Saturday Yorkshire has an amazing past which we explore with a 

local guide. We are shown the former Yorkshire coalfields and some 

of the riches and character that the ‘Black Gold’ brought to the area. 

The 1996 film ‘Brassed Off’ was based on this area and the tour will 

include some of the locations used. 

Sunday We make a short journey to Brodsworth Hall and Gardens 

with a packed lunch provided by the hotel. The Hall’s interior offers a 

time capsule of family life from High Victoriana to the mid 20th 

century additions where visitors can reminisce over some familiar 

items or wonder at the more unusual ones. There is also time to 

explore the beautiful grounds before enjoying a Brass Band concert 

on the lawn (band TBC). 

Monday We travel via Hathersage and Castletown to the Peak 

District’s main town of Buxton for a lunchtime stop. In the afternoon 

we continue our tour of the Peak District travelling via Hartington to 

Bakewell. There is free time to explore Bakewell before we visit the 

Original Bakewell Pudding Shop where we spend a fun evening with a 

tour of the bakehouse and a chance to make our own puddings! 

While the puddings are baking a 2 course meal is served.

North Yorkshire. The holiday is completed with time

This action-packed tour explores the county of 

Yorkshire, the setting for a number of films and 

television programmes over the years. We include a 

ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a guided

Friday To Yorkshire and we make a lunchtime stop in Uppermill. 

Home to craft shops, tea rooms, several pubs and the Saddleworth

Saturday We enjoy a 2 hour guided coach tour of the area with a 

local guide and entertainer. He will show us the locations etc. of the 

TV shows Last of the Summer Wine, Where the Heart is, Woman 49 

and League of Gentlemen. There is then free time in Holmfirth, 

setting for Last of the Summer Wine, to maybe enjoy a cup of tea in 

Sid’s Café or visit Nora Batty’s house. On our return we have a scenic 

tour into the Yorkshire Dales with short stops in Kettlewell, setting 

for the film “Calendar Girls”, and Esholt, where some exterior scenes 

for Emmerdale were filmed. 

Sunday Following free time in Pickering we enjoy a journey on the 

North Yorks Moors Railway to Goathland. Goathland is better known 

as Aidensfield in TV’s Heartbeat and the station also featured in the 

first Harry Potter film as Hogsmeade. North Yorkshire was also home 

to Alf Wright – better known as the author James Herriott and the 

popular television series All Creatures Great and Small was based on 

his books. We visit the World of James Herriot in Thirsk where Alf 

Wright was a vet and gained inspiration for his books. 

Monday We return home with a stop at Meadowhall Shopping 

Centre in Sheffield.

north east England. In 1825 the world’s first passenger 

railway ran from Stockton to Darlington pulled by 

George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 and you can

oldest warship still afloat and learn about this amazing 

period in our history from costumed guides. We also 

visit Beamish and take a ride on the North Yorkshire

can visit the wonderful National Railway Museum (free entry) and

beginning of the railway era. In the afternoon we travel to Hartlepool 

Maritime Experience where quayside visits can be made to historic 

ships including HMS Trinacolalee, Britain’s oldest warship still afloat. 

Sunday We travel to Beamish, a wonderful 300 acre open-air 

museum housing an 1825 Manor House and waggonway, a 

reconstructed 1913 town with farm and tram rides. 

Monday We return viewing the Yorkshire Moors and there will be a 

ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Goathland to 

Pickering . We return home following a lunch stop in Pickering.

A Travelling via Narberth and Haverfordwest we travel along the 

coast road known for its “Seventeen Hills in Sixteen Miles” 

through Newgale Pebble Beach to the quaint little village of Solva 

where we make a stop. We continue to St. Davids where ample 

time is allowed for lunch and to view the cathedral, the largest in 

Wales and built on a lovely stretch of coastline. We continue 

along the Irish Sea Coast to Fishguard and our return to Tenby is 

over the Preseli Mountains. A great day out. 

B We travel to Carmarthen for a lunchtime stop, where there is 

good shopping and wednesday is market day. Then on to 

Laugharne for a short stop in this attractive village. Our return to 

Tenby takes in Pendine Sands and the narrow coast road past 

Amroth Castle, where during the last 25 years all the houses on 

the sea-ward side have been washed away. 

C A seafront drive through Penally and Lydstep brings us to 

Manorbrier Castle where we make a short stop. Then on to our 

lunchtime stop in Pembroke where we can view the impressive 

mediaeval fortress. More beautiful coastal scenery as we travel 

via Hundleton, Angle Bay, Merrion and finally The Ridgeway, a 

narrow road running along the top of the hills with wonderful

arriving in the picturesque harbour town of Kirkcudbright for a 

lunchtime stop. We return along the edge of the Galloway Forest 

Park towards New Galloway, before passing alongside Loch Ken and 

back to the hotel. 

Tuesday To the Riins of Galloway where we visit the historic 

harbour village of Portpatrick and Logan Botanic Garden. Here, in 

Scotland’s most exotic garden, you can discover botancal treasures 

from around the world rarely seen in the UK. 

Wednesday In the morning we have free time in Dumfries. If you 

wish you can visit the Robert Burns Centre (entry not included). In

lurks at the bottom of the loch whilst enjoying spectacular Highland 

scenery. We then spend time in Inverness, the City in the Highlands 

with the warmest of welcomes and plenty to see and do. 

Friday We return to the same hotel in Glasgow following a different

Far North of Scotland 

Orkney with Local Guide 

A stunning tour of grand scenery as we explore this 

remote part of Scotland. The tour includes a day trip

Day 5 We catch the morning ferry from Scrabster for the 90 minute

Lunch is at leisure in Kirkwall. We return to the mainland and have a 

late dinner at our hotel. 

Day 6 Fine scenery and views as we travel via Wick and John 

O’Groats to the Castle and Gardens of Mey. The castle was renovated 

and restored by the Queen Mother and this is when the gardens 

were created. We continue to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point 

on mainland Britain. 

Day 7 A truly grand journey through wild and remote countryside as 

we follow the North coast, crossing the beautiful Kyle of Tongue and 

viewing Loch Eribol and others en route to Durness. Later, we cross 

the marvellous Kylescu Bridge, visit the nearby “Memories of 

Childhood” museum and tearoom and then call at delightfully scenic 

Ullapool before our overnight stop in Nethybridge. 

Day 8 More Highland scenery as we travel back to Gretna. 

Day 9 We return home.

Tuesday We catch the morning ferry from Scrabster for the 90 

minute crossing to Stromness on Orkney. Here we have a full day 

tour of Orkney with a local guide. We visit Skara Brae, an amazing 

neolithic village that lay buried by sand for 400 years; the stone ring 

of Brodgar, the delightful chapel built by Italian POWs and the 

remains of battleships scuppered at Scapa Flow. In the evening we 

visit the fascinating Fossil Centre before moving on for an included 3 

course dinner in Kirkwall. Later we board our ship for the overnight 

crossing to Lerwick, Shetland’s capital. 

Wednesday Following breakfast onboard we depart on a tour of 

Shetland’s scenic mainland with a local guide. We visit Jarlshof Viking 

Village and Scalloway Castle. There is free time in Lerwick before reboarding 

the ship for the overnight crossing to Aberdeen (dinner on 

board). 

Thursday Following breakfast on board we dock at Aberdeen. From 

here we travel along beautiful Royal Deeside, passing the Balmoral

West Coast Islands

An epic journey down the beautiful West coast of 

Scotland visiting 4 of its most gorgeous islands. We 

first visit Skye, home to the spectacular Cuillin 

Mountains and a beautiful landscape around every 

corner. Then to the Island is Mull, where the colourful 

houses in Tobermory are much photographed. We 

also take a passenger ferry to tiny Iona and finally

Monday Wonderful Highland and loch scenery as we continue

Skye Bridge to our hotel for 2 nights. 

Tuesday A tour of the Isle of Skye with a local coach and driver. We 

travel via Sligachan, Dunvegan and Skeabost to the Island’s capital 

Portree. The driver will make photostops en route. 

Wednesday We leave Skye on a scenic ferry crossing to Mallaig, 

then travel down the “Road to the Isles” to Fort William and onto 

Oban with lovely coastal and mountain scenery all the way. Oban is 

our base for 2 nights.

Thursday We catch the ferry to the Isle of Mull and enjoy a scenic 

tour of the Isle of Mull viewing its irregular coastline and mountains 

rising 3000ft above the sea. We also take the passenger ferry to Iona 

where there is a short but delightful walk to the abbey. We return to 

Oban in the early evening. 

Friday A beautiful drive along Loch Awe, passing the iconic Kilchurn 

Castle, then along the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond and into 

Ayrshire and our hotel in Irvine for 2 nights, the 4 star Menzies. 

Saturday We take the ferry to the Isle of Arran and complete a

A journey of discovery visiting no less than 8 of 

Scotland’s Western Isles! Some are linked by 

causeway and there are ferry rides between others 

amidst stunning and ever changing scenery. This is a 

circular tour travelling up and back by different 

routes so you see the best of the Scottish mainland

Day 1 We travel to Scotland and the Golden Lion hotel in Stirling. 

Day 2 Through the Cairngorms and Speyside with stops in Pitlochry

Day 3 We catch the ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway on the Isle of 

Lewis. The afternoon is free to explore Stornoway, with its mix of

Day 5 A day of island hopping as we travel south through Lewis and 

Harris, famous for Harris Tweed made by crofters. We continue by 

ferry to the Isle of Berneray and then by causeways to the islands of

crossing to the Isle of Barra, our base for 2 nights.

The Isle of Man is a hidden secret in the Irish Sea

Day 3 Today we explore the beautiful scenery of the Wicklow 

National Park. Our first stop is Powerscourt House and Gardens, and

Day 4 Leaving Bray it’s time to head west across country to Co. 

Clare. We break the journey at Athlone on the banks of the River 

Shannon. Then on to the spa town of Lisdoonvarna, our base for the 

next 3 nights. 

Day 5 To Killimer for the ferry across the River Shannon to Tarbert and 

on to the Foynes Flying Boat Museum – home to a unique chapter in 

the history of aviation and we enjoy a guided tour of the museum. We 

return via Bunratty, home to a beautifully preserved, medieval castle. 

Day 6 From the sheer drop of the Cliffs of Moher to the stark 

moonscapes of the Burren, northern County Clare is a must for all. We 

call at the Burren Visitor’s Centre for an introduction to the Burren, a 

large limestone cap stretching for miles and home to all manner of 

flora and fauna. We continue along the coastal road, through 

Ballyvaughan and Doolin to the southern-most tip of this promontory 

and stand in awe at the sheer might of the Atlantic Ocean, which over 

hundreds of years has carved the 230 metre high Cliffs of Moher. 

Day 7 We depart Co. Clare and in the afternoon step back in time 

aboard the Dunbrody, a full scale replica of a 19th century famine 

ship used to transport the many thousands of Irish emigrants in 

search of a new life abroad. A guided tour of the magnificent vessel 

is conducted by costumed actors. We continue down to Wexford for

While the most celebrated garden in Normandy is 

undoubtedly at Claude Monet’s home in Giverny, it is 

only one of many beautiful gardens in Normandy. As 

well as Monet’s Garden we include two private

Monday By ferry to Calais and we drive to our hotel near Rouen. 

Tuesday We visit two wonderful nearby gardens. The Bret family’s 

garden at Le Clos du Coudray contains a connoisseur’s collection of 

thousands of plant species artfully landscaped in 25 themed gardens. 

After lunch we view Les Jardin d’Agapanthe in the pretty village of 

Cleres. Twisting footpaths take you to different garden ‘rooms’. 

Wednesday We spend the morning in Rouen, an ancient city that 

mixes magnificent Gothic architecture, charming half-timbered 

houses and contemporary bustle, we then travel to the Chateau de 

Champ de Bataille. Known as the Norman Versailles, it has recently 

been restored to its 18th century splendour, complete with parks 

and gardens in the style of Louis XIV. 

Thursday The highlight of the week as we visit Giverny that has 

been carefully restored to the way it was painted by Monet. Its water 

lillies, wisteria-clad bridges and weeping willows reflects his 

inspiration for more than twenty years. Also in the town of Giverny 

is the Musee des Impressionnismes (entry not included). 

Friday Following a stop in Boulogne we make our way to Calais and 

the journey home.

Wednesday Today our journey takes us to Dinant where we board 

a river boat to enjoy a cruise down the River Meuse. We disembark 

and continue to the Castle and Gardens of Freÿr, one of the most 

scenic castles of the Meuse Valley. Enjoy the Renaissance dining 

room, Baroque hall, Rococo chapel and classical gardens, maze and 

orangery. 

Thursday Leaving La Roche the drive is back through Belgium 

stopping for lunch and sightseeing in the medieval town of Ghent

The Rhine Ablaze 

During the autumn grape harvest in the Rhine Gorge 

there are celebrations and firework displays to mark 

the new wine season. We explore Monschau, 

Ahrweiler, Boppard, Koblenz and the beautiful banks 

of the Rhine. On Saturday night we board a river 

boat in Boppard for dinner as we cruise toward the 

Lorelei Rock, where the Rhine River Lights firework 

display will illuminate the night sky. 

Day 1 To Calais and then we travel into Belgium to our overnight 

hotel in Aachen. 

Day 2 A day of beautiful scenery and pretty towns begins with a 

visit to Monschau, a charming town of half-timbered houses, narrow 

alleys, spires and castle. We then travel east through the gentle hills 

of the Eifel Region and along scenic routes to Ahrweiler. This is an 

attractive medieval town encircled by walls and criss-crossed by 

lanes lined with half-timbered houses. From here we continue across 

the Rhine and reach our hotel. 

Day 3 We leave mid morning for a drive up the glorious Rhine. We 

drive past Boppard to have a stop at St Goar, a beautiful village on 

the riverside below the sprawling ruins of Rheinfels Castle. We then 

return to Boppard for free time to explore until we board our boat in 

the late afternoon. During the cruise toward the Lorelei we have 

included a rustic, single course dinner and you will be entertained by 

music and dancing as the firework displays blossom overhead.

Day 4 Today we have a leisurely start before we travel the short 

distance to Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle.

Achensee where we also enjoy a cruise. There will be time to enjoy

Switzerland, Italy & The William Tell Express

Switzerland is well known for its breath-taking 

scenery. We have arranged a twin centred tour for 

you to enjoy – three nights in Meiringen and then 

another three nights in Cadenabbia on Lake Como. 

The link between the two centres is the William Tell 

Express which starts with a beautiful boat journey 

from Lucerne to Fluelen followed by the train 

journey to Locarno and then by coach to Lake Como. 

Day 1 To Calais, then we make our way through Belgium and down 

to Metz to our overnight accommodation. 

Day 2 We travel south around the town of Nancy where the scenery 

really begins as we travel through the Vosges Mountains and join the 

motorway at Colmar. Heading south we enter Switzerland at Basel 

and climb up the beautiful mountains past Lucerne and on to 

Meiringen and our hotel for our three-night stay where we are met 

with a Welcome Drink. 

Day 3 This morning we have a guided walking tour of the pretty 

town. In the afternoon there is time to relax and enjoy this lovely 

little town, famous for its Reichenbach Falls which are accessible via 

the Reichenbach Falls Railway (fare not included). There are also 

pleasant village walks and of course the Sherlock Holmes Museum. 

Day 4 Today we take a drive along the shores of Lake Brienz and 

Lake Thun visiting the town of Adelboden. In the afternoon we visit 

the Ballenburg Open Air Museum with it many centuries-old 

buildings from all over Switzerland as well as many farmyard animals 

and gardens. 

Day 5 Leaving Meiringen after breakfast, we take the short drive to 

Lucerne where we begin our journey on the William Tell Express. We 

board a lake cruiser for a glorious three-hour cruise down to Fluelen, 

with beautiful scenery all around. Just a few yards from the quay 

where we dock is the railway station where we board the train to 

take a stunning, two-hour journey through the mountains to 

Locarno. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you to the hotel at 

Lake Como, where we enjoy a welcome drink before dinner.

Day 6 A free day to enjoy the local area, maybe taking a boat trip on 

Lake Como. The ferry terminal is just below the hotel and there are

Day 7 A full day trip to Lake Maggiore, one of the regions most

of the Borromean Islands and visit the beautiful gardens of Villa 

Taranto.

Lido di Jesolo is a purpose built beach resort on the 

Adriatic Sea close to Venice. This tour gives us two free 

days to enjoy the beach whilst at resort and there are 

3 differing yet fantastic days out to Venice, Verona 

and into the Dolomites to view some of the most 

beautiful mountain landscapes. We take a different 

route to and from Italy both offering great scenery. 

Day 1 To Calais and on to our overnight hotel, the 4 star Best 

Western in Karlsruhe. 

Day 2 We continue through Switzerland and the Alps to Italy, with 

views of Lake Como & Lake Lugano en route, and on to our resort 

hotel in Lido di Jesolo for 6 nights. 


A A full day out to the timeless and romantic city of Venice. We can 

spend our day hopping on and off the water buses along the 

Grand Canal or browse in the lovely shops in the alleyways 

around St Mark’s square. There are naturally plenty of art 

galleries, museums and churches to visit and don’t miss the 

beautifully ornate Basilica of St Marks and the birds-eye view

Oslo, Bergen & The Norwegian Fjords 

This twin centre tour has been arranged to show 

you the best of the beautiful scenery; snow-capped 

mountains, glaciers, lakes and raging waterfalls, 

and give you time in Bergen and Oslo. The two 

main cities of Norway are small, friendly and 

welcoming, and our local guides will give you insight 

into the sights and the Norwegian way of life. For 

your added comfort we have booked outside cabins 

with two lower berths on our two overnight sea 

crossings, and reserved airline-style seating in 

Voyager Class on the Color Line fast crossings. 

Day 1 To Harwich and the DFDS luxury ferry to Esbjerg. 

Day 2 A leisurely start as we cruise into Esbjerg at around midday 

and drive across the Danish countryside to the outskirts of Århus on 

the east coast of Jutland for dinner and our overnight hotel. 

Day 3 Depart Århus and travel north to the port of Hirtshals to 

catch Color Line’s fast ferry to Larvik, southern Norway, arriving mid 

afternoon. Our hotel for the next two nights has superb views over 

Oslo and the fjords. 

Day 4 We spend the day in Oslo, beginning with a guided tour by 

coach and on foot through the major sites of this capital city in its 

glorious position on the fjord. We visit the main street of 

KarlJohansgate, see the imposing City Hall, cathedral and Royal 

Palace. The afternoon is free for your own exploration, or we can take 

you by coach to Bygdøy to the Kon Tiki Museum, where you can see 

the ships sailed by Thor Heyerdahl on his famous expeditions 

(Entrance £6 & not included). 

Day 5 A day of wonderful scenery begins as we travel across 

country passing beautiful fjords, lakes and panoramic vistas through 

Hønefoss, Gol, and Hol. We descend Aurlandsdalen down to Flåm and 

from there the short distance to our hotel at Stalheim, where we 

stay for four nights. 

Day 6 A free day for you to relax. However, you may wish to explore 

the famous ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ excursion which includes a cruise 

along the Aurlandfjord and Naeroyfjord, and a trip on the famous 

Flåm Railway. This is one of the steepest railway lines in the world, 

and is a remarkable feat of engineering as it criss-crosses the valleys 

through tunnels and past breathtaking views. (cost approx. £65 & 

not included) 

Day 7 Today is truly spectacular and begins with the climb from 

Aurland up above the hillside farms and onto the ‘snow road’, the old 

postal route to Lærdal. Once we descend into the old town, we have 

some free time, before crossing the fjord and stopping in Sogndal for 

lunch. Another ferry from Hella to Vangsnes and then to the small 

town of Vik. The final part of the day is over the remarkable Vikafjell 

and back to our hotel.

Day 8 We make our way to Bergen, for a full day excursion to the 

second city of Norway. We have a guided tour and then free time to 

explore. Visit Bryggan – the historic Hanseatic Wharf, the fish market, 

the numerous interesting shops or take the funicular to the top of 

Mount Fløyen (not included) for breathtaking views across the city 

and the fjord beyond. 

Day 9 Today we travel along the north coast of the Hardangerfjord 

and cross at Bruravik before climbing high up onto the 

Hardangervidda to visit the magnificent waterfalls at Vøringfoss. The 

journey continues via Geilo and Kongsberg to our overnight hotel at 

Larvik. 

Day 10 We catch the fast ferry from Larvik to Hirtshals arriving 

around midday. We then drive south through Denmark to Esbjerg and 

catch the evening sailing. 

Day 11 Arriving at Harwich around midday we make our way home.
