Dear Parishioners,
On this Sunday we hear the call of John the Baptist to prepare
the Way of the Lord. The words of John the Baptist
seem very simple and clear: we are to straighten out our
lives. We use the word “straighten” in many ways. Setting
the record straight is about mutual communication and honesty.
When someone looks you straight in the eye, it is all
about being direct, truthful or correct. To straighten up our
home requires us to put things away or to clean up things
that have become messy. In all these ways and many more,
the act of straightening something up is about putting
things in the proper order. At stake is right relationships
with God and with one another.
Reflection Questions:
Are there areas of your life that need to be straightened
with God and with those God has placed your life? What
will that require of you?
…………………………………………………………….
It was great to see our new web-site go live last weekend. I
remain grateful to Fr. Benedykt who, along with Dave
Cleary and Bob Falk, made this their project for the past
year. This new site offers us additional flexibility, ease of
navigation, and the ability to expand ownership of the content.
It will take a few months for us to fully use the features
available to us. Thanks to all who have been part of
the web-site team. I encourage you to visit our web-site
often.
……………………………………………………………..
I would like to acknowledge with great gratitude the executive
committee of the Bringing our Vision to Life Campaign.
Without the hard work of Jim Perkins, Tim Perek,
Frank and Jackie Lapetino, Don Luken, Steve and Cathy
Manst, Joe Corbett, Chris Guth, and Lynn Maloney we
would not be able to celebrate the success of $3.5 million
in pledges. We are so close to our goal for the building of
the new parish center, but in order to break ground on our
new parish center/multitorium, we need to raise an additional
$500,000 in five-year pledges. I ask for your prayers
and support as we strive to be able to break ground in the
coming year. Our campaign is not over. The Master Plan is
solid, and identifies needs to be addressed for our future
growth. I am confident with a little more effort, we can
bring to completion the task that is before us.
……………………………………………………………...
a “Culture of Life from Conception to Natural
Death” through her participation in the political process,
promoting awareness and providing educational opportunities.
For the past eight years, Evelyn has served as the parish
Respect Life liaison while coordinating an active parish-based
ministry, including the annual Baby Bottle Campaign
(which has raised over $50,000 for the Women’s
Center). She has organized parish Respect Life Masses,
candle-light vigils, and submits informative bulletin articles.
Evelyn has a great gift of hospitality that is welcoming
and engaging. Congratulations Evelyn!
THE CHRISTMAS WAFER (Oplatki)
There are many beautiful traditions that surround the
Christmas season. One of those traditions, which comes to
us from Eastern Europe is the sharing of the Oplatki—the
Christmas Wafer. At the main family meal on Christmas
Eve or Christmas Day, the head of the family shares the
wafer with each member, wishing them a blessing and
joyful feast. The other family members then greet each
other in a similar manner. Family unity through Christ is
brought to life through the Oplatki.
We have the wafers available at the Parish Office for a
donation of $1 per envelope. There is one wafer per envelope.
You can pick them up during regular office hours.
Altar bread and wine will be offered
in memory of
All Souls in Purgatory
donated by Theresa & Angelina Belmonte
during the week of December 9, 2012
MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITY
If you would like to remember a deceased relative or
friend in a special way, here is your opportunity. We
are accepting donations for the altar
breads and wine that are used at
Mass for that week. Every week in
the bulletin we will post who the
bread and wine was donated in memory of. Suggested
donation is $25. You can drop off or mail your donation
to the Parish Office, marked “Altar Bread Memorial.”
Make sure to include your name and the name/s
of whom you would like to be remembered. Requests
are published in the bulletin in the order that they are
received.

FAITH FORMATION COMMISSION fosters the life-long growth, of all, in the Catholic Faith.
Invest just five minutes a day,
and your faith will deepen and
grow—a day at a time.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2012—SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Keep your focus
Remember a time in your life when you were homesick or waiting for a
loved one to come home from the hospital, from military service, from a
first real date? Nothing else matters but that one thing—that homecoming.
At the Cancer Survivor’s Garden in Chicago, a plaque bears the
words of Richard Bloch: “The biggest and the hardest single thing that
you will be required to do in the entire battle is to make up your mind to
really fight it. You must, on your own, make the commitment that you
will do everything in your power to fight your disease. No exceptions.
Nothing halfway. . . . When you have done this, you have accomplished
the most difficult thing.” Such passion for God and the fullness of the
kingdom is the heart of Advent.
TODAY’S READINGS: Baruch 5:1-9; Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11;
Luke 3:1-6 (6)
“This is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and
more in knowledge . . . to discern what is of value.”
MONDAY, DECEMBER 10 ADVENT WEEKDAY
Stop and see the flowers
In her memoir Break of Day, the French author Colette recalled a letter
her mother wrote to Colette’s husband declining his invitation to visit.
“The reason,” she said, “is that my pink cactus is probably going to
flower. It’s a very rare plant I’ve been given, and . . . in our climate it
flowers only once every four years.” The willingness to place anything
on hold is rare these days, especially for the sake of a houseplant. Still,
there is much to be said for taking a breath and appreciating the quiet
beauty of the present moment and all that is about to “flower.” It is only
by paying attention that you will be able to say, as Jesus’ followers did,
“We have seen incredible things today.”
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 35:1-10; Luke 5:17-26 (181)
“The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will
rejoice and bloom.”
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11 ADVENT WEEKDAY
Read between the lines
The main document of the Second Vatican Council on scripture was
called the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation. Notice that the
title of this work didn’t include “the Bible” but “divine revelation”—to
point out that scripture is a part of revelation, not all of it. Nonetheless,
this document strongly recommended the study of scripture. “Since God
speaks in Sacred Scripture . . . in human fashion, the interpreter of Sacred
Scripture, in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate
to us, should carefully investigate what meaning the sacred writers really
intended . . . ” (no. 12). God inspired scripture but humans wrote it
down, and so understanding the Bible as a product of human work doesn’t
take you away from what God is saying—as some today think—but
actually deepens your understanding of God’s word.
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 40:1-11; Matthew 18:12-14 (182)
“The word of our God stands forever.”
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
Guadalupe appears to have universal appeal
The Virgin of Guadalupe has to be one of the most oft-honored of all
who are commemorated in the church’s liturgical calendar. In 1754 Pope
Benedict XIV declared Guadalupe patron of New Spain, the name for
Spain’s colonies in North America. In 1895 Pope Leo XIII authorized
coronation of the image of Guadalupe in Mexico. Pope Pius X proclaimed
her patron of Latin America in 1910, while Pope Pius XII declared
the Virgin Queen of Mexico and Empress of the Americas in
1945 and Patroness of the Americas in 1946, and the list goes on from
December 9, 2012
6
there. Guadalupe clearly touches hearts and minds throughout the world,
not only in Mexico. To find out why, read an English translation of the
Nican Mohopua, an early version of the story of her apparitions.
TODAY’S READINGS: Zechariah 2:14-17 or Revelation 11:19a;
12:1-6a, 10ab; Luke 1:26-38 or Luke 1:39-47 (690A)
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13 FEAST OF LUCY, VIRGIN, MARTYR
See the light
The name Lucy literally means “light,” and Saint Lucy is fittingly the
patron saint of sight, blindness, or trouble with the eyes. Jesus is the light
of the world that was first seen by the three wise men who traveled so far
to greet the King in a humble manger. During this season of Advent,
remember that Christ’s light is your everlasting guide. As you light your
Advent candles, look for Christ’s light for understanding and grace in all
you see and do, as Saint Lucy saw Christ in the poor and vulnerable.
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 41:13-20; Matthew 11:11-15
(184)
“That all may see and know, observe and understand, that the
hand of the Lord has done this, the Holy One of Israel has
created it.”
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14
FEAST OF JOHN OF THE CROSS, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Never is heard a discouraging word?
What is the power of words? In our modern world so many words vie for
our attention that we can’t take them all in. Nor would we want to.
What’s needed is a discerning ear such that we can hear words with the
power to transform our lives and our world. Contemplation and prayer
enabled Saint John of the Cross, the great 16th-century Christian mystic,
to listen deeply to God’s word in his life. John lived at a very different
time in history—without the internet or radios or television. Yet each
age places its own demands on human attention. Can we today, like John
of the Cross centuries ago, develop a discerning ear, attuned to God’s
word in our lives?
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 48:17-19; Matthew 11:16-19
(185)
“If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity
would be like a river.”
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15 ADVENT WEEKDAY
Stop and look around
Advent invites you to see ordinary life with special eyes, not only what
you expect but deeply enough that ordinary people and experiences of
life are holy, the stuff of salvation. Advent is a time—stop there! A time.
Snag it! Hold it! Use it! Discover that your daily life and the people in it
are all messengers of God so that one day you will not have to say, “If
only I had seen. If only I had slowed down. If only I hadn’t hustled past
Jesus as I rushed through my day—and my life.”
TODAY’S READINGS: Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11; Matthew 17:9a, 10-
13 (186)
“Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but
did to him whatever they pleased.”
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2012THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
TODAY’S READINGS: Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Philippians 4:4-7;
Luke 3:10-18 (9)
“The Lord, your God, is in your midst.”
IN REMEMBRANCE. . .
It would be hard to imagine a celebration about which more words have been spoken, poems
written, and stories told than Christmas. We share many traditions and know many of the legends
surrounding this Feast. There are legends that speak of cattle in stables falling to their knees at
midnight, birds singing all night long, and trees and plants, especially along the Jordan River, that
bow in reverence toward Bethlehem.
In these merry and holy days, we welcome our Lord and Savior, who comes to us in gentleness
and love. We announce God’s epiphany with giving gifts and greetings, with lights, decorations
and flowers.
This Christmas, parishioners are invited to assist in creating a small yet tangible remembrance
of their family members and/or friends while helping to fund the Christmas flowers and enhance
the parish liturgies.
To participate, please fill our the form below and return it with your donation per memorial. We
suggest a donation of $15 but will honor your remembrance at whatever amount you are comfortable
with. Please make checks payable to St. Edna Church. Donations may be deposited in the Sunday collection basket
(please place in a separate envelope) or dropped off at the Parish Office during business hours.
The names of those you wish to be remembered will be published in the December 23rd bulletin. In order to meet this
publication date, your remembrance must be received by December 10th.
FAITH FORMATION COMMISSION fosters the life-long growth, of all, in the Catholic Faith.
LK 3:1-6
How is Eucharist my bread for the
journey, nourishment for the
“desert” times of my life?
SPRED
From a catechist’s perspective—by Cynthia Jochum
You’ve got a friend…
When adult catechists say “YES” to a commitment of faith sharing within the SPRED community,
they are saying “YES” to being a friend to another person within the larger faith community who happens
to have developmental disabilities. That same, “YES” commitment becomes an extension of friendship to
all the adult catechists of SPRED as well.
It is within the context of friendship that the person with developmental disabilities comes to know Jesus.
We, the community of St. Edna, have a responsibility to each other to be that sign of Christ to our friends. When we
gather, when we are happy, when we receive the sacraments, when we share food, when we hear God’s word, when we
celebrate creation, and when we care for one another, we meet Jesus.
Within the SPRED community of friends and catechists, just being present is the grace filled path that leads the developmentally
challenged and the adults to a deeper experience of God. Together we put aside the outside and enter the
center. Recently, I found it necessary to make a job change. While it was a difficult and life altering transition, the
change afforded me an opportunity to return to SPRED. It is there in the midst of the disabled of our community that I
continually seek and find the connection between what I do in the mundane everyday events of life and our Lord. As a
new parishioner, the ministry gifted me with a sense of belonging to the larger community of St Edna.
The SPRED community shows me again and again, that when we gather, when we are happy, when we receive the
sacraments, when we share food, when we hear God’s word, when we celebrate creation, and when we care for one another,
we meet Jesus. That is the simple message of a Christian life. That is the simple message of SPRED.
We have children waiting to join our group, but cannot without an adult catechist. Please consider saying “YES” to
SPRED.
A friend is waiting!
MATS FOR THE HOMELESS
On November 10th, over 20 people attended a training session to learn how to make
the mats for the homeless. They were eager and enthusiastic. Thanks to all who came
and to those who were there to help teach them.
We have now completed 126 mats which have been delivered to Cornerstone Ministry
in Uptown. Congratulations to Arlene Gagliano and Helen Snider who have made
32 and 28 mats respectively. Great job, ladies!
Those who do the crocheting have asked that you cut the strips 2” wide for the light
weight bags and 1 1/2” for the heavier bags. Make sure the knots are pulled tight,
this makes it easier when crocheting. Thanks to all who have helped with this program, whether bringing bags, making
the plastic yarn or crocheting. We could not have done it without you!
At this time we have no more room to store the plastic bags, please hold on to your donations of plastic bags until
after the 1st of the year! Thank you!
ARE YOU READY?
In Mark’s Gospel there are no descriptions of Jesus’ ancestry or his birth. Instead, Mark jumps right in: “The
beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). Jesus is Hebrew for “the Lord saves” and Christ is
Greek for Messiah (“anointed one”). Anointing was a sacred act conferred on kings. So God is here to save the people
through this anointed one, the descendent of kings and a King himself. Jesus’ arrival is announced by John, the “voice . .
. crying out in the desert” (Mark 1:3). John knows that he is not the Messiah; his task is to announce him. John baptizes
with water, but the one who is to come will give his life for the forgiveness of sins and will baptize his followers with the
Holy Spirit. The question we must ask ourselves is, are we ready to receive this coming savior? To receive him means
being prepared to follow him and do his will.
A St. Edna’s Tradition:
A Hats, Gloves, and Socks Kind of Christmas
Christmas has many traditions associated with it. There are bright lights and ornaments
of every color, that perfect tree, stockings hung on the mantle, Christmas
cards and carols, holly and mistletoe, parties and special dinners, shopping and last
minute shopping, Rudolph, Frosty and, Santa Claus.
The origin of Santa began in the 4 th century with St. Nicholas,
Bishop of Myra, an area in present day Turkey. St. Nicholas was a generous
man, particularly devoted to children. He became the patron
saint of Russia, where he was known by his red cape and flowing
white beard. Throughout Europe, the Feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated
on December 6 with gifts and acts of charity. After the Reformation,
European followers of St. Nickolas dwindled, but his legend
was kept alive in Holland. Dutch colonists brought this tradition with
them to America in the 17 th century. In 1822 Clement Moore composed
the poem “A Visit From Saint Nicholas”, published as “The
Night Before Christmas”.
Although the Santa of today has been stripped of religious affiliation
and significance, his message of generosity and giving is as important as ever. It is
important for both children and adults, not only at this time of the year, but
throughout the year. There is no reprieve for the poor, the hungry, the homeless, and
the lonely. This time of the year is especially difficult for them. Instead of experiencing
the excitement and joy of the holidays, many know only isolation, loneliness and rejection.
It is one more time they are left out and forgotten.
The poor, the hungry, the homeless and the lonely have memories of better times when life
was not so hard and their struggles were not so difficult. We pray that the Christmas star will
shine upon their lives, and they will have some Heavenly Peace this Christmas.
You can help make this happen. St. Edna’s parishioners are invited to participate in “A
Hats, Gloves, and Socks Kind of Christmas”. As the Christ Child was
wrapped in swaddling clothes to keep Him warm, we would like to wrap the homeless in Hats,
Gloves, or Socks. To do this we need your help. In December, I am asking you to place a Hat,
Gloves, or Socks in the bag of food that you so generously give. If you would like to join the
volunteers at St. James on Christmas afternoon, you would be most welcome. Please call Ted
Kain at 312 842-1919 x 214 for more information.
The next food collection is the weekend of December 16, 2012. PLEASE BRING A BAG OF FOOD WITH YOU
WHEN YOU COME TO CHURCH. Also, please make a contribution to St James using the gold envelopes
each month.
Each month the people of St. Edna have responded generously to my request for help by bringing a bag of
food on the third Sunday of every month. Your response has been wonderful during 2012. Thank you so
very much! Please continue your generosity in 2013.
Have a Blessed Christmas!
