Christopher Arnold is the current holder of the Faculty of<br />

Music, University of Toronto award that allows the use of a<br />

fine viola donated through the <strong>Arts</strong> & <strong>Letters</strong> <strong>Club</strong> by former<br />

<strong>Club</strong> member Ken Pratt. This year’s annual Pratt Recital on<br />

Wednesday, <strong>November</strong> 7, will feature Chris playing this<br />

magnificent instrument. He will be joined by other talented<br />

young performers, pianists Susan Lee <strong>and</strong> Jialiang Zhu,<br />

harpist Elizabeth Bawel, <strong>and</strong> flautist Jacky Tam, in a<br />

programme featuring works of Bach, Brahms, Debussy <strong>and</strong><br />

English composer York Bowen.<br />

Music Wednesday, <strong>November</strong> 14, features the passionate,<br />

charismatic young Cuban pianist, Beatriz Boizán. A student of<br />

Alicia de Larrocha, Beatriz is especially devoted to the Latin<br />

American <strong>and</strong> Spanish repertoire, which she loves <strong>and</strong> interprets<br />

brilliantly. Her performance will include works by Lecuona,<br />

Cervantes <strong>and</strong> Albèniz. Come <strong>and</strong> hear this outst<strong>and</strong>ing artist<br />

play works that are part of the very fabric of her being. Olé!<br />

<strong>Club</strong> Night, Monday, <strong>November</strong> 19, brings us a wonderful<br />

opportunity to hear one of the loveliest soprano voices of our<br />

time. Internationally acclaimed soprano Meredith Hall, recipient<br />

of the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award, is<br />

equally at home in opera, oratorio, <strong>and</strong> recital, garnering praise<br />

wherever she performs. She will be featuring an all-Schubert<br />

recital, accompanied by the experienced <strong>and</strong> highly respected<br />

Brahm Goldhamer. This is a night you don’t want to miss!<br />

Music Wednesday, <strong>November</strong> 21, sees us welcome students<br />

from the studio of the very fine pianist Peter Longworth. This<br />

year Peter is pleased to present some participants of his chamber<br />

music programme, who will be featuring works from the violin<br />

<strong>and</strong> piano duo repertoire. Some pretty amazing things start to<br />

happen when fresh talent is mentored by the outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

artistry of one of our great musicians. Join us!<br />

On Music Wednesday, <strong>November</strong> 28, we are delighted to present<br />

prizewinners from the recent <strong>2012</strong> Canadian Music<br />

Competition. This annual event showcases the best <strong>and</strong> brightest<br />

of the up-<strong>and</strong>-coming artists of tomorrow. Enjoy the youthful<br />

charm, energy, <strong>and</strong> highly accomplished musicianship of these<br />

performers as they st<strong>and</strong> poised on the threshold of a life in the<br />

arts—perhaps even poised for greatness.<br />

COME ONE, COME ALL, TO DECK THE HALL!<br />

It’s that time of year again. Willing workers are<br />

needed to decorate the Great Hall, Bar <strong>and</strong><br />

LAMPSroom for the Christmas Season. This year<br />

we’ll start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, <strong>November</strong> 24. A light lunch<br />

will be served in the LAMPSroom between 12:00 noon <strong>and</strong> 1:00<br />

p.m. We should be finished around 3:00 p.m. Questions? Call<br />

Welcome your friends <strong>and</strong> family to the <strong>Arts</strong> & <strong>Letters</strong><br />

<strong>Club</strong> <strong>and</strong> prepare to be delighted <strong>and</strong> enticed by the<br />

<strong>Club</strong>’s talent, just in time for holiday gift giving.<br />

It will be a wonderful, festive opportunity to chat directly<br />

with the <strong>Club</strong>’s artists, writers <strong>and</strong> musicians <strong>and</strong> to buy<br />

their latest works. Light refreshments will be served,<br />

<strong>and</strong> our historic building will be festively decorated.<br />

Help publicize the event by distributing flyers,<br />

which are available at the <strong>Club</strong>!<br />

This event will be open to the public.<br />

Note to Participants: Visual artists should enter work for<br />

the sale in the Small Works Show, to be installed on<br />

Saturday, <strong>November</strong> 24. Tables will also be set up on<br />

Visual artists, participating writers <strong>and</strong> musicians should<br />

Theatre Evening at the Tarragon Theatre<br />

Tuesday, December 4, <strong>2012</strong><br />

A group of <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Letters</strong> members <strong>and</strong> their guests will<br />

meet at the Tarragon Theatre, 30 Bridgeman Avenue, at 7:00<br />

p.m. to hear celebrated mathematician, author <strong>and</strong><br />

playwright Dr. John Mighton introduce his latest play, The<br />

Little Years.<br />

After the talk, we will take our reserved seats in the Tarragon’s<br />

Mainspace for a performance of the play, directed by Chris<br />

Abraham <strong>and</strong> featuring Chick Reid.<br />

The performance will be followed by a private catered<br />

reception with the artists in the rehearsal hall (cash bar).<br />

Tickets $75 per person. Limited to 25 persons; order your<br />

tickets early.<br />
