blazing speed by Warrior
difference in the game.
A botched punt on the
first possession allowed Cle
Disputed shootout
guns down Wolves
1-0 at Royal City
ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN
REPORTER
For the second time in a week Goldendale went to a
shootout to decide an SCAC league match and for the second
time they came out on the short end of things, but this time
the ending was controversial.
The scorebook shows Royal defeated Goldendale 9-8 in a
four segment shootout. The teams combined for just 13 shots
on goal during regulation, although Goldendale had several
attacks that came up short.
According to SCAC rules, the teams then played a fiveminute
overtime period, which also ended scoreless, although
Goldendale had a couple of shots bang off the goal
posts. A second five-minute period also ended tied at zero requiring
the teams to go to a shootout.
The shootout took place in groups of five players from
each team alternating in one-on-one shots against the opposing
goalie. Each team was required to use different players
for each set of five shooters. After three rounds, the
score was tied at seven. Goldendale still had unused players
on the bench while Royal was out of players after three
rounds. The officials required Goldendale to use the players
on the bench for the fourth round while Royal was allowed
to select any five players for their shots. Goldendale Coach
Jimmy Dick notified the officials he intended to protest that
ruling. The first shots were made by both teams. Goldendale
missed the second shot. Royal scored on their second shot
and was ruled the winner.
In protesting the match, Goldendale Coach Jimmy Dick
said that even the third shootout should have allowed repeated
use of players and that allowing one team to reuse
their starters while restricting the other team to reserves
was a wrong decision by the officials.
The loss to Royal drops Goldendale’s league record to 1-5
as they lost earlier in the week to Highland 4-1. Goldendale’s
only goal was early in the second half by Eileen Kelsey.
Goldendale got derailed
last week in their run for supremacy
in SCAC volleyball,
falling in straight sets
to Zillah, 25-20, 25-13, 25-11.
Both teams entered the
match with a 4-0 record in
league play. In fact, Goldendale
had lost just a single
game to a league opponent
this year, prior to the Zillah
match.
The Leopards seized the
momentum by making a
late comeback to win the
opening set. For the balance
of the match, it seemed that
everything the Leopards hit
found its way to the floor.
Klickitat vs TLG
Klickitat started last
week with a 25-5, 25-16, 23-
25, 25-14 win over TLG. The
Mustang-Eagles were ice
cold in the opener allowing
the Vandals to rack up most
of their points from the service
line. TLG had signs of
life in the second game and
were hitting on all cylinders
by the third game,
which they won.
In the final game, Klickitat
scored in bunches with
the aid of 12 TLG errors.
Sarah Ingebo and Nicolle
Oldfield provided the hitting
for the Vandals and
Cassie Clack led the team
from the service line. Ash-
ley Sampson, Tamaira Huffsmith
and Chelsea Cox
were the leading hitters for
TLG.
The Mustang-Eagles had
a bit of healing on Thursday
at Sherman County’s
expense in a 25-20, 25-16, 25-
10 straight sets win. Huffsmith
had seven kills and
Woodall getting most of the
big shots with 13 kills. The
Pirates were led by Jamie
Venema’s 10 kills and one
