Timberwolf runners find
going tough at Apple Ridge
ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN
REPORTER
Highland, Royal and Connell
got the best of Goldendale
runners in a triple, dual
meet held at Cowiche’s Apple
Ridge course, Thursday. Only
the boys scored as a team in
the meet which was dominated
by Highland and Royal.
Highland won 15-48, Royal
won 15-30, and Connell won
15-45 over the Timberwolves.
Will Bowdish was top among
the Goldendale boys, edging
Weston Lewis with a 19:32 to
Lewis’ 19:39. Other runners
for the boys were Mitchell
Anderson (20:38), Thurman
WOLVES from Page 7
lighted by a 33-yard pass from
Lucas Denney to Isaac Messenger
and finished off with
a 4-yard Braydon Ross touchdown.
Cle Elum-Roslyn
struck back quickly thanks
to a completion to Jake Gall
and a 28-yard run by Michael
Newman. Ben Cochran
blocked the conversion and
the score was 13-7 at the end
of the first quarter.
The Timberwolves tried to
answer as they drove to the
Warrior 41-yard line. The
drive stalled on third and six
and Tim Bartkowski downed
a Ross punt at the Warrior 15yard
line. The next drive
would be the beginning of
the end for Goldendale-Klickitat.
Warrior quarterback,
Tyler Kretschman ran the
double wing offense to perfection.
Kretschman was slick
with the ball, giving his
speedy backs, Gall and Newman
a headstart on runs to
the outside. A 21-yard pass to
Grafton Alexander kept the
Timberwolves honest, but
two runs by Newman and
three by Gall softened up the
middle and fullback Mitchell
Millsap rumbled for 30 yards
up the middle almost without
being touched. Newman finished
off the drive with a 5yard
touchdown run.
Elias Briseno had a good
return of the ensuing kickoff
to the Goldendale-Klickitat
40. But two runs netted three
yards and a Denney pass was
tipped incomplete. Ross’s
punt was returned all the
way to the Cle Elum-Roslyn
48, for a 9-yard net punt.
Goldendale-Klickitat’s defense
stiffened with a sack by
Jordan Foley, but Lucas Witte
kicked a 31-yard field goal.
Another good kick return,
this time by Wade Gaston to
the Timberwolf 45 was soon
wasted. On second and five,
Denney was intercepted by
Travis Kretschman. On the
next play, Gall took a screen
pass and flew down the left
sidelines for a 71-yard touchdown,
giving the Warriors a
31-7 halftime lead.
The third quarter started
with excitement as Briseno
(23:32).
Natalie Hurst led a young
group of runners for the
Lady Timberwolves, finishing
ninth in 25:08 on the
three-mile course. Jessica
Lewis was close behind at
25:47. Kailynn O’Leary finished
in 27:06 and Hannah Erickson
crossed the line in
31:21. Lewis is a junior.
O’Leary and Hurst are sophomores
and Erickson is a
freshman.
intercepted Kretschman and
returned to the Warrior 15yard
line. But an end around
by Messenger didn’t fool the
Warriors and two pass attempts
were thwarted and
Cle Elum-Roslyn got the ball
back at their own 25-yard
line. On the second play from
scrimmage, Gall ran a sweep
around the left end and scampered
73 yards for another
Warrior touchdown.
Goldendale-Klickitat was
out-gained in the middle two
quarters 317-36 yards. The
only running plays that
worked were option keepers
by Denney. A pass to Ethan
Enstad took the ball to the 1yard
line and Denney scored
the first of two fourth quarter
touchdowns. Denney’s
second touchdown of the
quarter was set up by a great
kickoff return by Nolin Bare.
Bare, the up-back, took the
ball at the Goldendale 26-yard
line and blasted into a line of
Warriors in the middle of the
field. To the surprise of
everyone, he popped out the
other side of the line and was
off to the races with Warriors
chasing. Bare was
dragged down at the 8-yard
line for a 66-yard return. Denney
finished it off with a 5yard
touchdown run.
The loss puts Goldendale-
Klickitat at 1-2 in league play.
Homecoming is this week.
The Friday game is an important
contest against Naches
Valley for inclusion in the top
four places which qualify for
Some of Washington’s
most popular hunting seasons
will get under way Oct.
15, when hunters take to the
field for ducks, geese and
deer. Other hunting seasons
opening in October include
those for pheasant, quail,
chukar and gray partridge.
Migratory waterfowl
numbers are expected to be
strong this year, said Dave
Ware, game manager for the
Washington Department of
Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
“The wet winter and
spring really benefitted migratory
waterfowl populations,”
Ware said. “As usual,
early hunting opportunities
will be focused on resident
waterfowl, then turn to migratory
birds as more start
arriving in November.”
Big game hunts also look
promising this fall, said
Ware, who expects hunters’
success to be similar to last
year. “Overall, hunters had
a decent season for elk and
deer last fall,” Ware said.
“That should be the case
this year as well.”
Ware notes that area-byarea
Young runners look to be a
factor in B cross country
ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN
REPORTER
When it comes to crosscountry,
young legs seem to
be the name of the game, at
least at Bickleton and Lyle-
Wishram, the class B
schools in Klickitat County
that have runners this year.
Peter Clinton scored two
top 10 finishes last week as
the Bickleton Pirates continued
their development in
preparation for district
cross-country. Clinton was
10th at Zillah with a time of
18:19 on the 5,000 meter
course.
Bickleton has seven boys
on the team this year. Clinton,
Joshua Cummings and
Christian Mittring are the
old hands as juniors. The
rest are eighth and ninth
graders. Teammates Troy
Roberts (eighth grade) and
Brandon Berk (freshman)
were also under 20 minutes
with times of 19:36 and
19:57, respectively, at Zillah.
Also running for the Pirates
were eighth grader, Kane
Lowe (20:07), freshman,
Michael Underwood (23:41),
Cummings (22:22), and Mittring
(39:25).
On Saturday, the Pirates
backed off on distance to
work on speed at a meet in
Pasco. Clinton finished
third on the two-mile course
in 11:46. Roberts and Lowe
finished first and second in
the middle school race, but
their times of 12:03 for
Roberts and 12:40 for Lowe
would have placed them
fourth and 11th in the high
school race. Others who ran
the high school race were
Berk (12:16), Cummings
(13:56), Underwood (14:41)
and Mittring (23:51).
Youth is also the story at
Lyle-Wishram. Michael
Hickman, a freshman, is
running times that put him
at par with the top Bickleton
runners, all whom have a
shot at making it to State
this year.
Hickman was 19th in the
Bridgitte Nelson Invite at
Sorosis Park in The Dalles,
Friday. His time was 19:51 on
the 5,000 meter course.
Also running for the
Cougars were Andrea Martinez
(28:19) and Jocelyn
Knowles (32:34). Martinez is
another eighth grader and
Knowles is a freshman.
