This shop offers only the finest in quality sausages and other
The Deli has a wide selection of European sausages made fresh
on the premises by certified Master sausage maker Joseph Skurek.
operate the store efficiently.
offer a wide selection of delicious meats. Some of these delights
include Honey ham, Moravien meat, smoked salmon, double cold
Quick Thinking Kid
from Kurt Portmann
The cop got out of his car and the kid
who was stopped for speeding rolled
down his window. “I’ve been waiting
for you all day” the cop said. The kid
replied “Yeah, I got here as fast as I
could.” When the cop finally stopped
laughing, he sent the kid on his way
without a ticket.
The Heart Surgeon from Guy LaPlante
A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a
Harleymotorcycle when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon
in his shop. The surgeon was there waiting for the service
manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic
shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, can I ask you a question?
The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the
mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic
straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc,
look at this engine.. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair
any damage and then put them back in, and when I finish, it
works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and
you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically
the same work?"
The surgeon paused, smiled, leaned over and whispered to the
mechanic, "try doing it with the engine running."
The Obedient Wife from Winfried Hillebrand
There was a man who had worked all of his life, had saved all of
his money, and was a real miser when it came to his money.
Just before he died, he said to his wife, "When I die, I want you
to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to
take my money to the after life with me." And so he got his wife
to promise him with all of her heart that when he died, she
would put all of the money in the casket with him.
Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was
sitting there in black, and her friend was sitting next to her.
When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers
got ready to close the casket, the wife said, "Wait just a
minute!" She had a box with her, she came over with the box
and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket
down, and they rolled it away.
So her friend said, "Girl, I know you weren't fool enough to put
all that money in there with your husband." The loyal wife
replied, "Listen, I'm a Christian, I can't go back on my word. I
promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket
with him." You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket
with him!!!!?"
“I sure did," said the wife. "I got it all together, put it into
my account and wrote him a check. If he can cash it, he can
spend it."
Clever Wife from Guy LaPlante
A man called home to his wife and said, "Honey, I have been
asked to go fishing up in northern Quebec with my boss &
several of his friends. We'll be gone for a week. This is a good
opportunity for me to get that promotion I've been wanting, so
could you please pack enough clothes for a week and set out my
rod and fishing box? We're leaving from the office & I will swing
by the house to pick my things up." "Oh! Please also pack my
new blue silk pajamas." The wife thinks this sounds a bit fishy
but being the good wife she is, did exactly what her husband
asked.
The following weekend he came home a little tired but
otherwise looking good. The wife welcomed him home and
asked if he caught many fish? He said, "Yes! Lots of Salmon,
some Bluegill, and a few Swordfish. But why didn't you pack my
new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?"
The wife replied, "I did. They're in your fishing box....."
Understanding Engineers from Leigh Day
Engineers - Take One:
A pastor, a doctor and an engineer were waiting one morning
for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed,
"What's with these guys? We must have been waiting for 15
minutes!" The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never
seen such ineptitude!" The pastor said, "Hey, here comes the
greens keeper. Let's have a word with him." "Hi George! Say,
what's with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't
they?"
The greens keeper replied, "Oh, yes, that's a group of blind
fire-fighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a
fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime." The
group was silent for a moment.
The pastor said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer
for them tonight." The doctor said, "Good idea. And I'm going
to contact my ophthalmologist buddy and see if there's anything
he can do for them."
The engineer said, "Why can't these guys play at night?"
Engineers - Take Two:
Two engineering students were
walking across campus when one
said, "Where did you get such a great
bike?" The second engineer replied,
"Well, I was walking along yesterday
minding my own business when a
beautiful woman rode up on this
bike. She threw the bike to the
ground, took off all her clothes and
said, "Take what you want." The
second engineer nodded approvingly,
'Good choice; the clothes probably
wouldn't have fitted."

The High Cost of Dining Out
by Max Bork
Recently, I hear a lot of talk about the
high cost of dining out, and often
comments like this: “I’m not going to
eat there again, they have raised their
prices, but the food and service is not
any better”.
Stop and think for a moment, what
could have caused the increased prices?
Well for starters, I know my property
taxes have gone up as property values
have increased, and to make matters
worse, property insurance has also
increased quite dramatically. Now lets
translate this into running a restaurant ...
You own a restaurant and the
municipality, you operate in, increases
your taxes, while at the same time
decreases services to the business community, such as garbage
collection. Now you have to arrange for private garbage removal; a new
additional expense. It costs more to drive and insure your vehicle, the
food, beer and liquor products you need to operate your business have
also gone up in price. Then you are informed by your insurance broker
that your property insurance rate has
jumped!
Where will this all end? Simply put,
you the customer will pay, because
there is no other logical answer. The
restaurant owner has no choice but to
increase prices to cover ever increasing
operating costs -- otherwise we shall
not have the option of dining out, and
restaurants will become a thing of the
past. A dreadful thought!
(Here is one customer solution for
consideration: Dine out at Noon time.
Of course the portions are smaller, but so is the price!)
The High Cost of Diesel Fuel?
Just a related thought in passing, why is diesel fuel so expensive in
Canada, when it is by far the cheapest to refine? Due to diesel fuel’s
high prices at the pumps, often higher than low test gasoline, the cost
of living is increasing and affecting us all, as transportation of goods in
Canada (rail or road) is by diesel fuel!
Our government taxes gasoline and diesel at the pumps for road
improvements, I’m told. I wonder just what % of this tax collected
actually goes back into road repair, maintenance and superstructure?
Would someone please enlighten me, I would love to know the %
breakdown.
Winterfest Dance, Sat., Feb. 11 , 2006, Maple Leaf -Almrausch Club Pin Night
featured the “Souper Jazz” Band - A Charity Band
by Sander Mommers
“Souper Jazz” is a jazz band consisting
of non-professional volunteer musicians.
The band is a registered charity organization
which raises funds for soup kitchens and
food banks in the Ottawa area.
“Souper Jazz” was started in 1986 by
Bob Jadis, now retired and living in
Vancouver. In 1988, the band was
incorporated as a registered charity under
the name Souper Jazz Inc. At first glance,
Souper Jazz may seem like any other band
as we perform in public places and at
private functions, but there is one important
difference. We give away all funds we
receive through our activities to help the
less fortunate in our city. The musicians
and all other people involved in the band are
volunteers and nobody gets paid.
As one type of our activities we organize
fundraising performances in shopping malls
or other public places, and arrange for some
volunteers with collection cans, in order to
give the audience an opportunity to donate.
On such occasions, the organization we are
raising funds for, is prominently announced
and displayed, and we typically collect
around $1,000 at these events.
When the band is "hired" for a private
function, our charitable cause is less visible,
but we still donate our "fee" to a soup
kitchen or food bank.
The band has been operating as a charity
band for 20 years now, and in this period it
has raised almost $500,000 for our cause.
Although the Shepherds Of Good Hope on
Murray Street has been the main recipient,
there are others who benefit. We try to
keep the funds in the community where
they were raised. If we organize a
fundraising show in Orleans, for example,
the proceeds will go to the Gloucester
Emergency Food Cupboard, since they are
in that area. The recipient is always a food
bank or soup kitchen because we feel that
food is the most basic need people have.
Twenty years is a long time, and the
volunteer musicians have changed over
time. Every new band member has brought
us new tunes and ideas, but the main
musical focus has remained in the 1920's
and 30's, with "seasonal excursions"
around Christmas time. None of us are
experts at public relations or marketing, and
that is perhaps why despite our 20 years of
existence we are not very well known in
Ottawa.
Bob Jadis once said: "In a lifetime, you
don't often get a chance to make a
difference". The souper jazz volunteers got
that chance and took it.
HBH Footnote: An entertaining evening with a
dedicated volunteer charity jazz band! We hope to
see them again at the MLA club.
Authors: Tessa and Martin Borner
The authors’ book is the story of World
War 2 seen through the eyes of two
people, one English and one German.
authors describe the lives of their
World War 2.
and letters, Tessa writes a poignant
account of bombings and hardships in
Britain and the death of her father in the
Battle of the Atlantic.
Through Martin’s eyes, we learn about
his life during the war, how he survived
the Dresden firebombing, Russian
occupation, his escape from communist
East Germany, how ordinary Germans
suffered and then his first years in
Canada. They describe several family
return visits to East Germany during and
after the communist era.
On Saturday, February 4 , 2006,
S.G. Alpenland Montreal held their
th 38 annual Jägerball at the TMR
Town hall. The whole week leading
up to the Jägerball the weather
was just terrible with a lovely mix
of rain, snow, sleet and freezing
rain. I just kept telling everyone
“let it come now and hopefully it
will be nice on Saturday”. Well
Saturday turned out to be an
absolutely beautiful day and it
brought our supporters out in
droves. We were sold out. Not a
spare chair was to be had in the
hall.
The evening started out early
with the first people arriving at
around 5:50PM. After that it was a
steady stream of people coming
and going. Our President, Mrs.
Anny Mueller started the evening
by thanking all of those who came
out and support us. We had the
pleasure of hosting our great
friends from visiting clubs such as
G.T.V. Almrausch, Poughkeepsie,
New York; Alpenrose
Schuhplattler, Lancaster, G.T.E.V.
Maple Leaf Almrausch, Ottawa,
Ontario and Pam Capelli, from
Round Rock, Texas. We are always
very happy that you all come so far
to join us each year.
Everyone seemed to be in a great
mood and the dance floor was
continuously packed thanks to
“The Internationals” and their great
music.
At 8:30, Alpenland performed the
“Kronentanz” much to the
audiences delight. They were
followed by the Kindergruppe who
did an absolutely awesome job
pleasing the crowd. We would also
like to take this opportunity to
thank the visiting clubs for
performing an Ehrentanz. Our club
as well as our supporters always
appreciate your participation in our
evening.
Late in the evening we held our
raffle with the grand prize of a
$350.00 food basket going to our
very own Boulianne Family. We
thank everyone who contributed to
our raffle and congratulate all the
winners.
The evening just flew by and
before you know it, it was time to
say goodbye again to all our
supporters. We hope they all had a
great time and hope to see them all
again next year. Our group
continued the weekend by getting
together with our out of town
friends on Super Bowl Sunday at
the Berlin Restaurant for the game,
great food and even better
company. Congratulations to the
Steelers on their win. (Sorry Jean-
Guy!)
Thanks again to our friends for
sharing the weekend with us and
we look forward to seeing all of
you again this summer at the
Article by
Nora Schlüter
Before this
interview, the only
things I knew about
Roland Pirker were
his phone number
and the licence plate
of his car: Austria1.
None of these
scanty pieces of
information could
have prepared me for
the view that
presents itself when
Roland Pirker opens
his front door,
jauntily saying: “This
is my studio“: The
light-flooded room
before me offers a trip around the world,
packed onto a hundred square meters.
Austrian and Canadian pennants, old scenic
oil paintings, artwork of numerous Native
tribes, Arabic pottery, African sculptures,
pictures from all parts of the world, and - as
the highlight - a huge polar bear skin
hanging on the wall. And all of these
objects have their own story.
The polar bear, for example, was acquired
by Roland Pirker when he was shooting a
film about Inuit in Alaska. Besides being the
former president of the Austrian Canadian
Council, president of the Austrian Society
Ottawa, president of the Overbrook Charity
Association, and board member of the
Austrian North American Council, he is also
the owner of Rollframe productions and has
been involved in the making of more than
750 movies, many of which have scored
international prizes.
One might wonder how he manages to
schedule all of the above – but as soon as
you have met him, you are no longer
surprised.. Roland Pirker is a live wire, who
enthusiastically talks about his activities and
even more so about the people he has
worked with and stood up for. My challenge
is to turn the vast amount of interesting
anecdotes and information he provides into
a ‘director’s cut’, to put it in cinematic
terms.
Flashback: In 1946, Roland Pirker is born
in Klagenfurt, Austria. He spends his
childhood on a farm in Friesach, a town in
Kärnten. Due to British occupation, he
makes friends with people of different
nationalities at a young age. At the age of
18, he also starts shooting his own movies
about his home, showing them in theatres
in Germany.
While working as an extra in a theatre
group, he meets his future wife, who in
1967 follows him to Canada. The original
reason for the emigration are his relations to
Canadian hockey players who played in
Klagenfurt – Roland Pirker hopes to further
improve his hockey skills in a Canadian
camp. He finds a job in a tire factory that
enables him to fund his stay, but ironically,
it’s the hard physical work in this factory
that causes a serious back injury and puts a
definite end to all his professional sports
aspirations.
Thus, Roland Pirker chooses a different
road: He is one of 22 people chosen for a
place in film making at the Conestoga
College. After three years, only eight of the
original group actually receive their degree.
Roland Pirker is the Honours Graduate, and
the movie he shoots as his final project
receives numerous international awards.
As of 1972, he works as an editor for
CBC in Toronto, but in 1974 changes jobs
and henceforth shoots and produces
documentaries for the National Museums of
Canada. In spite of his excellent work,
however, his job falls victim to both a
financial crisis and the Bilingual Act: In
1981, Roland Pirker is fired fair and square.
Roland Piker - A Man of Many Talents
In the long run, this set-back yet turns out
to be a fluke. He decides to invest his
compensation into his own production
company, Rollframe. Now being an
independent producer, he henceforth
realizes international documentaries about
foreign cultures, endangered customs and
human aid projects. The majority of his
clients are so-called NGOs, nongovernmental
organisations operating
independently.
One of his more recent productions was
developed for Match International Centre,
an Ottawa based women’s organisation
funding women’s rights projects all over the
world. Five of those projects were
documented by Roland Pirker. His film
shows courageous and dedicated women in
Nepal, Peru, Trinidad, Mali and Zimbabwe,
who are actively improving
their own situation as well as
that of their fellow men.
There is also a story behind
the scenes that sets this
documentary apart: After half
of the shooting was done,
they ran out of funds, so
Roland Pirker simply paid the
rest of the production out of
his own pocket. He is no
observer, but has always
been committed to charity,
and has actively raised funds
and has supported SOS
Children’s Villages for a long
time. He could almost be
considered a contemporary
Robin Hood, fighting for
justice by sticking up for
those who are less fortunate
in life.
He considers his cinematic
work as an important means of raising
awareness and creating support among his
audience. As opposed to other directors,
however, he avoids lurid pictures of
people’s misery. According to his motto‚
‘Give respect, get respect’, he wants to
portray the people in his movies with
dignity.
His concept works: The Match
International documentary shows those
women, who used to circumcise young girls
in Mali, putting their rusty knives into a
bowl, promising to give up their profession.
It also shows the patron of a women’s
shelter in Peru describing the situation of
her protégés, while tears are running down
her cheeks. These impressions are by far
more touching than the pictures of horror
with which we are confronted on the news
every day.
It’s local aid projects such as these which
really make a difference, says Roland Pirker:
“Humans are like seeds which only grow in
one area. If you try to replant them, they
might die. That’s why it’s best to help
people right where they live.”
He himself has always kept close ties with
his country of birth, even though – or
perhaps just because – he has been
travelling the whole world on the job. Since
his emigration, he has returned to Austria a
good 50 times, and people in his hometown
will still recognize him in the street, he says.
At the same time, Roland Pirker tries to
bring a part of Austria to Canada, and in
doing so seeks to represent both countries
to the same degree.
Since 1994, he presides over the Austrian
Society Ottawa – no other president before
him has served for such a long time. The
Society offers immigrants a forum and an
opportunity to celebrate their culture. It is
also involved in the organisation of
charitable events and supports Germanspeaking
initiatives such as radio and TV
Roland Pirker
17 - The Hofbräuhaus News March - April 2006
programs, magazines and the German
Language School.
Still, it would have been unlike Roland
Pirker to keep things confined to the Ottawa
area. In 1994, he was a founding member
of the Austrian Canadian Council, an
umbrella organisation for Austrian clubs all
over Canada. In order to offer the
decendents of immigrants an opportunity to
become involved, even if they have no
command of the German language, he
created the Friends of Austria Ottawa, an
organisation for young people of Austrian
origin. Although they have no first hand
experience of their country of origin, Roland
Pirker is confident that in spite of a few
difficulties, those young people will keep
their cultural heritage alive in Canada.
There are two aspects of
his work that are particularly
important to Roland Pirker:
Firstly, he strives to improve
the Canadians’ image of his
native country. He says:
Austria still suffers from her
past, which came to the
forefront during the
Waldheim affair and Haider’s
coalition government. Every
expatriate Austrian felt
attacked and tarnished by
these accusations. The
Austria1 licence plate on his
car, for example, has been
responsible for scratch marks
left by someone who
obviously was angered, still
remembering the past, or did
not agree with the directions
of Austrian politics.
Pirker thus wants to raise
people’s awareness of the
remarkable share Austrians have contributed
to Canadian society.
The second affair of the heart is his
commitment to the members of his society.
The list of charity events is impressive, but
his dedication to help people extends to a
personal level as well. Due to his excellent
connections to politicians of both countries,
he has helped many immigrants in regaining
their Austrian citizenship.
The polar bear on the wall of the studio
has long left such mundane matters behind.
His black button eyes absently stare at the
blue skies over Ottawa. Fade-out.
German Television Network Herz TV and
the changing landscape of television
Toronto (rap) The fertile influx of immigrants has
created a huge television market, which media
companies have rushed to tap. Currently nine
channels from CITC dubbed the “Great Wall” package
are awaiting approval before the Canadian Radio and
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to serve 1,
2 Million ethnic Chinese in Canada with about
510,000 in the Greater Toronto area.
Thanks to the efforts of the enterprising and
energetic Paul Schneider, German Television is
expected to be available to the viewers by the end of
May or June of 2006. For a moderate fee not
determined yet but likely not to exceed $15.00 p.
month viewers can get connected to German
spectrum of programs covers news, entertainment
Hi Friends, on
Tuesday March 28
the Concordia Club
in Kitchener is
hosting an amazing
evening, featuring
Edith Prock,
Christian & Romy
performers from
Germany and Die
Mooskirchner from
A u s t r i a
(Steiermark). The
program starts at
7:30 pm.
It's being
advertised as a
Spring Concert
during the week, and well worth your
time and effort to be there (even those
from far away as the USA).
I have heard Die Mooskirchner live
on two separate occasions in Austria
and they are the best band I've heard!
Very versatile, entertaining and lots of
fun! It is not very often that a top
quality band like this comes around.
So, if you're interested let me know
and I can give you more info or you
can go directly to the Concordia Club
website and see for yourself. Hope to
see you there, Eric Offack.

Valley Proud of Rhoda’s Son
By Max Bork
Bryan Murray was raised in Shawville Que., and has four brothers and
five sisters. He is the son of Clarence and Rhoda Murray. Bryan’s mother
Rhoda is the daughter of the late John Schwartz of Ladysmith Quebec.
Bryan taught school (Phys Ed) in Shawville and was a former student
of MacDonald College at Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, near Montreal, where
he spent four years as the athletic director and
coach. Bryan and his wife, Geri, have two
daughters, Heide and Brittany.
th
On June 8 , 2004, Bryan Murray left as GM
of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to be named
head coach of the Ottawa Senators. Bryan
brings with him discipline, a deep passion and
knowledge for the game of hockey. Regardless
of what his player’s salary is, if they do not
play hard, fast and smart, they will not play,
and may find themselves riding the Binghamton
bus. Senators owner Eugene Melnyk got in
Bryan Murray someone with a strong
commitment and desire to win the Stanley Cup.
Bryan also brings a welcome sense of (Irish)
humour that will catch some players and media
off guard. Needless to say, this publisher (also
born in Shawville) of the HBH News is very
proud of Bryan’s accomplishments. I wish him Bryan Murray
well in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Ottawa Senators Head Coach
Ottawa, where it belongs! GO SENS GO!
Bryan Murray’s Coaching & Managing Summary
After college Bryan coached five years in the central junior hockey league winning
four championships/ 1973, CJHL Pembroke Lumber Kings, Centennial Cup
finalists/ 1976, CJHL Rockland Nationals Centennial Cup champions/ 1979-80,
WHL Regina Pats, Memorial Cup champions/ 1980-81, AHL Hershey Bears, best
record in 40 years/ 1980-81, named minor league coach of the year by The
Hockey News/ 1982-90, (1981 Nov.11) head coach of the Washington Capitals/
Since August 1st, 1998, 40-year-old
the mandate to provide personal
