t would seem that success has a
minor down side.
Acura, Honda’s premium brand,
produces so many vehicles that perform
far above and beyond expectations
that the range-topping RL is being ignored
while buyers pour over the rest of the fleet.
Some critics blame the car’s understated
styling for the modest sales numbers. Others
say it’s the lack of serious V8 power that
most of the RL’s competitors make available.
In response, Acura’s minders have resolutely
dug in and rolled up their sleeves to
transform their competent
flagship sedan into something
it just isn’t right now:
popular.
The optics of this plan
are looking better all the
time, however. Big and
thirsty cars, something both
Honda and Acura have stridently
avoided building, are
rapidly falling out of favor
as environmental concerns,
along with sharply rising
gas prices, conspire to suck
the life out of V8 sales elsewhere.
The current RL,
which has been around
since the 2005 model year, shows that buyers
can still wallow in luxury and keep
more cash in their wallets at the same time.
The visual changes for the 2009 model
year are most evident from the front where
a shield-like “power plenum” grille has been
fitted to the nose, a design feature common
to most Acura models. Both bumpers have
also been restyled and new headlights and
taillamps have been added. There’s also a
lightweight aluminum hood that improves
forward visibility and reduces drag while a
reshaped trunk lid reduces aerodynamic
lift, which aids stability.
The suspension also receives a makeover
for 2009, including stiffer springs, stabilizer
bars and subframe plus a new 18-inch
wheel-and-tire package that replaces last
year’s 17-inchers.
The RL’s standard all-wheel-drive system,
which actually speeds up the outside
rear wheel in a turn for greater stability,
has been revised to respond more rapidly to
road conditions and driver input.

Inside, the 2009 RL comes with new
gauges and accessory controls and an available
wood trimmed steering wheel. Additional
sound deadening material helps keep
road noise at bay, assisted by an active system
that electronically cancels intrusive
sounds using the audio-system speakers.
What should sound just fine to RL buyers
is a new 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6
that builds 271 pound-feet of torque. The
outgoing 3.5 delivered 290 horses and 256
pound-feet. The new car does suffer a twomile-per-gallon
highway-rating penalty (estimated),
which is now 22 mpg. City
consumption remains unchanged at 16
mpg.
A five-speed automatic stays on as the
RL’s sole transmission choice, but steeringwheel-mounted
paddle shifters have been
added, supplementing
the console-mounted
gear
selector.
The RL is
known for arriving
loaded to the
roofline and the
2009 version carries
on that tradition
with lots of
luxury and techno
content. Among the
most notable is
dual-zone climate
control with a
satellite-based system
that tracks the position of the sun in
relation to the vehicle and adjusts the temperature
and ventilation level on either side
of the cabin to compensate for the heat generated
by the suns rays. Also standard is a
perforated leather interior, 10-way power
front seats with six-position heating and
cooling, power-retractable rear headrests,
heated outside mirrors with reverse-gear
tilt-down (to help when backing up), power
tilt and telescoping steering wheel, keyless
entry and start, power moonroof and rear
sunshade and a 10-speaker Bose-brand
audio package.
Among the few options is a navigation
system as well as adaptive cruise control
that maintains a safe distance from the vehicle
in front.
As a further incentive, the 2009 RL’s
price has been lowered by about $2,500.
That, plus the significant physical and mechanical
improvements should finally earn
this Acura more than a passing glance on
the sales floor.
