t would seem that success has a<br />
minor down side.<br />
Acura, Honda’s premium brand,<br />
produces so many vehicles that perform<br />
far above and beyond expectations<br />
that the range-topping RL is being ignored<br />
while buyers pour over the rest of the fleet.<br />
Some critics blame the car’s understated<br />
styling for the modest sales numbers. Others<br />
say it’s the lack of serious V8 power that<br />
most of the RL’s competitors make available.<br />
In response, Acura’s minders have resolutely<br />
dug in and rolled up their sleeves to<br />
transform their competent<br />
flagship sedan into something<br />
it just isn’t right now:<br />
popular.<br />
The optics of this plan<br />
are looking better all the<br />
time, however. Big and<br />
thirsty cars, something both<br />
Honda and Acura have stridently<br />
avoided building, are<br />
rapidly falling out of favor<br />
as environmental concerns,<br />
along with sharply rising<br />
gas prices, conspire to suck<br />
the life out of V8 sales elsewhere.<br />
The current RL,<br />
which has been around<br />
since the 2005 model year, shows that buyers<br />
can still wallow in luxury and keep<br />
more cash in their wallets at the same time.<br />
The visual changes for the 2009 model<br />
year are most evident from the front where<br />
a shield-like “power plenum” grille has been<br />
fitted to the nose, a design feature common<br />
to most Acura models. Both bumpers have<br />
also been restyled and new headlights and<br />
taillamps have been added. There’s also a<br />
lightweight aluminum hood that improves<br />
forward visibility and reduces drag while a<br />
reshaped trunk lid reduces aerodynamic<br />
lift, which aids stability.<br />
The suspension also receives a makeover<br />
for 2009, including stiffer springs, stabilizer<br />
bars and subframe plus a new 18-inch<br />
wheel-and-tire package that replaces last<br />
year’s 17-inchers.<br />
The RL’s standard all-wheel-drive system,<br />
which actually speeds up the outside<br />
rear wheel in a turn for greater stability,<br />
has been revised to respond more rapidly to<br />
road conditions and driver input.<br />

gauges and accessory controls and an available<br />
wood trimmed steering wheel. Additional<br />
sound deadening material helps keep<br />
road noise at bay, assisted by an active system<br />
that electronically cancels intrusive<br />
sounds using the audio-system speakers.<br />
What should sound just fine to RL buyers<br />
is a new 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6<br />
that builds 271 pound-feet of torque. The<br />
outgoing 3.5 delivered 290 horses and 256<br />
pound-feet. The new car does suffer a twomile-per-gallon<br />
highway-rating penalty (estimated),<br />
which is now 22 mpg. City<br />
consumption remains unchanged at 16<br />
mpg.<br />
A five-speed automatic stays on as the<br />
RL’s sole transmission choice, but steeringwheel-mounted<br />
paddle shifters have been<br />
added, supplementing<br />
the console-mounted<br />
gear<br />
selector.<br />
The RL is<br />
known for arriving<br />
loaded to the<br />
roofline and the<br />
2009 version carries<br />
on that tradition<br />
with lots of<br />
luxury and techno<br />
content. Among the<br />
most notable is<br />
dual-zone climate<br />
control with a<br />
satellite-based system<br />
that tracks the position of the sun in<br />
relation to the vehicle and adjusts the temperature<br />
and ventilation level on either side<br />
of the cabin to compensate for the heat generated<br />
by the suns rays. Also standard is a<br />
perforated leather interior, 10-way power<br />
front seats with six-position heating and<br />
cooling, power-retractable rear headrests,<br />
heated outside mirrors with reverse-gear<br />
tilt-down (to help when backing up), power<br />
tilt and telescoping steering wheel, keyless<br />
entry and start, power moonroof and rear<br />
sunshade and a 10-speaker Bose-brand<br />
audio package.<br />
Among the few options is a navigation<br />
system as well as adaptive cruise control<br />
that maintains a safe distance from the vehicle<br />
in front.<br />
As a further incentive, the 2009 RL’s<br />
price has been lowered by about $2,500.<br />
That, plus the significant physical and mechanical<br />
improvements should finally earn<br />
this Acura more than a passing glance on<br />
the sales floor.
