Dr. Tim Sellnow, communication professor, is the FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE from
North Dakota State to the North Central Conference and the NCAA. Sellnow was appointed to the position in the
summer of 2003. His phone number is (701) 231-7632.
This Is North Dakota State University
For more than 100 years, North Dakota
State University has been a key player in
North Dakota’s development.
It is proudly described as an “economic,
educational, and cultural engine.” As the
state’s first land-grant university, it has a
strong heritage of providing instruction,
research and public service to North Dakota,
the region, the nation, and the international
community.
With humble beginnings, NDSU was
established on March 8, 1890, in a wheat field
northwest of Fargo. Five faculty members
were on hand as the first class of 30 students
attended a winter agricultural course. The
construction of Old Main was completed in
1892.
Now, the university educates more than
11,500 students and has more than 500 faculty
and academic staff. Instruction is offered in 97
bachelor’s degree programs, 52 master’s degree
programs, and 37 doctoral and professional
programs through nine academic units –
Agriculture; Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences; Business Administration; Engineering
and Architecture; Human Development and
Education; Pharmacy; Science and Mathematics;
University Studies; and the Graduate
School.
The school’s educational opportunities
attract students from across the nation and
around the world. During the fall 2002
semester, students came to NDSU from all 53
North Dakota counties, 40 states and 58
foreign countries.
NDSU has more than 90 buildings on its
47 square block main campus, which are valued
at approximately $200 million. The university
maintains almost 18,500 acres off campus for
agricultural research, where important work
that has profound and lasting impact on the
state’s major industry is conducted.
The NDSU Extension Service conducts an
ambitious continuing education program, which
involves some 50,000 North Dakotans
annually.
Since its earliest days, NDSU has stood
for quality education, research and service.
That’s a statement to which its more than
69,000 living alumni will attest.
Ellis and his wife, Linda, who types playby-play
accounts of Bison football games, have
a son, Joshua, a daughter, Nicole, and two
granddaughters, Anika and Jasmine.
When he came to North Dakota State
University in the summer of 2001,
GENE TAYLOR inherited a
department surrounded
by a
whirlwind of
questions.
In his first year
as the director of
athletics at North
Dakota State, Taylor
was asked to
spearhead a comprehensive
study and
evaluation of the
Bison athletic department.
One year after NDSU’s push for men’s
and women’s ice hockey failed to gain
community support, the Arizona native made a
different, more daunting recommendation.
Taylor, with roughly a year’s worth of
research in his pocket, gave NDSU President
Joseph Chapman the thumbs-up to promote
NDSU’s 16 intercollegiate teams to Division I
status.
Beginning with the 2004-05 season,
NDSU will be a full-fledged Division I program
faced with building dollars and talent to
continue the winning tradition NDSU has
owned for so long at the Division II level.
Taylor himself knows how to work from
the bottom up. A student assistant to the
associate athletic director in his undergraduate
days at Arizona State University, Taylor came
to NDSU after a 15-year stint at Navy (1986-
2001) as an administrative assistant, assistant
ticket manager, ticket manager, assistant
athletic director for tickets and operations, and
associate athletic director.
A 1980 graduate in business management
from Arizona State, he received his master’s
degree in sports administration in 1985 from St.
Thomas University in Florida.
Taylor worked in the ticket office at
Southern Methodist University in 1985-86
directly before joining the Naval Academy and
was in the private restaurant business before
that for five years.
His tenure at Navy included serving as the
commissioner of the five-team Collegiate Sprint
Football League that includes Army, Navy,
Penn, Princeton and Cornell.
Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the
parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared.
titles (1987-1999) and 19 of the last 21
outdoor crowns. He has also coached a
total of 178 NCAA Division II All-America
performances including four individual
competitors who have won 10 national
championships headed by seven-time
NCAA Division II national champion
and 1991 Drake Relays 10,000 meter
champion Doug Hanson.
Larson’s indoor track & field
success includes 13 NCC titles and
six runner-up finishes. NDSU has
participated in all 17 NCAA
Division II national indoor meets,
finishing fourth once, fifth twice,
sixth once and seventh once.
NDSU’s outdoor squad has
been even more successful,
capturing the NCC crown 20 times.
In his reign, the Bison have placed
no worse than third. North Dakota
State has had success at the Division
II national meet as well. NDSU has
finished in the top 10 five times
including a sixth-place finish in 1991,
its best at the national meet.
The head cross country coach,
he has coached nine cross country
athletes to 13 NCAA Division II
All-America awards.
The North Central Conference
was nothing new to the coach when
6/Bison Track & Field
he took over the Bison in 1979. While
competing for conference rival South
Dakota State University (1971-76), Larson
captured two All-America awards and
seven NCC championships in track & field.
He set three league records and still holds
a share of the retired 600-yard indoor mark
of 1:11.90 set in 1975. Larson captured his
All-America honors in the 400-meter
intermediate hurdles in 1972 (6th) and 1975
(4th).
The 50-year-old Larson, a native of
Madison, SD, holds a bachelor’s degree in
physical education from South Dakota
State and a master’s degree in physical
education from Minnesota State
University-Moorhead. He coached at
Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, prior
to joining the Bison.
Larson, a 38-time Coach of the Year at
various levels, was the 1998 recipient of
South Dakota State’s Ralph Ginn Award
for Coaching Excellence and is a member of
the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Hall of
Fame.
NDSU RETURNS 20 of its 29 individual placewinners from last year’s North Central Conference outdoor meet. The
Bison used 47 individual place finishes and two relay titles to set a school and league outdoor record for team points with 306 1/2.
Strong, Balanced Bison Ready For Last Run At NCC Titles
Expect more of the same from North
Dakota State in men’s track & field this
year. Depth, talent, balance and
experience--it’s all there again.
The Bison have been nothing less than
excellent in past years, winning 20 outdoor and
13 indoor North Central Conference championships
under the direction of Don Larson.
In his 25th year as the NDSU coach,
Larson will be guiding the Bison through the
school’s final year of Division II and NCC
competition.
North Dakota State is set to go out with a
bang. The Bison return 20 of 29 individual
placewinners from last year’s NCC outdoor
title-winning squad that posted a league record
for team points.
Two of the best multi-event athletes in the
country highlight this year’s squad.
Combined with balance in the running
events and a young crew in the field events
capable of scoring points, the Bison are not
only a force in the North Central Conference,
but a team capable of qualifying several athletes
for NCAA championships.
MULTI-EVENTS: Defending NCAA
decathlon champion Nathan Schmidt
(Redwood Falls, MN) highlights a strong trio
of returners. Schmidt is the odds-on favorite to
become the first four-time North Central
Conference decathlon champion. He has been
the league runner-up in the pentathlon twice in
his career.
Andrew Aakre (Stephen, MN) was
runner-up in the NCC decathlon last year and
placed third in the country. Aakre is the Bison
Sports Arena pentathlon points record holder.
Kyle Herman (Bismarck, ND) gave the
Bison a strong third punch last year after
transferring from Northern Iowa. Herman was
sixth in the NCC decathlon and ninth in the
NCAA last year. He was third in the conference
pentathlon.
DISTANCES: The Bison have talent
from 800 to 5,000 meters including a pair of
cross country All-Americans in Darik Hoff
(Bismarck, ND) and Chris Perleberg
(Jamestown, ND).
Hoff is back from a redshirt year and will
run anywhere from 800 to 5,000 while
specializing in the longer treks. Perleberg will
run 3,000 and beyond and be the favorite in the
steeplechase when the outdoor season arrives.
Seven-time All-American Andy Moen
(Morris, MN) will try to close out his career in
style. In his sixth year with NDSU, Moen will
be eligible only in the outdoor season, but the
Bison will take that. Moen should be a
standout at 800 meters and see a lot of relay
action. He has been part of two championship
3,200-meter units at the Drake Relays and five
North Central Conference championship
relays.
The Bison will get good support from
returners Jake Januszewski (Perham, MN),
Chris Hagan (Jamestown, ND) and Jedd
Danielson (New London, MN). Januszewski
was close to an All-America finish at the 2003
national cross country meet.
And, it appears NDSU has a strong
freshman class that could make waves.
Chad Bergan (Valley City, ND), Greg
Liebl (Montevideo, MN) and Eric Palmquist
(Warroad, MN) will look to contribute in their
first year with the Herd. Bergan won two state
cross country titles in high school and was
North Dakota’s “Mr. Cross Country” in 2002.
Liebl won a state title in Minnesota and was a
four-time placer.
SPRINTS/HURDLES: Without doubt,
North Dakota State’s success begins in the
sprints. The one-two punch of juniors Allen
Burrell (Aurora, CO) and Marques Johnson
(Milwaukee, WI) should put the Bison at the
top of the conference and among the best in the
nation in the short sprints. The duo flipflopped
double championship performances at
last year’s NCC meets (Johnson winning the
60 and 200 indoors and Burrell the 100 and 200
outdoors).
Jared Essler (Minot, ND) will handle the
duties at 200 and 400 meters and be an integral
part of the relay units along with Academic
All-American mid-distance performer
Terrance Wolbaum (Bismarck, ND). Look
for the emergence of Reece Vega (St. Charles,
MN) in this area as well. Vega ran strong as a
true freshman and is capable of helping the
Bison to the national meet in the relays.
Peter Stuart (Blaine, MN) will be the ace
hurdler in his third year. A five-time conference
placewinner, Stuart can do it at any
distance indoors or outdoors. Depth in this
department is the question.
Five-time NCC placewinner Ben Lee
(Fargo, ND) is back from a redshirt year.
Aakre will probably help out on the short track
indoors, and Schmidt will be a contributor in
the outdoor hurdles, where he has been a
conference placewinner three times in the 110
and 400-meter hurdles.
JUMPS: North Dakota State returns
three-time NCC placewinner Ryan Lesnau
(Garfield, MN) in the high jump, but then there
is some uncertainty.
Johnson has placed in the NCC indoor
long jump for two consecutive years in addition
to his sprinting duties, and he will be counted
on for more time in the sand pit again this year.
Junior Matt Stockert (Dickinson, ND)
may become the top triple jumper early on
with the absence of defending outdoor league
champion Matthew Gordon-Jackson
(Minneapolis, MN), who is recovering from a
leg injury and will not be back in time for the
indoor season. Stockert can tickle the 45-foot
mark and that may be good enough for points
in conference action.
Much of Aakre’s talent lies in the triple
jump, and he will contribute greatly in that
area. Schmidt can take on double duty in the
long jump and high jump.
The return of two-time NCC placer
Donte Pettis (Milwaukee, WI) in the high
jump will be crucial, but that may be a while.
Pettis walked on to the Bison men’s basketball
team and may not be back until March.
POLE VAULT: The top job in the vault
will be up for grabs between Academic All-
American Marc Steckler (Fargo, ND) and
Herman.
Steckler has neared 16-5 in his career and
is a five-time league placewinner with the pole.
Herman has concentrated on the vault outside
of his multi-event duties and is one of the best
the Bison have to offer.
Dan Otis (Devils Lake, ND) is next in
line. Otis has surpassed the 16-foot mark and
is showing signs of climbing further.
THROWS: Pat Morgan (Dilworth,
MN) is the most successful returner here with
five placefinishes in the North Central
Conference. He will throw the weight and shot
all year and mix in the hammer throw outdoors.
John Christensen (Mercer, ND) and
Ross Kramer (Wishek, ND) are ready to move
into the spotlight after two years of prep work.
Both will throw the weight, shot, disc and
hammer.
Darren Clabo (Brainerd, MN), Reid
Conlon (Dickinson, ND) and walk-on Rob
Mamula (West Linn, OR) give the Herd
outstanding depth in the throws.
The lineup of North Dakota throwers
continues with defending NCC javelin
champion Chad Oukrop (Dickinson, ND) and
Andrew Mauch (Hankinson, ND).
Freshman Ben Clooten (Fairbanks, AK)
may challenge for action in his rookie year.
JOHN BODINE is one of two athletes in North Central Conference outdoor history to sweep two
events four straight years. Bodine’s titles came in the long jump and 200 meters from 1983 to 1986. In addition,
Bodine ran on the Bison 400 relay team that swept four straight titles, and he is the only NCC athlete to win
crowns in three different events over four consecutive seasons.
NDSU is one of the elite schools in the country in producing NCAA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
winners. Twenty-eight Bison have earned scholarships since the program was initiated in the 1960s. That ranks NDSU among
the top 30 in the nation—all divisions—and second among Division II schools. Five of those 28 have come from the men’s
track program.
NCAA Postgraduate Scholars
Five former North Dakota State University track athletes have
received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships to further their
educations. The financial grant is based on outstanding contribution
on the athletic field and academic excellence in the
classroom. Sprinter John Bodine (1983-86), distance ace Doug
Hanson (1987-91), decathlete Arden Beachy (1990-93), pole
vaulter/decathlete Ryan McGlynn (1992-96), and distance runner
Heith Janke (1995-99) were those recipients.
Representatives of colleges and
universities in North Dakota,
South Dakota, Iowa,
Nebraska, and Minnesota met in the
late Fall of 1921 in Chicago to
consider the formation of what was
to become the North Central
Intercollegiate Athletic conference.
There were representatives
from nine institutions at the
meetings: North Dakota Agricultural
College (now North Dakota
State
University),
North Dakota
University,
State
University of
South
Dakota, South Dakota State
College, Morningside College, Des
Moines Municipal University,
Nebraska Wesleyan University,
College of St. Thomas at St. Paul,
and Creighton University.
Shortly after the conference
began, it met with some rough going
as four charter members withdrew.
Des Moines Municipal was first,
dropping out after the 1926 season.
Nebraska Wesleyan severed
relationships after the season of '27.
In 1928, St. Thomas and Creighton
also withdrew. It was not until 1935
when Omaha University was allowed
to join the conference. In 1936,
Iowa State Teachers College (now
the University of Northern Iowa)
was admitted and in 1941 Augustana
College of Sioux Falls was allowed to
become a member of the conference.
Omaha withdrew from the
conference in February of 1943,
leaving the conference membership
as it stood until 1968--Morningside,
Northern Iowa, North Dakota State,
North Dakota, Augustana, South
Dakota State, and South Dakota.
At the fall meeting in 1968,
Mankato State College (now
Minnesota State University-
Mankato) was admitted to the NCC.
The University of Nebraska-Omaha
(formerly Omaha U.) was readmitted
in the spring of 1976.
Mankato State was dropped from
the conference at the end of the
Spring in 1977 and Northern Iowa
left the league in the Spring of
1978.
The University of Northern
Colorado became the eighth
member of the NCC in January of
1979. Mankato State and St. Cloud
NDSU’s LUKE PFEIFER, at right, won three NCC indoor titles (1998-2000) in the 55-meter
hurdles and four consecutive outdoor titles (1997-2000) in the 110-meter hurdles. Pfeifer was also a fourtime
NCAA Division II All-American and set the school record in the 110-meter hurdles (:14.00) in 2000.
The North Central Conference
State were admitted in 1981 to bring
the membership of the NCC to 10.
The league contracted to nine
teams in 2002-03 when
Morningside left after 80 years as a
member. Northern Colorado moved
up to Division I after the 2002-03
season to drop the league to eight
teams. NDSU and SDSU will move
up to Division I in 2004-05, but
Minnesota-Duluth will move in to
put the NCC at seven members.
Despite its state
of flux, year-in and
year-out the North
Central Conference
is one of the
toughest NCAA
Division II leagues in
America. The league has been
represented in a postseason bowl
game every year since the NCAA
opened college division football
bowl contests except 1971 and
1974. North Dakota State has
captured the national football crown
five times since 1983 and eight
times since 1965. Northern
Colorado won back-to-back titles in
1996 and 1997, and North Dakota
claimed the 2001 national grid
crown.
South Dakota, South Dakota
State and North Dakota have won
national championships or placed
among the top four in basketball
and have been perennial powers.
North Dakota State (1988,
1998, 2000, 2001) and Nebraska-
Omaha (1991) have won national
wrestling titles and the league
constantly has five or six teams
ranked among the top 15 in the
nation.
The league has produced many
All-Americans and national
champions in track, cross country,
baseball and swimming.
The NCC is strong in women’s
programs. North Dakota State has
won five NCAA basketball
championships and UND has won
two over the last 11 years, and
South Dakota State won the 2003
title.
NDSU and UN-Omaha have
won national softball titles and the
NDSU track team won the 2002
indoor national crown and has been
a national power the last four years.
North Dakota State University has a 93 percent rate of EMPLOYMENT FOR GRADUATES, according
to the 2003 Annual Employment Report released by the NDSU Career Center. Approximately 1,300 students were surveyed
upon graduation in 2002-2003. Almost 950 said they were employed and more than 250 were attending graduate school.
North Dakota State
University is on the
move—transforming
and emerging as a leader
among its land-grant peers.
Accepting President
Joseph A. Chapman’s challenge
to rise to the next level,
departments across campus are
working
diligently to
enhance and
further
develop
NDSU’s
reputation for
strong
academic and
research
programs.
Progress
is evident at
nearly every
turn. As
Chapman said
in his 2002
State of the
University Address, “These
are truly exciting times for
scholarship and research at
this institution. The opportunities
that lie before us will help
to create a future that will
benefit our students, the
public, businesses, our faculty
and staff.”
With more than 11,100
students as of fall 2002, NDSU
has seen a 14 percent enrollment
growth since 1999. Being
recognized as a vibrant,
innovative campus has allowed
NDSU to recruit from among
the nation’s best and brightest
students.
New academic opportunities
abound. Since January
2000, the university has
initiated 19 doctoral programs,
The The Strength Strength of of the the the Herd Herd is is the the the Bison
doctorates offered to 37.
NDSU has doubled its
research and development
expenditures, rising to 128th
among the nation’s institutions
of higher learning, according to
National Science Foundation
rankings. The university’s
research portfolio has reached
more than $80 million in
expenditures; and the campus
is expected to soon attain a
$100 million annual research
budget, a truly significant
milestone.
The physical appearance
of the campus is rapidly
changing, with no fewer than
six major construction projects
nearing competion. The $3.2
million Minard Hall addition,
which is primarily a classroom
building, and the innovative $8
million Living/Learning Center
residence hall project were
scheduled to be ready for fall
classes. The Residence Dining
Center has undergone a $1.18
million remodeling effort. The
400-stall horse barn for the
NDSU Equine Science Center
was scheduled to be completed
in July.
In addition, construction
on the Center for Nanoscale
Science and Engineering in the
NDSU Research and Technology
Park is scheduled to be
finished in January 2004. The
structure
will contain
cleanrooms
and stateof-the-art
synthesis
and
characterization
equipment,
and provide
space for
more than
125 researchers
and support
staff.
The
NDSU Downtown campus
project also has started, and is
scheduled for occupancy in fall
2004. The former Northern
School Supply building will be
renovated to house facilities
for the visual arts and architecture
and landscape architecture
departments. It will include
studios, classrooms, a wood
shop, computer laboratory,
gallery, an outdoor sculpture
area and offices for the Tri-
College University.
This comes on the heels of
other recent construction
projects such as the Wellness
Center, Ehly Hall and the
Animal Nutrition and Physiology
Center.
And the near future holds
plans for a College of Business
Administration building and
renovation of the Bison Sports
Arena.
More than 110 years of
The state’s first land-grant
university began as North
Dakota Agricultural College on
March 8, 1890. The first class
of 30 students was welcomed
by a five-member faculty as
they took a winter agricultural
course. Old Main, the campus’
landmark building, was
completed in 1892.
Renamed in 1960 as North
Dakota State University of
Agriculture and Applied
Science, the institution
educates students for a
multitude of career opportunities.
The university is comprised
of nine educational
units—the College of Science
and Mathematics; College of
Engineering and Architecture;
College of Agriculture, Food
Systems and Natural Resources;
College of Human
Development and Education;
College of Business Administration;
College of Pharmacy;
College of Arts, Humanities
and Social Sciences; College of
University Studies; and the
Graduate School.
The number of program
offerings continues to grow.
As of June 2003, NDSU offered
97 undergraduate degrees, 52
master’s degrees, 37 doctoral
programs, one specialist degree
and seven certificate programs.
With 593 full-time professors,
assistant professors,
associate professors and
instructors, the student-tofaculty
ratio at North Dakota
State is 18-to-1.

Students work closely
with NDSU’s chemists,
engineers,
architects, musicians,
pharmacists, writers and other
respected faculty who frequently
are on the leading edge
of research in their chosen
areas. About 85 percent of the
full-time faculty have the
highest degrees in their fields.
Noted for its collaborations
with the private sector,
NDSU plays a key role in North
Dakota’s economic climate.
The university is an active
partner, as researchers work
closely with firms to improve
productivity and profitability.
The NDSU Extension
Service is dedicated to
outreach efforts that meet the
needs of state residents. It
conducts a rigorous education
program in agriculture, human
development and nutrition,
youth and community development
through its county, area
and state staff.
The talented Bison athletic
teams also set lofty standards.
Now in the process of moving
to NCAA Division I, the
student-athletes compete in
first-class facilities—the
Fargodome, Newman Outdoor
Field, Ellig Sports Complex and
the Bison Sports Arena.
Fargo: A great place to
live, work and study
The home of NDSU, Fargo
is a bustling metropolitan area
that is often listed as one of the
best places to live in the
country. Named an All-
America City by the National
Civic League in 2000, Fargo-
Moorhead is the largest
community between Minneapolis
and Seattle. More than
170,000 people make their home
in Cass and Clay Counties.
A new report says NDSU students contributed 59,211 hours of COMMUNITY SERVICE and academic service-
learning during the 2001 fall semester. According to the report, nearly 10,000 community service hours were contributed through
residence halls, student clubs and organizations, Greek Life and NDSU Make a Difference Day. In addition, the organizations raised
$20,802 and 200 pounds of canned goods for charity.
Employment Review
magazine included Fargo-
Moorhead in its 2003 list of the
“Top 20 Best Places to Live
and Work in America.” The
May 2003 issue of Forbes
magazine rated the community
as the fifth-best place in the
country for business and
careers.
Business Week
magazine included
Fargo-Moorhead in its
“Dazzling Dozen” of
small cities where the
local economies are
doing well despite a
national slowdown.
The Ladies Home
Journal ranked Fargo
eighth in its “Best Cities for
Women-2000.” In addition,
each year from 1997-2002, the
Morgan Quinto Press ranked
North Dakota as the safest
state in its annual crime survey.
Noted for its shopping
centers and abundance of
restaurants, Fargo-Moorhead
also offers outstanding
concerts, entertainment,
activities and museums.
An energetic student
body
The NDSU student body
is a talented, dedicated and
enthusiastic blend of interna-
tional and ethnic backgrounds.
During fall 2002, undergraduate
and graduate students came
from all 53 North Dakota
counties, 40 other states and 58
foreign countries.
NDSU students find it is
easy to make friends and get
involved with campus life.
They can participate
in more than 200
student organizations
to develop
personal and social
relationships, explore
new ideas, learn
about people from
around the world
and augment their
coursework. The
groups focus on
academics, special interests,
service, performing and visual
arts, religion and recreation.
There also are intercultural
groups, honor societies,
fraternities and sororities.
NDSU by the numbers
In fall 2002, there were
4,414 full-time and part-time
NDSU employees statewide.
The NDSU main campus
includes 92 buildings on nearly
47 square blocks or 258
landscaped acres, 4.62 miles of
streets and more than 15 miles
of sidewalks. In all, NDSU is
located on 22,053 acres of
North Dakota land.
This includes the main
Agricultural Experiment Station
at Fargo and eight research
centers, of which four are joint
research-extension service
centers.
Across the state, there are
266 Agricultural Experiment
Station buildings and storage
facilities, and 18,488 acres
dedicated to agricultural
research.
A campus
committed to the future
NDSU’s faculty, staff and
students have accepted
President Chapman’s
challenge to advance
to the next level in all
areas of campus life.
Advances have
come and are coming
on many fronts, and
the people of NDSU
look optimistically to
the challenges and
opportunities of the
future.
“We daily engage
in the process of
expanding humanity’s body of
knowledge.
And we help individuals
build better lives on a foundation
of truth,” Chapman said in
his 2002 State of the University
Address.
“This is a remarkable point
North Dakota. The state is home to some of
the richest soil in the world.
North Dakota has been labeled “the
top producer, nationwide, of barley, durum
spring wheat, all dry edible beans, oats and
sunflowers.
Lignite coal is used to generate over 90
Germans from Russia, and Native American.
North Dakota’s 15 state parks and recreation areas offer exciting opportunities,
immense glaciers, this region
eventually became America’s bread basket
Less than 10,000 years ago, the area
that is now Fargo-Moorhead was 200 feet
below the surface of Lake Agassiz, a huge
inland sea formed at the edge of the ice
leaving 6 feet of rich, black soil that today
makes the Red River Valley one of the
world's most fertile farmlands, with Fargo
and Moorhead at its center.
The Red River of the North separates
the two cities and serves as the border
between North Dakota and Minnesota.
The city of Fargo was named for one of the
owners of the Wells-Fargo Express
Company, William G. Fargo. The city of
Moorhead was named after William G.
Moorhead, an executive of the Northern
Pacific Railway.
In fact, the Northern Pacific
Railway had a profound impact on
both the economy and population of
the area.
Originally settled by Scandinavian
and European immigrants, Fargo and
Moorhead became boom towns with
the arrival of the NP in 1871.
Under the Homestead Act, settlers
were given 160 acres in exchange for
living on the land and farming part of it
for at least five years. Suddenly,
Fargo-Moorhead became a mecca for
hopeful refugees from the overcrowded
East.
The railroad brought a constant
stream of settlers seeking a new life on
America’s newest frontier.
Fargo-Moorhead is the largest
community between Minneapolis and
Seattle. About 176,000 people make
their home in Cass and Clay Counties.
There seems to be no end in sight to
the persistent prosperity and growth of the
twin cities on the Red.
While agriculture is still prominent in
the local economy, Fargo-Moorhead has
also become an important focal point for
other professions, including government,
education, medicine, retailing and manufacturing.
The sprit of the early pioneers remains
a treasured part of Fargo’s proud heritage.
Building continues on our colorful past
toward a very promising future.
