ARAMARK Hits the Links for Kids 

Golf, fun and giving were the focus at the 7 th Annual ARAMARK/Shoes and Clothes for Kids Golf Classic presented by title 

sponsor Pepsi at Chippewa Golf Club on June 27, 2005. Over 30 teams of golfers participated in 18 holes of golf, with 

lunch on the course and contests and giveaways during the game. As part of the 19 th hole festivities golfers were rewarded 

with a wonderful post-event reception in the clubhouse tent, including expertly prepared steak dinner with all of the 

trimmings and prizes for the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place teams, the longest drive and closest 

to the pin. Generous raffle prizes were also 

awarded, including Continental airlines ticket 

vouchers, a full set of golf clubs, numerous 

golf bags and other sports items. The 

ARAMARK staff and volunteers organized 

a wonderful event once again, raising 

$44,000 for Shoes and Clothes for Kids. 

That brings the seven-year total for the event 

to over $200,000! Thank you to ARAMARK, 

our sponsors, and our volunteers who made 

this event a huge success!

attended the 2005 Shoes and 

Clothes for Kids Heart & Sole 

Luncheon raising over $110,000. The Golden Shoe Sponsor 

this year was Forest City Enterprises. The Golden Shoe Award 

was presented to vic gelb, President and Chairman of Victor 

Gelb, Inc. for his commitment to improving the lives of families 

and children in Greater Cleveland. Allan C. Krulak and James 

L. Mason were the event Honorary Co-Chairs. We are also 

happy to report that even though vic was the honoree this 

year, he returned as the Master Ceremonies. 

The luncheon festivities also included “Words of Caring” from 

Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett, CEO of the Cleveland Municipal 

School District, a check presentation for $50,000 by Jacquelyn 

Nance, President, The Cleveland Browns Foundation, an 

invocation performed by the Reverend Dwayne Simmons of 

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and a benediction presented 

by Father Walter Jenne of St. Basil the Great. Musical 

performances by the Cleveland School of the Arts Student Quartet and the Early College 

Band were impressive. The event was rounded out with a raffle, a sumptuous lunch and a 

short film produced by Adelphia showcasing the work in the community performed by SCK. 

The event would not have been possible without the assistance of volunteers, sponsors, 

members of the board of directors for SCK as well as all of the people who donated products 

and services for the event. See you next year!

Sky Bank Back to School Campaign 

Hosts Chalk Talk by Cavs’ Coach Mike Brown 

The kick-off for the third annual Back to School Campaign was held on September 12 to raise community 

awareness of the need for clothing, shoes and other items for children going back to school. Thanks 

to the new title sponsorship of Sky Bank and several other companies who donated products or services, 

the campaign was a huge success this year. 

The campaign was launched with a press conference at “the Q” arena, with featured speaker Cleveland 

Cavaliers Head Coach, Mike Brown. To kick-off this year’s campaign, Coach Brown shared an inspiring 

message about self-confidence, having dreams and achieving your goals. Providing additional words 

of inspiration were Dick Hollington, Regional President of Sky Bank, Len Komoroski, President, Cavaliers 

Operating Company and our own 

vic gelb and Valerie McCormack. 

Also present was the Cavs mascot, 

Moondog, who entertained the 

children – both big and small. 

As part of the event children from 

the YMCA’s day care program 

received backpacks, school supplies 

and other donated items. These 

items were also distributed to Shoes

Cleveland Browns Foundation Sponsors the Shoe Gift Card Program 

The Cleveland Browns Foundation has become the first ever 

title sponsor of the Shoes and Clothes for Kids Shoe Gift 

Card Program with a $50,000 gift. In 2005, SCK received 

the first installment and in 2006 we will receive the final 

installment. As part of the new collaboration SCK has 

designed and is now using a new sticker on our shoe gift 

cards that shows the Cleveland Browns Foundation logo 

along with ours. This new strategic alliance is important 

for both organizations. As part of our annual luncheon 

President, Jacquelyn Nance of the Cleveland Browns 

Foundation, was on hand for an official check presentation.

hard to believe that we’re in to a new year. 2005 was a particularly good one for us if you 

measure us by the number of shoes and new clothes we were able to provide for the 25,000 

children we supplied through our network of 42 wonderful distribution partners. if you measure 

us by the unmet needs however, we have a long way to go. we have increased our efforts to 

narrow that gap. thanks to a special grant from the cleveland foundation we have added a 

new position. kathy lewis’ mission as the back to school program director is to help us supplement 

our sourcing for new clothes. k.i.d.s. (kids in distressed situations) has been a wonderful 

partner…but the needs are far greater. we’re also pleased to welcome three new community 

leaders to our board; jj digeronimo, jeanine arden ornt and patrick mccarthy. i’d also like to 

acknowledge and thank those who have just retired from the board. they are phyllis alden, joanne clark, evelyn faulkner 

and patty osher. we’re very proud of our board members…as well as those on our associate board who are led by scott 

simon and kelly rudloff. i’m particularly thrilled with the selection and election of rocky richardson as my successor. rocky 

will bring excitement and creativity to the position and will build upon our momentum. allan krulak and i have promised 

her our unqualified support. i turn my gavel over to her this spring. the board has been inspiring and the staff has been 

wonderful. our organization has never been in a better position to serve. our response to the katrina tragedy was a 

perfect example of how we can respond to our community needs. thanks so much for your support.

Shoes During Holidays 

Each year, Hyland 

Software has a tradition of asking everyone to 

bring an item for charity as their “ticket in the 

door” to the Holiday Party. This year, they 

celebrated at the House of Blues in Downtown 

Cleveland. Each guest was asked to bring at 

least one NEW pair of shoes or boots. Hyland 

employees once again showed their generosity, 

many of them bringing bags full of shoes as opposed to their required 

one pair. Hyland managed to collect over 800 pairs of shoes which were 

donated to Shoes and Clothes for Kids!

Honored with the Golden Shoe Award 

This year the Heart & Sole Luncheon Golden Shoe Award recipient was vic gelb, President and CEO 

of Victor Gelb, Inc. and the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Shoes and Clothes for Kids. 

Mr. Gelb is well recognized in Cleveland for his activism and philanthropic work. As a long time 

supporter of Shoes and Clothes for Kids, Mr. Gelb welcomed the opportunity to lead the organization 

during a significant time of growth after completion of a 5 year strategic plan to guide fund 

development, communications and our programs and services. Before his tenure is completed as 

Chairman, Mr. Gelb hopes to double the amount of shoe gift cards distributed by the agency as well 

as to secure a new facility as the future home of Shoes and Clothes for Kids. 

Mr. Gelb is also a member of the board of directors of Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation, Playhouse Square 

Foundation, Vocational Guidance Services, Chautauqua Foundation and the Free Clinic of Cleveland. He 

attended Western Reserve University and resides in Moreland Hills with his wife Joan. He has four children and seven grandchildren

Shoes and Clothes for Kids Launches New Program! 

Shoes and Clothes for Kids has recently learned that we received FULL funding 

for our Back to School Program from The Cleveland Foundation to cover the 

operating costs during the first two years of this new initiative. This program 

will combine the needs of Shoes and Clothes for Kids to diversify clothing 

suppliers and funding as well as increase visibility in the community. 

This two year pilot program will perform several functions on behalf of the 

agency. First a new staff person, the Back to School Director, will be hired to 

oversee the program. The Back to School Director’s duties will include identifying 

manufacturers, negotiating pricing, purchasing clothing directly from the new 

sources, identifying new funding sources to cover the cost of the program and 

the clothing purchased and finally to put into place a comprehensive annual 

fundraising program to increase awareness and funds for the Back to School 

Program. Phew – no small task! 

With the acquisition of new money and new suppliers the program will become 

self supporting in the third year. The Back to School Program will be a supplemental 

addition to the donations of product currently provided by Kids in Distressed 

Situations (K.I.D.S.), not a replacement. Shoes and Clothes for Kids’ relationship 

with K.I.D.S is an important one that will continue to be maintained and 

strengthened. So is our relationship with Payless ShoeSource which means shoe 

Cruisin’ for Shoes with American Cruisers 

The thirteenth annual benefit for SCK was held by The American Cruisers on Sunday, August 28 

at the Ford Motor Plant in Brook Park. There were great giveaways and of course plenty of vintage 

and classic cars that came to park and cruise. This very successful event raised $8,000 to support 

the programs and services of Shoes and Clothes for Kids. To date the American Cruisers have 

raised almost $90,000 to support the mission driven work of Shoes and Clothes for Kids. 

Special thanks to Ford Motor Company for hosting the event, to Bob Hrovat who donated a $1,000 

cash prize and to Jack McManus who donated a power washer. Cadillac Mike did a great job 

spinning tunes, John Jenson (Elvis) put on a wonderful performance at no charge, and the New 

Flames Band were a welcome addition to the event. Finally thanks to Tex from ATV Productions 

for videotaping and donating CD sales money to the charity. 

Parmatown Mall’s Annual Night of Giving Benefits SCK 

Parmatown Mall hosted its second annual Night of Giving on December 6, 2005 and it was a huge 

success! During this special shopping event, the mall was open only to ticket holders. Retailers 

offered special discounts and sales throughout the mall. Shoppers also had the opportunity to taste 

foods from local restaurants, hear the sounds of the season, enjoy strolling entertainers and have 

their caricature drawn. Again this year attendees competed for fabulous prize giveaways. Volunteers 

from the American Cruisers, coordinated by Jim and Linda Ziga, along with SCK staff and volunteers 

sold tickets at the various mall entrances during the event. 

Proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to SCK. All of the 

coins tossed into the mall’s fountains during November and 

December will also be donated to SCK. The 2005 event to date 

has raised $4,700 for the organization. Overall the amount 

Parmatown has raised for SCK is almost $10,000!

place. If we have more product to give out all the

and put our buying power to work. Of course many 

thanks to The Cleveland Foundation for their support 

and stay tuned for news about the program as it 

begins to take shape!

Founder’s Award 

City Year Cleveland became the most 

recent recipient of the Morrie Sayre 

Founder’s Award for Outstanding 

Volunteerism at this year’s Heart & 

Sole Luncheon. Traditionally the 

Morrie Sayre Founder’s Award winner is not announced until the 

day of the event and this year was no exception. Chris Larson, the 

Executive Director of City Year Cleveland was there to accept the 

award on behalf of his organization and the volunteers who have 

given of their time at the SCK warehouse. 

Shoes and Clothes for Kids ongoing need is to package over $1 

million worth of inventory annually to distribute into the Cleveland 

community. City Year participants have volunteered regularly in our 

warehouse for years 

always with great energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes 

the request is made with very little notice depending 

on shipments and immediate needs. City Year 

Cleveland volunteers have been invaluable to SCK 

over the years as we have always been able to count 

on them to be there when we need them the most.

SCK Programs and Services News 

Power of One 

Margaret Bernstein, reporter with The Plain Dealer, included SCK as one of seven 

charities highlighted as providing much needed services to make sure children go 

back to school with what they need. Ms. Bernstein developed The Power of One 

article series as a way for The Plain Dealer to connect people with opportunities for 

giving back and making a difference in the communities where people live. Thanks 

to the article and subsequent follow-up in the paper SCK received over $5,500 in 

donations which was one of the actions readers were directed to take to help the 

children with shoe gift cards for back to school. 

Youth Employment Opportunity Program (YEOP) 

In partnership with the Cleveland Municipal School District 

students from the YEOP program took part in a week long community service 

event held at the SCK warehouse. Students participated in organizing the 

warehouse as well as packing and sorting. The Cleveland Municipal School District 

YEOP Program helps young people attain success in today’s workforce through 

training, academic services, internships, and mentoring. 

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) 

SCK receives ongoing support from the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program 

(RSVP). The volunteers from RSVP provide support with office assignments, and 

help with upcoming distributions. Recently, 12 volunteers contributed their time 

setting up for our Heart & Sole Luncheon. Through RSVP, adults ages 55 and older can reach back to the 

community by volunteering and performing essential services for the community’s nonprofit agencies. 

City Year and SCK prepare for 

Katrina evacuees 

With help from City Year Cleveland in 2005, 

SCK was able to prepare for distributions and 

upcoming events. Volunteers from City Year 

helped with packing, sorting, and organizing 

at the SCK warehouse and at The Cleveland 

Convention Center where SCK provided clothing 

and shoe gift cards for Hurricane Katrina 

evacuees. 

Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU) 

On August 26, 2005 volunteers from BVU participated in a day of community service 

at our warehouse. The day started with a group discussion about our organization and 

then continued with a host of different projects. With more than 30 participants, the 

volunteers were able to completely pack a shipment of items from Sears. 

HELP Foundation 

SCK donated 80 Payless ShoeSource gift cards to the HELP Foundation to benefit children 

in their summer program who needed shoes. The HELP Foundation is a nonprofit 

organization serving the needs of children and adults with mental retardation, development 

disabilities, and physical challenges. The program operates in Cuyahoga, Lake, and 

Summit counties. Services include providing quality care, education, and safe housing for over 450 people. 

United Parcel Service (UPS) 

On June 17, 2005 over 20 employees from UPS joined SCK 

for a day of community service. Volunteers from a variety 

of UPS departments worked together to completely pack 

a shipment of clothing at the warehouse. UPS employees 

participate in our annual golf outing and luncheon. 

Office Depot 

SCK was able to distribute backpacks with school supplies during our Back to School 

distribution thanks to a generous donation from Office Depot. Jeff Lancaster, a member 

of the SCK Communication Committee, also organized fellow Office Depot employees 

to spend an afternoon at our warehouse for a day of community service. 

Thomas Jefferson School 

Students from the Thomas Jefferson 

School participated in a morning of 

community service at our warehouse. 

With great enthusiasm, the 15 

students accompanied by their 

teachers, sorted and packed for 

upcoming distributions. Highlights 

of this packing day were captured 

on video and used as part of the 

SCK luncheon video. 

Giant Eagle’s “Klothes for Kids” 

SCK received a special delivery from Giant Eagle. This supermarket retailer partnered 

with Dress for Success Dry Cleaners, their in-store dry cleaning service, to provide 

13 pallets of clothing collected at their stores located in Cleveland to benefit 

SCK recipients.

New Associate Board Empowers Young Professionals 

If you have any doubts about the future of Cleveland, you won’t 

after reading about the new Associate Board of Shoes and Clothes 

for Kids! The Associate Board is comprised 

of 27 of the brightest, most enthusiastic, 

young volunteers in Cleveland and the work 

they are doing for Shoes and Clothes for 

Kids is invaluable. 

Led by co-chairs, Kelly Rudloff and Scott 

Simon, the Associate Board really hit the 

ground running since their formation in 

May. They are quickly accomplishing their 

mission of involving and empowering their 

young professional peers in strengthening 

their community while supporting the 

mission-driven work of the organization. 

The board has led several successful events 

at The Velvet Dog and Tequila Ranch in July 

and October. Both events involved a raffle 

to raise money for Shoes and Clothes for Kids. The group also 

launched a lecture series called “Walk A Mile in My Shoes” with 

inaugural speaker Jen Toohey, radio host on WQAL Q104. Jen’s 

lecture included talk about how she got into radio and some of her 

experiences on the job interviewing celebrities. Stay tuned for the
