SC4K Celebrates 40 Years
of Providing Shoes and Clothing
to Greater Cleveland’s Children
Since 1969, Shoes and
Clothes for Kids has positively
impacted the lives of area
children by giving them the
pride and confidence that
comes from having brand
new shoes and clothes. Pride
and confidence that are
essential to a child’s success
in school – and in life.
Founded by businessman Morrie Sayre as Shoes for Kids, the organization
initially collected used shoes and distributed them directly to the children
in need. Later, the early founders raised money to purchase new shoes.
The program eventually operated out of the Downtown YMCA and
later from the
Cleveland Municipal
School District’s
Woodland Data
Center warehouse.
Ten years ago, new
clothing items were
added to the
distribution and Shoes
for Kids officially
became Shoes and
Clothes for Kids
(SC4K).
SC4K now procures
a majority of its clothing items through a direct purchasing program
from a network of wholesalers that sell children’s clothing at deep
discounts. SC4K is able to purchase $22.00 worth of brand new
clothing for every $1.00 spent. In addition, SC4K also purchases and
distributes Payless ShoeSource shoe gift cards instead of shoes allowing
families to purchase new shoes or boots of their choice that are stylish
and fit properly at conveniently located Payless locations. These gift
cards also help SC4K carry out its mission with compassion, care
and respect.
SC4K distributes only brand new items, including quality clothing basics
like socks, underwear, t-shirts, pants, and coats. In 2009 alone, SC4K
will distribute new clothing and Payless shoe gift cards with a retail
value of over $1.8 million dollars. Our extensive partner distribution
network consists of 37 social service agencies in the Greater Cleveland
Shoes and Clothes for Kids Newsletter • Spring 2009
area that each operate a distribution five to six times a year. SC4K
charges no fees to its recipients or Distribution Partners and each year
the program must be re-capitalized. SC4K is proud to report that of
every dollar you give, $0.92 cents goes directly to the programs and
services that benefit the children we serve.
The generosity of our volunteers and donors has been the cornerstone
of SC4K over the years, allowing us operate efficiently with a staff of
only three full-time and one part-time employee. More than 900
volunteers provide direct service to the children by packing boxes in
the warehouse, serving on boards, working in the office or supporting
SC4K at community events.

Cleveland community, we
realize that the need is
greater now than it has
ever been. SC4K is
working hard to address
that need while creating
new and innovative ways
to involve and engage our
supporters. The 2009 Heart & Sole Luncheon on October 19 th will
be a special celebration of the organization’s 40 th Anniversary, involving
a display of historical information and a new video highlighting the
organization’s work over the past 40 years. Please show your support
by attending the luncheon, our biggest and most important fundraiser
of the year.

A Message from the Executive Director
SC4K Celebrates 40 th Year
It has truly been my honor to work alongside
retiring SC4K Board Chair, Rocky Richardson.
Over the past three years, Rocky brought
enthusiastic leadership and genuine passion
to her executive role and helped see the
organization though both challenges and
successes. As Rocky moves into her new
role as Life Director for the organization she will remain an important
link. Her predecessor Terry Uhl has already hit the ground running
with fresh enthusiasm and innovative ideas. Terry has been a longtime
member of the Board of Directors and has provided significant
guidance for SC4K’s strategic and public relations planning efforts.
I am confident that Terry and I will work together with the rest of
the Board and staff to continue the ambitious projects started by
Rocky and her predecessors to ensure that Shoes and Clothes for
Kid will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands
of deserving children for years to come.

2009 marks SC4K’s 40 th anniversary and will be an important and
busy year for the organization. Plans for the 2 nd annual Fool’s Frolic
on April 1 st are well underway. This will be a fun-filled, April Foolsthemed
evening of surprises and fabulous fare at Moxie, The
Restaurant. The Associate Board is hard at work preparing for the
4 th annual Luau on the Lake on July 18 th , an entertaining summer
evening fund-raiser on the lake. Finally, stay tuned for opportunities
to get involved with Shoes and Clothes for Kids Day at Progressive
Field on September 9 th as we try to Fill the House for SC4K for the
Indians vs. Texas Rangers day game.
While we are busy with our 40 th Anniversary plans, we are focused
more than ever on our critical mission of serving children in need
with basic clothing items and shoes. We thank you for your

Raises Critical Funds for SC4K
Luncheon presented by Time Warner Cable

SC4K’s annual Heart & Sole Luncheon
fund-raiser was an extraordinary success
and raised net proceeds of over $130,000.
Time Warner Cable returned as the
presenting sponsor again and Golden Shoe
Sponsors were Fifth Third Bank and Forest
City Enterprises.
The Golden Shoe Award was presented
to Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Mike
Brown and his wife Carolyn for their
commitment to improving the quality
of life for children and families in
Greater Cleveland.
Over 600 guests filled the grand ballroom at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Guests were treated to delightful
musical performances by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) All-City Jazz Band and the Cleveland
School of the Arts string quartet. Crowd pleaser and Immediate Past Chair of SC4K, vic gelb, served as the
Master of Ceremonies. Nancy Huber, Allan C. Krulak, Jim Mason and Rocky Richardson served as Honorary
Luncheon Co-Chairs.

involved with SC4K and the positive impact new clothing and shoes can have on a child in need.

Final Message from Outgoing Chair
As my term as Chair of the Board of Directors ends, I wanted to
take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to my fellow
Board members and the staff at Shoes and Clothes for Kids. Your
heartfelt passion, unwavering dedication and depth of commitment
have been a source of inspiration and strength. Thanks especially
to vic gelb, whose gentle voice and quiet courage provided such
a great example of leadership and grace, as well as Allan Krulak,
whose long time commitment to improving the lives of this community’s children inspired
me to think and dream big. A special note of appreciation as well to the Associate Board,
whose innovation, creativity and youthful energy was a continual source of encouragement
and hope about the future of this organization and this community.
Terry Uhl has been elected as my successor - and I offer my full support as he leads the
important work of this organization. Terry’s commitment to Shoes and Clothes for Kids is
extraordinary, having been a hardworking, dedicated board member and volunteer for a
number of years. While the coming year promises unprecedented challenges, the leadership
of the organization rests in steady, capable hands.
To Val, Sharon, Carolyn and LaRay - It’s hard to imagine a harder working, more dedicated
group of professionals. Words cannot sufficiently express my personal appreciation for your
work ethic, “can do” spirit and heartfelt dedication to the mission of this organization.

generously provided funding and volunteers to further the work of this organization during

surprise joint winners of the Morrie Sayre Award for Outstanding
Volunteerism. Both ARAMARK and Kevin Kearny have made
extraordinary donations of time, talent and funds over the past

The program also featured a moving video created pro-bono
by 5Front, Inc. that highlighted the work of SC4K over the past
39 years and ended with the unveiling of the new 40 th Anniversary

DISTRIBUTION NEWS
2009 Distribution Goal Set
In 2009, SC4K will distribute new clothing
and Payless shoe gift cards with a retail
value of $1,800,000.
UPS and Associate Board Team Up
for Annual Care Day
Every other month, SC4K’s partner sites stretch their limited resources
to pick up clothing items and shoe gift cards at the SC4K warehouse
for distribution at their sites. At SC4K’s annual Care Day event,
these items are delivered directly to partners saving the sites valuable
time and resources. This past October, UPS, along with Supply Chain
Solutions and in conjunction with UPS Global Volunteer Month,
stepped up for the second year to provide vehicles, route logistics
and dozens of volunteers to make SC4K’s deliveries to all of the
distribution partner sites. Members of the SC4K Board of Directors
and Associate
Board also
participated
in the deliveries.
One distribution
partner on each
distribution route
led volunteers on
a site tour and shared information about the services they provide.
Channel 3 covered the event on their noon and evening news
broadcasts. With the combined volunteer hours of this and other
events, SC4K received a grant of over $6,000 from the UPS
Foundation. Special thanks to Candice Dempsey, Samantha Stephens
and the rest of the Care Day team for coordinating these fabulous
volunteer efforts.

Four Star Rating
For the third consecutive year, SC4K achieved
the coveted four star ranking from Charity
Navigator, America's premier independent
charity evaluator. Only 11% of the nation's
charities earn this highest rating three years in
a row. To earn this rating, SC4K demonstrated
exceptional financial health, out-performing most of its peers in its
efforts to manage and grow its finances in the most fiscally responsible
way possible.

Meeting Held at
Dominion
In February, over 60 representatives from SC4K’s distribution partner
network came together at Dominion to discuss the current program
and plans for 2009. Staff led an open discussion on topics of
income-eligibility, the increasing need for SC4K’s services and
logistics of the distribution program. Partners are seeing an
increased demand for programs like SC4K
who assist families
with basic needs,
and strategized
ways to handle
increased requests

COMMUNITY DONATIONS
Hyland Software
Employees Donate
1,100 Pairs of New Shoes
Hyland Software employees collected
a record-breaking 1,100 pairs of shoes
for SC4K at their holiday party at the
Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame & Museum
in December. For the third year, Hyland asked its employees to bring
a new pair of children’s shoes to the party as an “entrance fee” to
be donated to local children in need through SC4K. The line to
enter was out the door as employee after employee handed over
not only one, but sometimes two or three pairs of new shoes. The
piles of shoes were bagged
by volunteers from SC4K
who generously donated
their time and services.

Holiday Season Sparks
Clevelanders Generosity
Several area companies hosted drives during the holidays to collect
new items and monetary donations for Shoes and Clothes for Kids.
Employees in one department at the Cleveland Clinic collected
brand new clothing, toys and gift cards. The Plain Dealer once again
placed collection boxes at their headquarters to collect donations
of new clothing, shoes and other items. Several employees were
moved to make to make monetary donations in lieu of purchasing
items. Thanks to all of the donors for making a special effort to
help children in need.
Dominion Sponsors Holiday Tree for SC4K
For the second year, Dominion sponsored a holiday tree
at The Cleveland Play House’s annual Festival of Trees.
The tree was decorated with over 200 children’s winter
accessory items that were donated to SC4K. The festival
featured 50 sponsored and decorated holiday trees
exhibited throughout the lobbies and halls of The
Play House during the holiday season. Special thanks
to SC4K board member Terry Bishop for coordinating
this effort.
New Funding from the McCormick Foundation
SC4K received a generous $20,000 grant from The Cavaliers Youth
Fund, a fund of the McCormick Foundation in January to support
the distribution program this year.
