SC4K Programs and Services News DISTRIBUTION NEWS 2009 Distribution Goal Set In 2009, SC4K will distribute new clothing and Payless shoe gift cards with a retail value of $1,800,000. UPS and Associate Board Team Up for Annual Care Day Every other month, SC4K’s partner sites stretch their limited resources to pick up clothing items and shoe gift cards at the SC4K warehouse for distribution at their sites. At SC4K’s annual Care Day event, these items are delivered directly to partners saving the sites valuable time and resources. This past October, UPS, along with Supply Chain Solutions and in conjunction with UPS Global Volunteer Month, stepped up for the second year to provide vehicles, route logistics and dozens of volunteers to make SC4K’s deliveries to all of the distribution partner sites. Members of the SC4K Board of Directors and Associate Board also participated in the deliveries. One distribution partner on each distribution route led volunteers on a site tour and shared information about the services they provide. Channel 3 covered the event on their noon and evening news broadcasts. With the combined volunteer hours of this and other events, SC4K received a grant of over $6,000 from the UPS Foundation. Special thanks to Candice Dempsey, Samantha Stephens and the rest of the Care Day team for coordinating these fabulous volunteer efforts. Charity Navigator Four Star Rating For the third consecutive year, SC4K achieved the coveted four star ranking from Charity Navigator, America's premier independent charity evaluator. Only 11% of the nation's charities earn this highest rating three years in a row. To earn this rating, SC4K demonstrated exceptional financial health, out-performing most of its peers in its efforts to manage and grow its finances in the most fiscally responsible way possible. Distribution Partner Meeting Held at Dominion In February, over 60 representatives from SC4K’s distribution partner network came together at Dominion to discuss the current program and plans for 2009. Staff led an open discussion on topics of income-eligibility, the increasing need for SC4K’s services and logistics of the distribution program. Partners are seeing an increased demand for programs like SC4K who assist families with basic needs, and strategized ways to handle increased requests for help. Special thanks to for donating meeting space. COMMUNITY DONATIONS Hyland Software Employees Donate 1,100 Pairs of New Shoes Hyland Software employees collected a record-breaking 1,100 pairs of shoes for SC4K at their holiday party at the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in December. For the third year, Hyland asked its employees to bring a new pair of children’s shoes to the party as an “entrance fee” to be donated to local children in need through SC4K. The line to enter was out the door as employee after employee handed over not only one, but sometimes two or three pairs of new shoes. The piles of shoes were bagged by volunteers from SC4K who generously donated their time and services. Thank you Hyland employees for this extraordinary donation. Holiday Season Sparks Clevelanders Generosity Several area companies hosted drives during the holidays to collect new items and monetary donations for Shoes and Clothes for Kids. Employees in one department at the Cleveland Clinic collected brand new clothing, toys and gift cards. The Plain Dealer once again placed collection boxes at their headquarters to collect donations of new clothing, shoes and other items. Several employees were moved to make to make monetary donations in lieu of purchasing items. Thanks to all of the donors for making a special effort to help children in need. Dominion Sponsors Holiday Tree for SC4K For the second year, Dominion sponsored a holiday tree at The Cleveland Play House’s annual Festival of Trees. The tree was decorated with over 200 children’s winter accessory items that were donated to SC4K. The festival featured 50 sponsored and decorated holiday trees exhibited throughout the lobbies and halls of The Play House during the holiday season. Special thanks to SC4K board member Terry Bishop for coordinating this effort. New Funding from the McCormick Foundation SC4K received a generous $20,000 grant from The Cavaliers Youth Fund, a fund of the McCormick Foundation in January to support the distribution program this year.
