IMAGINE
… An industry that embraces a global and enterprise
view of information.
…An industry where all trading partners can easily
exchange information as required.
… An industry where business solutions include
ACORD standards.
For more than 40 years, ACord has been responding
to the needs of our members and partners, working
hand-in-hand to develop the best and most efficient
products and services for ease of doing business.
we’ve kept pace with the changes, in business and in society. From paper forms, to
electronic data Interchange, to XML, to the enterprise architecture of the Framework,
ACord has consistently positioned itself at the leading edge of technology, to anticipate
and respond to the needs of an evolving industry.
As we head into 2012, everything ACord has done up to this point has laid the
groundwork for the next phase of our evolution.
Today’s ACord is shaped by where we’ve been, but it’s defined by where we’re heading.
Today’s ACord is about possibilities, about solutions, and about connecting the dots for
the future of our industry. New initiatives…new growth…new and better ways to serve our
members.
The ACord story today has two important aspects. The first is, of course, our Standards
themselves. The second is the people behind those Standards: the members from all
corners of the industry who develop them, the diverse communities that embrace them,
and the staff that helps to maintain and implement them. As an ACord member, that
story is being written by your hand as much as by ours.
This membership report will tell you the story of what we’re doing, how we’re doing
it, and who’s doing it, on behalf of, and in partnership with, our members. Most
important, it will tell you why our work benefits you, and why we believe that
Standards matter.
At ACord, we see an entire industry capable of transacting business using ACord Standards.
This vision includes systems composed of interchangeable components based on ACord
Standards that span the enterprise and provide a 360-degree view of people, organizations
and risks.
It includes the solution providers who build those systems, and it includes all of you who
embrace Standards in your business practices and IT processes. when you implement
any aspect of ACord Standards even in small and incremental ways, you’re showing your
support for an industry based on collaboration, efficiency and sky’s-the-limit potential.
Your Standards implementation is a strong step into the future of our industry. At ACord,
we work to give you all the tools and information you need to help your organization and
your partners take that step together.
To our MeMBerS.
For years, leading organizations in many
industries have established internal
groups to evaluate how their business
units and best practices interface
with the evolving global marketplace.
Today, this kind of broad perspective is
especially important to the insurance
industry. The ACord Common Services
Program mirrors this mission-critical
approach as we aim to minimize
complexity and simplify integration for
ACord’s membership worldwide.
designing ACord’s Common Services
shared Standards to be reusable across
programs and geographies reduces
duplication of effort and use of “one-off”
solutions. This forward-thinking strategy
saves time, money and resources, and
paves the way for solutions to emerging
challenges that face tomorrow’s
insurance industry.
Common Services encompass
Standards-based solutions such as the
acord web Services profile, which
bridges the gap between ACord and
horizontal technical Standards, and
business-oriented content such as the
acord messaging library,
a common set of business
messaging components that
spans multiple domains and can
be used globally.
ACord Common Services also
embrace industry best practices,
including architecture and naming
& design principles aligned with
cross-industry Standards bodies
such as w3C, oASIS, and uN/
CeFACT. This approach allows
ACord members to shorten
implementation timeframes
by leveraging universally
established tools.
Common Services is now focused
on expanding utilization by
the u.S. National Insurance
Producer registry (NIPr),
and in the growing Southern
African market. when new
products are developed and
new markets opened, ACord’s
Common Services provide
the foundation to take our
Standards there.
2011 was a year of new initiatives and upgrades within the
L&A Program, driven by evolving industry demands for ways
to increase revenue while reducing costs. ACord made
significant progress in several areas including:
Plug & Play
ACORD’s Plug & Play consortium works
to ensure that diverse systems easily
connect with each other (“plug and play”)
through consistent interpretation and
implementation of ACORD Standards. The
current focus is ACORD’s Life & Annuity
Standard and the common ACORD Web
Services Profile. While this initiative
is technical in nature, it is driven by
important business considerations:
• Decrease implementation time
• Reduce associated development
costs by making it easy to reuse
components.
The concept was proven in May 2011 at the
first Plug & Play Jamboree, where companies
with no prior interactions tested their
implementations of ACORD Life, Annuity,
and Health services in a live and unfiltered
environment. The result was a demonstration
of successful service calls achieved by
following the Plug & Play specifications.
Employee Benefits
In the Employee Benefits segment of the
industry, brokers and underwriters often have
to communicate repeatedly to get a complete
data set to create a proposal. ACORD’s XML
Message for Census will enable insurance
carriers to receive the census data for RFI/
RFP, enrollment and maintenance in the same
standard electronic format from every agent/
broker, and help reduce the back-and-forth to a
single exchange of data.
@ACORD_LA acord.org/la @ACORD_PC acord.org/pc
DTCC Messages
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation’s record
layouts of the fixed file formats used by their Insurance &
Retirement Services business have been incorporated into
ACORD’s Standard.
The inclusion of the DTCC messages in the Standard is
significant because the industry now views these messages
as a Standard and not as a proprietary entity. This will raise
awareness of the importance of Standards for data exchange
between insurance carriers and distributors and help drive
further adoption.
Insured Retirement Institute
The Insured Retirement Institute brings together the
interests of the industry, financial advisors and consumers
under one umbrella. As part of its straight-through
processing initiative to create a paper-free process, gain
regulatory acceptance and benefit consumers, the IRI
continues to define detailed ACORD L&A and DTCC
Standards-based data messaging.
Life Brokerage Technology Committee
Participation
ACORD and the National Association of Independent Life
Brokerage Agencies (NAILBA) are active participants in
the Life Brokerage Technology Committee, an independent
group that brings together carriers, brokers/agents and
solution providers to address technology needs in the life
industry. The Committee provides a forum for the broker
community to share its collective challenges and increase
its input into helping shape the Standards.
Long Term Care
ACORD is working with members to help the Long Term
Care community start implementing ACORD Standards.
The initial goal is to create standardized messages that
help insurers achieve consistent implementation of
electronic new business applications.
Property & Casualty
The Property & Casualty Standards encompass personal and commercial lines,
surety and workers’ compensation reporting in multiple formats. The P&C
Standards are also used to service data for the global reinsurance market. In
2011, members approved 43 Maintenance requests that improved aspects of
the P&C Standards including XML, AL3, and ACord Forms.
Interoperability
Reinsurance transactions often
require complex global exchanges of
information. ACORD is developing
interoperability between ACORD’s
P&C and Reinsurance Standards
to smooth the flow of reinsurance
data. In addition to the benefits to all
parties along the distribution chain,
this initiative will support ACORD’s
larger interoperability goals by
demonstrating how ACORD
Standards work together to improve
efficiency across lines of business.
Telematics
Telematics is the combination of
telecommunications and informatics
used to gather and transmit data
remotely from motor vehicles. This
data includes driving activity,
accident reporting, GPS usage, and
other functions.
Acting on a member’s suggestion,
ACORD is bringing together a
community of insurers to create
a Standard for telematics data
and reporting. This Standard will
improve the quality and availability
of vehicle data that can be used
for reporting and analytics. A
telematics Standard will enable the
transmission of consistent data that
allows insurers to make business
decisions within their underwriting,
sales, marketing and product
management areas.
Telematics represents an important
opportunity for ACORD to enter an
emerging area that will only grow in
importance to our industry.
Excess & Surplus Lines
ACORD continues to work with
industry organizations such as the
Agents Council for Technology
(ACT), American Association
of Managing General Agents
(AAMGA), and National Association
of Professional Surplus Lines
Offices (NAPSLO) to drive the
Excess and Surplus Lines market
to adopt Standards and to facilitate
automated movement of data
between independent agents,
MGAs, and carriers.
CoMMerCIAL LINeS dowNLoAd
The Commercial Lines download initiative
continues to gain momentum among
insurers and agencies. ACord is currently
assessing the scope of documentation to be
produced and the criteria for defining the minimum
data sets for each message.
peggy Scott
agents can come together
to find single solutions to
technology problems or
business requirements. The
industry today would not be
as far along as it is in terms
of cost effective technology
implementation with industry
standards and improving
operational efficiencies were it
not for ACORD’s stewardship.”
ACord Standards play a key role in driving major initiatives in the global reinsurance community for both “front
office” placing activity and “back office” premiums and claims processing and settlement.
Placing
There are various initiatives underway:
• The London insurance market is using ACORD messages to administer contract changes and
endorsements. During 2011, 28 broking firms processed more than 30,000 endorsements with 52
Lloyd’s Managing Agents and 21 insurance companies.
• The Exposure Reporting standard has been developed for the collection and reporting of exposure
information which can be used throughout the insurance value chain. The standard was developed
with the assistance of many of the catastrophe modeling software vendors. This group includes
representatives from reinsurance firms from the US and Europe.
Premiums and claims
The reinsurance standards for premiums and claims processing, the electronic Back
office Transaction Standard (eBoT) and electronic Claims office Transaction Standard
(eCoT), are now a global success. Brokers and insurers have implemented them in
more than 30 countries spread across six continents. details include:
• The US Reinsurance Committee is overseeing and promoting implementation
of the standards in the US. Various marketing activities during 2011 have
raised the profile of this work and this will continue in 2012 with specific
activities aimed at cedents.
• The Ruschlikon Initiative is focusing on the implementation activities of some
of the largest firms in the industry who are coordinating their activities globally.
Aon, Willis, Guy Carpenter, Swiss Re, SCOR and Munich Re processed more
than 200,000 messages in 2011 and are set to double that in 2012.
• There are also groups focusing on implementation within other areas such
as Bermuda and London market. Both of these markets already have some
implementations and this is set to increase in 2012.
• Low cost options are in development, including Cedent Bordereau in the US
and Ruschlikon Lite, that allow smaller firms or cedents to participate without
full standards implementation.
• Many insurers in the London market share a common back office and a
version of the standards called E-Accounts has been developed to support this.
8 London brokers are now processing transactions with all Lloyds syndicates
and more than 80 insurance companies.
ACord’s reinsurance standards benefit each member of the value chain. The ceding
company sees reduction in cycle time and paperwork and improvements in data
consistency. For the broker, standards make it easier to analyze data and respond to
queries. For the reinsurer, standards mean faster payment turnaround to the cedent,
and better data, which results in better pricing.
As the reinsurance industry’s understanding deepens about what it gains from
standards implementation, more organizations are taking the important step
toward ACord.
In 2011 ACord established the Australian General Insurance Program to provide insurance
process, messaging and data Standards for the General Insurance (Property & Casualty)
marketplace in Australia. The scope of the Standards includes all general insurance products and
focuses on the entire insurance business process. It involves all constituencies in the community
including agents & brokers, distributors, insurers, solution providers and regulators.
The Australian insurance industry has seen continuous growth in premiums year over year
because of product innovations which include bundling of policies, improved distribution and
servicing strategies. Market size and growth are the driving forces behind improving how data
flows through the Australian market and connects with the rest of the world.
ACord members in Australia officially adopted the ACord Messaging Library as the data
Standard for use within the Australian general insurance market. Two segments of ACord XML,
Professional Indemnity and Commercial Motor, are available for testing and implementation
within the Australian market, and others are in development.
Australian Life Standards
In addition to General Insurance,
ACORD has expanded its presence
into the Australian life insurance
market. The 2011 ACORD Life
Insurance Standards seminar in
Sydney brought together insurers,
funds, administrators and solution
providers to discuss the business
value of implementing ACORD
Standards. The result: development
of the new Australian Life Insurance
Standards Program.
Australian ACORD Forms
acord.org/au
In late 2011, the first group of thirteen
Australia-specific ACORD forms were
approved by member vote. Although the use
of forms in Australia is still in its infancy, the
market shows great interest in eForms.
All of ACORD’s Australian initiatives have
helped to build a thriving community with
local governance, development, deployment
and implementation support for the Standards.
ACord established the South Africa Standards Program to provide insurance process,
messaging and data standards for Short Term (Property & Casualty) insurance. The
scope of the Standards includes all short term insurance products including personal
lines and commercial lines.
Though the program began in South Africa alone, ACord’s facilitation of several faceto-face
meetings and conferences led to major advances in Standards awareness and
development in the region. Almost immediately, organizations in Botswana, Zimbabwe,
and Namibia saw the value of ACord implementation and decided they also wanted
to standardize. By year’s end the ACord Standards Committee had voted to bring the
ACord Standard to these countries and to rename the program “Southern Africa” to
allow ACord’s work to be leveraged by an even wider audience.
The newly renamed program focuses on the entire insurance value chain and involves
all constituencies in the insurance community. Like the Australian program, ACord’s
Southern African initiative is structured for local governance, development and
implementation support for the Standards.
acord.org/wc
Workers’ Compensation Reporting
This year ACord was engaged by
the workers’ Compensation Insurance
organizations (wCIo) and International
Association of Industrial Accident Boards
and Commissions (IAIABC) to help their
community expand upon and modernize
its current fixed length, flat file format data
Standards. ACord’s XML Standard is being
designed to synchronize with the widely
implemented edI standards now in use.
As these organizations increase electronic
transactions and are embracing newer
technology, they have found great value in
the robustly defined and architected XML
business messages found in the ACord
Standards. The workers’ Compensation
community sees ACord XML as a
means to achieve business goals and
realize significant benefits including
cost savings, ease of doing business,
and greater flexibility in its interactions
with the industry.
The initial focus is to provide a
single XML Standard for workers’
Compensation reporting
requirements as an alternative
to the multiple edI Standards.
Currently North Carolina is in
production and Massachusetts is
piloting the Notice of Assignment
XML message.
It has been a year of great activity and
progress for the ACORD Framework.
The recently released Information Model
version 2.0 marked the beginning of a new
phase in the development of the model.
The Information Model represents
the concepts and relationships of the
insurance industry across all programs,
and will continue to be at the core of all
ACORD Standards development. ACORD
members can use the model as the basis
of application development, for validation
of existing models, or as a source of
information exchange between the
business and IT areas. Broad availability
of the enterprise-class model allows
carriers, software vendors, and service
providers to align strategies and move
forward.
Mapping the content of the various
ACORD Standards to the Information
Model is already underway,
focused on common subject
areas used across all programs.
The Framework team has taken
great care to align existing
ACORD Standards, including the
ACORD Forms Library as well as
the XML and EDI data formats, to
the Model.
The Data Model is progressing,
with a member-driven working
group validating the structure and
design before conducting a general
review of the entire model. We expect
many positive enhancements to the
model as a result of membership
participation.
ACORD’s team has also laid out the
foundational pieces of the final piece
of the Framework, the Component
Model.
Forms & eForms
Newer, faster, easier…and
helping you stay compliant.
ACORD’s Forms department spent 2011
streamlining its internal processes to
provide faster and more efficient response
to the users of our more than 800 forms.
Whether we’re developing new forms for
Australia or updating existing forms to
comply with new government regulations,
we work to make sure that you can always
access the most current forms when you
need them.
eForms and eLabels
An eForm is an electronic version of an
ACORD form. An eLabel is a unique
data label, consistent across all ACORD
eForms, that provides a common reference
point between a specific field on the eForm
and the corresponding field in a database.
Systems that incorporate eLabels make it
easier for insurers and solution providers
to make required updates to our eForms
more efficiently. This means users can
access the latest versions of ACORD eForms
more quickly. eLabels and eForms help
keep users current and compliant, and also
make it possible for solution providers to
expand their systems’ capabilities.
ACORD Forms are always evolving
in response to regulatory and user
requirements. As we release new forms, we’ll
also develop matching eLabels as needed.
Compliance
In response to our forms users’ needs, a new
Forms FAQ now resides on the ACORD website,
fed by a knowledge base that addresses their
questions in a clear and consistent manner.
One common question: How do I know if the
ACORD Forms I’m using are compliant with the
latest regulations in my area? We can’t predict
when lawmakers will decide to change regulations
that affect our forms, but we can make sure that we
respond quickly to regulatory changes.
For example, in 2011 we learned that New York State
was instituting new requirements for producers, and
we immediately began work with the state’s Insurance
Department, the Association of Professional Insurance
acord.org/Standards/forms
Agents (PIA) and the Independent Insurance Agents and
Brokers of New York (IIABNY). The resulting new form,
ACORD 39, was released in advance of the regulatory
deadline, and will make it easier for producers to comply
with the new disclosure requirements.
ACORD is prepared to support any other jurisdictions
with a similar regulatory requirement. We’re helping you
stay current and compliant, year after year.
Dynamic Forms
Many ACORD Forms users have asked about the
possibility of creating dynamic ACORD forms. A
dynamic form changes according to the user’s needs.
For example, specific form fields might disappear if
they’re not being used, or could expand to accommodate
additional required information. In 2011 ACORD
brought together agents, carriers, and solution providers
to discuss the concept and completed a white paper that
documents the business case and user issues in detail. In
2012 we will continue to explore the possibilities.
Last year ACORD changed the
cancellation wording on its certificates
in response to state regulatory
requirements. This change required
insurance producers, carriers, and
regulators - as well as those outside the
industry who receive certificates, such
as general contractors, mortgage lenders,
and governmental agencies - to adapt
to the new language. ACORD took
immediate action to help increase
Forms Highlights
understanding of the issue,
including hosting a meeting
with industry leaders to raise
awareness, participating in
webinars, seeking out speaking
opportunities, and responding
to inquiries from agencies,
carriers and other organizations to
educate them about the insurance
regulatory realities that made the
language changes necessary.
• New and enhanced ACORD Forms were approved and released in 2011. These
included Cyber Liability, Specialty Lines, Flood, Disclosure and Garage.
• Several sectional-style personal lines forms were redesigned to be republished
as “stand-alone” applications, including:
• Personal Umbrella Application
• Dwelling Fire Application
• Personal Inland Marine Application
• Mobile Home Application
• Watercraft Application
The corresponding forms were similarly upgraded to incorporate any relevant
information added to the redesigned applications.
• ACORD convened a new Life & Annuity Forms focus group to take a fresh look
at the current ACORD Life & Annuity forms, and help prioritize actions based
on industry needs.
An important aspect of ACord’s current re-organization is the expansion of services that help our members in all
programs with Standards implementations. In 2011, ACord began to offer Advisory Services, including Standards
and Framework training to individual companies, implementation communities, and other groups. ACord
Advisory Services staff can:
• Present an overview of why and how standards should be used
• Recommend tools and resources to maximize your investment in
ACORD standards
• Improve your standards knowledge before starting a new implementation
• Explain how to understand and implement the ACORD Framework
• Help prepare your implementations for ACORD certification
• Prepare you for ACORD Certified Expert tests
• Offer best practices for managing and facilitating an ACORD
implementation project
• Help you address internal barriers to standards implementation
• Educate new and emerging markets on the value of using ACORD standards
• Guide implementation communities looking to address common challenges
by sharing consistent messages and workflows
• Conduct surveys, benchmarking and market analyses
• Perform company health checks to determine readiness for
ACORD implementation
Tools
A key long term goal for ACORD is to further the implementation of
Standards via distribution of tools and utilities that developers can use to
build industry Standards into their software products.
ACORD will make more tools available as we continue the migration to modelbased
Standards and components. A good example of why ACORD’s tooling
initiative will benefit members: Message Forge.
Message Forge
In 2011, the addition of Standards
programs for Australia, Southern Africa
and Workers’ Compensation Reporting
brought ACORD to a grand total of eight
Standards programs, and made ACORD
more representative than ever of the
global insurance community.
But with that rapid growth came a
challenge: How to quickly provide new
communities with an efficient method for
Standards development that could remain
consistent across geographies and lines of
business?
Our members wanted robust and precise
messages, tailored for different audiences
such as business analysts or developers.
So we studied the existing message
documentation from all of our programs
and took the best aspects of each. When
we put it together with our members’
feedback – breakthrough! We’d created
a meta-model for message development:
Message Forge.
Message Forge at its core is a template for
uniform message creation. The template
Testing and Certification Facility
approach means all specifications
look and act the same way, and enable
members to develop deliverables that
contain the same level of consistency
and detail across the board. Another
benefit is the ability to add data
directly as a Maintenance Request
that can be voted on and added to the
specification right away
We piloted Message Forge using the
Employee Benefit Census and LIMRA
messages. The results were satisfying,
says ACORD’s Karen Mottley, who
worked on the project.
“When we did a demo of the Message
Forge pilot at AIF, people from
several different working groups
immediately said, ‘I want that too.’ It
tells me we’re on the right track, and
it feels good to help make it happen.”
We listened, we took action, we
built Message Forge. It’s how we’re
working and where we’re going.
ACORD Testing and Certification Facility acts as a virtual business partner
to validate that an organization’s messages are sent and received in ACORDcompliant
workflow. Certification by the Facility is a prerequisite for
participation in many implementation initiatives
In 2012, we plan to release an ACORD Standards Translator utility for the
specific purpose of translating any version of any one ACORD Standard to
any other in the library.
Communications
with the launch of important new initiatives like ACord 2020 and the reorganization of the
Standards development process, the communications group took on an even more crucial role
in promoting ACord’s activities to the industry. In 2012, ACord‟s communications tools will be
focused on promoting a strong sense of community among ACord members and engaging them
as active participants using our website and other social media tools.
The ACord newsletter entered its second year as a weekly publication, with a strong subscriber
base. Fresh content and unique perspectives provided by professional industry writers and
bloggers, alongside the ongoing contributions from leading publications are making the
newsletter a valuable one-stop hub of industry information, aggregating content of interest
to all our member communities.
ACord video’s new bi-weekly “ACord in the News”, spotlights our accomplishments and
milestones worldwide. It can be viewed on the acord.org homepage. ACord’s social media
presence continues to grow on Twitter and Facebook. Staff post regular updates and we are
adding new fans each week. A LinkedIn group launched this year to promote the ACord
Implementation Forum Group grew to 600 members. An ACord LoMA Forum group has been
launched for the 2012 event.
ACord communications aim to raise awareness of the ACord mission with focused and targeted
messages that drive home the value of implementation to each industry community.
ACORD’s members hail from many lines of business and countries, each with
differing needs, interests and opinions. To make sure our goals for the future align
with our members’ and the industry’s many priorities, ACORD works actively with
industry and government associations to stay well informed and to educate the
industry about our initiatives.
Many ACORD members come from the Information Technology sector, and since
IT infrastructure investments receive increased scrutiny in the current financial
climate, ACORD works to help their insurance business counterparts understand
why ACORD Standards are an especially important and valuable tool that should
be implemented. At the same time, we work with IT departments to increase their
understanding of the business sector, so they can anticipate business strategies and
develop tools that will help achieve their organization’s goals.
ACORD participates in a broad range of trade association meetings, conferences
and collaborative projects covering the range of insurance industry lines of business
and geographies represented within our membership. We had strong presence as
invited speakers, event sponsors and exhibitors at major conferences including RIMS,
NAILBA, CIAB, the Big I and more. We bring a focus on specific near-term projects
with implementation and advocacy opportunities.
We actively track regulations that impact our Standards and Forms, and also larger
international developments like Solvency II and other modernization efforts such as
emerging marketplace conduct.
ACORD’s partnership with the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) is a
great example of what happens when insurance-related data is shared between
the industry and the state regulatory bodies. The ACORD/NIPR relationship
has yielded significant advances in creating appropriate standard messages to
transmit that data.
In 2011, after a decade of unprecedented growth in participation and expansion
of scope we began the first phase of a reorganization designed to better serve our
members and provide greater benefit to the industry at large.
We began by separating the standards development process from the standards
implementation process, and set up a structure that allows us to focus the
appropriate resources in each area.
We’re examining the day-to-day details of how we develop ACORD Standards,
taking a fresh look at who we are, and who we can be. We seek to constantly validate
that are we meeting the needs of the industry with well-focused Standards that are
developed with openness and broad participation.
The ACORD Standards Committee will direct the development initiatives, working
towards our longer term goal to build a model-based standards development
platform that more precisely targets our communities and serves their specific needs.
This platform is an important first step towards creating a new perception of
standards as products developed by experts based on industry requirements.
This effort has been extremely successful in all aspects so far. It has engaged
members in thoughtful dialogue, brainstorming and visioning. It has identified
opportunities across a broad spectrum. And most importantly it has resulted in a
robust, specific plan of action.
Creating better Standards. That’s what ACORD is all about.
As part of ACORD’s reorganization, we have created a companion committee to the ACORD
Standards Committee. While the ASC focuses on development, the new ACORD 2020 Advisory
Committee focuses on driving Standards implementation. The 2020 Committee is the central
forum for ACORD’s implementation activities including:
• Identifying implementation opportunities across the industry
• Forming strategies to turn those opportunities into successful implementations
• Defining metrics to measure the success of implementation initiatives
• Inspiring industry understanding of the vision and value of implementation
The 2020 Committee’s initial activities involved organizing roundtable discussions with a broad
cross-section of industry communities on a variety of topics. A 2020 presentation took center stage
at the ACORD Implementation Forum, and expanded media presence and advocacy is planned for
2012, including a series of videos featuring ACORD members showcasing their successful ACORD
Standards implementations.
The ACORD 2020 Advisory Committee will create an environment that helps facilitate the work of
the various communities within the industry that implement ACORD Standards. A community may
be small and united around a single purpose, or it may cross geographic borders and lines of business
in pursuit of a broad set of business objectives.
Since each community has a different personality and objective, the 2020 Committee will explore ways
in which ACORD can leverage the activities of one community to help another, as well as identifying
shared needs, such as advocacy, exchange development, or tooling.
ACORD Certified Expert
acord.org/ace
The ACord Certified expert (ACe) program is a cornerstone of ACord’s educational
initiatives. To achieve the ACe designation, a candidate must complete three rigorous
exams that include not only detailed and specific ACord knowledge but also general
knowledge of the insurance industry.
This certification provides ACes and their employers with a badge of honor in our industry
that stands for quality, ACord expertise and skill. It also provides industry consumers
with security. An organization that works with a vendor or consultant who employs
ACord Certified experts can be sure that their standards implementation will be
executed properly and efficiently.
The ACe program has graduated more than 70 ACes representing the Life, P&C and
reinsurance lines of business, and nearly 300 candidates are currently enrolled.
In 2011, an exclusive ACe Community website launched that features ACe educational
materials, a discussion forum, and a listing of all current ACe graduates. This site is being
developed into a hub of ACe activity where ACes, ACe candidates, potential employers
and other interested parties can learn about the program, share information and learn
from each other.
In November, new ACes and previous graduates attended the 2011 ACord
Implementation Forum to participate in the ACe conferment ceremony at the ACord
Awards dinner. The Implementation Forum offers ACe training and testing as part of
the program, and has become a valuable event for ACe networking and mentoring
opportunities.
work is underway to streamline the ACe testing process, increase the number of
proctors, and enhance the training materials. As the program expands and the
number of designees and candidates grows, ACord Certified experts will play an
even more vital role in improving the quality of ACord implementations across
the industry.
Canada
The Centre for Studies in Insurance Operations (CSIO)
has been a partner with ACORD for many years in the
development of Property & Casualty Standards in Canada.
In recent months many of our P&C agency management
vendors have been expanding their presence in Canada and
have expressed a desire to use ACORD eForms technology
with CSIO forms.
ACORD has also had a long relationship with the Canadian
Life Insurance EDI Standards (CLIEDIS). Similar to the P&C
activities, ACORD delivers the XML Standards for CLIEDIS.
India
In 2011 ACORD began discussions with the
Indian insurance community about the use of
ACORD Standards, resulting in a document
from the Insurance Regulatory and Development
Authority (IRDA) that ordered the creation of
a Steering Committee to create India-specific
ACORD Standards for the market.
India is a very diverse insurance market and
ACORD is being discussed on multiple levels for
many different lines of business: Reinsurance
Global Placement, Commercial Property &
Casualty, Personal Lines Property & Casualty,
Life Insurance and Micro-Insurance. Each of
these poses a unique challenge.
ACORD is approaching India as it did Australia
and South Africa -- by working with the
community to define the desired outcome and
the technologies to be used. The Indian market is
very specific about accommodating local needs
and enhancing e-trading capabilities inside the
country. This provides a unique opportunity for
expansion of the ACORD Standards.
China
ACORD’s relationships in China primarily center
on the China Insurance Regulatory Commission
(CIRC) and the China Insurance Industry
Technology Committee (CIISTC). In 2011 ACORD
had its first year of official cooperation in the 8th
Insurance Information Technology Summit and
this will move forward with a wider footprint in
2012.
China Life Ltd. in Beijing continues to expand
the footprint of ACORD Standards inside the
organization, employing various components of
current Framework models. China Life is also
pioneering proof-of-concept for future assets
including the Component Model. This activity has
led to deeper discussions with the parent company,
China Life Group, and the possibility of adoption
of ACORD Standards across the enterprise.
Volunteer@ACORD
acord.org/volunteer
volunteers have been the driving force behind ACord since its beginnings in 1970,
and continue to support and inspire the organization today. ACord volunteers
help create solutions in all areas of Standards development and implementation.
working with ACord helps to improve our entire industry and also brings
professional benefit to the volunteers and their organizations.
ACord’s newly published volunteer Handbook explains the various benefits, which
include opportunities for volunteers to:
• Contribute to the development and enhancement of Standards in line with
their company’s business needs.
• Network with peers and experts who share common professional interests.
• Identify opportunities for Standards implementation that might not have been
otherwise known to their company
• Gain early insight into the future direction of the industry, and help to shape it
ACORD Forms have been an industry staple for more than 40 years, used daily by
hundreds of insurance companies and thousands of agencies. ACORD makes forms
available to the industry through a variety of programs that include access to the latest
forms in both electronic and printed formats, and we also license our forms to hundreds
of solution providers who incorporate them into their software products.
The ACORD User Group Information Exchange (AUGIE) facilitates open
communication among industry communities who seek improved workflow
and increased productivity, including agents, brokers, insurers, associations, and
solution providers. AUGIE unites these diverse groups and brings their voices
into the Standards process through meetings, free resources, and online tools.
In February 2011, AUGIE joined forces with ACT and the AIMS Society for a
three-day event in Tampa focused on helping agencies improve business by using
technology, mining existing data, and reducing manual data . Key areas of focus
are increasing implementations in commercial lines, increased use of ACORD
eForms, and the Power of Change educational curriculum that helps agencies
manage change and workflow transitions effectively. AUGIE members also actively
explored the emerging eSignatures area, which will continue to remain
a hot topic in the year to come.
