General Manager's Message
Boyd Holk, CCM, CCE, General Manager
Dear Valued Member,
Summer in the city! What a great time to be in Boston
and at the University Club. During the summer months,
many of our valued staff take some much needed time
off, we make some much needed repairs, and we create
action plans for the upcoming fall and winter busy peri-
ods. During the summer, we also take the time to change
gears.
Recently we made the decision to change gears in our
July/August 2011
kitchen. While we are honored to have a great, seasoned culinary team, we decided to look
for a new chef to take us on a different trajectory going forward. Never an easy decision,
but one that we felt was in the long-term best interest of the Club. In the interim, Jason Dic-
esare, our very capable Sous Chef, will be our interim Executive Chef, and will ensure that
your summer dining experiences stay the same wonderful ones you’re accustomed too.
This August, we will also say goodbye to our F&B Manager, Tom O’Connor, who is leaving
us to join the management team at The Philadelphia Cricket Club. Tom has been a great
part of our service team for the past two years, and we wish him well on this planned career
move. We know the PCC members and staff will love him there! As for us, we should have
a new F&B manager on staff before Tom leaves the UClub, as we have already interviewed
some very capable candidates.
This summer, we’ll also do some major housekeeping around the Club. The kitchen will be
getting some new ovens, banquets will get some new chairs, the pool will get a good scrub-
bing and tune-up, and the ladies locker room will be closely examined so we can clearly
University Club
of Boston
identify what is needed in this important space. From mid to late July you’ll also see a lot
of light fixtures being changed out. We have partnered with NStar to reduce our carbon
426 Stuart Street
Boston, MA 02116
footprint a bit, and bring in more energy efficient lighting. We’ll see a return on this invest-
President's Message
by Errin Siagel
Dear Members,
With summer now in full swing, I hope you have many
exciting activities planned with family and friends to
enjoy the season. As you know, the Club’s hours of op-
eration also change during the summer months and I
encourage you to check our web site for updated sched-
ules and activities.
During the month of June we welcomed our new Board
of Directors and said goodbye to outgoing members
Bry Roskoz, David Jaye, Gerry Kirschner, Liz Bride, Bill
Winterer, Ken Lyons, and Shifteh Fahr. Please join me
in thanking them personally for all they have done for
the Club. All of them put in many hours of hard work
and have helped to make the Club a great success. A
special thanks to Bry for serving as Treasurer and for
keeping us in good fiscal order, to Liz Bride for manag-
ing our club survey process, past President Matt Shed
and to outgoing past President Bill Winterer for all their
leadership during our most recent renovation and to
Ken Lyons for doing a spectacular job with the Scholar-
ship Committee.
Along with changes at the Board level, we also wel-
come several new committee chairs and thank others
for their continued leadership
and contribution. As you know,
Committees play an integral role
in overseeing the Club, formulat-
ing new activities and programs,
recruiting and retaining mem-
bers and evaluating policies and
procedures. Please reach out to
the Chairs with any ideas or feed-
back you might have and consider
volunteering for a committee if interested. The current
Chairs are listed at below
On a serious note, I would like to remind members and
their guests of the requirement to register at the front
desk when entering the Club. We ask Members to do
this for several reasons: first and foremost to ensure that
only authorized people are entering the Club; second, to
be able to locate a member at the facility if needed; and
third, to comply with our guest policy.
On several occasions in the recent past, there have been
unauthorized persons who have entered the Club and
committed thefts of personal property. Once again, in
June an individual entered the Club and stole an em-
ployee’s wallet. In order to ensure the personal safety
of our members and employees, the Board has asked
Club Management to adopt a more robust sign in proc-
ess at the front door. This means that all members will
be asked to sign in when entering the Club and politely
reminded if they forget.
While we are hopeful that a renewed attention to the
sign in process will help, the Board and Management
are also discussing other alternatives like more tradi-
tional security systems. In the mean-time, we ask for
your cooperation with the protocol of signing in and
will keep you informed of other changes to policies and
procedures around this issue.
food for the health-stressed neighborhoods in Boston and
are courting restaurants to carry their tomatoes to help
them achieve financial self-sufficiency. The Food Project
youth are leading the efforts to market greenhouse toma-
goal is to find buyers for 20,000 lbs of tomatoes picked off
"Ouch, that hurt...!"
2011 Massachusetts State Doubles Championships
By: Tom Poor
They fell like flies. It seems like there were more injuries
of one kind or another this year than matches played
(and that doesn’t count injured psyches!). None were
more devastating than the torn calf tendon suffered by
Robin Silver Grace on the eighth point of the Mixed fi-
nal against Mar-
got Kearney & Pat
Malloy, finalists
the previous two
years. Robin and
partner Doug Lif-
ford had upset de-
fendingchampi- ons Hope Crosier
& Chris Spahr in the semis and had a shot at their first ti-
tle before the curtain fell. Ironically, they had advanced
to the semis when Dan Roberts & Fernanda Rocha had
to default when Dan tore his hamstring, sending him
to two months of rehabilitation. Margot & Pat, in their
semi, defeated the Harvard Club duo of Sharon Bradey
& Mat Sibble who in turn had advanced over Lori
Stump & Matt Silver, beneficiaries of Hope Prockop’s
default with Preston Quick when a knee injury sent her
to the sidelines. In her resignation, Hope wrote, “This is
the hardest squash e-mail I’ve ever had to write.” There
will be no more chances with Preston as he moves to
New York this summer.Hard times were in the Womens
draw as well. With Robin on her way to the hospital, she
& Sharon Bradey had to default the final to Hope Cro-
sier & Fernanda Rocha. That spared the latter team the
prospect of being finalists for the third year in a row, los-
ing in 2009 & 2010 to Sharon & Jeannie Blasberg. Jean-
nie is currently living in Switzerland for two years as
husband John has a business assignment. In the semis,
Hope & Fernanda defeated Breck Haynes & Kaitlin Sen-
natt in four while in the other half, Robin & Sharon won
over Wendy Berry & Sue Greene. The latter team had
advanced at the expense again of Hope Prockop’s torn
knee meniscus, short circuiting the appearance of her
partner, Harvard’s Cece Cortes.
Cece’s dad, Joe Cortes, has been a staple of the State B’s,
winning three
of the last four
years. As so of-
ten happens,
however, fame
in the States can
be fleeting and
such was Joe’s
fate this year
as he and partner John Lingos-Webb were dumped in
the first round by Jim Milton & Tom McCarthy. In this
draw of 34, none of the top four seeds made it beyond
the quarters, indicative of either a lot of equally talented
teams or just plain Poor seeding. Remember that title of
the 2008 States article ”A Star is Born!”? That was Car-
son Spahr, then 11, now 14 and the winner of the B’s
with Chris Vernick in a five game beauty over Univer-
sity Club professional Fernanda Rocha & top 5.5 singles
player Max Montgelas. Carson & Chris had edged John
Brazilian & Chris Lutes in the semis after dismissing #3
seed Michael Wang & Scott Beebe in the quarters. Bra-
zilian & Lutes had advanced in five over #2 seed Jon
Hartnett & Glenn Prichett. In the upper half, the Milton-
July/August 2011 The University Club • Boston 7

McCarthy team ran to the quarters where they were
blanked by John Frantzis & Jeff Rodman who in turn
were shut out by Fernanda & Max. On the injury front,
Fran Donlan & Dick Whitney never got started as Fran
ruptured his Achilles tendon, sidelining him for the bet-
ter part of a year.
Carson was not done. Pausing only for a drink of water,
he led his father Chris back on court for the Parent-Child
final against Tom &
Morgan Poor. Both
teams were nation-
al champions a cou-
ple of weeks earlier
in the Under 17 and
Century divisions
respectively, but
the States was no
contest as the Spahrs won in three easy games. The Poors
were fortunate in the semis to escape the clutches of an-
other 14-year old phenom, Timmy Brownell, and his dad
Bob in five games. In their opening round, Tom & Morgan
were in a tight one with Paul & Mark Rapisarda when in
the first game Mark collapsed at 11-all with a ruptured
Achilles tendon. He had surgery a day later and will see
the sun again in June. The Brownells also advanced when
Liam Quinn’s father, Tom, could not answer the bell due
to a pulled hamstring.
The day, however, was not a total bummer for Tom.
Earlier, he partnered
with newly eligible
Malcolm Davidson
in the 60’s and met
the reigning five year
champions, Lenny
Bernheimer & John
Brazilian, in the fi-
nals. The great irony
in this match was that Tom & Lenny have been partners
in national age group tournaments for almost 20 years;
John & Malcolm began a partnership this season in the
60’s nationally. What was not great, though, was Lenny’s
calf muscle, originally pulled in the US Nationals in Chi-
cago in late March and not responding well to treatment
and rest in the interim. The three game triumph for Poor
& Davidson was predictable. The winners had defeated
Jon Sheldon & Chuck Kelly in the semis, the latter hav-
ing the distinction of beating Malcolm Salter twice – once
in the opening round with Marty Stocklan, then again in
the next round, substituting for Fran Donlan with Dick
Whitney. Malcolm had been free to play when his origi-
nal partner, Hank Shaw, was forced to default with a
shoulder injury.
The C draw with 41 teams was the largest of the States’
eight draws which included 158 teams, the largest number
since the State Dou-
bles began in 1950.
Here the seeds were
relatively good al-
though young Car-
son nearly upset
the apple cart with
partner Amory Ben-
nett, losing a four
game quarter-final tussle to 2nd seeded Bill Keravuori &
Dave Shulman. That victory seemed to provide the lat-
ter with the necessary momentum as they shut out John
Keating & Cale Forgues in the semis and top seed Dean
Williams & Matt Gibbs in the finals. Dean & Matt, cham-
pions in 2009, slipped by 4th seeded Katie Hendricks &
Jim Milton in their semi, ending the latter’s run of pre-
vious round wins dotted with many overtime games.
Other women in the draw made their mark as well, no-
tably Bry Roskoz & Krissy Rubin who upset 3rd seeded
Mark Baranski & Zach Harvey by unmercifully attacking
8 The University Club • Boston July/August 2011

Mark, hobbling with a leg injury. All’s fair in love and
the States.
When Tom Butters
and Bruce Welty
never took the
floor in the opening
round of the 50’s
due to injuries, it
appeared the draw
was headed for
more of the same.
Such was not the
case, however, as last year’s finalists Malcolm David-
son & Court Chilton set their sights on winning this one.
They ran into immediate trouble against Rob Dewees &
enigmatic Will Bigelow, suffering as Will scurried to all
corners of the court before finally weakening in the fifth.
Things improved only slightly in the semis against John
Nimick & Len Zide as four tight games ended in their
favor. The string ran out in the finals where last year’s
conquerors, Sandy Tierney & Jamie Fagan, awaited. They
were rested after demolishing John Frantzis & Chris
Lutes in the quarters, then destroying Joe Duffey & Jeff
Rodman in the semis. Sandy & Jamie administered a sim-
ilar coup de grace in the finals.
What the States giveth, it also taketh and so was the out-
come of the evening’s final match, the State A’s, match-
ing Tierney & Pat
Malloy, champi-
ons in ’07 & ’08,
against Chris
Spahr & Doug
Lifford, each win-
ners in previous
years with other
partners. If Sandy
was the dominant player in the 50’s, he was in trouble in
the A’s as he freely admitted after losing the first game
when, perspiring heavily, he uttered, “This is not good.”
The next two games went the same way, making Chris
and Carson the only two time winners of the day. Spahr
& Lifford, seeded second, had little difficulty quarters
and a three game cruise over Andrew Matuch & Bruce
Sullivan in the semis.
So, the winners can crow for the summer while the
losers lick their wounds and the injured heal theirs.
More excitement is in store as the Union Boat Club
continues planning for a new doubles court, sure to
bring in a new influx of players and making Boston
a suitable venue for a major tournament with four
courts in the city. This development, the large number
of players in the States (this year, a record 180 en-
trants), and the emergence of younger players bode
well for the future of the doubles game in Boston.
UClub Tri Team
Invades Cohasset
The UClub Tri team hit the beach &
streets of Cohasset on June 26th! The
Cohasset Tri is New England’s most
popular Triathlon event, selling out
within 2 hours and attracting 1000
competitors! Cohasset draws the
best athletes for it’s scenic beauty and
challenging course. Our team hit the
chilly (62 degree) water for a fast 400
yard swim, onto the bike for a 12 mile
ride through town of Cohasset with
some slight hills, and twisting turns,
the 3.2 mile run challenges all as you
run along Jerusalem Road, and finish
with a very long flat sprint.
Betsy Feldmann, found her way to the
podium to receive a medal for a sec-
ond place finish in the women’s age
group division with a time of 1:23:48.
The Rubin family (Gary & Chrissy)
put in the good effort and Chrissy
had a personal best time(1:39:34).
Todd Estabrook (1:22:28), Dave
Dali(1:14:11), graciously invited eve-
rybody that participated in the tri to
an after tri party at his home... except
the UCLUBBERS! Just kidding! Sheila
Mulderig (1:42:45) could also be found
on the course struggling with the tem-
peratures as the day began to heat up.
Native Cohasset resident and UCLUB
member Tim Stanton was with his
family cheering on all the competitors.
Even Carol Pierce was quietly com-
peting placing 3rd in her age group
with a time of 1:12:41. Ex-UCLUBBER
Brad Thomas was in awe of our team
and it’s new gear. Not to be
overlooked was Coach Dave Dornaus.
CD was scurrying around the transi-
tion area with his highly visible black
& yellow Saucony’s & very official
vest. CD was like a proud parent as he
watched his team in their cool new tri
gear, dolphin into the water, jump on
their bikes, and run like hell out of the
transition area.
Want to have some fun this sum-
mer, join our tri team. Push yourself
out of your comfort zone; participate
in America’s fastest growing sport.
Triathlon Anyone?
Many UCLUB members train all year for triathlon. The
UCLUB ranks include Dede Griesbauer, a professional
triathlete; Dave Dornaus, (UCLUB aquatics “pro”) and
elite tri-athlete; Jason Hancock, a seasoned “Iron Man”
tri-athlete; Gary & Krissy Rubin and Bry Roskoz, all
Half-Iron-Man tri-athletes. There are many more tri-
athletes among us, incognito, I am sure!
More UCLUb-bers joined the sport of triathlon this
year. Several finished the Hyannis Sprint Triathlon in
early June. Their individual results were impressive!
Not surprisingly, Linda Beane crossed the finish line
first for Team UCLUB in 1:13:35 for a second place in
her age group. Glynis was right behind Linda crossing
in 1:17:27 and Wilkie Cooke literally finished next in
1:17:35. I wonder if they ran the race side-by-side. From
the results, it looks as though Wilke & Glynis may have
~ Judy Kanwal had an impressive first sprint tri, too,
finishing the race in 1:33:44! Well done Judy! Sheiliagh
“SAM” Muldrig - our all-around athlete and the only
rower among us - finished her first tri, too, in 1:43:38 for
a 12th place ranking in her age-group. Our lady veteran
tri-athletes, Bry, Betsy Feldmann and Krissy finished in
1:21:01, 1:22:46 and 1:35:17, respectively.
The UCLUB men were not far behind. Kirk Wood
completed the tri in an hour fourteen minutes. Dave
Dali finished next among the UCLUB men in 1:15:52--
well done, Dave! David Jaye finished in an impressive
1:30:26-- good for a 16th place ranking among his aging
July/August 2011 The University Club • Boston 13
peers.
Gary Rubin impressively finished the swim in 13 and a
half minutes, and the ride in 37 and a half minutes, but
did not run, so as not to re-injure his leg.
I heard seas were high and the Atlantic was unseason-
ably cold in early June due to the rain. So the swim at
Hyannis was tough to say the least!
Thankfully, everyone had his or her new UCLUB tria-
thlon gear. The blue & white triathlon uniforms are very
sharp!
This weekend, Sunday, June 26, 2011, more UCLUB
members will compete in the Cohasset Sprint Triathlon,
too.

bers at the club are paired with an
existing member as their club Am-
least once a month for the first two
months of his or her membership
to answer any questions they may
have regarding how the club works,
etc., and to help make introductions
so they will feel welcome here at the
club.
Reciprocal Club News!
The Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. is excited to announce that hotel rates have been discounted 20%
for all bookings in July and August 2011. The Club has just finished adding three new hotel rooms that offer the
latest amenities.
Non-member rates are $156+tax per night for the 29 standard hotel rooms, while the new deluxe Adams and Jef-
ferson rooms are $196+tax per night. The new premier Washington Room is $224+tax per night. All rates include
breakfast Monday through Friday, and continental breakfast on Saturdays.
Summer is a terrific time to stay at the club! There are all types of great festivals in the city, fun events on the
gram to-date, helping the new
members to integrate into the club
smoothly, and expanding their circle
of friends. We have been fortunate
enough to have a healthy prospec-
tive member list, and in turn, lots of
new members. This is a great prob-
lem to have; however, I do not want
to burden our existing Ambassadors
to take on more new members than
necessary. Our initial guideline was
to have an Ambassador paired with
a new member not more than three
times during the year. This is July
1st, and some have already been as-
signed three.
My message this month is more of
an appeal…your membership de-
partment needs you! I do realize
that we are all busy these days, and
I don’t want to increase your work-
load, but this could be considered a
recreational outlet! Your connection
with our new member could be in
the form of drinks or dinner at the
club, a phone call or an email just to
touch base. Just making some kind
of connection is important, and will
make the new member feel special.
In closing, I would like to thank all
those Ambassadors who have been
so generous with their time. I very
much appreciate it, as do your new
members. This is a fabulous club
community where a lot of camara-
derie is shown, and we’d like to be
able to share that with all new mem-
UClub Member Curt Kohlberg Finishes 2nd on
World Poker Tour, Wins $ 586,010
Emily Spencer (ES) Interviews Curt Kohlberg (CK)
ES: Tell us about the tournament!
CK: It took place at the Hard Rock
Casino in Hollywood, Florida, in ear-
ly May, and was the first
tournament I entered since my poker
presentation at the UClub in March,
so I owe a great deal of
thanks to the good karma that my
fellow UClubbers sent my way! The
event drew a larger-than-
expected 430 players, each of whom
paid a $10,000 entry fee, and lasted, if
you can believe it, six days.
For the first five days, we played
from noon until 9:00pm with only
four 15-minute breaks each day. On
day six, we started play at 4:00pm
(due to TV production issues) and
didn’t finish until 4:45am! The final
table lasted 220 hands and was the
second longest final table on record.
Pretty sick, huh?
ES: That’s a long time for a 53 year
old!
CK: 53? Me? I actually only look
53. I’m really 25. Want to get some
drinks after this interview?
ES: Uh, yeah. I would really like to,
yet I’m booked through 2050. Nice
try, though. Back to business:
what was it like to play for 6 days?
That sounds insane.
Ck: It definitely was. I was complete-
ly exhausted, both physically and
mentally. However, the adrenaline
started kicking in around day 3 and
kept pumping well past the end of
the event. In fact, it kept up for a
full week afterwards and unfortu-
nately I couldn’t shut it off. I was un-
able to sleep and was physically in
pretty bad shape. I even lost to Dan
Roberts in squash, and, if you can be-
lieve it, Chris Spahr, which were
really, really low points in my life. At
even 10% of my normal skill level, I
should crush these bugs 3-0. It’s
now been almost three weeks and
I’m still not 100%, so while I wouldn’t
trade the rush of a WPT final
table for anything, it’s not without a
little downside.
ES: Was this your best result on the
World Poker Tour thus far?
CK: Yes. However, my record prior
to the last 18 months was so bad that
it likely only increases my
hourly win rate to a little over mini-
mum wage. For the first several years
that I pursued this hobby, I
candidly had one of the worst
records. I had no patience, the wrong
coach and didn’t approach the
game properly. As a result, I made
only one final table out of more than
50 events. That’s a lot of losing,
even for a loser. The good news is
that two years ago I found a great
coach, adjusted my game plan and
have been very fortunate since then,
with 3 televised final table appear-
July/August 2011 The University Club • Boston 17
ances.
ES: How did your family react to
your good fortune?
Ck: Same as always: the kids ignored
me and my wife took the check out of
my hands, smiled, and
without missing a beat, told me to
take out the trash. Some things never
change…

Kentucky Derby Party Success!
On the first Saturday in May Uclub members sipped mint juleps, studied their programs and placed their
bets on the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby. The annual party gave members the chance to put on their
Churchhill Downs hats and blazers while they watched the Derby in the Tap Room. This year's addition of an
in-house bookmaker also gave members the chance to bet on their pick for the winner and they could see how
other club members were betting on the bar-side tote board.
The Uclub favorite, Pants on Fire, ran a close race until the stretch, but the club's long shot, Animal Kingdom,
hit the wire first. Mary McKee and Dylan Hunt (Herb Hunt’s son) picked the winner and collected the $500
handle. Pants on Fire's 9th place finish may have been a disappointment, but the excitement of the race and the
chance to enjoy the spectacle with friends made up for the losses.
The Derby wasn't the only contest that day. Club staffers consulted with fashion experts and master milliners
to pick the best lady's hat. It was a close call, but Grace Moore was the consensus winner and she took home
the coveted iPod Shuffle.
