About the Scottish Qualifications Authority The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is an executive non-departmental public body (NDPB) sponsored by the Scottish Government's Education Department. We are the national body in Scotland responsible for the development, accreditation, assessment and certification of qualifications other than degrees. SQA is also a UK wide awarding body offering a range of qualifications to centres outside Scotland. The overall aim of the SQA is to manage the qualifications system below degree level to allow students to fulfill their potential to participate in the economy, society and communities of Scotland. SQA employs approximately 562 staff located at sites in Scotland and China. There are approximately 1,470 centres approved to offer SQA’s wide range of qualifications. Education and training are becoming more global. With increasing mobility of labour, demand is growing for education and qualifications that cross national borders. New developments in online learning and assessment mean that there are new opportunities as well as challenges for SQA and similar organisations. SQA International consultancy and SQA International Awarding are two business areas within SQA that works to support and develop education and training internationally. SQA is a leader in identifying and addressing the challenges presented by the increasing globalisation of education and training. We are committed to playing our part in contributing to the development of learning, training and assessment across the world. A growing number of overseas organisations now offer SQA qualifications. Other countries use its standards as a benchmark for developing their own systems and qualifications. SQA’s systems have become development models in Europe, Australasia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East. SQA has a strong track record of sharing its expertise with governments, donor agencies and partners to support the development of education and training internationally. SQA has an extensive track record for its international work. Supporting the work of the RCS The RCS’s wide range of charitable outreach work involves every Commonwealth country and is available to all Commonwealth citizens. These activities celebrate the diversity of the Commonwealth. They: • bring children and young people into contact with the modern Commonwealth, and give them a real understanding of its aims and values; • give a voice to young people in the Commonwealth and the confidence to use that voice; • inspire and facilitate an ever-widening web of links between people and organisations in the 53 Commonwealth countries; • encourage and recognise the creativity and professionalism of aspiring Commonwealth artists, designers and film-makers; • help to develop strong functioning civil societies, particularly in areas of conflict. The RCS seeks to develop long-term partnerships with sponsors and donors who have a mutual interest in achieving these goals.
