Choosing Quality Child Care
If you are a parent who is seeking child care for a young child,
choosing quality care is one of the most important decisions you
will ever make for your child.
Some questions to consider:
Is the program licensed by the Division of Child Development or
Nationally Accredited?
Do they have a Star Rating? 1 star facilities meet minimum
licensing requirements. A 2 - 5 star rating means the facility
meets higher program standards and higher staff education levels.
Ask about the training, education and experience of staff.
What is the program’s philosophy?
Do they provide a safe and clean environment that ensures the
health and safety of the children?
Is the staff interaction nurturing, warm and caring?
What is the staff to child ratio? Is it low enough so that there are
enough staff to supervise all of the activities of the children?
Do they provide an age appropriate, fun learning environment
that promotes the social, emotional, physical and intellectual
development of children?
Is there an “open door” policy that encourages parent and family
involvement?
Are there nutritious meals and snacks provided for the children?
Parents can use the NC Division of Child
Development’s website to find information
about licensed facilities at: www.ncchildcare.net
tomorrow, yet we forget that he is
someone today.”
